Re: help with an audio problem
So, let me see if I understand the situation. The 3.5mm jack on the back of the TV is the ONLY means of getting audio out from the TV. And, that jack is the only audio out that will also carry content from the satellite and DVD player. And, if something is plugged into that jack then the TV speakers are silenced. Is this right? So, I guess you have to use that single jack for both purposes. Then the only way for your dad to listen using bluetooth headphones and others to listen at the same time by speakers is to split the audio signal coming out from that jack. Here's a couple options as I see them: 1. Use a simple headphone splitter making 2 3.5mm audio jacks. One can be used for his bluetooth headphones transmitter and the other can go to a powered speaker using a patch cord or a second bluetooth transmitter and using a bluetooth speaker. 2. Or, you could use that jack to connect audio into a small amplifier. Then you could connect both the bluetooth headphones and any speaker system you care to use. HTH, Jeff At 09:48 AM 1/10/2015, you wrote: Hi My dad has problems hearing the tv, he has just got a set of bluetooth headphones but he doesn't want to use the 3.5 ml jack on the back of the tv, he would rather use the phono connections on the tv but there are 5 connections but according to the tv manual they are only for receiving audio and not transmitting audio. We have tried using them but the sound from the tv doesn't come through the audio part of the 5 set of phono connections. According to the manual you have to use a pair of two plugs plus a set of 3 but they are not audio out. If we plug the headphones in the rear of the satellite box, the headphones work perfectly but he cannot get the sound from the dvd through the satellite, only through the tv. The dvd doesn't have a scart connection on it, only hdmi. The satellite doesn't have a hdmi connection only scart and one pair of phono connectors. We have looked at hdmi to scart converters, they are very expensive. On my own tv setup I have the tv and dvd connected to the satellite and I am able to hear everything through my surround system. According to the questions and answers concerning the particular headphones the senheizer rs170, you can get a special adapter that creates another 3.5 ml connection on the rear of the tv but I know little about this kind of thing. Dad doesn't want to have to keep unplugging the headphones from the tv, plus if we all want to listen to the tv, it won't be possible without several sets of headphones, what is the best way around this please? Dad is insisting on using the phono connections. Help!! Regards Adrien - No virus found in this message. Re: Best Bluetooth speaker
I have recently purchased the Creative Roar bluetooth speaker from Amazon for $150. Although I have only heard the small JamBox this Creative speaker is far better, as it should be for being much larger. Don't know how it compares with a Bose SoundLink 3 or large JamBox. The Roar is about 10 inches wide, 7 inches deep and 2 inches high. It has an extremely solid feel and lots of weight, likely due to the 6 amp battery in it. It has 2 different amplifiers: one to drive the base speaker, and one to drive the 2 other speakers for mids and highs. The sound is extremely balanced throughout the range. There's a roar button that boosts the sound to more fully fill a room. Volume goes quite loud with no distortion. There are lots of reviews on Amazon. Admittedly, a significant number of the reviews seem over the top in their praise. But, in my personal listening I find the speaker extremely good for the price. Re: SoundBlaster Roar - was portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
This Creative speaker sounds quite good. Thanks for the details. One question is, Does it have A2DP so VoiceOver is also heard through the speaker when using an iDevice? I'm catching up with PC Audio messages a little late. I see Pete has a SoundBlaster Roar wireless speaker. I've been looking at this off and on for a while now but have held back because I've never been sure whether the controls are accessible to someone who is totally blind. This especially as it has a lot of features which could potentially make it quite complicated to operate. Anyway, two things coincided. I just read Pete's post about the Roar and Creative have just (possibly temporarily) dropped the price to £99. I'm just wondering if Pete has had any issues with the controls as I know it has a lot of selectable options? I've got the Boes Soundlink Mini which is good but sometimes a little too bassy. And I had hoped too sometimes use the Mini via Bluetooth with Jaws from my PC but found that the Mini kind of cuts off the beginning of Jaws audio unless it is getting continuous sound. Anyway, I'm really interested in the versatility of the Ror and it's currently a great price. Thanks for any info. I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with portable bluetooth capable devices. For reasons not particularly relevant to this list, I won't have access to that speaker during the school year, since it will be going to school with my spouse. So I'm wondering about other alternatives, perhaps even some that might not be as pricy as the Bose. I've just read about the BW t7, which actually costs more than the Bose. Then there are Braven models which look interesting, albeit not much less costly than the Bose. Since all my devices are ios, I could also use airplay, not necessary to have bluetooth. What are people using and really liking in this category? Mary - No virus found in this message. Checked by AVG - www.avg.com

Re: Bluetooth Device
Hi, Andrea, I have a bluetooth transmitter made by Taotronics. It is about the shape and size of 3 sticks of chewing gum one on top of the other. It has a 3-inch cord with a male 3.5mm stereo plug. Re: Using Gain In MP3 Direct Cut
Tom, These are my steps for increasing or decreasing the gain throughout a file. First, I do Ctrl-A to select the entire file, which is the same as Rich did with marking the beginning and end of the file. Use Ctrl-G to bring up the Gain menu. You are now on a scroll bar for setting the gain level for the start of the file. By default you're on 32 of 90; I usually lower the number to something like 28 or 25 to moderately increase the gain. Tab to the next scroll bar which sets the gain for the end of the file. Set the same number for this if you want an even increase across the entire file. Press O to close the gain menu. Hi, Tom, I'll take a stab at what you might do different. Control-P brings up the edit box with the time info in it. The first number is the total length of the file shown in minutes, seconds and fractions of a second. Hours would be shown if necessary. The second number is the current position also listed in minutes, seconds and fractions of seconds. It is the current time that you need to edit. Be careful not to remove the punctuation marks like apostrophe which delineate the minutes from second, etc. After editing, press Enter to jump to the new time location. First, how do you mark a file from the beginning to a certain point, or from a specific place to the end. As an example, I have a track that has about a second of the next track in it. I want to get rid of this portion of the file. What do I do in Direct Cut to accomplish this. My second question is related. How do I move the beginning and end markers to exactly mark the part of a file that I want to work with? Let's say I don't exactly have the part of a file I want to delete. How do I fix this? I just thought of a third question. How do you get mp3 Direct cut to start from the beginning of what's selected, or the beginning of a file, for that matter. Right now if
Re: Files reversing from copying to burning
This querky behavior shows up in a number of ways when selecting contiguous files. The way I work around this is to select the files to be copied in reverse order. Then just copy or cut and then paste as you always would. HTH, Jeff At 05:49 PM 4/23/2013, you wrote: Hi all, probably a simpple answer to this one. Does MP3DirectCut work with Windows 7 and 8?
Hello, list, I've used MP3DirectCut for years on my XP machine. Soon I'll need to get a new laptop with either Windows 7 or Windows 8. Does MP3DirectCut work with both? If so, does it work equally well on either or are there precautions I need to consider? Thanks for any advice. Hi, Chris, I read somewhere that this is possible with MP3Direct Cut using cut/copy and paste, but I didn't get it to work for me. I use an older version, I think 1.31, which has a much cleaner and simpler way of doing it. Hopefully you can find an old version still with this feature. Re: MP3 Direct Cut Question
Hi, Tom, Yes you can easily do this. Find the beginning point of the section you wish to save, press the space bar to stop playback, press the letter B. Then find the end point, stop playback and press N. At this point, you can fine tune the location of the beginning point by pressing the numbers 1 and 2 respectively for moving this point forward or backward. Move the end point with 3 and 4 respectively. These are the numbers on the top row of the keyboard and not the number pad. You can listen to the audio around these two points, use the F5 and F6keys to hear the few seconds of audio prior to and following the beginning point, and F7 and F8 to hear audio before and after the end point. When your satisfied with these locations, press Ctrl-E to save this section. You can edit the original filename to whatever you want it to be. Windows XP and using a bluetooth headset
I recently purchased an Arctic P311 blutooth headset. It is my first experience with any bluetooth device. I easily and successfully got it going with my iPhone. But it's a different story with my Windows XP laptop. I'm using the laptop's built-in bluetooth capability. I wanted to use the headset on the laptop for going completely silent with hearing my screen reader, etc. However, after a bit of fussing, it looks like I can only use the headphones to hear audio generated by a media player on the laptop. I hear that audio through the headset but the screen reader through the laptop speakers. Can I change something so I can hear all audio through the headset? Or, do I need to get a bluetooth dongle to broadcast all the laptop's audio? Please clarify this issue for me. I tried looking further into it but haven't found anything so far. Re: where to find MP3 Direct Cut tutorial
Which type of tutorial are you looking for? I have the MP3 audio tutorial files. I can email them to you if you wish and if they make it through any attachment barriers. I also have two different sets of text instructions. One came off the internet and the other I have worked up. I will paste both of them after my name below. HTH, Jeff MP3 Direct Cut is a free direct mp3 editor, splitter, cutter and recorder. Download it from http://www.mpesch3.de Some brief notes regarding keyboard shortcuts for this program are as follows: Play and Stop by using the SpaceBar. During playback, the F8 key will increase playback speed and F7 will decrease it. Rewind and fast forward using cursor left and right or page-up and page-down. The latter two keys move in larger increments than the first two. The number of frames each pair moves can be set via the menu system. Marking a selection for deletion, saving as a separte file, etc: Use the letter b to mark the beginning of a selection Use the letter n to mark the end of a selection NotePlayback must be stopped when marking the beginning and end of a selection by using the Spacebar. The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys, not the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. These commands move by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second: 1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left 2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right 3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left 4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a selection are: F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch the MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts can be made quickly. There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into a different file. For instance, Ctrl-E will save the selection with its own filename. and Ctrl-W will save the entire audio using the current name or edit it to something different. To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system. It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go from one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left. The file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions in an MP3 file. To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box is a bit strange. Don't delete the words in it, just modify the numbers for the current file position. One has to leave alone the apostrophes, which separate hours minutes and seconds. The program needs these apostrophes Then, there are the recording shortcuts. r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the recording level p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open s: Stops the recording. My personal set of Notes. Page Up to move back or page down to go forward in fairly large time increments. Use left and right arrows to move in smaller increments. Space bar to begin and stop playback. Ctrl F4 to close a window within MP3 Direct Cut. Recording Consider muting Window Eyes. Press R to open recording screen. Press P to begin and S to stop. If Append is checked in the configuration window, stopping and restarting recording will continue in the same file thus acting as a pause function. Marking beginning end of selection. Press B for beginning or N for end while playback is stopped. 1 and 2 will adjust begin point B backward or forward. 3 and 4 will adjust end point N backward or forward. These commands move by frame and are quite precise. To listen to where the B and N marks are, use f5 and f6 to hear before and after point B; and use f7 and f8 to hear before and after point N. Use F9 to hear what the audio would be like if you were to delete the currently selected segment of audio. To append a file you must be using the older version 1.39: Open the file to be appended to the end of another file, Open File Menu and select Append To. Press Shift Tab to locate file to append it to. When desired file is found, just press Enter and it is done. Then close this window with Ctrl F4. press Control+A to select all, and then I believe the keystroke is Control+D. This should open up a dialog box like a Windows explorer window to allow selection of the file to append

The podcast feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/RobsPlace If I recall correctly, the biggest difference is how MP3 DirectCut used to have a simple append feature up til and including version 1.51. Re: If it's stealing, then please explain...
One big difference with passing around a print book compared to a digital file... One cannot read the book once it's in someone else's hands. Copying a digital file and passing it on gives all new recipients the opportunity to listen all at the same time. The real comparable would be to delete your copy of a digital file when you pass along a copy. Jeff At 12:43 PM 4/19/2010, you wrote: the closest I can come is that a cd or book that is handed to someone else would be a rare incident that it is handed to a thousand people within a week. yet, this can happen with digital material. - Original Message - From: James Homuth ja...@the-jdh.com To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Monday, April 19, 2010 1:04 PM Subject: If it's stealing, then please explain... ... Why it is sales and other revenue in every industry supposedly effected by this so-called theft continue to increase. Year over year, DVD sales, music sales, and movie rentals have undergone a significant increase, so says just about every independant study not in the pocket of the RIAA and MPAA. Which, escentially, is just about everyone who isn't the RIAA and MPAA. Even online methods that are considered legal (Netflicks, etc) have seen increases to their rental and streaming revenue, in spite of the fact places like Blockbuster are establishing agreements with studios to arange it so that Netflicks doesn't see new releases from those studios until 28 days after Blockbuster receives those same new releases. Also, while you're at it, kindly explain why it is sales of books in just about every format continue to increase, in spite of the fact industry lobbiests continue to insist they're all taking a drastic nose dive the likes of which haven't been seen since the Titanic sank. Additionally, explain this to me. If getting your hands on a copy of a book, CD or movie you haven't paid for is so illegal/immoral/otherwise a sin on the same level as breaking into a store and taking something, why is the exchanging/giving away/otherwise distributing of actual, hard copy books still so popular? It's far from uncommon for avid book readers to read something, then pass it on to someone else to read, who will then pass it on to someone else while at the same time passing something they'd just finished reading back the other way. That's not considered illegal, and has been going on arguably since the invention of books. But yet, the same copy of that book is being passed from one hand to another. It hasn't been paid for by these other people. It hasn't resulted in any compensation whatsoever to the author from these other people for the privelege of reading that book. And no one's thrown a fit over billions upon billions of lost sales dollars because each and every one of those people who dared crack that book didn't pony up the money for their own copy before doing so. Why is that so different from the digital era, in spite of the fact the only real change is now if someone else wants to read that book, the original buyer doesn't have to give up their copy? I'd really appreciate hearing the explanation for that from some of these folks who seem to be under the impression we've all joined the rip off the author/musician/actor bandwagon here. Anyone? I'm also told that there are some major software upgrades for Victor coming in the near future, one of which will allow you to store your recordings in a different format such as wave for transfer straight to a PC or Mac and that's about time too! and this has been my major gripe about the player from day one - particularly given that I use a Mac most of the time and there's no way of converting files from the Victor's format to something standard with the Mac, this should fix the problem. The other slight annoyance I have with the Victor Reader Stream is its incredibly slow rate of transfer using USB cable and I'd be interested to hear an explanation from Humanware as to why this is, I can only hope that transfer speeds are faster on the Book Sense. If you're prepared to be a little adaptive then the problem can of course be solved by purchasing a memory card reader but make sure you read the manual first so you know what goes into what folder on the card, how to arrange things etc. -- Dane Trethowan From Melton Victoria Australia mailto:grtd...@internode.on.net Phone United Kingdom 02032874641 Phone Australia :0390058589 Phone United States :8159261869 Fax (+61 3) 9743 7954 Mobile/SMS +61 438 571201 MSN grtd...@dane-trethowan.net skype:grtdane12 Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/grtdane blog: http://www.grtdane.wordpress.com __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4713 (20091223) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4713 (20091223) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com -- Dane Trethowan From Melton Victoria Australia mailto:grtd...@internode.on.net Phone United Kingdom 02032874641 Phone Australia :0390058589 Phone United States :8159261869 Fax (+61 3) 9743 7954 Mobile/SMS +61 438 571201 MSN grtd...@dane-trethowan.net skype:grtdane12 Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/grtdane blog: http://www.grtdane.wordpress.com __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4713 (20091223) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to:

Hello, Grant, I seem to recall something recently about SeroTech having a stand-alone version of Eloquence available for sale. Try contacting them to see if it will work in something like Text Aloud. Re: CD E X tutorial?
Here's a tutorial I have used over the years. *** CD EX - from How to Corner http://www.blind-corners.com/CDex.htm CD ex Version 1.51 This is a great little program that can do several things, plus, it is very easy to use. Another good plus to this program is that you need no scripts or anything to make it work with Jaws for Windows. You can use the program to: rip music files from a CD, convert existing sound files to MP3 files, and record audio from an external device through your line in jack on the back of your system. You will find step by step instructions on how to do all of the following, plus how to set the program up after installing it below. If you haven't yet downloaded the program and installed it on your system, then just hit enter on the following link to download Cdex 1.51 http://www.blind-corners.com/cdex151.exe/ *How to for Cdex 1.51 Contents Setting up the program for the first time Selecting a bit rate for ripping Creating a file format for ripping Ripping music files from a CD Selecting multi files from a CD Selecting all files from a CD Converting wav files to MP3 or MP3 files to Wav Recording from a external device *Setting up the program for the first time There are a few settings that must be set once the program is installed. Follow these steps to set the program up and get it ready to use. 1. Start the program and hit F4 to open the Cdex configuration dialog box. 2. By default you are on the encoder tab. Use Control tab until you hear, remote CDDB tab. 3. Tab once and you should hear, your email address: edit. Enter your email address. 4. Tab about four times until you hear, auto connect to remote CDDB checkbox not checked. Hit the space bar to check the checkbox. 5. Now control tab until you hear, file names tab. 6. You should be automatically put in the file name format edit box. This is where you can choose how your file name is created using things like artist name, album name, track number and etc. If you plan on ripping Music from a CD, then this is where you tell Cdex how you want your file names created. Below is what each %Number stands for and some examples. You can either leave it the way it is with the default setting, use one of the examples, or create your own. Here is what each %Number stands for: %1, artist name %2, Album name %3, track # %4, track name (song title) %5, CD volume ID %6, CDDB ID %7, track # leading 0 %8, total # of tracks %Y, album year %G, genre \ (back slash), can be used to specify folder directories Some Examples using the above items: %1\%2\%7-%4 (default), creates the following output, Artist folder\Album folder\track# starting with 0-track name.wav or MP3. %1\%2\%4 creates the following output, Artist folder\Album folder\Track name.wav or MP3. %1-%2-%3 creates the following output file name, Artist name-Album name-track #.wav or MP3. %1\%1-%4 creates the following output, artist folder\Artist name-track name.wav or MP3. 7. Tab two times and you will be in an edit box with a directory. This is the directory where your wav and MP3 files will be saved. To change the directory just hit enter on the directory name and it will bring up a computer tree view. Use your up and down arrows to navigate the tree view, and the right and left arrows to open folders. Once you are where you want wav files to be saved, tab to the okay button and hit enter. 8. Tab one time and you will be in an edit box that displays the directory where recorded files will be saved. To change the directory just hit enter on the directory name and it will bring up a computer tree view so you can select where you want recorded files to be saved. Once you have chosen the directory, just tab to the okay button and hit enter. 9. Your done setting up the program. Just tab to the OK button and hit enter. *Selecting a bit rate for ripping The bit rate is the quality at which you will rip the songs from the CD. The default bit rate is 128, but you can select any bit rate between 32 kbs and 320 kbs. For ripping audio tracks from a CD, I would recommend 128 kbs or above. Most people use anywhere from 128 kbs to 192 kbs. To change the bit rate for ripping, do the following: 1. Open the CDex program. 2. Hit f4 to bring up the configuration dialog box. 3. You should land in the encoder page, but if not hit control tab until you are in the encoder page. 4. Tab four to five times until you hear, bit rate combo box 128 kbs. 5. Now you can arrow up and down to change the bit rate to whatever you like. 6. Tab to the OK button and hit the space bar. Your done! * Creating a file format for ripping This is where you can choose how your file name is created using things like artist name, album name, track number and etc. If you plan on ripping Music from a CD, then this is where you tell Cdex how you want your file names created. Re: Simple Sound Editing Program that's easy to use
Hi, Jim, This is easily done with MP3 Direct Cut. 1. Open the program. 2. type Ctrl-o to open an MP3 file to edit. 3. Shift-Tab to get into a standard Windows file browsing and open dialogue box. Locate the file you want and press enter. 4. Press the spacebar to toggle playback on and off. 5. Use the right and left arrows to move ahead or back in small increments; or use page-up and page-down for larger increments. 6. When you are at the starting point of the section to remove, stop playback and press the B key. 7. Resume playback until you reach the end point of the section to remove, stop playback and press the letter N. 8. Now you can finely adjust the start and end points in this way. Use the F1 and F2 keys to move the start point back or ahead in very small increments, like 1 32nd of a second. The F3 and F4 will do this for the end point. 9. Use the F5 and F6 keys to review the audio just prior and following the start point; likewise use F7 and F8 to review the audio just prior and following the end point. You can use the F9 key to listen to what the audio will sound like if the selected audio were deleted. 10. When ready, press the delete key to remove the selected audio. 11. Ctrl-Z will undo the last editing if need be. 12. Save the edited file with Ctrl-W and follow the prompts to confirm. That's it. MP3 Direct Cut is really a fast and easy program for minor editing like this. If you wish to clear this file and open another for editing just use Ctrl-F4. Re: voice recorders that append
Hi, Steve, I can only speak to the operation of the Sony ICD-B25 which is about 7 years old now. It is quite easy to use with the audio beeps function turned on (which is by default). The clock and alarm functions are totally inaccessible but all the basic and intermediate functions are fine, such as: record, stop, playback and skip forward and back; splitting a recording, joining 2 recordings, erasing a recording; moving from one folder to another, and so on. But I cannot say what features remain accessible in currently-available models. As for price, 7 years ago I paid about $75 but that's not going to tell you what they cost today since recording capacities have improved so dramatically and features added like stereo recording. Re: voice recorders that append
I'm a little late on this thread. I have an older Sony ICD-B25 voice recorder which does append. On the hunch that Sony still makes recorders with this feature I checked out the first one I found on Amazon: Sony ICD-P520 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash Memory and USB and found this in its feature list: * Add Recording: Insert and add additional information to any message without affecting the original. Re: Free CD Burner?
Fred's Head Companion recently highlighted a CD/DVD Burner which was free and has a very screen reader friendly interface. Re: Zen Stone Plus Question
Hello, Larry, Creative has made it confusing in the way they have incrimentally adjusted names for new players as they come on line. To answer you directly, the Zen Stone Plus has a radio and voice recorder along with a screen menu system. Not me, but others say they have learned to navigate the menus without sight. However, it sounds to me you are more interested in the 4 GB capacity than the radio and recorder functions. So, read on. There is also a new line of Zen Stone players with a built-in speaker. There is a 4 GB model. I have also recently purchased a MuVo T100 player with 4GB capacity. I really like it. It has no screen and no speaker. It functions just like a Zen Stone of which I own a 1 GB model. If I had known of the Zen Stone with speaker prior to buying my MuVo T100 I probably would have bought the Stone with speaker. In any case, you and others might like to know that I just saw this weekend that Creative has a sale going on for their MP3 players and other items. See below Jeff Samco Nevada City, California Forwarded Message I just found out that www.giveawayoftheday.com has 2nd Speech Center as its free download today. 2nd Speech is a text reading software program that does a pretty good job. It will read documents, email, internet, etc. GiveAwayoftheDay.com gives one application and one game away free daily. There is no charge, no registration but you must install the program and activate it the same day you download it. The program is free because you get no upgrades and no technical support. but it's free. I've gotten lots of great programs and games from this site. For DRM WMA files you have to use something like the Overdrive transfer tool or Windows Media Player. This is because license information needs to accompany the files so the player knows it is alright to play them. Otherwise, the files are unplayable. Simple sound settings restoration program
This simple, new program was recently announced in IRTI's email newsletter called News Clips. I don't know anything more about it except the exerpt I have included here. Sounds like it could be useful in a number of situations. Jeff - What Happened to my audio! Do you ever find after someone else had been using your PC that changes in your audio settings mysteriously occurred or is completely shutdown rendering your screen reader useless? Have you ever installed or used unfamiliar software and magically your PC systems audio output is disabled? We can tell you that IRTI tech support hears about this scenario so often it has prompted us to write a New Talking Utility we referred to as Audio SafeGuard. Audio SafeGuard is a simple self voicing control that enables you to adjust your PC's default audio settings providing accessible control for Volume level and Mute State for your Master Volume, WAV audio output, CD Player, SW Synth, Microphone and Line input devices. The next time Audio SafeGuard is launched, it compares the current default PC audio settings to the stored preference file and automatically resets all audio parameters back to your preferred audio settings. Audio SafeGuard can be configured to run automatically when your computer starts up or you can launch the application manually with a hot-key.In either case, your preferred audio settings are automatically restored without the need to ask for sighted assistance. If set to run at start up, Audio SafeGuard temporarily loads, runs a sound check, then automatically exits operation freeing its memory space for other applications. IRTI's Talking Utility - Audio SafeGuard is now included on IRTI Turnkey Computer systems. You may also download a 30-day trial version from IRTI's web site. If you find this to be a useful utility, and we think you will, the 30 day trial version may be purchased and activated for $9. http://www.irti.net Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Creative Zen Stone Player
As an alternative, aren't there battery charging units that plug into a USB port? Power comes from loading batteries into the charging unit. Re: splitting long shows into smaller files using Replay A/V 8.04
Hi, Chris, All I can offer to you is to say you correctly described the way of having a recording automatically split every 60 minutes. I have used the same settings to split a 3-hour recording I do daily into 3 60 minute files. In the Split tab I have nothing else checked nor entered with data. I suggest you do some experimenting with short splits of a minute or 2 so you can do some immediate verification, until you can have it working. HTH, Jeff At 10:32 AM 2/10/2007, you wrote: Hi folks Subject line basically says what I'd like to do. I record several radio shows that are about 3 to 4 hours in length, and so I figured I would try to figure out a way to split the mp3s of the shows I record into smaller files, 1 hour in length each. It just makes it easier to navigate a long show like that. Ok, so I went into the ssplitting tab of the preferences, and if you use your screenreader's review cursor, there are several different fields you can fill in, depending on when you want the file to split. So first I checked the box that says, split tracks every, followed by a value of 60, thinking that it would split the file into 4 smaller ones, one for each hour of the show. I left the other fields alone because they just determine other times a ffile can be split, so I left those alone. Well, as you can probably guess, it didn't work for whatever reason. I got absolutely no recording when I did this, and I'm just wondering if I'm doing something wrong? unfortunately, the fields in that particular dialogue aren't very easily read when you press your tab key at least with JAWS 8.0 they aren't. When you press your tab key, you hear, split tracks at edit, split tracks at edit, split tracks at edit...it's really confusing. To make sure i'm absolutely clear here, let's say I'm recording a show that lasts 4 hours long. What I'd like to do is to split the recording of this show into 4 smaller files, 1 hour each. i know other programs can do this task as well, but when I record a show, I would like for replay A/V to do it automatically. i don't want to have to record the show and then load this big file into sound forge and then split it up. I know Replay A/V can do it, I just need to work out how to do it exactly. So if anyone can help that'd be wonderful. Thanks. Re: Is there such a thing as a blind friendly player thatplaysbothRAXand Wma/drm files?
Brent, I did not put the Rock Box firmware on my iRiver T30 flash player. The firmware is directly from iRiver and is for providing USB mass storage capability rather than having to use the Microsoft Media Player transfer protocol. And, yes, you can reinstall the original iRiver firmware and get the DRM file capability back. I have previously used an iRiver flash player, ifp 795, and just 2 days ago got the newer version, T30 512 MB flash player. Both have predictable menus which, if you are good at memorizing the features you want, you can use it pretty effectively. I got one of my kids to change the settings I prefer to always stay the same. But, the feature I most enjoy is the playback speed adjustment. It goes from 0% to 50 percent in 10 percent incriments. It is easy to memorize the sequence of buttons. The features I like changed are: Fast forward and rewind speed increased from 1x to 6x. Study mode turned on: this changes the forward and rewind buttons so that tapping it will not change tracks but will move ahead or back a set number of seconds, like 3 or 10 seconds. Auto power shut off time increased to a longer time period. Re: Is there such a thing as a blind friendly playerthatplaysbothRAXand Wma/drm files?
Just adding a small point of clarification so we aren't mixing apples and oranges. The Muvo Mix is definitely the most accessible of the Creative players since it has no screen. It is also the most limited and I don't know if it plays any protected formats. The Muvo TX is a different model series and has a screen. This infers to me that it is more advanced and has more features. I see in its features list that it has voice recording and folder navigation. I seem to recall that others on this list do use it. RE: Is there such a thing as a blind friendly player thatplays bothRAXand Wma/drm files?
Rick, I do not use any DRM files so won't be able to comment on this. However, when I next off-load some files I will locate a very large MP3 file and see how it works with the resume feature. How large of an MP3 file do you recommend using for this test? Other than the resume feature, there is no bookmarking feature I am aware of. By the way, I immediately replaced the original firmware which required Windows Media Player transfer protocol, with iRiver's USB mass storage capable firmware. That removes any capability of loading DRM files. I'll post on the above in a few days. I have previously used an iRiver flash player, ifp 795, and just 2 days ago got the newer version, T30 512 MB flash player. Both have predictable menus which, if you are good at memorizing the features you want, you can use it pretty effectively. Re: MP3 player with bookmark capability
Hi, Ron, It's not clear to me if you want a player capable of playing CDs with MP3 files on them or are you copying the MP3 files off the CD and loading them on a MP3 player? If you are playing the MP3 CDs on a CD player, then I recall the Sony CD players have a dependable resume feature. I have no experience with them for the last couple years but at that time they were coming out with more models that could play MP3 files on a CD. You've already received some info on MP3 players. In my experience, I really like the iriver IFP-700 and 800 series of flash based players. They have an exact book mark feature for where you leave off, even when the battery dies. My only gripe with the 2 IFP 795 models I've owned is that switches in the joystick control have failed in 7 to 9 months. Dont know how common that experience is with others. If you want to do all you asked about then the PTR-2 plus its included Plextalk Recording Software will do it all. But, if you only want to turn MP3 files into a Daisy playback structure then something like eClipse Writer software will do it for much less. MP3 DirectCut is a simple audio editting program allowing MP3 editting without first decompressing to WAV. It is pretty friendly for screen readers. Features include: normalizing cut sections simple fades in and out saving section to a new file Recording MP3 files An older version, 1.39 allowed joining of 2 MP3 files. Flash audio player recommendation and increased playback speed
Hello, everyone, I need a couple recommendations: First for a flash memory, audio/MP3 player, and second, how to increase playback speed of MP3 files. First, I have been using an iRiver ifP-795 flash player for over a year. Twice now the switches in the joystick control have failed. Otherwise, I really like this player, especially the built-in feature of speeding up playback by as much as 25 percent. But, I'm looking for another, more dependable flash player which has one half or a full GB capacity. I doubt any other manufacturers have the increased playback feature. Any recommendations for a dependable player with easy use without vision? Don't necessarily need FM radio or recording features. Second, instead of a built-in feature for increasing playback speed, is their a simple way to modify an MP3 file so it plays back faster prior to loading it into a flash player? I know I'm asking a lot here. Thanks. I have a question to piggy-back onto this thread. I already have an iRiver iFP 795 which I really like. However, I would like a second and simpler and inexpensive flash-based MP3 player. Re: MP3 Direct Cut
Hi, Andrea, Here are my personal notes I wrote up when I was first using MP3 Direct Cut. They may be helpful to you and others. Jeff MP3 Direct Cut Operating Notes Page Up to move back or page down to go forward in fairly large time increments. 1 and 2 will adjust begin point B. 3 and 4 will adjust end point N. This should open up a dialog box like a Windows explorer window to allow selection of the file to append your open file to. To delete an audio selection just press Delete. To save the newly shortened file, use Save All in File Menu. To save an audio selection open File Menu and select save selection, Ctrl E. To jump to a specific time in an open file: Use Ctrl P to open edit field. The edit field shows total time and current NOW time. Merely move with right arrow key to type desired time in the NOW location; press Enter. Now press space bar to begin playback. Unattended recording of audio stream for Dennis Prager
Hello, list, I would like to obtain Dennis Prager's daily radio show as an MP3 file. I used to subscribe to a service for it but it has been discontinued. So, short of someone else recording sending it to me, what would be the easiest way of recording it as it is streamed from a radio station's website? I use XP pro and a single sound card for Window-Eyes speech synthesis using Eloquence. Of course, I don't want any speech to get included with the stream. I suppose there is software to record streaming audio. Can it be automated to come up and start at a specified time and record from a specified URL? Or, must I get the stream going and then start recording? Thanks for any advice. Making a play list
I would like to know how to set up play lists for MP3 files I have on my hard drive. I use Windows XP pro and Real Player although I would be willing to use Windows Media Player. I presume I could use some feature in Real Player but I don't set up my MP3 files in the Real Player library. Is there a way outside of Real Player to do this? Thanks. Re: color identifier
I have spent a little time with the Voice-It-All and Color Teller. The Voice It All is very basic in the types of colors it announces. If that is all you want along with a money identifier then it is acceptable. The voice recorder is so basic I found it to be nearly worthless. The Color Teller is quite a bit more detailed in its color identification. Also, the case is designed far better. Still, with almost any color identifier there are more shades of colors than can be easily described. Re: Two Iriver players
Hi, bobcat, After doing quite a bit of research, I just today purchased the iRiver iFP-795 which is identical to the iFP-790 except for the memory being 512 MB. I talked with an iRiver tech who said he had spoken to a number of blind users using the iFP-700 series. He also said that the latest firmware, version 1.25 now includes adjustment of playback speed. I also particularly wanted the ability to record direct from the FM tuner which the 700 series has. I completely reviewed the user manual for the 700 series and found it to be particularly unhelpful. I expect to get a lot of initial help from my son when I first start using it. I am trusting the operation and menus are predictably accessed and can be mostly used without sight. Check with me in a couple weeks or more to see what I have learned first hand. Jeff At 03:02 PM 4/30/05, you wrote: I've heard on this list that the Iriver IFP-790 is easy for VIPs to use. I see they also have a model called the IFP-190. I wonder if it is as good and or easy to use. It is currently being heavily discounted at www.futureshop.ca I just reviews the messages refering to the IFP-799 and now wonder just how frustrating it might be. Perhaps I should look around for one of the NextWay players instead. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MP3 flash player recommendations
Hi, Listers, I haven't been on the list for a while so don't know if this subject has been recently covered. I am looking for a portable flash MP3 player that is relatively accessible. I would like it to have a simple way to copy files such as the MuVo or at least accessible software. Also having an accessible FM tuner with capability to record from radio and voice recording features would be nice. I would like to hear any and all recommendations for good models or ones to stay away from. I have come across these models which seem particularly feature-rich at under $100: Creative TravelSound TS350W with built in speakers. The SanDisk SDMX1512A18 with 512 MB FLASH and FM tuner and recorder. IRIVER IFP-790T with 256 MB flash and FM tuner and voice recorder J WIN JXMP129FM with 128 MB flash and FM tuner and voice recorder. Thanks for sharing your experience expertise. Re: MP3 flash player recommendations
Thanks, yes, I am aware of RockBox but isn't that solely for hard drive based players? I'm specifically intersted in lower-priced flash players. Any further recommendations from anyone? Re: MP3 flash player recommendations
Let me try to clarify. If I understand MP3 players, there are two basic types of storage: one uses flash memory with no moving parts; the other uses a hard drive which spins just like a computer hard drive and holds greater amounts of storage. I thought the Archos players were of the second type. They may well have flash memory for holding the operating system but audio file storage is on the spinning drive. I am interested in the first type with storage in flash memory. Does this type of player still utilize the Rock Box software? And, I would still like any and all recommendations on what flash based players are more accessible. Thanks. Jeff At 04:46 PM 4/19/05, you wrote: You can flash Rockbox. I'm not sure what your asking.
