 G'day' all.

Well, a smaller gallery than for the past few months but an enjoyable
one just the same - and several people took the opportunity to submit to
the Open Gallery, so that was good.

The prize for the most innovative interpretation of the theme (not that
there is a prize, mind) must go to Steve - difficult to deny that it's
right on topic, even though no Kodachrome was injured in its production.

 You'll find the gallery here:

 http://pug.komkon.org/

I'm also taking the opportunity to re-post this image from the January
PUG. It's not officially part of the April gallery but it certainly
 conforms to the theme!

 http://pug.komkon.org/11jan/slides/JM-Kodachrome.html

Next up: May - Found Objects (now that's a theme that opens up lots of
 possibilities)

 Submit here:

 Submission Guidelines here:

Remember there are now increased image size limits  (max. pixel size 800

Blurb deals

2011-04-08 Thread Matthew Hunt
With the imminent availability of the PDML Annual, I wanted to pass on
a couple of Blurb discount offers.

First: Today's Pittsburgh(*) Groupon offer is for $45 of Blurb Custom
Book Creations for $20. You pay the $20 to Groupon, and you'll get a
code to use at Blurb for $45, by July 11, 2011. My assumption is that
this $45 credit can be used toward the PDML Annual, but I'm not
positive what Custom Book Creations means. There is some risk, in
which case I guess I'll be learning how to put a book together.

Groupon deal: http://gr.pn/ecm6eC

That URL is my personal referral code. If three of you buy the deal
through that URL, I will get my $20 back. If that happens, I will
donate the $20 to Dana-Farber.

(*) I guess someone noticed that Blurb is unusually popular in
Pittsburgh, but didn't get the memo that Mark moved.

Second: I got these codes in an email from Blurb. They're for 2 or
more books, ordered by April 27, 2011. The GBP-land folks may want to
discuss the timing of Mothering Sunday with Blurb.

USD $ coupon: BLURBMOM

Re: OT: The New Jersey Eagles

2011-04-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Our nest is in the middle of the former Doris Duke Estate, now an
environmental education center. The area was all farmland 5o years
ago, but the fields all sprouted condominiums and strip malls.

For as long as I can remember, Duke Gardens maintained a fabulous set
of greenhouses there, displaying flora from all over the known
planets. Each house featured a certain clime of garden style: desert
plants, and English garden, a Japanese garden, etc. The foundation
that owns the property decided that was environmentally incorrect, and
has therefore replaced the gardens with an environmental education
center.
The eagle found there own way there, as they have in several of our
state parks in Central Jersey.  The Eagle Cam has been a big hit;
perhaps the low numbers reflect in part the fact that at least two
websites carry the live broadcast.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Late yesterday afternoon was the best show I
have ever seen. The male brought a fish to the nest, and the female
chewed up pieces and fed them to the first chick (2 eggs have yet to
hatch) while the male stayed in the nest to watch.

RE: 7 news tomorrow night for Aussies...

2011-04-08 Thread Tanya Love
Thanks so much everyone!

Steven, that is exactly my mission too - I want to be sure that they know I
am genuinely there to help them in any way that I can and not just trying to
get some attention on myself or my business, as so many others have done
through this whole thing.

But, man, if I don't come up with the goods by way of getting all of these
calendars sold, I will feel SO terrible as I really have their trust and
their hopes are high that I will be able to raise the funds that they need
to get some bills paid and some projects
Happening that they are all depending on.

Very happy to receive orders from our website for international peeps - the
calendar *is* distinctly Aussie though, including the Australian public
holidays and school terms etc, so please don't be disappointed if you order
one from overseas to discover that is the case.

Currently the website is open to pre-orders, just to assist in cash flow and
the PR side of things as we don't want media sending people to a
non-functioning website. Printing will be completed within 10 days though,
and all pre-orders will be filled immediately then.

On a personal level, my rational brain keeps saying just what many of you
have said if it sells more calendars then who cares how they do it?, but I
still have this nagging voice in the background saying this is not about
you, keep your ego in check as I know that there
Already family members of mine who are whinging and saying that I am only
doing this for personal glory. I am SO determined to prove them wrong. I
don't know how to do this, except to keep on going back to Grantham and
working hard out there to help in any way that I can, so I guess I'll just
keep doing that and hope I can shake it.

A friend gave me great advice today. She said Repeat after me, What
people think of me, is none of my business! I am making this my new mantra
and trying to put my head down and bum up and just keep on plugging along
and hope that I don't offend anyone by doing so!

Actually, I think I had TWO of the Pentax-A 28mm f2.8, one came with a

Sort of wanted one to do my 28mm lens test comparison with, so I hope

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

Remember there are now increased image size limits (max. pixel size 800
x 800; max. file size 300k) - see the submission guidelines for full
details.

A few weeks ago I was having problems with my f1.7 50mm. AF wouldn't
work, AE wouldn't work, camera wouldn't recognize it at all. Being my
fastest lens, I wasn't happy.

The other night I decided to give it another try, and all went well.
I guess it was just a dirty contact something, but it works just fine
now.

I took a few test shots in the kitchen, and I kind of liked this one -
don't know why, but I do. Nothing spectacular, just a little still
life in the kitchen, I guess:

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2011/04/bookshelf-in-kitchen.html

Brought to mind a few questions, though:

One would think that How to Cook Everything Vegetarian would be
smaller than How to Cook Everything, vegetarian options being a subset
of Everything to Eat.

I really like some of the titles, like the Good Food Book. Do you
think they test marketed the Bad Food Book and the Mediocre Food Book
before they settled on Good Food Book?

My favourite title is Eek Cooking. I joked with my SO that it
described her cooking style very well. She restrained herself from
striking me. Of course, it's just a rip in the dust jacket, the
proper title is Greek Cooking.

;-)

Hope you enjoy this simple still life. Comments welcome.

PDML Book update and expenses

2011-04-08 Thread Mark Roberts
The test copy of the 2011 PDML Photo Annual looks great. My S.O. had
judged it the best one yet, both in terms of book design and the
photography it contains. High praise indeed. There are very few image
tweaks to be made and a couple of typos that slipped through the
gauntlet. I should hear in the next day or so about the Pediatric
Oncology Global Outreach official status with Dana-Farber and I'll
make the necessary additions/changes to the copy in the book. We'll be
good to go at that point. Monday? Tuesday? I want to get in under the
wire for the Blurb sale price thing.

I'd like to send out a few copies of the book for promotional purposes
- to a couple web sites and print publications, some people at Pentax
who've helped and to a couple of the physicians and scientists who are
working on the project. My current part-time faculty position leaves
me in no financial position to pay for this on my own as I have in

Focus chart help, please

2011-04-08 Thread Sam L
Hi all,

I have a K-x that seems to me to always be just a little soft
focusing. I'd like to finally get around to testing it a little
scientifically. To that end I have downloaded the focus charts etc
from
http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart

I know I'm supposed to test using the smallest possible depth of
field. Here are the lenses I can use:

Auto Focus:
DA40
18-50 Kit
50-300 Kit

Is the DA40 adequate for determining the focus accuracy of the AF system?

I also have these MF lenses, but am not sure how to best test out the
MF focus system (which is a combination of me and the camera).

Re: Focus chart help, please

2011-04-08 Thread Bulent Celasun
Sam,

For each lens you have to make separate test(s).
For 18-55mm and 55-300 mm lenses you can either make the tests for the
focal length you use most
(say, 28mm for the kit lens and 70mm for the tele); or choose a mid
value for each zoom as if they were primes at that focal length.
For the 40mm, you just test.

I am not sure whether you can make focus adjustments on Kx, though...

If you just want to see if there is a problem with your camera's AF
hardware, you may need another properly focusing Pentax DSLR around.
Try the DA 40mm with both; if your camera does not focus correctly
(but the other does), it may need to be fixed.

The test copy of the 2011 PDML Photo Annual looks great. My S.O. had
judged it the best one yet, both in terms of book design and the
photography it contains. High praise indeed. There are very few image
tweaks to be made and a couple of typos that slipped through the

make the necessary additions/changes to the copy in the book. We'll be

lovely! Love Dan's color work in his flower picture.

Have to say Ken's picture is one of more elegant cormorant pictures I've

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

Remember there are now increased image size limits (max. pixel size 800
x 800; max. file size 300k) - see the submission guidelines for full
details.

Auto focus issue - 16-50mm f2.8 SMC D*

2011-04-08 Thread kwaller
As I previously posted, I had been experiencing inconsistent/nonexistent
auto focus with this lens.

I sent it off to C.R.I.S. - took 13 days for repair/return from when they
contacted me about it.

For $173.USD, ($58 for the SDM $115 for labor) the SDM was replaced, lens
adjusted to manufacturers specs (?), a general check clean and a 6 month
service warranty.

The lens returned as pristine as when I sent it and it now autofocuses 100%
of the time. Time will tell.

I requested the removed part, out of curiosity,
it shown here http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=12929992

The SDM itself is smaller in diameter than an American dime and about 3

How does the M28 3.5 compare to the 2.8 version? I recently got a 2.8

weird discovery

I'm in the middle of a couple of fairly big projects around the house, and it's
handy to get photos to document it.

I recently made a surprising discovery. When all I need is a snaphsot that
does a decent job of getting the exposure close enough, the green mode actually
works ell enough, even with the pop-up flash.

Not really all that obvious because I pretty much learned using DSLRs with the
K100 and K20, which I found would take good shots, if you carefully told them
exactly what to do, but letting the camera think for itself was generally a
recipe for disaster.

I'd still disagree.

While I rarely use green mode, I'd say well over half my shots are taken in
P
mode (which is kinda like green mode with a few more options available). That
was true even with my *ist-D (and, before that, the PZ-1p and MZ-S).

And, of course, the vast majority of cameras (of all makes) are sold to people
who probably use green/P mode on an even higher proportion of their shots.
But, despite that, they manage to end up with some pretty decent shots (well,
unless they use RAW - you still get posts complaining about the lack of punch
in shots straight out of the camera. That happens for JPEGs, too, as a recent
post reminds us, but it was far more common complaint about RAW images).

For tricky light I'll spot meter; for specific visual effects I'll shoot
aperture or shutter priority. And I'll dial in exposure compensation if
I know I'm shooting in situations that require it. But if I'm not using
any of those (and even when I am using spot metering) the camera ends up
set in just the same way it would be in green mode. Most of the time
that's close enough for all but the most demanding scenarios.

PESO: Grey Warbler

2011-04-08 Thread David Mann
http://www.multi.net.nz/grey-warbler/

These little guys are often heard in NZ forests but are rarely seen, and are
nearly impossible to photograph. They are very small and are constantly on the
move. I think this one is a juvenile.

We've had a couple of them hanging about in our garden recently. I consider it
quite a privilege to have them around. You can hear their song here:
http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/small-forest-birds/8/1

Sorry about the noise, it's my K10D at ISO800 and I had to use the
shadow/highlight tool due to the backlighting. FA*400mm f/5.6 handheld. I'll
buy a K-5 tomorrow after I win tonight's lottery.

Cheers,
