RE: OT: Help! Need Myths
Men and women seem to see different things, and use different things as reference points. Men (at least in the UK) say things like 'turn left at the White Lion, carry straight on past the Pig Whistle then it's right in front of you. You can't miss it'. Women say things like 'turn left at Sainsburys, carry straight on past Primark then it's right in front of you. You can't miss it'. It was a man who gave me the most baffling directions I've ever received. It will give me a super-nice pic once and again, other times the pics will be slightly off. Some sligt misfocus (this is with AF, never happens on the 50), or slightly strange contrast, slightly faded colors. I think it's more aperture dependent than anything else, it has to be because my technique doesn't change shot to shot. In my opinion, the 50 can do no wrong, and it rules for marginal lighing. But the 43's pics have a perceptibly different quality to them. I just can't tell if it's Photoshop (there are a gazillion varibles if so) or the lens itself. I suspect it was much the same in the film day. An old photography book I have says you could really change the picture in the darkroom if you knew what you were doing. The whole two eye open thing, I haven't been able to do it with the digitals yet, neither with the 40 or the 50. The only camera that has allowed comfortable two-eye shooting was the Minolta SRT-201. I don't know what vf magnification it had, but it's a big ol' prism. The lens was a small 43mm which should be equal to a 28 on a DSLR. I will be playing with the kit lens in that range for a bit. The Engineering side of me really likes Rob's answer. There are simply too many variables to tell. And it satisfies the cheapskate side of me too I guess I'll be spending a bit more time with my existing gear before taking the plunge. It's the smartest thing to do. Re: OT: Help! Need Myths
Really not. They're still very much en vogue, and often accurate (like most jokes that aren't PC these days) ;) One time, me and some of my brothers were going down to CT for the weekend. One of us brought his girlfriend along. This was a heinous act punishable by a severe beating (chapter trip to another chapter, and someone is bringing his ball chain? Inexcusable! But what could we say at the last minute?) Since he was driving, he expected his girlie to ride shotgun. Well she did. From montreal, all you need to do is catch I-89 southbound, then switch to i-91 when you meet it, and that's basically it. We had printed directions from 2 websites, written directions from the CT chapter, and a big ole map.Since the gal got to ride shotgun, she got to navigate for us. Well, come 1am, we're lost. Turns out the gal decided she wanted to see Brooklyn, and for ~100 miles, never noticed we were going in the opposite direction. We told both of them off and managed to find our way back using only the map, with another set of driver/navigator. Despite her massive screwup that cost us 4 hours and a tank of gas, she still had her high mighty 'tude all weekend and made life miserable for the lot of us, whining about how our jokes were too dirty, how we were drinking too much, how we didn't cook our steaks enough, how we spent too much time swimming and never took her to see the sights, how she didn't like the music we played, etc etc etc. This is a failure by the boyfriend to dictate acceptable behavior. But then, he only acts tough. We should have kicked her out of the van in brooklyn as a decoy and gunned it out. We were being eyed (very bad part of town, it seemed) and we needed to get out of there FAST, but we had to find a way to un-f*** ourselves after the number she did. And we never needed to ask for directions. We got ourselves out of it :) Long story short, she is now persona non grata at any and every event, depite the two of em being engaged. And that's the way I like it. On 5/27/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay, sexist jokes like this went out 15-20 years ago. -- Wanna get in shape? In the end there is always a subjective factor involved in keeping a lens, and that's why it's only you who can decide what works better for you, right? Anyway I would buy that da40 from you if I wouldn't have one already ;-). The way things are shapping up, I'm pretty sure you'll end up buying that 43 and hopefully you'll find the so called 3D effect (comming from a guy that has an order for a 31Ltd on Henry's). Re: Chill Out Surfer #2
I like the second shot better than the first. For me, what makes both of them is the subtle lighting, the coloration of the water. In this respect the first has a slight edge, but both are super. The surfer is a necessary added element, but the water texture and color is what makes them. And that is why on balance I prefer the second - the surfer is less obtrusive in the picture. In the first he fills so much of the frame that the eye is drawn back there and one loses the beauty. As a surfer action shot, the first may be better, as a good looking photo the second is my preference. stan On May 26, 2007, at 4:08 AM, AlunFoto wrote: http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/displayimage.php?album=1pos=6#nav_pic Got this shot of another surfer just before sunset, the same day. OT: This weekend's annual camera sale
I got some goodies this weekend. One was an old H3v, SN 2 (162). (It's on eBay now.) It came with a nice Super Takumar 35/3.5 for a mere $20. Kept the lens (duh). Produces really well on digital. Also picked up 3 K-1000 bodies avg. $30 each, with lenses. Nice condition. There was another set of s/m lenses that I drooled after. SuperMultiCoated 35/2 and 135/2.5. They went for the predictable decent bucks. But the 35/2 buyer has it for sale for $175. Anyone interested? If so I'll pass on his # to you. Darkroom stuff was cheap. I've not been on PDML much this past year. Grad school has been great, but it takes a lot of time to do a good job. Haven't had enough opportunity to go out shooting, film or digital. Sad. Oldest son graduated from college 2 weeks ago. Long drive to Hillsboro, KS. Shot lots of pics, though. Re: Editorial: Pentax missed the boat?
It is said the CCD had low yields and bad reliability, I think Philis eventually discontinued it. They also say the camera was built specifically around that CCD and would have required a lot of reworking to use another. No one really knows though. From wiki: In October 2003, Pentax canceled the camera, stating The cost of manufacturing the prototype SLR 6-megapixel digital camera meant it was not a viable product for our target market.[1] The MZ-D was to use the same 6 megapixel (3072×2048) full 135 film frame sized (24×36 mm) CCD (model FTF3020-C) from Philips that was used by the Contax N Digital. The lack of success of that camera and the image quality problems it displayed suggest to some that Pentax may have had other reasons than cost to cancel the MZ-D project. Re: About to pull the trigger on the FA43 Limited...... Some thoughts?
Hi! Then perhaps you can have both FA 50/1.4 and eventually FA 43/1.9 Ltd like I am planning to do. ;-) Boris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

When i frame up a jump, i have both eyes open, so i can see the horse coming. When i know it is two strides away, i gently shut one of them, your guess:-), and then shoot. I had a hard time at first because I'm very 'right-eye dominant', but I found it a good exercise to strengthen and improve vision in my left eye as well as allowing me to keep track of stuff going on in a scene when I was using a long lens.
