It's a superb lens (I own the older Contax/Yashica version). But I'd skip it in Pentax mount because it simply doesn't justify the price gap over the FA 50/1.4. The Pentax lens is a superb performer and costs around half of the other 50/1.4 options cost (and a little over a third of the cost of the Zeiss). There is also the Nokton 58/1.4 to consider as well as the new 55/1.4 from Pentax. Reports are trickling in that the 55 is a very slow lens for AF speed, but is very sharp wide open. Re: Re: light meters
I find metering very easy. I do bracketing - mostly three shots, when working with my K20 of K10. I don't have time for guessing and experimenting a lot. I often use TvA program for shooting in varied light conditions. I set the shutter to perhaps 1/250 and the aperture to F:8. Then i simply consentrate on my subject. I get sharp pictures, and almost always one, exposed right. Grain/noise is not a problem, when I sell pictures. The costumers just want sharp images. Grain is not really an issue. I often set the meter to -1/3 stop, in order to avoid burned highlights. Naturally I shot RAW exclusively. I also find the matrix metering on my K20 excellent. I recently did a lot of snow images. The snow was really WHITE - not grey. Burnded highlights were easily removed in Capture One 4.1 Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. And I'm finding that's still true today, even with my older Program Plus. Even in tricky situations it -- for the most part -- chooses the exposure I would've chosen. I love it. So maybe I really don't need a separate light meter after all? That nasty old gear-headedness poking its head up again. ;) ~Nick David Wright http://pedalingprose.wordpress.com/ My experience with camera meters is that pretty much everybody can do spot and centre-weighted right. But Matrix/Multi-segment is hard to get right, requiring either a large number of cells or some very good design work. The only low-cell count matrix meter I ever found to be any good is the original Nikon 5-cell Matrix meter used on the FA, F801(s), F601(m) and F4. The worst I've used are the Minolta/Sony's (Completely useless in low light with any point light sources). I found Canon and Pentax do deliver similar results, the Pentax are marginally better at the low end and the Canons better at the high end (the 60+ or 35 cells in the 1D/1Ds meters tells over a lower cell count). The best multi-segment metering, by a large margin, is the Nikon 1005 pixel Color Matrix Meter in both variations. Very hard to bamboozle that meter. But the histogram is an actual measure of how good your exposure is. However its only truly useful for the RAW shooter as a good histogram delivers the best data, not necessarily the best looking JPEG. -- M. Re: light meters
For all but the most difficult subjects, you can use the spotmeter on a Pentax digital to determine zone exposure, although that's necessary only on rare occasions. I have a Vivitar 230XL meter that does incident and flash metering in addition to other modes. I never use it when shooting digital with ambient light or on-camera flash. The camera meters and histogram are fine for that. I do use the incident flash meter in the studio to calculate lighting ratios from multiple sources. When shooting digital, I shoot only RAW and go for the good histogram. It doesn't get any better than that no matter how many meters one might use. Re: histograms
Histograms and light meters. The light meter, if you know how to use it properly, tells you what kind of exposure you're going to get. The histogram tells you what kind of exposure you actually got. The if you know how to use it properly caveat is what trips people up - even the best, most experienced photographers, occasionally. That's why good photographers check their histograms frequently. Data point: In editing the PDML Photo Annual, I found that approximately 80% of the images I received had overexposure/clipping problems serious enough to require significant Photoshop work to correct before printing. (And that doesn't include shots like Luka Knezevic-Strika's Leaving and Derby Chang's Wearable Art, both of which used overexposure deliberately for artistic effect.) Most people who don't think they need to check their histograms need to check their histograms. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: shooting green
The rocks appear to have very good detail especially for the file size. Fine detail in the grass would be quite a challenge at this distance. The sun angle (diagonally from UL to LR) would be somewhat reflective and thereby lighten the tone of green. Why it should vary in the conversion, I can't say. Re: light meters
I have two light meters: Sekonic L208 and Sekonic L328. I use them both. I don't seem to have the problems that others report with the L208 suggesting underexposure but then, to me, a meter is just that: a meter. I interpret the meters' reading per what I know of the scene. The same goes for the in-camera metering system. I spend a good bit of time and energy learning what the in-camera meter does in all its various modes and a broad variety of lighting situations, using whatever tools are needed. Including the histogram display. And then, knowing what a meter does, I turn off all the analytic tools and just shoot without looking, when I'm working. My primary need for a hand held meter these days is for flash setups so the L208 gets only occasional use and the L328 is used with the standard incident dome 90%+ of the time. I also use it for calibration testing of the in-camera meters. Were I in the market for a new meter now, I'd buy the Sekonic L358 which replaced the L328 in their line. It has a larger dome and more sensitivity, a little nicer shape in the hand. But overall, learning the particulars of an in-camera meter and using it properly is more than adequate for the VAST majority of my work. That, and guessing intelligently. ;-) Godfrey On Feb 25, 2009, at 7:04 PM, Nick David Wright wrote: I personally really hate that process. Shoot, chimp, shoot, chimp. That's one of the myriad reasons I was so anxious to switch back to Pentax, in my experience with the cameras in the past the meters were extremely reliable. And I'm finding that's still true today, even with my older Program Plus. Even in tricky situations it -- for the most part -- chooses the exposure I would've chosen. I love it. So maybe I really don't need a separate light meter after all? RE: light meters
From: Bob W Sekonic Studio Deluxe is probably the only current one that doesn't use batteries. It's a venerable standard that's been in use by professionals for years. It's not light by modern standards, but it's perfectly usable. It does require you to use metal slides under many circumstances. I had one for a long time - still have it, in fact - but now I mainly use a Sekonic L-308 M. I have also had an L-208, which is extremely small and light, but I wasn't happy with the readings it gave me - they tended towards underexposure - and it seems to have stopped working altogether now. Finally, I have an L-608 Zoom master, which is an all singing and dancing everything meter which I rarely use because of its size and because the L-308 M does everything I usually need. http://www.sekonic.co.uk/ KEH has a good selection of used Sekonic and other meters. They are currently showing an EX quality L408 (my own personal preference) - water resistant, ambient/flash, built in 5 deg spot, retractable Lumisphere for contrast light measurment and multi-flash mode for cumulative flash measurements (flash measurement operates with or without sync attachment). Aperture, shutter priority, and EV exposure modes. Requires a single AA battery, and in my experience even cheap batteries last a long time. I power mine with AA batteries salvaged from used disposable, one time use cameras. They also have an EX+ L508 which seems to be an upgrade from the L408. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Anyway, OS/2 had great technology and no marketing, and was buried by Microsoft's fantastic marketing of their nonexistent technology. Frickin' IBM couldn't sell ice-water in hell. BTW, if you pull up the version information for Windows 95, it will tell you it's MS DOS 7.0 PS BTW, I dragged out Internet Exploder (I didn't bother to expunge it from this system, just hid it away) and watched the video. From: David Savage The stimulus money is only effective if it's kept within our economy :-) Cheers Dave 2009/2/26 Derby Chang der...@iinet.net.au: Mr Gandy is taking deposits for the 20mm SLII. http://www.cameraquest.com/Voigt_SL2.htm I think I might hold onto my stimulus money for a little while longer until the actual price is announced, but this sure does look tempting. I ain't seeing all that much stimulus outa' what's been passed. What I understand, they're going to go for a reduction in tax withholding to spread it out over the year, so people won't just use it to pay bills and such. According to everything I read, I should get $400. That's going to amount to between $15 - $20 per paycheck for me ... but it ain't happened yet. Meanwhile, I'm already getting a $50 per paycheck cut in pay from my employer. So, when the stimulus finally kicks in, I'm only going to be seeing $30 - $35 less per paycheck instead of $50. Assuming I still have a job. I'm really inspired to go out right now and just burn a hole through my credit cards. Windows 3.1 could just be shut down and the game run in DOS and Win95 had MUCH better support for DOS games than OS/2.
