Someone Elses Thoughts On Reaper

2015-04-04 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

I've been using the excellent Reaper software for quite some time and
have written about my experiences with the software to this list.

Now here's some more views from another user, I'm forwarding this from
another list with the users permission.

snip
Oh my God! it's so funny you'd mention that about Reaper. I just!
literally! just! like not even 3 minutes, literally! ago wrote the
Reapers Without Peapers e-mail list to let them know that I tried Reaper
just now on the Mac, and oh?... my... God! Ab, suh, lootly? beautiful!
I honestly on the mac side didn't have very high hopes, however, it is
simply put in one word: Gorgeous! I don't think even one single
element wasn't correctly labeled. Even the track strips themselves and
all of the settings within them are totally! accessibly adjustable.
Needless to say, though I still intend to use ProTools primarily, and
not Reaper for now, I have bought Reaper and now have it both on my mac,
and my Windows machine and am incredibly impressed on both sides of the
fence. I'd highly highly recommend you all try it out! There is a 60
day trial, so it's not like you have to buy it right now today. Then,
after that, it's only $60! Considerring it's a full fledged DAW, and
yes, it does do midi, though I haven't yet worked out exactly how, in
comparison to Logic X, or ProTools, this is an absolutely brilliant!
solution. No ILok or anything stupid like that either. Just a simple
key that gets e-mail to you. You either can copy and paste it, or, they
even attach a file to an e-mail for you which you can browse for, and
import which automatically will unlock it for you.

I'm simply over here now salivating!

RE: Audacity Versus Reaper for Multitrack Recording

2013-11-28 Thread David Bailes
Hi Ted,
concerning the latency in Audacity.
There is a setting for a latency correction in audacity. In the preferences
dialog, in the recording category, there's a latency correction edit box. The
default value of the correction is -130ms, and the more negative the value, the
larger the correction.
There are a couple of ways of adjusting this value so that tracks line up
correctly.
1. The first is just to use trial and error. You don't need to get it more
accurate than about 10ms.
2. The second is to use a method such as the one described in a guide to
audacity for jaws users, which is available at:
http://goo.gl/Qi2CeD
In the recording section of this guide, there's a sub section on latency
correction.

In addition to these two methods, I'm aware that someone is working on a
plug-in to partly automate the measurement of the latency, but I'm not sure
when this will be available,

David.

original message:
Personally, I could not get tracks to sync up together so that they sounded
correctly like they would in sonar or reaper. If someone could tell me how
to make tracks line up the way they are supposed to, I would give it a try
again.

For example, while recording vocals, my second harmony part would not stay
with the first, and I did not know how to make it line up.

That is my two cents worth.

Hi,

What you can't do is manage some of the plugin controls and much more.
Take a look at the rea access list.

At 23:01 26/11/2013, you wrote:
I just use my Screen Reader and the mouse or We Cursor, I can get to
all the tracks and menus from there though I do find it convenient
to name tracks as soon as I put them down so I don't get confused.

say that if you're thinking of Reaper interms of a sound editor or

Re: Audacity Versus Reaper for Multitrack Recording

2013-11-26 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I'm a regular user of Reaper though I haven't played all that much with
Audacity so I'm not going to try and compare them but I will say that if you're
thinking of Reaper interms of a sound editor or anything like Audacity then it
would be best if you put that out of your mind, Reaper looks entirely different
and - for multi track recording and mastering - offers far more than Audacity
does, two different pieces of software to do two completely different things.

Try Reaper for yourself and see what you think.

There are plenty of excellent guides and tutorials available on the Reaper web
site, some are free of charge whilst others will cost a little.

RE: Audacity Versus Reaper for Multitrack Recording

2013-11-26 Thread Ted Phillips
Personally, I could not get tracks to sync up together so that they sounded
correctly like they would in sonar or reaper. If someone could tell me how
to make tracks line up the way they are supposed to, I would give it a try
again.

For example, while recording vocals, my second harmony part would not stay
with the first, and I did not know how to make it line up.

That is my two cents worth.

Don't know where you got that from, Reaper supports all platforms and I'm using

Why should you pay? Well you don't have to if you don't want the product and

Now for those who are considering the purchase of Reaper - when I purchased a

You keep writing that Reaper and Audacity are totally different programmes.
Where are the differences? I've been using sound forge 7 for ages does that
cover the features of the other two programmes?

 Thanks and take care

Don't know where you got that from, Reaper supports all platforms and I'm
using it here on Mac and under Windows.

Why should you pay? Well you don't have to if you don't want the product
and that's entirely up to you but comparing Audacity to Reaper is like
comparing Apples to Oranges as they're totally different.

Now for those who are considering the purchase of Reaper - when I
purchased a licence - it was $50.00 and that licence covered multi
 platforms.

There's no difference in features between 32 and 64 Bit, only
difference is for the plug-ins you can add on.

 Hi!

I'm a regular user of Reaper though I haven't played all that much
with Audacity so I'm not going to try and compare them but I will
say that if you're thinking of Reaper interms of a sound editor or
anything like Audacity then it would be best if you put that out of
your mind, Reaper looks entirely different and - for multi track
recording and mastering - offers far more than Audacity does, two
different pieces of software to do two completely different things.

Try Reaper for yourself and see what you think.

There are plenty of excellent guides and tutorials available on the
Reaper web site, some are free of charge whilst others will cost a
 little.

rout your mouse curser, and then what key do you use next? I'm just getting

Audacity Versus Reaper for Multitrack Recording

2013-11-25 Thread Rich De Steno
I have successfully used Audacity for multitrack recording of songs,
using guitars, a keyboard, and a drum machine. I have heard and read
very favorable comments about another multitracker called Reaper. I
would like to hear opinions from anyone who has used both, as to which
is better and why, considering accessibility, of course.

Hello Samuel and list.

In partial answer to your question there is a sound editor called Reaper
which has several free VST (virtual instruments and effects) plugins
available for download, convolution reverb being one of them. I will
forewarn you, however, that Reaper is very sophisticated with a boatload
of

features and audio effects and has a rather steep learning curve. If you
want to produce convolution reverb without using an audio editing package,
I

have no other solutions to suggest at this time. I wish you the best with
your project.

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows of an accessible programme
that can convert wave files into impulse response files to use with sound

reaper old version?

2012-03-12 Thread Joe Paton

Hi list,

By chance, does anybody have version 3.7 or there abouts of
reaper? It certainly is not available from the web site as far as I
can establish.

My understanding is that this works considerably better with the REA
screen reader plug in which rumour has it, is not being further
developed to work with version 4.x. Rather the developer appears to
have disappeared if that makes sense. Maybe another enthusiast will
pick it up, got to be some dollars in it.

Thanks for reading.

Re: reaper old version?

2012-03-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I've ben using Reaper for over a year and went from version 3.7 to the now
available 4.16x and have noticed no accessibility issues, works well with my
Screen Reader.

Having said that I don't use each and every tool or function Reaper has to
offer but I do know that these upgrades and updates are more bug fixes,
performance enhancements and feature additions so its unlikely! that any
deliberate attempt would be made to make future versions less accessible than
older one's.

If there is of course a known problem with accessibility then it should be
brought to the attentions of the developers who have been absolutely superb in
making Reaper accessible as compared to what it once was very early on.

Reaper Audio Production software

2011-11-23 Thread Dane trethowan

Hi!

I think it was in January this year when I first became aware of Reaper
Audio Production software and i asked the list about it.

Since that time Reaper has undergone several upgrades and I've finally
had time to have a good play with the software.

In my opinion this is the best audio Production software I've ever come
across, I've not tried it for editing yet but I've certainly tried multi
track recording and manipulation.

I don't think I'll be doing any Midi work for a while but when i start?
Well I won't have to look too far within the software to find everything
I need.

Reaper is another one of those pieces of software which will be going
into the Bargain Basement Price Basket, one can buy a non-commercial
discounted licence for reaper for $60.00 and this includes all upgrades
and updates until the next major release - in this case we're up to
reaper 4.13 now so the Licence will cover you up until Reaper 5.10 so
you'll get quite a few free upgrades into the bargain. -

I've not done much with Reaper yet on the Windows PC but I've used it
quite extensively on the Mac with no major accessibility issues to
report thus far.

I would suggest that if anyone is thinking of trying Reaper then they
ought to download the Reaper User Guide but be warned, the manual is
huge at 19MB in size.

There's a lot of stuff in this publication and you'll soon be following
along or skipping sections easily to find exactly what it is you need to
know.

I see you're using Eudora. There must be a way of making it do a

with the browser.

Could it also be that if you've installed ITunes, the default behaviour of

the time to get in there and get your voice heard as it develops,

In regards to your query about documentation, a lot of the Reaper manual

of the procedures to accomplish the basics are slightly different. That

on how you can join a mailing list specifically to talk about the use of

Tip for emailing links was Reaper Multi Track recorder

2011-04-20 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay, to avoid problems with email clients breaking links in the future,
put a less than sign before the link and a greater than sign after
it, that way should the email software break the link then you can
easily put it back together, also helps if link is on a blank line.

clicking mp3 links was: Reaper Multi Track recording software

2011-04-20 Thread Robert Logue
I think when you click on a link to an mp3 file like that one, that IE tries
to open the file but downloads it in the background instead. When I click
it, I get what appears to be a blank page. I am guessing that if I wait
long enough, the mp3 will load in to my player, which is Windows Media
Player. Somehow, I think having several different media players messes up
the IE settings on weather you get a prompt to download the file. This has
been happening to me more often recently. I've had trouble listening to mp3
files linked to on web pages as well. I end up right clicking and save as.

Thanks, Dane and James; I finally got the chat downloaded, but had to
utilize the last link that James sent me and my mouse buttons, right mouse
button then arrow down to save target, etc.! Finally got it; the chat
started up playing, BTW, before the download completed, which I only
usually
hear, when downloading one of Mosen's Mushroom podcasts, I am afraid.
This

one started playing at about 65% of the download -- imagine that! I will
peruse this puppy for awhile; sounds like a great alternative to Sonar!

Thanks, both of you!

It is extremely accessible when used with the ReaAccess plug-in - a

Re: Reaper Multi Track recording software

2011-04-19 Thread James Scholes

I just clicked the link here and it works fine, but if you go to

http://www.cucat.org/class_notes/Thursday%20chats/2011/

the Reaper tutorial/introduction is the last one on that page and is
called 20110408 Intro To Reaper.mp3.

In regards to your query about documentation, a lot of the Reaper manual
is useless for blind beginners as ReaAccess (the plug-in I mentioned
earlier) changes many of the hotkeys and when using a screen reader many
of the procedures to accomplish the basics are slightly different. That
audio file should hopefully get you up and running, however if it does
not, the ReaAccess website (http://www.reaaccess.com) features details
on how you can join a mailing list specifically to talk about the use of
Reaper with screen readers. I'm sure people will be happy to help you
on there.

I'm sure people will be happy to help you
on there.

I haven't listened to this, however this intro to Reaper was posted to
Twitter last week - it's over 100MB in size, so I am assuming it's
comprehensive. I know that the people that were involved in putting
this together are Reaper power users.:

Hi, I'am a blind user, and I'am learninng how to use reaper. I produce radio
and video spots, and in these 5 years of work I've ever used Sound forge,
that
isn't a multitrack editor, so has some limitations for my work.
On this list I've discovered that Reaper can become very accessible by using
Rea Access, a tird parti plug-in that talks to my screen reader and allows
movements between
tracks, faders, triggers ecc. I've learned how to select, cut, paste, but I
can't understand volumes. Often, for my work I have 2 or 3 tracks, one for
the background music and the others for voices or effects. So I need to put
down the volume of the background music and re incrementing the same volume
when the voice track is finished. How I can do this with Reaper via keyboard
commands?

I've assigned a shortcut for inserting envelope points, but then I can't
understand what I have to do. I don't want to use automation if possible
because
I don't have a midi controller, and automating volumes via keyboard can't be
easy, especially if I want to create a gradual shape.

Anyone can suggest a solution?

Thanks!

Hello, since I've not heard of this piece of software before, could you

Reaper is actually a digital audio workstation (DAW), meaning you can

Reaper is fairly accessible. The good news is even if you can't afford it
the shareware won't truly expire; it will display a nag screen that you
can't dismiss for a few seconds. The screen will appear once daily until
you've registered.

Well, you can customize the keyboard shortcuts by pressing ? (shift+/). You
can then search for the action you want to perform, such as arm track for
recording then add a keystroke. After that you can press that keystroke to
arm the track for recording. You can then press CTRL+R to start recording.
