Flash questions
Did anybody try or used Vivitar 730AF flash for Pentax? The spec claims lots of features for very little money, but is unclear regarding Pentax model. Also, it seems to have 1/16 power mode. I tried to figure out, how this can be used? It looks like many f-stops (4?) below the meter reading, so it can hardly be used for fill-flash. Or am I wrong? In general, how important are these power settings (1/2, 1/4, ) on high-end flashes? Could they be used for flash exposure compensation, or they have diferent purpose? From: Mat Maessen Subject: Re: Pentax 35-80 smcp-a f4-5.6 lens For a school camera, I would definitely push him towards a 50mm prime lens over the 35-80 zoom. I have this 35-80, as well as a couple of prime lences (A-series 50mm f1.7, and an M-series 50mm f2.0), and the primes are MUCH more versatile. You get a minimum of two stops more light w/ the prime lens. I second Mat. Ayash. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Thanks Alex adjustable power manual flash is very useful for adjusting the ambient/fill ratio when doing daylight fill flash. For example if you want a 1:1 ratio, choose a fstop/shutter speed for ambient light and then adjust flash power manually until it gives correct exposure with the fstop already in use. also allows extreme closeup work while keeping the f-stop managable with fast film. third less used feature is the very low power setting allows shortest possible flash duration which is desireable if your trying to freeze extremely fast action of some sort. Sorry Lukasz - I misread the spelling :-) Yes, it is his first SLR, and a 'serious' camera. You are absolutely right. RE: M50/1.4 fungus remedies?
Kristian, It depends where the fungus is, and how much damage is done. If fungus is on the front element, it can be removed with a partial disassembly. I had a lens cleaned by a pro, and results are great. Hi, Firstly, thanks to all for the tips on the Leica. It turned out to have a messed up shutter (1sec varied between 1 and 2 seconds, and above 125 the shutter didn't fully open). I'm waiting for a quote on a CLA before I put my cash into it. Oh, and the lens had fungus. Speaking of which, the shop had a lovely M50/1.4 (or maybe a K -- don't know how to tell them apart, but it wasn't an A. Minimum focus was 0.48m, and there were 8 aperture blades - the casing felt like plastic over metal). I had a quick try on their MZ-5n body and I was very impressed. I know these questions come up occasionally, so here are some answers to look up in future: - Auto-focus confirmation works (!!) - I was surprised at this, but I suppose there's no reason why it wouldn't. - The metering seems to work fine. I couldn't be entirely sure, but I think spot and centre-weighted metering both work. - The focus feel is fantastic ;-) ... so, why don't I have a nice 50/1.4 now? Well, it had not one but two tiny fungal colonies. Does anyone know how to get rid of these, or is the lens doomed forever? -- Kristian PS. The shop had actually received, and sold, a Contax N Digital, so there must me some around somewhere. Price was 9500, but I think that was with two zoom lenses. Can you imagine Pentax trying to get that kind of money for a body? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Hi, gang. I just wanted to share my happiness. Some days ago I sold my LX. I rarely used it lately (since I was stolen last year I never took it out from my home, and was using my ME Super instead). So, since my economic situation is unstable now (90% possibilities of becoming unemployed next month), and it was collecting dust, I decided to transform it in green cash, to have just in case. But it's not so easy to save money when a great opportunity arises. In a local ebay page, a guy was selling a 6x7 for half of what it costs normally (BIN of 550 usd, and it costs from 1000 to 1500 in used stores). I was hard tempted, and in case I needed the money in a future, it's a pro camera with very good reputation and possibilities of sale. The risk was a bit high since he was in Chaco province, 1000 km away from Buenos Aires (Argentina is huge), so, in case the camera not worked, or he sent a brick in a box, it would be very difficult to me to recover my money (a little fortune in my situation). He has good feedback and I was hyper-enabled, so I decided to take the risk. The transaction went smooth, I talked to him and he told me the camera was as new, and he was not using it since there wasn't any lab in the whole province developing 120 film in the last couple of years. He accepted to share shipping cost with me, and this Monday I received a huge box. I opened it, and inside was a beautifull, cute leather hardcase with Asahi Pentax engraved on it. I was flying. Opened it, and there it was, an absolutely mint 6x7 body, non MLU, with metering prsim, a SMC Takumar 105 2.4 in like new condition, strap and all the original caps (including the lens with Aoc logo engraved) , and even the metal tool to actrivate the shutter without film. It feels gorgeous in the hands. The weight distributes very well thru the big body and lens, so it doesn't feels so heavy. I was expecting it to feel far heavier. The quality and feel is superb. The noise of mirror is cool and not so loud as I imagined. It included an expired roll so I tried the film advance, and seems to work. I'll take a roll this weekend to see if everithing is ok. I'm super happy. This camera is DA BOMB, man, is a real beauty. The MLU issue doesn't bothers me too much, since I don't plan to use any tele in the future, and I'll try to avoid the problematic slow speeds, and use my heavy Manfrotto always I can. There's a small issue with the prism. To be honest, I'll use my Gossen Lunapro with this camera, but to have the prism metering could be handy. The problem is the finder rattles a bit in its place, it's just a bit loose, and it prevents the contact between the current pins in body and prism. If I press the finder against the body, it works, but if I leave it, it looses contact. The distance is very very minimal. Any suggestion on how to fix it? As I said, I'll almost never use it, but I would like it to work. Flying some inches from the floor. Albano - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. ??? on SMC M 120/2.8 and street candids
Hi all, I am looking for a compact medium tele whose main use would be available light street photography and candid portraits. From looking at tech info and user comments the best (perfect?) canidate I can find in the Pentax line up is the M120/2.8. The only problem is I can't seem to find one for sale. I also fear that when I do it will be priced out of my range due to rarity. I'm wondering first off if some of you who have used this lens would agree that it is right for the job. If so, what would be a fair price for one in good optical/mechanical condition? And finally, can anyone suggest an alternative lens, maybe a 3rd party? What appeals to me is the small size and weight for the focal length and speed of the lens. It would see a lot of use on a MX at wide aperatures. I currently have a zoom and a macro prime covering the focal range, neither of which meets both my size and my speed criteria. Re: On how I officially entered to The Brotherhood (a bit long)
Thanks Bill and Bruce. The rattle is not to the sides, but up-down. And the difference is very subtle, but enough for don't allow the prism to work ok. I'll try the suggestion to clean the contacts, but to me the issue is due to this slight loose. If I keep the prism firmly against the body with my hand's pressure, it works, but as soon as I leave it, it switchs off. And the prism is well fitted, I hear the clicks, and I can't take it off, but for some reason it's this way. I don't know. If you don't mind losing about half a stop, you could get a M 135mm f/3.5 - this lens is plentifull (and therefore easy to find), cheap( you could get one in very good condition for as little as $60-70), but very good (at least I like it). It's also very compact and light (weights the same as the 120, and is just a bit longer - 3mm of difference I think). Hope this helps, Lukasz - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: sticky aperture ring - a-50/1.7
It's the A button on the aperture ring. It is held back by two leaf springs. These are poorly secured to the plastic lens body and come loose. They prevent you from moving the aperture ring all the way to A. If you are careful, you can take the aperture ring off and glue the leaf springs down with super glue. The only tricky part is doing it slowly and not looseing the tiny ball bearing that makes the f stops go click. But you should be handy with small parts and have patience. Regards, Bob S. I occasionally noticed dust in the finder of my MZ-5n, and once mentioned it while I was at Pentax Canada to buy a filter or something. The parts manager called the head technician, who took away the camera and returned it within five minutes with the focusing screen cleaned. He said I shouldn't try it at home, but it's probably not that complicated. As for the MZ-S, I haven't seen any dust in it yet, and anyway, the focusing screen is user-removable, so I'm not worried about it. Pat White - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: what is a good 20mm
Chris Stoddart wrote about the Mir 47-K 20 mm. 2.5: 1. The filters go on the back, you get three supplied with it. I have had differing reports as to whether one has to be fitted permanently (i.e. part of the optical formula). One guy I have spoken to swears that the factory technicians told him they do, however my mate down the corridor at work has read the manual for me (he's Russian) and it apparently says nothing about this. Also the optical diagram in the manual doesn't include the filter. This is fairly crucial because I can tell you my experience about this lens: I wrote a message to the list some months ago, then I said the filters where not necessary for infinite focus, and this is what it seems to me after some months using this lens. BUT, they are needed to correct some colour fringing at the edges of the image, or better said, if you don't use a filter, for example the clear UV one, you will see such colour fringing at the corners of the negatives or slides, this is gone when you fit the filters. So it seems that the filter is an important part in the optical dormula of the lens. Then, I can't use the lens in the small Pentaxes I have (MZ-S, MZ-5 and MX) because it interferes with the movement of the mirror when it swings back to its start position, as Chris said. It doesn't happen with my Z-1 or SFX bodies. -- Carlos Royo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Zaragoza (Aragon) - Spain -- - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. There are several similar design lenses from Pentax (all 5 elements in similar arrangement). SMC PENTAX-M 135/3.5 is also very compact and sharp with afordable price. They are everywhere. The M120/2.8 is much more expensive than they should be now, I don't see the point to pay USD300 for one unless you really want it for some reason. I too had this problem occur with one of my lenses, the little metal leaf springs have a hole at their bases and that are held in place by a plastic spike on the aperture that has been melted. This joint fractures and then there is no material left to allow it to be re-attached. What I did to repair mine was to clean all the lubricant from the area with spirits. And then use a slow setting epoxy glue to re-attach the spring making sure that no glue fouled the rotating parts of the mechanism. I'd stay away from cyanoacrylates (ie Super Glue®) as it can foul surfaces whilst curing. Re: ??? on SMC M 120/2.8 and street candids
Hi Steven... Yes, the comments regarding the A 135/2.8 are generally negative. Despite those, I picked one up to see for myself. The lens produced nice 5x7 prints at mid apertures (using Fuji Reala), but I'm sure larger prints would've revealed its weaknesses. It's very inexpensive on eBay, between $50 and $75 for ones in good condition. I sold it because I didn't feel that it could outperform my SMC-A 70-210/4 and was cluttering my bag. I'll wait for a outrageous bargain on an 135/1.8. AFAIK, the k-mount Takumar has uncoated optics and a generally poor build quality. The M 135/3.5 would probably be a good choice. t On 7/31/02 1:51 PM, steven gilson wrote: Thanks for the suggestion, Lukasz. If I can't track down a M 120/2.8 at a reasonable price I will probably go for either a SMC-M 100/2.8 or 135/3.5. Can somebody tell me about these lenses when used wide open or close to it? I'm mainly interested in their performance when focused from 15 feet and farther. I really would like something a little longer than 100mm as I already have a macro in that length and a 35-105/3.5 zoom. I know nobody likes the SMC-A 135/2.8 or the Tak-A 135/2.5, but the faster SMC 135s are too $$$ and really bigger than what I want. Was there a Ricoh or Vivitar S1 135/2.8 (non-macro)? Two flash related issues #1: Sunpak-Pentax 645 compatibility
Hi everybody, I had decided to write a single mail about my flash adentures of the last month, but it seems they would come out too long so I cut the message in two. First, the Sunpak-Pentax 645 problem: I don't know if anybody has ever experienced this: I own a couple of Sunpak G4500DX flashes with TTL cords for Pentax cameras (the non-af version). One of my cousins asked me to take his marriage pictures and I decided to use one of those flashes with one of my two 645. It was the first time that I was using the Sunpak - TTL cord - 645 combo (usually I have a AF280T on the hotshoe and/or a Sunpak connected via pc cord). Needless to say, the TTL Sunpak cord works nicely with every otyher camera I own but... After the first couple of shots, I noticed that the flash was discharging all the power after each shot. The green light blinked, so I thought that *maybe* the dark suit of the groom was eating most of the light. I was shooting at f/4 with a 400 Iso film, though, so the output should have been enough. Unfortunately I've lost a couple of important moments because the flash was very slow in recharging (and I was too stupid to shot those moments with the MZ-5n I had ready around my neck...). Back home (luckily, the ceremony in the church was at noon and the party in the evening) I tested in every way the two flashes, the two TTL cords and the two cameras in various combinations. Results: odd but true, the 645 pilots the flash in the right way... until the shutter is closed. Then the flash fires again, this time at full output. This is evident when the shutter speed is slow enough. Another lesson learned... Gianfranco = Yahoo! Re: ??? on SMC M 120/2.8 and street candids
It's a little longer and slower, but the M135/3.5 is quite small, inexpensive and common. Also, it is quite sharp, even wide open. RE: Beeping - was: MZ-S gripe and Oly pics from the weekend
Raimo, It is only listed in the Function section, in the English manual. For F1 in enabling the audible PCV signal it states that the beeps are for focus confirmation, errors, or film count reaching 30. I turn this function off because I dont like the focus confirmation. I would like the warning for film use. Actually I would like to have the film counter in the viewfinder. My Nikon F3 has it. This weekend I will be taking finish line photos at a triathlon. I have to always look at the counter to be ready for a camera change and therefore a film roll change. This alerts me if I have to change from the MZ-S to the ZX-5 and vice-versa. Did Pentax ever make a camera with a film counter in the viewfinder? Interesting if they didnt. More Limited lenses in the bag.
I finally got around to getting the 31 f1.8 Limited lens yesterday. I got it locally. I had used the lens on two separate occasions due to the magnanimous nature of my Pentax rep. I consider myself fortunate to have a rep to call my own :-) Now I have a 31 that is mine. Tomorrow night there is a free outdoor concert in an oak ladened park here. It only lasts an hour. I think I will take an LX with ASA 400 bw and another with ASA 400 color slide film. The lens collection will be the 31-1.8, 50-1.2, and the 77-1.8. No flash required! Re: Two flash related issues #1: Sunpak-Pentax 645 compatibility
I used a Sunpak model with the Pentax module on my LX. Unfortunately, it did not give me TTL confirmation with the blinking diode in the viewfinder. I just use a Pentax 280T with the special synch cord on the LX to get TTL and the blinking diode in my LX. Now, with my Pentax 645, I use the 400 T and that special synch cord to get TTL with the 645. I like the way the camera adjusts flash output with ambient light in a church or hall when I shoot weddings with it. Jim A. I'll try the cleaning and let you know Hi, Brother Albano: I just popped the prism off my 6x7. Mine has significant up and down play in the mounting, and can be pushed down 2 or 3 millimeters from its resting position. I believe this is normal, as my camera was like this from the get go. The electrical contacts are on the back of the prism, more or less under the eyepiece. The protrude perhaps 3mm (I don't have a micrometer), and are held out by fairly strong springs. I suspect you are right, and your metering problem is the mechanical contact between prism and body. Here is what I would try: First, clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. The prism contacts appear to be less prone to oxidization than the body contacts. Also, check and make sure that the spring loaded prism contacts are in fact actively sprung. Not knowing the internal construction of the contacts, it is possible that the cotact point is a sliding mechanical contact rather than a hard soldered contact. I would exercise the contacts a bit by pressing them flat to the housing and releasing them, on the off chance that they might be cleanable by this method. You can see the contact pins with the prism mounted, so you should be able to tell if they are making contact or not. Re: sticky aperture ring - a-50/1.7
- Original Message - From: Peter Spiro Subject: Re: sticky aperture ring - a-50/1.7 My advice would be to leave it alone. The cost of the repair to have it done professionally is more than the value of the lens. I would strongly advise against trying to do it yourself. The parts under A and F lens aperture rings are so tiny, and so hard to put back, that it is very likely to end up worse than how you started -- I speak from experience. I tried to repair a sticky aperture ring on an A 50mm f/1.7, after reading Alan Chan's very lucid description of how to do it. The lens mount is now doing time as a 35mm to view camera adapter, the rest of the lens is now in the City of Regina landfill. I can strip and rebuild a BMW 3.0 liter inline 6, I can balance the carbs on a 12 cylinder E-type Jaguar by ear, and I can diagnose and repair almost any photo lab problem, but those darned A series lenses don't like me at all. LX repair update
My 3rd LX is still in the shop (PCI, Mississauga). They have had it since the middle of May. They have been telling me for the past couple of weeks it would be shipped soon, and last Monday, they told me it would ship on Wednesday. Since I hadn't received it on Monday, I decided to call them, in case the box had perhaps gone astray (it would be an overnight courier shipment). The repair person apologized, and told me it had, in fact, been shipped last Friday. Since it is now Wednesday, and still no LX, I called Pentax again today. After being bounced from parts to shipping, and having them hang up on me a few times I finally connected with the service manager. Through all of this, I actually held my temper and my stupid insulting mouth in check. No sense antagonizing them unnecessarily. I asked him to look into it, and find out what shipper they had used, and to get me a tracking number. He left a message on my answering machine saying that the camera was not yet repaired, and they didn't even have the correct parts yet to complete the job. So, I have now been lied to by the Pentax service department. I have to wonder if their next trick will be to decide they cannot repair the thing at all, and rather than admit they are in violation of Canadian consumer laws, they will just quietly arrange to have the camera get lost in shipping. Needless to say, I have to wonder if the Pentax Colorado people from a couple of years back emigrated to Toronto. Anyway, I needed to vent, and for a change, I am on topic.
