[nysbirds-l] YT Warbler, W Kingbird clarification

2010-09-10 Thread Patricia Lindsay
To add to Dave Klauber's post (thanks, Dave), it was Sharon and Marc Brody
who had just spotted the Yellow-throated Warbler as I was arriving on the
scene this evening. I kept track of it for about 40 minutes until Shai Mitra
arrived; he got to see it as well. The bird was well east of the picnic
tables (which are in the closed lot to the west as you come over the
bridge), but still favoring that north edge of the lot(s), moving with a few
other warblers slowly eastward; it foraged among the trees and low veg just
inside the split rail fence (in fact, often along the fence itself) that is
just north of the flagpole in the traffic circle straight in off the bridge.
We left it in the cedars hugging the west side of the main building that is
in the open Lot # 1 (around 6PM).

The Western Kingbird was in the northwest corner of the closed parking lot,
west of the picnic tables.

[nysbirds-l] Raven in Plainview, Nassau Co.

2010-09-25 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Marc and Sharon Brody observed a Raven in their yard in Plainview, Nassau
Co., Long Island yesterday afternoon. Marc sent photos; the bird had some
large unidentifiable food item in its bill and was being harassed by crows.
This location is approximately 8-10 miles east of where Ravens have been
previously reported in Nassau County.

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gulls Robert Moses SP Suffolk Co.

2010-09-30 Thread Patricia Lindsay
As you may have surmised from Shai's peculiar syntax in his earlier post, I
had NOT yet finished my survey of the parking lots at Robert Moses-and that
reports of multiple Lesser Black-backed Gulls get him a bit excited.

After completing my tour of Fields 2 and 5, not having seen any other birds
of note, I returned to the original flock and found two additional juveniles
and a one year old LBBG along with the original juv and the adult.

Some of my photos are posted on Shai's picasa site, starting here:

[nysbirds-l] Is the Captree Ground-Dove still there?

2010-12-03 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The last report I have is from November 28th. With the Captree Christmas
Count looming near now (and for those that still haven't seen it) it would
be great if we could confirm its continuing presence and, if so, get a feel
for its new location(s). I would encourage everyone to take a look if you're
birding the beach, and contact me or the list with any reports, positive or
negative.

[nysbirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow Jones Beach Suffolk Co. 20 Mar

2011-03-21 Thread patricia lindsay

During an otherwise slow day of birding around the barrier beaches
yesterday, Joan Quinlan called to report a Grasshopper Sparrow that she
and Gerta Fritz had observed from the southeast corner of the boardwalk
at the Nature Center at Jones Beach West End around noon. Shai and I and
others looked for it extensively for the next hour but had no luck,
though it might well still be present in the extensive dune system
there. We would be interested in any further reports.

Among other birds seen at Jones Beach were two Red Knots resting with
Black-bellied Plovers in the dunes south of the Nature Center and small
numbers of Tree Swallows in the air. Later in the afternoon, at the
Bayard Cutting Arboretum in East Islip, we found three Golden-crowned
Kinglets in the pines, and Dark-eyed Juncos were singing from the shrubs
near the mansion.

[nysbirds-l] Robert Moses SP seawatch Suffolk Co.

2012-05-15 Thread Patricia Lindsay
To follow up on Shai Mitra's post, a rather slow but steady seawatch from
Robert Moses Field 2 this morning from 7:30 to 9:50 produced the following
birds:

16 Black Scoter - all one flock

51 Common Loon

7 Sooty Shearwater

51 Northern Gannet

7 Laughing Gull

17 Herring Gull

1 Great Black-backed Gull

33 Least Tern

1 Black Tern (alternate plumage)

10 Roseate Tern

~180 Common Tern

1 Forster's Tern (ad)

Joan Quinlan joined me about 8:40 and got to see the last two shearwaters.
Almost everything was migrating/feeding west to east; for the last half hour
or so there were some (returning?) east-to-west No. Gannets and Common
Terns. No jaegers or shorebirds of any kind were seen. A few Barn Swallows
were passing, mostly east to west, and an Osprey was attracted to the
feeding flocks of Common Terns near shore at two points.

The wind was moderate out of the southeast, eventually turning more east,
with only a few slight showers and very good visibility.

2017-05-01 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Joan Quinlan just called to report a male Summer Tanager at Gilgo. The
bird is in the community to the east of the marina, 3-4 houses from the

Good luck if you try for it.

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue CP, Long Island

2017-05-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Among a nice gathering of shorebirds and terns on the flats was an
exceptionally early adult Arctic Tern and a somewhat early White-rumped
Sandpiper. On the ocean side our forlorn effort to connect with Pete and
Taylor's Yellow-nosed Albatross yielded a single Sooty Shearwater heading east,
along with fair numbers of gannets, terns and scoters.

[nysbirds-l] Bob Kurtz, now passed

2017-09-27 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Our dear friend Bobby Kurtz passed away today, after several months of
illness.

Bobby was an unforgettable birder, whose enthusiasm added excitement to
our collective adventure of birds. Being with him was a natural part of
decades of discovery for us. We learned a lot together, and enjoyed it
all immensely.

Details of arrangements will follow soon.

Northwest winds are forecast tomorrow at the Fire Island hawkwatch,
where Bobby sought them so often.

And please allow me to clarify that I have no idea why it is circulating

single 2 second look at a tiny image on someone's phone on Sunday. My
reaction was simply a "wow" and I never pursued it further.

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwits at Heckscher SP Suffolk Co.

2017-11-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This morning there were were two juvenile Hudsonian Godwits present in
the Field 7 lot, neither of which had any afflictions, meaning there is
at least one other juvenile to add to the total number of godwits
frequenting the lot. (The tumor-afflicted juvenile was not seen while I
was there.) A Pectoral Sandpiper was also present.

The adult Hudwit with the injured leg eventually flew in from the east
with a flock of 28 Black-bellies and some Dunlin, and sat down on a
grassy strip on the west side of the lot. The puddles in the grass on
the east side are no more, and the puddle in the lot itself is fast
disappearing.

[nysbirds-l] Seasonally unusual species Robert Moses SP, Suffolk Co.

2017-11-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Following yesterday's report of our very late Blue Grosbeak at Jones
Beach, and reports of Indigo Buntings and other seasonally unusual
migrants at Sandy Hook, NJ, this morning, Shai Mitra is at Robert Moses
checking to see what's there. He reports very few birds, but among those
he's found so far are two White-eyed Vireos, two Northern Parulas, an
Indigo Bunting and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

[nysbirds-l] Holly Wilson, 1986-2017

2017-11-09 Thread Patricia Lindsay
A great many of our friends in the New York birding community knew Holly
Wilson, our beloved niece, frequent birding companion, and vibrant young
woman. We lost our Holly on Tuesday, to suicide.

We so appreciate the kind thoughts and feelings many of you have shared
with us, helping us through our fog of grief. It means more than you
could ever know.

Some have asked for details about the wake. We will be celebrating
Holly's life this coming Sunday, 12 November, at 2:00-6:00 pm, at the
Overton Funeral Home (172 Main Street Islip, NY 11751; 631-581-5085).
According to her wishes, she will be cremated, and her ashes will be
spread at a favorite birding location in East Hampton at a later date.

FW: [nysbirds-l] Holly Wilson, 1986-2017

2017-11-09 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Sorry for the reposting, I just found this out. Holly's husband and
family ask that in lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to one of the
organizations below.

Donors Choose -  https://www.donorschoose.org/  This is a crowd funding
site for educators, and connects teacher in high-needs communities with
donors.

Holly was an ESL teacher in the School of Discovery and Exploration in
Sunset Park, Brooklyn, PS503. She taught mainly kindergarten and first
graders who spoke Chinese, Spanish, Urdu, and many other languages, and
was often their first contact in the English-speaking community. Helping
out in the classrooms with the literacy side of their education, she
brought them from having no English at all to being able to speak and
read it. She loved her 'babies' and stood up for them at every
opportunity.

New York State Ornithological Association -
http://www.nybirds.org/FedDonations.htm  We all know how important this
organization is to the birding community and to conservation and
education in general.

Thank you all again for your comforting words and thoughts.

A great many of our friends in the New York birding community knew
Holly Wilson, our beloved niece, frequent birding companion, and vibrant
young woman.

Not seen again but there is so much habitat here. I looked briefly at Field 4
on the other side of the big marsh with no luck. By the way, the original
location was outside and east of Field 8, not 7, where the small cedars are.

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Scoters Lake Ronkonkoma Suffolk Co.

2018-02-21 Thread Patricia Lindsay
There is a pair of White-winged Scoters resting and preening on Lake
Ronkonkoma. The Red-necked Grebe continues, and there is a Pied-billed
Grebe as well. These in addition to the large number of Hooded
Mergansers and even larger number of Common Mergansers that continue
here.

Shai Mitra arrived after I left and just called to report that
there are also three Greater Scaup, and the two Red-throated Loons

Before leaving the beach I returned to Robert Moses Field 2 and

[nysbirds-l] White-faced Ibis and Brown Pelicans Fire Island Inlet, Suffolk

2018-07-14 Thread Patricia Lindsay
An adult White-faced Ibis was among many waders and shorebirds at the Captree
Marsh, and three Brown Pelicans flew west to east along the ocean beach at
nearby Robert Moses SP. The first pelican, a juv, passed at 7:35 and appeared
to cross the barrier near the bridge, as though heading toward Captree. Ten
minutes later an adult an older imm passed to east as far as we could see.
Otherwise just 5 Cory's Shearwaters so far.

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Robert Moses SP and Heckscher SP, Suffolk Co.

2018-09-10 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Shai Mitra just called to report 69 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Robert
Moses--17 at Field 2 and 52 at Field 5. They are of all ages, including
1 juvenile, and many SY, older immatures and adults.

I had 4 at Heckscher SP Field 6 earlier.

The puddles at Field 7 are filling slowly but the grassy areas were
still not flooded as of this morning. An Osprey was up to its belly
bathing in the center puddle. There were even 14 Mallards; there haven't
been any ducks in weeks.  While I was there 3 Greater Yellowlegs came
and went, and 5 Semipalmated Plovers, a Least Sandpiper and the usual
number of Killdeer (8 today) were staying put. But it is of course a
very dynamic situation, especially with the storms around, so I expect
there will be a lot of turnover in the next few days.

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull update Heckscjer SP Suffolk - NO

2018-09-10 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This evening on my way home from work I checked the boat basin, Field 6
and Field 7 and, interestingly,  had NO Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Of interest in Field 7 though, where the puddles continue to fill, I had
my first juvenile Black-belled Plover and juvenile Ring-billed Gull of
the season. Photos of the Ring-billed Gull are on my eBird checklist:

[nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP, Suffolk County

2018-09-27 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Yesterday I was alerted to six juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers and two
Dunlin among the birds visiting the Heckscher puddles. When I arrived,
several people with cameras were out of their cars attempting to get
photos or get closer looks. These folks were approaching cautiously and
slowly, and while the birds did not immediately flush, they were
obviously hyper-alert, interfering with their ability to feed, rest and
preen in peace.

I was curious about the age of the Dunlins, as they were in a
transitional plumage I suspected to be molting juvs. So I returned to
the site this morning, where I was very upset to see, not for the first
time, photographers in two cars and a truck positioned RIGHT IN THE
PUDDLE, practically on top of and surrounding the birds. I decided this
would not be a pleasant study and left.

I can no longer remain silent on this issue. Folks, where is your common
sense, courtesy, and decency? Give these birds a chance! Is your photo
more important than the well-being of these migrating birds? Give other
birds who may be avoiding this disruption a chance to land and feed or
rest as well.  And give other birders a chance to see them! Another
birder, scoping the birds from great distance, through gaps among the
closely gathered vehicles, was completely blocked when  the truck,
already on top of the birds, was re-positioned to be EVEN CLOSER to the
birds.

PLEASE - Stay in your cars! Or scope from a distance.
PLEASE - Stay out of the main puddles. Especially do not drive up
near/onto the grassy berm in the center of the main puddle.
Please keep your distance --these long-distance migrants are dropping in
to rest and preen and feed, impossible with such pressure on them so
constantly.
And please have respect for others trying to see the birds.

The Dunlin, by the way, are indeed molting juveniles, as confirmed this
morning by Shai.

The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher remained in the fields south of Montauk
Highway for several hours, where it was admired by several shifts of
birders. It was generally quite cooperative, feeding actively and
perching on the fencelines, but occasionally it would retreat into the
trees along the east side of the hollow for five or ten minutes, where
it was generally not possible to see (eagle-eyed Pat was able to discern
it in this context a couple of times, on different perches). It was
still behaving this way when Pat and I returned from the point at 3:30.
About fifteen minutes later, however, it moved north to the trees at the
northeast corner of the field, paused briefly, then flew high and north
across the road. Those of us who were present were able to re-find it
across the road, perching on a snag in the south pasture of the Dude
Ranch, but it remained there only briefly. Before 4:00, it flew high and
out of sight over the hill to the north, perhaps landing in one of the
more northerly pastures of the Dude Ranch. We scanned what we could see
from the County Park overlooking Deep Hollow, but the northern portion
of that property is being used for pasturing horses, so we couldn't walk
north far enough to look into the more remote pastures.

There was a lot of bird activity in Montauk, from passerine migrants to
seabirds. Several hundred Cory's Shearwaters were feeding off the point
and in the Sound north and west to at least the Lake Montauk Inlet, and
we saw four Parasitic Jaegers.

[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Heckscher SP, Suffolk Co.

2018-10-31 Thread Patricia Lindsay
An earlier attempt to post this seems not to have gotten through;
apologies for the repeat if it finally does.

Joan Quinlan found an Ash-throated Flycatcher here earlier today. Shai
Mitra was able to refind the bird around 4PM in the scrub between Field
6 and the defunct pool building. At a little after 5PM the bird flew
north into the inner marsh, but not far. Taylor Sturm was able to refind
it there, and saw it fly back to the area directly north of the pool
building, where Joan had found it originally.

[nysbirds-l] 5th Annual Seatuck LI Birding Challenge Results

2018-09-21 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The 5th Annual Seatuck LI Birding Challenge was conducted on 15
September this year, and although the light southeast winds were not the
most favorable for migration, the weather was pleasant and cool, and a
great variety of species was found.

Ten teams competed this year, and it was exciting to welcome three new
teams (Jack Gro Dim, Brooklyn Dippers and Bird Brainz). Total
participants numbered 39, and it was this robust coverage that afforded
the high number and variety of species.

The teams found a total of 180 species, amazingly just four shy of
last year's total when we had a windfall overnight migration preceding
the count morning. The cumulative total for the five years now stands at
231, with a dozen species added this year: Great Shearwater, Tricolored
Heron, Sora, Whimbrel, Western Sandpiper, Whip-poor-will, Black-billed
Cuckoo, Red-headed Woodpecker, Purple Martin, Cliff Swallow, Worm-eating
Warbler, and Blue Grosbeak.

Changing things up a bit this year, some of the long-time teams
re-amalgamated alliances, morphing into new iterations of old teams. And
in a departure from traditional strategies of past years, Pteam
Ptarmigeddon confined their efforts to Suffolk County only, and the
VizMig Whizzes made the decision to do a Big Sit, barely moving 50 feet
from the Fire Island Hawkwatch platform! Others traveled far and wide,
from Brooklyn to the East End.

All Wings Considered (with one replacement member this year) defended
their 2017 title as champions, coming in with an official total of 121
species (with one species inadvertently left off the list, they actually
saw 122).

In second place were the Four Harbors Herons, with 112, and in third
place, Pteam Ptarmigeddon with an impressive 106 species in Suffolk
County exclusively.

Pteam Ptarmigeddon led with the most saves, eight in all: Whimbrel,
Long-billed Dowitcher, Least Tern, Whip-poor-will, Philadelphia Vireo,
Cliff Swallow, Worm-eating Warbler, and Connecticut Warbler.

  Other saves were
Bird Brainz: Hooded Merganser, Wild Turkey, Clapper Rail, Solitary
Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Eastern Phoebe, and Lincoln's Sparrow

Bearded Vultures: American Bittern, Hudsonian Godwit, Western
Sandpiper, Magnolia Warbler, and Indigo Bunting

VizMig Whizzes: Tricolored Heron, Black Tern, Purple Martin, Prairie
Warbler, and Rusty Blackbird

Brooklyn Dippers: Pied-billed Grebe, Black-billed Cuckoo, Horned Lark,
and Baltimore Oriole

Four Harbors Herons: Pectoral Sandpiper, Bay-breasted Warbler,
Blackpoll Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler

All Wings Considered: Willow Flycatcher and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

  Stealthy Ibis: Ovenbird

It was another great Challenge, topped off as always by a lively
compilation dinner at Scully Mansion. Proceeds from the event will go to
support environmental and conservation issues, always a worthy cause.

Thanks to Enrico Nardone and the Seatuck team for organizing and
hosting this increasingly popular and exciting event. For more
information on this important organization and to view the complete list
of species  and team results, go to https://www.seatuck.org/

We hope to see everyone back next year, and welcome new teams to join
us!

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Pacific Loon JBWE Coast Guard

2019-02-16 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Location is Jones Beach West End Boat Basin, Nassau County, near the USCG
Station. We were scoping the inlet north of the comfort station. The Pacific
Loon was feeding actively and traveled a good distance from west to east as we
watched. When we left it was even with the M10 exit sign on the Meadowbrook
Parkway, far to the northeast.

[nysbirds-l] White-faced Ibis Heckscher SP, Suffolk Co.

2019-05-13 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Shai Mitra just called to report a very brightly marked White-faced
Ibis in the flooded picnic area of Field 6 at Heckscher Park, East
Islip, feeding with over 60 Glossy Ibis there.  Earlier today, Patrice
Domeischel alerted me that there were 108 Glossies there, with what she
believed was one White-faced but could not re-find it.

[nysbirds-l] White-faced Ibises Heckscher SP Suffolk Co.

2019-05-01 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Last evening I photographed (poorly, as is my usual wont) a White-faced
Ibis in non breeding plumage--no white borders around the pink eye and
facial skin, and legs pink only around the "knees", feeding with 17
Glossy Ibis in the flooded picnic area of Field 6.

This morning I checked again; there were at least 30 ibis feeding
actively in the puddles, and I immediately picked out a White-faced,
this one showing moderately distinct white borders on the face, and
brighter pink legs than yesterday's bird. I had to race off to work but
alerted Shai Mitra to be looking out for a second bird when he arrived
shortly after. Shai did indeed find what is certainly yesterday's bird
in addition to the better marked individual.

[nysbirds-l] Timber Point, Suffolk Co. info (Co. Greenshank location)

2019-05-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Apparently due to the ponding on the golf course from all the rain,
electric carts were not allowed on the course and this discouraged a lot
of golfers from coming. There were some walking the course when I left
at 7:30 but many fewer than expected.

That said, the bird flew off and did not return as of 9:00 (last news I
have). I would not give up on it though, and any news positive or
negative would be appreciated as there are folks coming from 5+ hours
away to try for it.

If you do try for it, please, please, park in the parking lot by the
clubhouse or at the marsh and not along the roadway, and please, please
do not walk onto the course. Viewing has been good from the roadway and
upper lot, and we want to maintain a good rapport with the golfers and
the cops.

On the marsh at the end of the road there are a variety of shorebirds,
Glossy Ibis, and a few singing Seaside Sparrows among the usual
denizens.

[nysbirds-l] Slingshot birds

2019-04-21 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Shai Mitra and I traveled to RI today for Easter, gnashing teeth,
tearing hair, and keening (Shai is, contrary to all expectation, one
eighth Irish and prone to keening) about missing a possible/probable
slingshot event on our Long Island beaches today, given the favorable
weather conditions for just such an event.

As it turns out, multiple reports of early trans-gulf migrants from
coastal Rhode Island today (E. Kingbird, Indigo Bunting, Blue Grosbeak,
Scarlet Tanager, Summer Tanager, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak) proved our
predictions to be true, and we're wondering if anyone on coastal LI
found any evidence of this event, other than my 6 year old great nephew,
Orion, who called us from his grandfather's house in Shirley to report a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

[nysbirds-l] Sixth Annual Seatuck LI Challenge Results

2019-10-03 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The 6th Annual Seatuck LI Birding Challenge was conducted on 28 September this
year, and despite the date being later than in past years, the weather was
still more like summer than fall. The persistent tendency for the wind to be
lightly from the northeast and the warm, sunny weather no doubt was responsible
for smaller numbers and less variety of migrant species than would be expected,
many of them most likely leftover from the last good flight day. Many folks
rued the slow pace and low number of species found on this hot day, yet
enthusiasm was still high all the way to the five o’clock hour when the
compilation and celebrations began at the lovely Scully mansion.

Competing this year were five senior teams with a total of 21 participants and
six high school teams with over a dozen (not all names were submitted). Senior
teams found 155 species, and the high school teams found 41 species; they added
two not seen by the senior teams, Ring-necked Duck and Least Tern, bringing the
total to 157 species. Not bad for a day in the doldrums!

The cumulative total for the six years now stands at 235, with four species
added this year: Lesser Scaup (Bird Brainz and Four Harbors Herons at
Connetquot River SP), Northern Saw-whet Owl (Pteam Ptarmigeddon, Northport),
Winter Wren (Outlaws, Southards Pond Park), and White-crowned Sparrow (Four
Harbors Herons, Jones Beach West End).

The Outlaws took first place with 113 species and 15 “saves” (species not seen
by any other team). All of the Outlaws have long histories competing in the
challenge, often together in various combinations, and generally producing very
competitive totals—but always short of first place. Thus, it was a satisfying
reward to finally wrest the coveted trophy from the younger whipper-snapper
teams!

In second place were the Four Harbors Herons, with 107, and in third place,
Pteam Ptarmigeddon with 100. The Three-legged Ravens! took first prize for the
high school teams, seeing an impressive 31 of the 41 total species for that
group. All the senior teams came in with multiple “saves”, making for a nice
variety of the more unusual species.

Thanks to Enrico Nardone and the Seatuck team for organizing and hosting this
increasingly popular and exciting event. For more information on this important
organization, visit the website at:

If you would like a copy of the spreadsheet breaking out the teams, species and
saves, please email me off the listserv.

We hope to see everyone back next year, and as always, we welcome new teams to
join us!
