Having parted with the money
I just ordered my copy of LR from our local Adobe reseller. Just out of curiosity, I am asked about how much time of support do I get. The answer was 3 months, but we're there later on, said the representative. Is that the same in your country? It should arrive tomorrow to my office in Tel Aviv... By the way I was asked to delete whatever I have now on my computer and re-install it from the disk that they will give to me... Peculiar, me thinks. Re: Velvet Fine Art on the R2400?
Hi Godders, I'm still on 10.3.9. Can't get the system software to install. I'm going to call that support number you gave me today. In addition to Premium Presentation Matte and Presentation Matte I see Ultra Premium Presentation Matte. I might assume that was a pseudonym for Velvet Fine Art, except I also see VFA greyed out. However, my prints look very good, but I'd certainly like to compare them to one made using what seems to be the correct print setting. As I said, I am able to use the correct ICC profile. Velvet Fine Art on the R2400?
I got a question. I tend to use the Ilford papers and the Costco Glossy 95% of the time, but have used others like the Museo. I have seldom had a problem getting a good print, but I always use the settings to make the software set the print requirements, not the printer, other than setting a paper type (not by name but Prem Gloss or enhanced matte, ie, etc). I am using the Epson 220 and 1800 printers and PSE5. My monitor was recently calibrated, but it was so very close to what I had done by eyeball that I can not determoine any difference. My question, or rather a statement, is, if I feel that I like my results, will there be that much difference between now and if I set up some other way using profiles, etc? I personally find it hard to believe that I can get much better prints than I already do. The A is a different optical formula than the M. http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/primes/tele/A200f4.html http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/primes/tele/M200f4.html The M has a slightly better reputation over all for image quality, but that may just be due to a more elements = better design/performance bias I've sometimes noticed. All I'm trying to do is to get the print to end up looking as close as possible to what I see on the screen. At the moment I'm pretty damn close, using Epson papers profiles (I also let PS handle colour management). I think the only thing that I could do to improve the process is to start making my own custom paper profiles. (I got a ColorVision PrintFix profilee with my Spyder but I've never used it.) Re: Velvet Fine Art on the R2400?
If you're getting the print results you want, don't change anything. :-) Using a color managed workflow is a means to obtain production consistency. It is also a means by which you can take files from one system and bring them to another while maintaining color balance fidelity. I was going nuts, once upon a time, trying to make a set of BW exhibition prints that matched properly in tone and tint. And the same went for trying to produce a set of color prints ... the blue sky's tint kept changing as I printed. Once I went to a profiled, color managed processing regimen, all those difficulties disappeared. A week or two back, I decided to do a comparison test between four different papers to see how the surface qualities affected the presentation of the photographs. By using the profiled printing process with known-good print profiles, I was able to print four high quality prints on different papers by simply changing the profile I for the paper I was targeting, no other changes or adjustments necessary, to get a representative picture of how the paper surface affects things. But again, if you are getting the print results you want, there is no reason to change anything. One of the folks I know who does beautiful printing work doesn't even calibrate his monitor ... he knows his computer, his printer and the paper he's using so well that he just eyeballs all the settings and produces a beautiful print every time. Re: Velvet Fine Art on the R2400?
What I've found, after trying three sets of sample profiles made by highly respected color management experts is that the Epson profiles for Epson Enhanced Matte and Epson Velvet Fine Art supplied with the R2400 are about as good as I can get. So I stick with the Epson profiles and don't worry about it. That's not true of the Hahnemühle Fine Art Photo Rag profile supplied by H___, the aftermarket profiles worked better. Since I don't print on this paper very often, I find I get better results going to the Epson driver's controls and tweaking the settings there myself. I don't see a heck of a lot of difference in the print quality between this paper and the Epson VFA, but it does have a slightly smoother surface. Re: PAW 2007 - 07, 08, Soft Lights - GDG (Critique - off list)
Okay, I woke up early and have some time this morning... I operate a small home-based business that I started over two years ago. I am getting into it more and more. It's sort of part-time, but even though it is, it does mean that I am somewhat a working stiff and my time is limited because of it. If I have to choose between it and the PDML, PDML will always come in last. And I have also unsubscribed a great deal over the last three years, because I find sometimes I end up spending my mornings reading/writing to PDML, shot my morning, in other words. So I unsubscribe to not be tempted to shoot my morning, and get some work done when it has piled up. That's number one. Number two is, I no longer get into heavy discussions on the Net. When I first got on line I stupidly thought that if someone misunderstood me I was obligated somehow to clear up the misunderstanding. Or if someone wanted to debate me, somehow I was obligated to get involved. That was many long years ago, but over time I have changed a great deal in my attitude. I have never liked debate, I tend to see it as very much a male thing. He presents his side, I present my side, who ever has presented their side the best, wins. Nope. I will never present my side the best because of my dyslexia. Someone else can always talk (write) rings around me. And does it make ME change my mind?, nope, not usually. So what's the point? The point really is, the debate is for others, not me, to prove to others that I was a big stupid idiot (i.e. the one proving is the other one in the debate). Discussion, yes, it can be different than debate. But there is another factor. To think things through in a very linear manner and write them as clearly as possible takes me time. Sometimes a great deal more time than a more verbally fluent person would realize. So sometimes someone that can dash off a very, very clear and brief reply say in five minutes, would have no idea that to do the same probably would take me half an hour to forty-five minutes or more. This, for instance, I am writing very fast, but I am not trying to be superclear and superbrief. To be brief, I have to edit and edit and edit. So, overall, writing brief and clear, clear, clear is very mentally draining for me -- it takes a lot of time and energy and thought. This is something a non-dyslexic cannot really understand. And it is why I now tend to avoid long Net discussions now. I definitely avoid all debates now. Debates are lose-win situations with absolutely no appeal. That's number two. I will be long when I write fast, and that's the way it is. I guess there is an appendum to the above, the more I disclose the longer I write, if someone wants to debate, the more handle it gives someone. IE the more words there are to react to, the more someone can pounce on things I have written, find holes, etc., etc. Those that really love to debate, that is. So I tend not to write long anymore in newsgroups, mailing lists, etc., either. I don't like giving argumentative people even more to work with. So you may well have wanted a discussion, not a debate, but for the above reasons, nope, I rarely do that anymore either. Discuss with others, not me. :-) Since when I write fast, I write long, not brief, I write fast and long mainly now only in private email. Okey, dokey, now onto the critique. I am a very visual person. Maybe the dyslexia is a factor, shrug, who knows. (Note that I am also an extremely fast reader.) I test out like a man in being high in spatial skills. I started life doing art work and by my twenties thought of myself as an artist. I used to oil paint. But I never did a lot because I also found out by my late twenties that only .001 percentage of fine artists made a living at it. NOT good odds. I changed my college major to computer science. I have done some art work over the intervening years, but not much. I now want to combine photography and art, and moving more and more in that direction. But it will always be a sideline, not something I can do all the time. So I react to things visual in a visual and visceral way. Sometimes I have reactions that I cannot put fully into words, or that I cannot put immediately into words. Also when I look at photographs I tend to come from the artist side of things. The composition, etc. I am still learning photography and because of that and because I still get f/stops confused, I will rarely comment in a technical manner. Like Peter recently showed a beach pic that I thought the clouds looked blown out. But I will hesitate to say that because I am not sure. Not totally positive. http://www.mindspring.com/~morephotos/PESO_--_connzenvi.html Later, someone else did say it. I will tend to say if something looks too dark to me, or oversharpened, but that is about it on the technical side. Mainly I make comments on

Just for info - this was one of 2000 images shot in the park over a 10 day period. We'd leave camp before daylight normally return just after sunset. I've been to the Park 5 times over the years either never had the opportunities or the equipment to capture the images that were captured during this trip. I can't say how close I was to the bear but I know we always observed the Park's rules which IIRC allow no less than 50 yards or 100 yards with cub. The image posted is a slight crop from the original. This particular shot was the result of around a half hour of shooting, waiting for an interesting pose or activity. Not really sure as to the sex of this particular animal. The bear was aware of my presence but took no aggressive action toward us. The shot was actually taken from inside a small school bus. SDM lenses
On the Pentax usa website it is mentioned that the two new weather sealed lenses (smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL[IF]SDM and smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF]SDM) have built-in super sonic focusing motors. But there's no mentioneing of what SDM stands for. This has probably been mentioned or explained earlier on this list, but I failed to read about it. It is also mentioned that teh automatic switch between the two AF systems requires a firmware upgrade for the K10D. Which firmware version might that be? The Pentax website says: These PENTAX-DA* series lenses feature a tightly sealed, weather-resistant and dust-resistant construction to enhance durability for use in rain or dusty conditions making each a perfect companion for the weather-sealed PENTAX K10D digital SLR. The lenses also feature the PENTAX original Quick-Shift Focus System for instant switching to manual-focus operation and PENTAX-original SP (Super Protect) coating to repel dust, water and grease. A new SDM system has been incorporated for smoother, quieter autofocusing operation using a built-in supersonic motor. These lenses feature the PENTAX KAF2 mount, which incorporates additional electrical contacts to drive a built-in supersonic motor used in autofocusing operation. Both models will be featured along with the entire line of PENTAX digital compact and SLR cameras and lenses in Booth G151 at PMA 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada from March 8 – 11, 2007. Seriously, the lens is so frigging expensive that I could not buy the wimberley or kirk head just yet. Re: Another lens story.
William, http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/temp/flare70.html It's not that good a picture... As an aside: The picture in the background was one I shot on my Dad's OM-1 just before I bought my LX. I think your new lens was just envious from seeing a picture made using a competitor hanging on the wall... ;-) Cheers, Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: How about Pentax M 135/3.5 and M 200/4.0?
Jens, I have a M 4/200mm as well. I have tested it against some fine lenses, like the FA* 2.8/80-200mm It's better than I thought it would be: http://jensbladt.dk/Test/images/200mm56-small/0830-PM-200-56.jpg http://jensbladt.dk/Test/images/200mm56-small/1197-PTX-200mm-F56.jpg wow, that's quite a difference, are you sure it wasn't caused by auto focus or something? Re: How about Pentax M 135/3.5 and M 200/4.0?
John, I've not compared the K 200/4 to the M 200/4 despite owning the K. However a couple of years back I tested M 200/4, A 200/4, A 70-210/4 and FA 80-320 (at 200mm)against each other on film, the M 200/4 appeared sharpest with best definition followed by a close call between A 70-210/4 and FA 80-320, both had slighty higher contrast than the the M 200/4 with the FA 80-320 having a slightly warmer rendering but were not quite as sharp. A 200/4 came dead last. I own just the M200/4 and the A70-210/4 and generally I concur with your findings. Nevertheless my sample of M200/4 shows some chromatic aberration on film (haven't tried it on digital yet). Yuriy: Ralf posted a superb picture made using the M200/4 not so long time ago... John, Indeed. And the (current) official release date is May 15th, which just happens to be my birthday! cool, I'm just wondering how they knew it? ;-) Cheers, Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: A cool accesscory
Hi Mike, Tigerdirect.ca has the Transcend 150x 4GB cards that all the folks in the US rave about... (NewEgg.com doesn't ship to Canada, sadly). $66.99 for 4GB of 150x memory? Hell yeah. I could order 3 and have enough memory for 6 months! :) not just in the US. ;-) They are IMHO not true 150x cards and almost certainly are slower than for example SanDisk 133x Extreme III, but price is very good indeed and they are plenty fast for use in my ist-Ds. Re: OT - Happy Birthday to me major enablement
I might try out the sidekick which I hear is good for the 500mm and is half the cost of the gimbal heads. I have the Kirk King Cobra have no issue with it. Check out a recent addition - the Jobo. Looks simple I believe is less costly that the full blown Wimberly Kirk. Now what about the tripod you'll be using.
