Blurb deals
With the imminent availability of the PDML Annual, I wanted to pass on a couple of Blurb discount offers. First: Today's Pittsburgh(*) Groupon offer is for $45 of Blurb Custom Book Creations for $20. You pay the $20 to Groupon, and you'll get a code to use at Blurb for $45, by July 11, 2011. My assumption is that this $45 credit can be used toward the PDML Annual, but I'm not positive what Custom Book Creations means. There is some risk, in which case I guess I'll be learning how to put a book together. Groupon deal: http://gr.pn/ecm6eC That URL is my personal referral code. If three of you buy the deal through that URL, I will get my $20 back. If that happens, I will donate the $20 to Dana-Farber. They're for 2 or more books, ordered by April 27, 2011. The GBP-land folks may want to discuss the timing of Mothering Sunday with Blurb. Re: OT: The New Jersey Eagles
Our nest is in the middle of the former Doris Duke Estate, now an environmental education center. The area was all farmland 5o years ago, but the fields all sprouted condominiums and strip malls. For as long as I can remember, Duke Gardens maintained a fabulous set of greenhouses there, displaying flora from all over the known planets. Each house featured a certain clime of garden style: desert plants, and English garden, a Japanese garden, etc. The foundation that owns the property decided that was environmentally incorrect, and has therefore replaced the gardens with an environmental education center. The eagle found there own way there, as they have in several of our state parks in Central Jersey. The Eagle Cam has been a big hit; perhaps the low numbers reflect in part the fact that at least two websites carry the live broadcast. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Late yesterday afternoon was the best show I have ever seen. The male brought a fish to the nest, and the female chewed up pieces and fed them to the first chick (2 eggs have yet to hatch) while the male stayed in the nest to watch. PESO - The Bookshelf in the Kitchen
A few weeks ago I was having problems with my f1.7 50mm. AF wouldn't work, AE wouldn't work, camera wouldn't recognize it at all. Being my fastest lens, I wasn't happy. The other night I decided to give it another try, and all went well. I guess it was just a dirty contact something, but it works just fine now. I took a few test shots in the kitchen, and I kind of liked this one - don't know why, but I do. Nothing spectacular, just a little still life in the kitchen, I guess: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2011/04/bookshelf-in-kitchen.html Brought to mind a few questions, though: One would think that How to Cook Everything Vegetarian would be smaller than How to Cook Everything, vegetarian options being a subset of Everything to Eat. I really like some of the titles, like the Good Food Book. Do you think they test marketed the Bad Food Book and the Mediocre Food Book before they settled on Good Food Book? My favourite title is Eek Cooking. I joked with my SO that it described her cooking style very well. She restrained herself from striking me. Of course, it's just a rip in the dust jacket, the proper title is Greek Cooking. ;-) Hope you enjoy this simple still life. PDML Book update and expenses
The test copy of the 2011 PDML Photo Annual looks great. My S.O. had judged it the best one yet, both in terms of book design and the photography it contains. High praise indeed. There are very few image tweaks to be made and a couple of typos that slipped through the gauntlet. I should hear in the next day or so about the Pediatric Oncology Global Outreach official status with Dana-Farber and I'll make the necessary additions/changes to the copy in the book. We'll be good to go at that point. Monday? Tuesday? I want to get in under the wire for the Blurb sale price thing. I'd like to send out a few copies of the book for promotional purposes - to a couple web sites and print publications, some people at Pentax who've helped and to a couple of the physicians and scientists who are working on the project. My current part-time faculty position leaves me in no financial position to pay for this on my own as I have in previous years, so if any PDMLers are in a position to kick in a couple of dollars I've set up a donations page at http://www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook/donate.htm to help defray the cost of producing and promoting the PDML Photo Annual. Focus chart help, please
Hi all, I have a K-x that seems to me to always be just a little soft focusing. I'd like to finally get around to testing it a little scientifically. To that end I have downloaded the focus charts etc from http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart I know I'm supposed to test using the smallest possible depth of field. Here are the lenses I can use: Auto Focus: DA40 18-50 Kit 50-300 Kit Is the DA40 adequate for determining the focus accuracy of the AF system? I also have these MF lenses, but am not sure how to best test out the MF focus system (which is a combination of me and the camera). Re: Focus chart help, please
Sam, For each lens you have to make separate test(s). For 18-55mm and 55-300 mm lenses you can either make the tests for the focal length you use most (say, 28mm for the kit lens and 70mm for the tele); or choose a mid value for each zoom as if they were primes at that focal length. For the 40mm, you just test. I am not sure whether you can make focus adjustments on Kx, though... If you just want to see if there is a problem with your camera's AF hardware, you may need another properly focusing Pentax DSLR around. Try the DA 40mm with both; if your camera does not focus correctly (but the other does), it may need to be fixed. Not really all that obvious because I pretty much learned using DSLRs with the K100 and K20, which I found would take good shots, if you carefully told them exactly what to do, but letting the camera think for itself was generally a recipe for disaster. I'd still disagree. While I rarely use green mode, I'd say well over half my shots are taken in P mode (which is kinda like green mode with a few more options available). That was true even with my *ist-D (and, before that, the PZ-1p and MZ-S). And, of course, the vast majority of cameras (of all makes) are sold to people who probably use green/P mode on an even higher proportion of their shots. But, despite that, they manage to end up with some pretty decent shots (well, unless they use RAW - you still get posts complaining about the lack of punch in shots straight out of the camera. That happens for JPEGs, too, as a recent post reminds us, but it was far more common complaint about RAW images). For tricky light I'll spot meter; for specific visual effects I'll shoot aperture or shutter priority. And I'll dial in exposure compensation if I know I'm shooting in situations that require it. But if I'm not using any of those (and even when I am using spot metering) the camera ends up set in just the same way it would be in green mode. Most of the time that's close enough for all but the most demanding scenarios. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
