transcend class 10 sdhc card in a K-x ?
I've been having good luck with my transcend class 6 sdhc cards, and most of the reviews for their class 10 cards have been favorable. They are also half the cost of the sandisk. Then I saw this review: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1A40Y4F6WXZI2/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R1A40Y4F6WXZI2 I bought this for my pentax K-x but it would randomly corrupt images. Also, it was slower than my 3+ year old SandDisk Ultra 1GB card. I was told by the seller (Thememstore) that others with the k-x have had the same problems. So apparently it must have something to do with the class 10 part, because since I returned this card I bought a SandDisk Extreme III 4GB Class 6 and it works far better. feh, I don't want to spend twice as much if I don't have to, but that's better than losing pictures. Also, has anyone done any tests between 20 and 30 mb/s cards in their cameras and noticed a difference? As has been observed, you want a card that's just a little faster than your camera, but how fast is that? -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

As someone who rarely buys camera equipment, especially DSLRs, I'd like just a few moments to reflect in the moment of having something you can still buy new in a shop. A rare moment indeed for me. Re: OT: DSLR Video
Informed sources have told me that many of the recordings for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest (finals in Oslo in May) will be done with DSLRs. The stated reason is a certain fashion for shallow depth of field in videos. The rumor also told about complications from codec- and file format diverstity among brands. Pentax started with the Samsung sensors because they couldn't rely on Sony. After they've got better results than Sony from the same sensor, I'd expect that to be even more true. My expectation is that the next one is a 645D body with a full-frame size sensor. They get to keep to 2 lens lines, they get an intro point out there at well below 10 kUSD, they don't need to replace the body design, and the sensor won't be either Sony or Samsung. -- Graydon Pentax switched to Samsung for two reasons, They didn't want to be beholden to Sony and Sony didn't have an available CMOS sensor at the time (the 1st gen 12MP CMOS APS-C part was exclusive to Nikon at that point). Samsung has proven to be a worse partner than Sony and Sony is no longer doing exclusive deals with Nikon so the first issue is resolved and Sony has plenty of modern sensor designs available to 3rd parties so the second prolem is resolved. I expect the next sensor will be a Sony and that aside from the 645D line Pentax will be exclusively Sony for Sensors. -- M. Some other designs floating around, but all are at least several years behind state of the art AND lacking in production capacity, While I'm sure Pentax could do a better job with high ISO than Leica has with the M9, I'd still much rather prefer a Sony sensor. And why did you say Pentax couldn't rely on Sony for sensors? Because Pentax had serious trouble getting them on time and in sufficient quantity, and that was when Sony was just selling them to Nikon, not putting them in their own cameras. Japanese companies do not start buying high tech anything from Korean companies without a very strong reason. Sony, as a corporate objective, wants every other DSLR camera maker on the planet out of business. They may not be able to accomplish this but they're going to try. Makes them a bad choice, different business division or not within Sony, for a primary provider of a critical part. -- Graydon Sony's camera division wants everybody else gone. Sony's semiconductor division wants the biggest market possible. Camera division is break-even at best, semiconductor division makes money. Guess which Sony's head office listens to? Especially after the disastrous sales year the camera division had (they're in the process of falling behind Panasonic in sales numbers on the DSLR side of things). Sony's not monolithic in the least and corporate goals are limited to within each silo. Sony now has a track record on how they handle sensors while competing in the same market. This track record is remarkably non-Evil for Sony. All of their sensors are now available to 3rd parties when launched, since the Camera division can't live with Nikon having exclusivity deals but the Camera Division can't generate enough sales to get their own exclusivity. -- M. It has more, and better, of most of the good things we like. But my holistic overall impression is that its images just look more digital, in some fundamental way, rather than just photographic. To test that impression, I compared it with what is becoming my Old Trusty, the Pentax K20D, a currently $810 camera with a really good APS-C sized sensor (and which I also don't own, N.B.) The 5D Mark II is better than the 14.6-megapixel K20D. But it's not that much better. If the 5D Mark II lags behind the D700 by not-quite-a-stop in high-ISO noise, then the K20D lags behind the 5D Mark II also by not-quite-a-stop—certainly it looks at least as good at ISO 1250 as the Canon looks at ISO 2500 (and yes, I ran the tests). And the Canon does indeed have more resolution—but not that much more resolution. A paper size, maybe? Maybe a tad less? I think, in a nutshell, that captures what I like about my Pentax. It's a DSLR, but it is so photographic in its results (in the very best analog sense of the word). I agree with this as I have the same impression. And it's the main reason (besides no budget) that I'm not at all compelled to upgrade beyond the K20D. I'm very pleased with its IQ and I'm not bothered by its grain. I know I can reduce it with Noiseware, but oftentimes I simply don't bother because it appears quite film-like to me. I think that it's a sign of maturity in the digital camera world that a body is proving to have a fairly long potential life. It has (a) sufficient resolution for all my expected uses (b) excellent IQ (c) a great lens ecosystem (for my uses). Now I'm just going to continue carrying it around and become more familiar with it so I can be a more intuitive photographer. -- The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera. ~ Dorothea Lange I just realized that four years ago I'd have dismissed that as one of the most fatuous statements I'd ever read. Paul The tradeoff in low-ISO detail has everything to do with that extra 2.5MP and nothing to do with high ISO capabilities, it's just enough to make the small visible difference we're seeing and resolution testing backs it up (the K-x has excellent resolution for a 12MP camera). The 14.6MP Sony sensor resolves similarly to the Samsung part (when comparing the A550 to the K-7) while still delivering much better high ISO performance. I expect it will be the 14.6MP Sony sensor, not the K-x's 12MP sensor, in the K-7 update. Samsung is still on the learning curve with their sensors, I expect the next generation will be better. Here's a thought: for starters, what about trying to get in touch with William McInnes? He's local, well-known, and I think he is the kind of man who would want to take your project forward. Another local is Veronica Neave: you may recall that she had both breasts removed after fearing that she would get cancer because of her family history(almost all female members suffered from it), and while I am not sure if she has children, I think her sister does, and there might be a tie-in there. Same with better quality high-ISO capability. I prefer the K-x sensor at all ISO's to the Samsung sensor and I use both (but I try not to use the Samsung sensor over around ISO640). I don't feel really comfortable taking the K7 over ISO 640, which was also where I started seeing unacceptable noise off the K20. K7 exposure is far more accurate than the K20's, the dynamic range seems about a stop better, and noise is improved as well. The deer pics I showed the other day were ISO 800. My pic in the PDML annual is at ISO 3200. I got decent results at the pool tournament shooting 6400. K7 noise level isn't as good as Kx, but it's somewhat better than K20.
