Garbage pix K20D review pancake too

2008-04-14 Thread Tim Bray
Here: http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2008/04/13/K20D

Here's a PDML-only note, not included in the blog:

If you're going to walk around all day with a camera on your wrist you
don't want to be changing lenses, and you really don't want to be
fiddling with the lens-cap when the picture occurs. With Pentax's
40mm pancake prime, the problem goes away; the built-in lens hood
means you're really not going to smudge the lens unless you're really
unlucky (or have a grabby toddler), so stick the awkward little
screw-in cap in your pocket and just forget about it. Well, and that
lens just gets right out of your way. Is there higher praise?

Re: PESO: Snowy Egret

Nice pics, Bob.

I don't think the green cast is a problem. It looks like a reflection
of the foliage, and with the foliage present in the pic, it looks
natural. Maybe just a slight reduction in green saturation will remove
it if you don't like it?

I like the second pic best. Great documentation of the display and how
it use the tail feathers. Even though both birds look away from the
camera, there's more feeling of contact with the bird in the second
than in the first.

Best,
Jostein

The underside of the bird is reflecting the green of the foliage.
That's natural. And to me, it looks natural. However, it can easily

- Original Message -
From: Bob Sullivan
Subject: Re: Faces of meth images

 Mishka,
The legal and police actions against drugs are the result of petty and
not so petty thievery - burglary, robbery, and assaults against the
general population. Don't mistake political rhetoric for root causes.
We are a very tolerant bunch of people - so long as you don't bother
us. I don't care if the guy next door wants to smoke pot, do meth, or
kill himself. It's OK with me so long as he doesn't try to sell it to
my kids, or blow his house up and damage mine, or ask me to help him
kill himself. You should have the freedom here to reach out all the
way to the tip of your neighbor's nose, but not to hit it.

Laws are passed to control the unwashed masses. In the case of drug laws, it
has been an
unmitigated disaster. Your country experimented with drug laws in the 1920s
(colloquially known
as prohibition).

From: http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=1017full=1

Although consumption of alcohol fell at the beginning of Prohibition, it
subsequently
increased. Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; crime increased and became
organized; the
court and prison systems were stretched to the breaking point; and corruption
of public
officials was rampant. No measurable gains were made in productivity or reduced
absenteeism.
Prohibition removed a significant source of tax revenue and greatly increased
government
spending. It led many drinkers to switch to opium, marijuana, patent medicines,
cocaine, and
other dangerous substances that they would have been unlikely to encounter in
the absence of
Prohibition.

The entire article is an interesting read, and has tons of citations and
references if you care
to follow the conclusions back.

History is repeating itself, but now the big bad wolf carries a syringe rather
than a bottle.

Re: Peso: A night in Hoorn

Rick,

thanks for the comment.

I have tried many things with this image. :-) Whenever I try to get
rid of the brownish sky it somehow looses oll its atmosphere, as P.J.
wrote before. If I try a b/w conversion, the second I try to make the
blacks black the whole image turns black, too. Maybe I'll give it
another try once I've learned how to use LR/PS a little better.

Photography is a serious hobby for me (or should I say obsession?), but I did

submit form.

May’s theme is “Red Shirt”. Please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Shirt_School_of_Photography if you need
any ideas.

I’ve managed to break the submission form whilst upgrading to a newer
version and I can’t get the new one or the old one to work anymore.
Until I get this straightened out please send your photos, via email, to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Please include “May PUG” in your subject line
and include the following in your email message:

Photo title, your name, your web site (if you have one), your email
address (if you would like it to be displayed), technical info (camera,
lens, exposure, etc.), and any comments about the photo you’d like to
include.

Finally, attach the photo. If you can, try to keep the file size under
256k. Don’t worry about dimensions. Those will be adjusted later.
JPEG photos are preferred.

Thanks a bunch for your patience. I’ll try to get this resolved asap.

May PUG update

2008-04-14 Thread Scott Loveless
We have a form!

Finally.

So it looks like I botched the mysql database when I tried to upgrade
cforms (the script that creates the submit form). In true stupid user
fashion I hadn't backed up the database, which means cforms ain't gonna
work no more. At least, not until I figure out how to repair the
database (not happening any time soon).

The new script, called Secure Form Mailer, is a bit simpler, doesn't
have quite as many options, and is actually easier to configure. Plus,
it's up right now. So head on over to http://www.pdmlpug.org/ and
submit something.

Thanks for your patience. One of these years I'll figure out how to do

Bill,
My father was born in 1920 and had no memories of prohibition.
If that's what your asking me to compare to, you're gonna have to find

He is taking public defender cases on cocaine arrests of gangbangers.
How much of that do they have in Regina?

  Mishka,
The legal and police actions against drugs are the result of petty and
not so petty thievery - burglary, robbery, and assaults against the
general population.

Although consumption of alcohol fell at the beginning of Prohibition, it
 subsequently
increased. Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; crime increased and
 became organized; the
court and prison systems were stretched to the breaking point; and corruption
 of public
officials was rampant. No measurable gains were made in productivity or
 reduced absenteeism.
Prohibition removed a significant source of tax revenue and greatly increased
 government
spending. It led many drinkers to switch to opium, marijuana, patent
 medicines, cocaine, and
other dangerous substances that they would have been unlikely to encounter in
 the absence of
 Prohibition.

The entire article is an interesting read, and has tons of citations and
 references if you care
 to follow the conclusions back.

History is repeating itself, but now the big bad wolf carries a syringe

What I meant is that since Quebec is a part of Canada, to say that
Canada has a problem with a part of itself doesn't make a lot of
sense.

And, in fact, what's really been happening is a power struggle between
the government of the Province of Quebec and Canada's Federal
Government.

If one takes it that Quebec is the people that inhabit it (as opposed
to whoever may governing from time to time) then it's shown
consistently that it wants to remain in Canada.

Back at the time of Confederation (1867) about 20 to 25% of the
population did not want to join the Canadian Confederation. The
percentage of ~hardcore~ separatists in Quebec has remained remarkably
consistent ever since.

If the pot is sweetened by using wishy-washy concepts such as
sovreignty association (touted to be an autonomous Quebec that
shares such things as currency and armed forces with what's left of
Canada - as if The Rest of Canada would go along with that) then
supporters of change can swell up to close to 50%. If the population
is asked misleading questions that make it look like they're voting
for negotiations rather than separation, the numbers swell. I lived
in Quebec during the first referendum, and many yes (ie: yes to
separation) voters that I knew didn't want separation, but only wanted
to send a message to Ottawa. They honestly thought that that
referendum was only a mandate to start sovreignty negotiations with
Ottawa, nothing more.

But, when asked the simple question, Do you want Quebec to separate
completely from Canada, the numbers have rarely varied over the
years.

Quebec doesn't want to separate. Never has. Never will.

frank

I'd tend to agree with Frank here. Which is why I'm a fan of the trend
towards increased provincial autonomy that the current federal
government has been pushing. Being a native westerner from the heart
of Reform country in southern-central BC, the West has many of the
same political issues with the Federal Government as Quebec (But with
a different set of Cultural issues). Moving towards a federal
government that's weaker on domestic issues benefits both the West and
Quebec, and reduces the stress level within Confederation.

Of course, I've long been of the opinion that the Western Provinces
(or more accurately, BC and Alberta) are more likely to separate than
Quebec. There's a lot less economic and cultural ties between them
and Central and Eastern Canada than there is between Quebec and the
surrounding provinces.

I do not in any way condone drug use, however what's clear to me is

There are now more addicts out there, and they're filling jails at a
