Re: OT -Christchurch hit again
I'm feeling a bit numb at the moment. Janet brought a paper home today which had a map showing a few notable locations. Three people died at Trocadero Bakery in Cashel St which was one of my regular lunchtime haunts. I just read a bit more on the web, the shop staff on the ground floor made it out safely which is a relief, but I still feel saddened by the deaths and the loss of the bakery itself. It was about the smallest shop you can imagine but somehow they made it work. There was just enough space in the shop for staff, display cabinets and customers. You had to move to let others come past as there was only room for two customers between the food and the wall. Maybe three if you didn't mind making the others feel slightly uncomfortable. I'd usually call in there on my way back from lunch to pick up a chelsea bun to have for afternoon tea, usually if I'd be going out running or biking that afternoon... and often just because I tend to get hungry. Best chelsea buns I've ever had. They used a soft icing instead of a glaze so you get a good sugar kick followed by lasting energy from the bread. I had a "shower" today, more of a stand-up sponge bath, and I feel a bit better for it. Hopefully I don't smell too much :) Dave -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Just got my federal tax return, and as soon as a check from the great state of California shows up, I'm gonna be ordering me a K-5! This is the first year I don't need my tax return to save my ass from some huge bill, so I'm super happy about the whole situation. As Larry has demonstrated in another thread, prices are all over the board. I've noticed this too, along with some pretty big fluctuations in either direction, for the last couple months. I'd be willing to bet the price will come down for real shortly after I buy the damn thing, but I don't care too much. I will be SO glad to be rid of my lemon K10D! I did. I ended up in a field in Nebraska. As long as Pentax makes money for Hoya it can continue to live. For a small company, that means making relatively quick changes. Yes one of the more striking images I've seen. The dust was pretty thick in there, I was starting to make my way back towards the office but had to stop for a few moments as I could hardly see and it wasn't much fun to breathe in. That gave me time to try calling Janet but couldn't get through as the lines were jammed. It settled pretty quickly and I wasn't in the mood to hang around... I had absolutely no idea of the scale of destruction across the CBD at the time. I had another surreal moment on the way back to the office, passing a giant upside-down green copper dome that used to perch atop another building that had partially collapsed. Between that and seeing the state of Colombo St on the way home, I knew we had a major disaster on our hands. I found out yesterday that the guy who owns the rest home where my mother works was killed by falling rocks. The home is in the suburb of Redcliffs, with large towering cliffs behind. They relocated all of the residents to other rest homes for safety reasons, and we have no idea what's going to happen to my mother for work. I haven't heard anything regarding my own work yet. Financially we can cope without my income so I'm not too anxious about it. Two of my colleagues have left the city for a while and a third is planning to go very soon. I've thought about flying to Wellington just so I can have a shower, but I might just wait for it to rain instead :) Dave -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It's a living language, and one of the powerful evolutionary forces leaning on it is the prevalence of written Internet-mediated communication. Some of this stuff will catch on, some not. Re: Peso: The Fire
I got curious because the image I found was only 1220 by 700, obviously a crop. I found an entire folder dropped into another folder, which I missed. 75-80 shots of Hopset and Hampi, including the original of this one. Quite a find, since Hampi was one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. I had forgotten about these pictures, and it's really strange to look at them knowing that I took them. Has this happened to anyone else? For some reason, this one makes me think of Cotty: http://drd1135.smugmug.com/Photography/pdml/15174580_NVzVH#1197695783_A2JsC-L-LB On Thu, Feb 24, 2011 at 6:53 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: > > > Steven Desjardins wrote: > >> Just a kid sitting by the side of the road behind a building. The relative merits of mathematics and natural language aren't relevant here, nor am I suggesting to Boris that his normal writing is clumsy or that he needs to be more precise. On the contrary, it is Boris who is worried about the quality of his writing and inventing obscure ways of trying to explain to us what his writing is already telling us. > Perhaps this is why gesture and facial > expressions are such an integral part of successful communications. > And why face-to-face communications are so superior to other forms. that's as may be, but we're not in a face-to-face situation. We're on a mailing list so writing is all we've got. These 'metamessages' that Boris has been adding to his normal writing are just another form of writing, but rather than helping to get his message across they are hindering it. For some reason known only to Boris he has decided that traditional writing is inadequate and that he can invent a better system. My message to Boris is this: Boris, your writing is fine. You don't need all the encrustations - they just make it worse. Showing my age ( not that I haven't done that before), during the reign of the typewriter that I grew up with there were no italics at all. e.g. - http://www.willdavis.org/TilmanUnderwoodPort1932Junior611468.jpg Later - in the early 60's I used an IBM electric typewriter with a ball head, and you could change typeface by changing the little balls the type was on. as I recall, we used underlining to indicate what should be in italics if you were printing something in the newspaper, or a magazine or a book. And yes, you had to back up and type in the underlines under the words. ann -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Looking for balance (in a bag)
Ok, so I looked at the subject line and thought I was reading my Scrabble list email ! (If you actually play the game, you'll get the reference .) I wish I could carry as much in my photo bag as I'd like but I managed my zoo trip yesterday with Tamrac with a comfy shoulder strap and a thick belt strap - the DA 55-300 on the ist d, the 28mm manual lens I've had since 1975, a water bottle in an end pocket, extra batteries and and df card in the mesh pocket under the lid my canon Sx120 in my jacket pocket (occasional vid shooting) , notebook, cellphone and a bit of lunch and a little table top tripod that I didn't use at all. the belt helped me considerably and a stock boys vest helps too. tamracs are great bags The made compartment is 12" x 6" , two end poockets and one side pocket... I could have fit lots more in it.. I think they still make this one, but can't remember its name ann Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: My "I gotta carry a healthy bit of camera stuff including longer lenses" bag is a Domke F3x. It's boxy and squarish in shape, can hold two pretty long lenses plus camera with another bulky lens fitted, and a bunch of accessories. Two built-in side pouches, a big front pocket, a back sleeve pocket, and a zippered pocket inside the top makes it quite capacious. Thankfully, I don't really have to use anything like that much anymore. I moved my flash gear from the F6 "little bit smaller" to the F3x for occasional use, and can now fit camera with lens and four additional lenses in the F6.
