I don't do this very often so I'm not particularly concerned about doing this easily, and I'm not particularly anxious to get another program for the few times I do this. However, there is likely a way to do this in Windows 7, and I've tried a couple of approaches without success. Is there a way to copy an entire CD to another without ripping and then burning using Windows 7 functions? Best regards, Steve Jacobson

I have used MaPlEr for years, because it is truly accessible, but most of all because you may load a playlist, for instance all the files in a folder, then navigate in them extremely easy, going from file to file with down-arrow and up-arrow and advancing and retrocedeing within a file with just right or left arrow, or in larger increments using Control or Shift simultaneously. Hello List: Well I finally decided to try and rip another CD to see whether or not I have a problem with CDEX; I grabbed an Eddy Arnold CD (believe this or not, it's one from Timelife) it put the titles in just fine! So I guess this tells me that the CDs in the Hank Williams collection cannot be ripped with the titles! Grhrhrhrhrhrhrowl! I really wanted to do that as a part of a project; I would have thought that, since this boxed set I was going to rip was a pretty popular item, that there'd be plenty of information to be gathered; guess not! And, as Steve may have accurately pointed out, Windows Media may think that it has already ripped this CD.although I really can't see any clear-cut evidence of it! I was able to delete it (at least I think I did) from the library as it kept kicking open the CD holder! In case I haven't said this enough, I am thankful that you folks on the list have stuck with me on this one! If anyone knows of a ripping program that may give me better results than CDEX or Windows Media (preferably one that if free) would sure appreciate it.although I might be willing to pay for one if it's not super-expensive! It's been a while since I used Express Rip. Last time I did it used Freeds.com You might check to see what music data base it is using and see if you can change it. From earlier posts, it sounds as if your particular disks may just not be out on the net yet and you'll need to manually tag the files. RE: victor reader stream question
I had a similar problem with my first generation Stream. I sent it back to Humanware, as with yours, it was out of warranty. They said it was a problem with the motherboard/circuit board. They were unwilling to attempt to fix it. They said I could either transfer items using an external card reader or buy a new unit. Not exactly the best customer service. I hope you've got a different problem, but I've seen reports of similar failures on many of these lists. Good luck. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Joe Bollard Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2013 9:35 AM To: pc- audio Subject: victor reader stream question hello friends, i have never had any problems with my victor reader stream which i've had for over three years and use regularly to read my audio books, but the day before yesterday i tried plugging it in to my laptop, and the laptop couldn't find it, i changed USB cables, but still no joy i tried yet another USB cable, without success, it still wasn't recognising the victor reader stream, in desperation i switched to my desktop, still no luck, i tried taking the battery out and putting it in again, zilch, the reader stream is fully charged, i have lotsof space left on it, with only one book waiting to be read, i'm totally perplexed, i'm an avid reader, and dread the thought of being without my reader, can anyone suggest something that will solve this problem for me, any help will be really appreciated, god bless, take care, travel safely, joe bollard, the republic of ireland. However, I found out that with the new version, you can not opt out of the Ask toolbar during installation. And the Ask toolbar is very difficult to eliminate. You need a program like Revo Uninstaller. Therefore, unless you have an earlier version that lets you say no to the Ask toolbar, or unless you want the Ask toolbar, I can no longer recommend Format Factory. Sign into your Amazon account. There will be a long list of things to do with your account. One of the links is entitled Your MP3 Settings. Hit enter on that and you'll find a couple of check boxes. One is to permit downloading of mp3s from the Cloud player. As I recall it's not checked by default. The other check box is to prevent downloading. When they first instituted the Cloud Player I was having a heck of a time downloading and having to play tracks, etc. Someone on one of these lists pointed out that check box to me and now it works much better. I haven't downloaded anything for a while, but the last time I purchased some tracks for my daughter a year ago, having the check box to permit downloads made it much easier to get the tracks. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Ray T. RE:
Check out http://www.emusic.com It started out as a site that emphasized alternative and independent artists and has slowly migrated to a more mainstream offering. There's still plenty of the edgy stuff though! They've just started offering a la carte purchasing, about $10 U.S. per album. If you purchase a monthly membership, you can get most track for between $.49 and $.99 They have some pretty good specials from time to time. You do need to download and install a Download Manager from their site which is inaccessible, but once you get it installed, you don't really need to do anything with it. For the most part, the site is accessible though they're running a contest right now that is not and the Customer Service is terrible, but I seldom need to deal with them. Whether there are discrete separate channels or merely reassigned portions, it still gives a slightly more immersive sound. They are now offering 7.2 channels with some receivers. I think the second speaker in back sits up higher to again give more depth and location signature. I haven't heard such a set up to tell though. I don't know, like I have said, I haven't really experienced this my self. My friend who has a 7.1 system lives too far to just say, let's go over to Tims and see what's true and what's not. But what I'm saying is, I don't know, maybe I should consider a 7.1 system if it is true and then I do miss out on stuff. I don't know. If any of you have heard a 7.1 movie, please let me know either here or off list if it really true, or if it's just marketing hipe like those guys say. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Les Gordon Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2012 10:04 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: AV Receivers with accessible web interface hi, right now i am running a onkyo 9.2 system and the extra speakers are clearly worth it. if a dvd isnt 7.1 or 9.2 recorded, the receivers can convert to whatever format your running. the sound is absolutely amazing. RE: Jawbone Jambox question
While connected to a Bluetooth device, hold down the up and down volume buttons. It will say live audio mode when the features engages. To disengage it, repeat the process, hold down the up and down volume buttons and it will say something like original. I think it will not work with a device plugged into the wired connection. The volume will noticeably drop when live audio mode is engaged. RE: express burn
I think that when you go to the NCH web site through the purchase link, you are presented with various options such as basic or plus and various other program bundles. They're pushing the plus version so it will be hard to miss that option. I believe that you can simply install over your current version without a problem. If you're concerned, remove the old one and install the new one. If you want to keep using your demo version without the fancy features, I think you can do that. What you do is go to the Add/Remove utility, find Express Burn and then when you are on the remove button, you should be able to arrow up or down to use Express Burn or something like that. It will still work as the demo. If you want the additional features, then you'll have to buy the program and some of those features are pretty nice to have. RE: burning a dtat disk with express burn
Casy, It sounds as if want you want to do is to burn .mp3 tracks to an audio disk. It doesn't sound as if you really want to burn a data disk or .mp3 disk. If that's what you want to do, do not selection data disk, select audio disk. Express Burn will perform the conversion automatically and will put the tracks in the proper form for playing on a regular cd player. I'm wondering a little about the number of tracks you want to burn. If you are really burning an .mp3 disk/data disk, then 31 tracks isn't out of the question. However, depending upon the size and length of the tracks, if you're burning them to an audio disk, 31 might be a a lot for a standard cd. If the tracks are short, say like songs from the 1950s, that might work out. If you really do want to burn a data disk, yes, you can give it whatever label you wish. It will say buring an isa disk. In the burning process, it goes through and prepares the and burns the tracks, pops the drawer open, sucks the disk back in and verifies the burn. I mention this so it doesn't surprise you! Good luck with your project. I hope I haven't confused things for you. RE: powered desktop speakers
Yes there is a rather good sized sub-woofer into which the additional speakers connection and the sub plugs into the output jack of the computer. I like my rock and roll so volume is important. However, I also listen to a lot of acoustic music i.e. folk, choral and world music. The SoundSticks have a nice transparency. The design is quite striking as the tweeters are about a foot tall columns. There is a touch control on either side of a sound port on the right hand speaker column to raise and lower the volume. The sub is shaped somewhat like a small bee hive and sits on small legs. The sub definitely needs to be on a hard flat surface rather than on thick carpeting to get the best effect of the sub. I have the Sound Sticks 2 version. A remote control would be a nice addition, but I don't know if they've added one or not. I've never tried comparing these to other higher end computer speakers and the B and W's do sound as if they'd be awesome. However the price on those is prohibitive for me while the SoundSticks were only a mild stretch! RE: express burn help neededplease
Mybe this will help. 1. Hit alt+f to bring up the file menu. The first option will be to select the type of disk you want to create i.e. music, data, etc. Hit enter and enter again. 2. You will be back in the program's main menu. tab down to add files or folder depending upon which you want. If adding files, you will need to repeat the process several times to make sure you've got the tracks you want. 3. Once you've finished adding files or folders tab down and set any options you wish such as normalize of cd track info. 4. tab to the burn button and hit enter. It seems to me that either you hit enter or use the spacebar. One or the other works and the other doesn't. 5. This brings up a menu with number of copies and burn speed. Make your selections and again tab to burn and trigger the button. Assuming you have a disk in the drive it should burn. If you don't already have a disk in the drive, it will prompt you to put a disk and then you'll have to verify the selections. Good luck. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Alan Pollard Sent: Monday, March 28, 2011 1:38 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: express burn help neededplease Hi List,as I am unfamiliar with ,express burn after trying to set same up to burn :an Audio cd have done the usual preperation ,ie placed the mp3 files together in a folder moved to the add tab and many other actions without any luck I would be much appreciative if anyone could post a step by step guide or some advise please! The Squeezebox Boom is a free standing boom box affair that allows you to play internet radio and I believe content stored on your computer via a wireless ethernet connection. There is also a Squeezebox Duet, which hooks up to your stereo like a conventional tuner, but permits the wireless playing of internet radio and stored content. RE: Software Question
Kris, Light Scribe is a combination of software and hardware as someone previously noted. You must have a Light Scribe capable drivein your computer or as an external drive. Assuming that you have that, your computer may already have the software for burning labels onto Light Scribe disks. You have to have special disks, however, they are readily available and are not much more expensive than regular writeable or rewriteable disks. If you have Light Scribe label burning software on your computer already, it might come as part of Nero or Sonic Record Now or other cd burning programs. You can buy specifically designed labelling programs, but I've found these mostly to be too graphical in nature to use easily as a blind person. You can get a variety of Light Scribe software packages including system software and labelling programs for free at lightscribe.org After you have burned music or data onto a Light Scribe disk, you flip the disk over in the drive and load the labelling program. Fill out the edit boxes and burn the label. I'm told that often the labels are a little faint, but you can burn over the label a second time to darken the label print. If you have other questions, please let me know. Kim, I'm not sure what the issue with the Amazon Download Manager is that you're describing. Once you install it, it's operation is pretty much automatic. The one trick that you have to remember is that instead of clicking on save when you're getting ready to download an album, you must click open. Once you do that, the download begins and the files are place in an Amazon folder in the My Music folder. The Download Manager will also open Windows Media Player to place a link to the file in the Media Player library. Hope this helps. Even a small battery powered pair of speakers may help if it's the internal speakers causing the problem. RE: Crackling, staticky cound on my laptop
It sounds as if it's bad speaker connections or speakers then. Either a usb powered external speaker or speaker pair or external speakers that plug into the headphone jack may be you're best answer. I know on a netbook I bought, the speakers are ok at low to moderate levels, but anything that pushes the speakers hard, results in distortion. Can you adjust the tone balance to reduce bass? If so shifting the sound more towards the high ends might reduce the crackling some. ford -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Joel Deutsch Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2010 1:47 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Crackling, staticky cound on my laptop Ford, Thanks for the reply. RE: Hi, I'm a new list member
Hello Mike, Before trying to give some help, I have a question. Are you wanting to copy whole cds or individual tracks or both? If what you really want is to supplement your personal collection, then finding a piece of software that will directly copy a disk would be your best bet. Try looking at http://www.jaws-users.com or http://www.blind-computing.com for free or low cost software to perform direct copying of a cd. If, however, you want to access your music on your computer in .wav or some compressed format such as .mp3 or .wma, you will first need to rip the tracks from the disk to your computer. I can only give generally directions for using WMP for this as it's not how I do it. You can use WMP or a variety of free or for cost programs to performing the ripping part. I think in WMP, you place your source disk in the disk drive, and go to the rip menu in WMP. There you will have various selections to make as to quality and format.. Generally speaking, the higher the sampling rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file size. When you rip the tracks to your harddrive, they will generally wind up in the My Music folder of you’re my Documents folder. I believe that you can set WMP to automatically rip the tracks of any previously unripped disk when you put a disk in your disk drive. I'm going to beg off trying to describe how to burn disks in WMP, as I've never really figured that out myself. I believe you should be able to find a tutorial on either of the pages I previously provided. Sorry if this is a bit sketchy, but the considerations are one you need to make to help us give you more info. Use the sources of info at Jaws-users and blind-computing, they're great. There is an exceptionally good tutorial on the use of WMP. As far as speed of burning, my experience has been that a lower burn rate than the highest yields the best results. I would suggest medium or fast instead of fastest. Good luck starting out. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of mbern6...@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, January 26, 2010 3:19 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Hi, I'm a new list member Hello,I just subscribed to the pc-audio mailing list today, and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Mike. I live in the western New York area, Rochester, NY. to be exact. Although I have good computer skills, I’m no computer geek. I serve as a volunteer dj at a local community college, to which I’m also a student of here in Rochester. I’m interested in learning about how to burn audio cds, so that I can supplement my existing physical cd library. I'm currently using Windows xp and Windows media player 11. To be completely honest, I've never, ever burnt a cd before in my life, and don't know the first thing about doing that stuff. Sometimes digital technology can be very overwhelming, even for a young person like myself. If any of you have ever done it, could someone give me step-by-step instructions, as to an accessible way to burn audio cds that will play in any cd player, using wmp 11? The screen reader I’m currently using, is Window-eyes 6.1. Basically, I'd like to know how to burn an audio cd in wmp 11 using just the keyboard itself, I'd prefer not to mess with the mouse. Finally, in windows media player 11, I’ve noticed, that in the burn menu, I am given four options for the speed of the burning process: 1. fastest 2. fast 3. medium 4. slow. Is it necessary to adjust the burn speed? And also in the drop-down menu within this same dialog, it says, “add a list of all burned files to the disc in this format. The top-most option in this menu, is .wpl, and it’s selected by default. What does this mean? I'm looking forward to talking with all of you on the list. Mike Rochester, NY. P.S. Just for clairification, are the built-in utility found in Windows xp and windows media player two different programs? Or is the utility part of windows media player. I already know, that windows media player automatically inserts seconds of silence between audio tracks, but is there any way to turn that option off? For example, what if I’m burning an album, which already has seconds of silence between the tracks. Is there any way to prevent the player from inserting silence between tracks when burning? RE: MEDIA CENTER COMPUTER
Back to my work computer! I watch through the computer monitor. Although as I said in an earlier post, the monitor can double as a stand alone tv. The set up routine in the Windows XP Media Center doesn't read very well especially in the area of setting up speakers. There are some other things that don't read, but selecting the default can get you through. As I recall, there is one thing you need to check for getting the Guide updated that if not checked tosses you out and I needed some help with that. I use Jaws so I don't know how set up might go with Windows Eyes or System Access. It's been around a year since I had to set up anything. If you go with a Windows Media Center, remember that it's fairly tightly bound to the hardware and software that comes bundled. It comes with a version of Sonic and Nero for some of the cd and dvd related functions. When I first got mine, I tried to load an old copy of Roxio Easy CD Creater and it turned the computer into a jabbering paperweight. I had to do a reinstall from the restore disks to get things right. However, I've since added cd burners like Express burn and other programs without a problem. I guess make sure that you're backed up before you try adding something. Good luck. I really like and enjoy my Media Center and it has been great to be able to record things while away for a weekend, etc. Let me know if you have any other questions. clifford -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Brett Boyer Sent: Friday, January 08, 2010 10:43 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: MEDIA CENTER COMPUTER Hey! The card that came with mine is a single source card so you can watch one show and record one other channel at the same time. I believe you can get cards that allow you to record a couple of things at the same time while watching a third. Recording shows takes up lots of space so get a system with as large a hard drive as you can and back up the shows or move them to another drive so they don't record over themselves! Once a show is recorded, you can edit out commercials using a program like Vide Redo Suite or Lifextender. The second is only availabe of Vista so far as I know. I probably record three or four shows a day for my kids and they accummulate up to about 50 shows before they start recording over themselves. So once a week I either edit the commercials out and save the resultant file to a dvd or to another drive or move some of the recorded shows until I can find the time for editing. I don't know about how well this works in VISTA or Windows 7 machines, but in my XP Media Center, it's pretty flawless. Let me know if you have more questions. Sorry that I'm responding from a different address. RE: MEDIA CENTER COMPUTER
I don't know of where to go, but I use an XP Media Center computer with Jaws and Charter cable. It all works pretty slickly. I've heard that there may be a little less functionality with VISTA or Windows 7 Media Center computers, but can't attest to that. If you have questions, I'll try to answer them. Though I can easily find tv programs, record them and play them back and play dvds, I can't say that the interface for other functions isn't a little clunky from time to time. A friend sent me an article indicating that the same operating system used in the new Iphone gs is also present in the Ipod Touch. RE: Is it possible to edit video?
I have heard of an addition program for Vista users call Lifxtender or something close to that. The review I read says it's exceptional fast and accurate. However, it's not available for XP and that's what I use. If anyone tries it let us know how it works. Your source is wrong on a couple of counts. First disks are not so expensive as he indicates. Second, you can get disks in a variety of colors and the labels are not at all difficult to read. RE: Printing on CD label --LightScribe
Peter and Gary, You've been pointed to Chip Orange's excellent template for printing Avory cd/dvd labels in Word. However, that does not actually print on the cd or dvd. The LightScribe technology allows one to burn a simple or quite elaborate label on the label side of a LightScribe enabled disk with the appropriate software and a LightScribe enabled cd/dvd burner. Essentially, you burn the music or data to your disk using whatever program you are accustomed to using. When that is done, flip the disk over in the burner and go into your labelling program. There are free stand alone programs that you can get at http://www.lightscribe.org Or many cd burning programs such as Nero or Roxio include LightScribe labelling in their laebl creation sub-programs. I use a simple stand alone program from the LightScribe site. You enter the program, fill into a couple fields of information i.e. artist and disk name, hit next and then burn label and in a couple of minutes you have a print quality label on the disk. As mentioned about, you need a LightScribe enabled burner and LightScribe enabled disk. They are virtually the same cost as regular high quality disks. There was a compeating technology released at the same time as LightScribe, but I haven't heard anything more about it in the last couple of years. RE: is lightscribe accessible?
Yes it is. If you go to lightscribe.org and download LightScribe Simple Labeller, you can write a label on the disk. You probably can't include all the track names, but you can easily put your name and the name of the disk. You need a burner that is enabled with LightScribe and disks that are LightScribe enabled. When you are done burning the music to the disk, flip the disk over in the same drive and go to the LightScribe burning program. Open it and follow the prompts. There are other LightScribe programs that permit creation of fancier disk labels, but I haven't tried those. Sonic and Nero and I presume Roxio all have LightScribe labelling components to them.
