PESO: Happiness is a Warm Kea

2011-09-24 Thread David Mann
My partner Janet took me to Willowbank Wildlife Reserve yesterday as an early
birthday present. It's a small zoo just out of town which is very popular with
kids both big and small.

In one section they have a large aviary where you can walk in and roam free
with several kea, the world's only alpine parrot, which is endemic to NZ.
They're a very curious bird that adapts readily to human activity... and they
also have a real knack for pulling things apart so you have to keep a very good
eye on them.

http://www.multi.net.nz/kea/

Apologies to Frank for the subject line but his recent kitten photo inspired me
to post this :)

I didn't take the K10D so I took it using Janet's little Panasonic compact and
gave it a highlights & shadows tweak in Photoshop.

Cheers,
Dave

It's known as "The fearlessness of youth" which if PDMLrs would dig deep into
their minds they would remember the wonderful things they could do, as long as
they didn't think too much about it.

Skateboards and snowboards come to mind as things I would not dare to try, even
20 years ago. Something would break rather quickly.

Great captures of the indomitable natural grace of Grace.

Hi Everyone:

A couple of things:

1)  That construction project I have been shooting for the past few years is
just about done.  This past week folks began to move into their office space.
My next shoot will be when folks are in and the facilities are being used.

2)  I have two shots below.  The K-5 is an amazing camera.  The first shot, to
my mind, shows how well the K-5 handles exposure.  I did pop the exposure up by
a half stop in Lightroom 3, but that's about it--well, I gave it some punch and
a nudge of noise reduction.  The 2nd shot is straight off camera with some
punch in Lightroom 3.

Our new space looks nice, don't ya think?  cheers, Christine

How can you argue against such impeccable logic?

Hi guys,

Just back from 10 days R & R in Ko Samui, Thailand. Took the K5 on a
Camdapter wrist strap, the 18-135 zoom , a couple of filters (POL and
ND 4X), FGZ 360 flash, in a Lowepro Passport Sling bag. Turned out to
be a great travel kit.

Took lots of holiday snaps; there were a couple I was particularly
pleased with, and one of these is quite relevant given recent
discussions on low-light abilities and the like. It's here:

http://www.pbase.com/petergly/image/138318869

EXIF: 1/90s f/5.6 at 53.0mm @ iso12800. I'm astounded by what the
camera captured. This was basically an unlit beach except for some
reflected light from the restaurant I was standing in. All I've done
is a little contrast adjustment and minor sharpening on the K5 jpeg.
No noise reduction.

Comments most welcome.

Regards,

Pete Mac in Melbourne

Covering the window with a diffuser will tend to reduce the

My understanding is that it has something to do with the codec. Anyway,
it is a problem with the encoder that is being used by the external
displayer.
I'm not sure what the cure is, though apparently, people using
Microsoft's Movie Maker that is shipping with Win Xp and onwards don't
have this happening, so if you are using Windows, you might be able to
re encode it using that program.

Or something.

One could try reducing the overall exposure to kill the hot spots a
little, then add some fill to bring back some of the detail in the
shadows...much the same as doing it "in camera". Might work if the hot
spots aren't too hot.

For minor hot spots and reflections, this technique often works well, too.

As you and others have pointed out, the overall range of EVs is too great
across the scene. Best to fix that upfront with different lighting balance. My
point was that, for these photos already shot, a rescue might be as simple as
an overall exposure reduction. Maybe at the expense of some shadow detail, but
that might be a preferable outcome. I am way worse than a novice when it comes
to PS manipulations in general, so I know that for me any rescue of the type
you suggested would result in total disaster. So I look for alternative
approaches. As I implied, I make no claim that my way is the right way, just
another possible approach.

b. The left side of the three portraits all seem "hot" to me. I wouldn't
fiddle to the extent suggested by Bruce; I would just lower overall exposure a notch or
two.

Stan, the trouble with attempting to tame the hotspot by reducing overall
exposure is that you'll probably end up with underexposure on 98% of the face
with just the hotspot correctly exposed.

You need to either use some makeup (eg powder) to kill the reflection there, or
place a gobo to cut the direct light, or use a larger, less harsh light source.
Christine could likely have positioned a white diffuser on a stand in front of
the window to act both as a partial gobo and to enlarge the light source to cut
the glare. But that would have altered the nature of the light and produced a
different portrait.

I've had multi-focals for the last ten years. Three years ago, I needed
new ones and my optician had just changed his supplier for multi-focals.
Used to be Essilor and then it was Hoya. Tried them on and... yikes!
Like looking through some cheap Taiwanese wide-angle converter. Also,
the useable zone in the centre of the glasses was much smaller. I
couldn't even drive with them.

He suspected an error in production and had them exchanged. Same result.
Eventually he agreed to take them back and order a pair of new glasses
from Essilor. For my next, the current ones, he didn't even try to
suggest Hoya... ;-)

Re: They never want the clear shots

I'm with Bruce on this. Offer her the variations, but she obviously
likes this one because she picked it. After all, you gave her a range
from posed high quality images to "in the moment with all the flaws",
which is what most folks want a photographer to do. Especially
another "artist".

Epson R2400 ink- free plus shipping

I have quite a few ink cartridges for the Epson R2400, a printer I no longer
use -- 8 to 10 I think. Most are a few months past the expiration date, but in
my experience post-date cartridges work fine. They're free to any United States

You've probably switched your raw from DNG to PEF.
If this is the case, and your converter isn't new enough to open the
PEFs, download the DNG converter from Adobe's website.

Get enough fabric and make yourself some big, stand up reflectors as well.
I made a 4x6 foot reflector using copper plumbing pipe, and used a

Don't forget Larry that they'll be tiny on an insert for an album
cover so no need to worry too much about detail. Also she might want
them for their colour to fit in with an overall theme so probably best
not to go too far!

FS Friday late: Anyone wanna buy an Epson 2200 printer?

2011-09-24 Thread Mark Roberts
One of my clients just paid me (in advance!) for a big photo/web
project and I'm thinking of upgrading to the latest Epson R3000
printer. That would leave me with my 9-year-old Epson 2200 to sell.
The problem is... it's a rather large printer. So even at a low price
(I'm thinking $150.00) it probably will need to go to someone local.
(I have the original box and all packing, but I expect shipping won't
be cheap.

So I'm asking The List if anyone's interested. It was refurbished by
Epson last year (Epson's biggest service shop is near Boston so I
didn't have to ship it anywhere - one reason I'm sticking with Epson
printers) It got a new motherboard, print heads, etc..

So anyway... Epson 2200 with two new ink cartridges (black and cyan)
for $150.00 plus shipping if you're too far away to come and pick it
up.

The issue to now was how an $800 camera with such a small sensor would

the things that hold me back from the Q are it's size (it's too small

It's likely that the version of Camera Raw in your version of PSE
doesn't handle the PEFs from your camera but it will handle DNG. As
Paul said - use DNG in future to overcome the problem.

Do you have the Pentax software that came with the camera? That will
open the files. Alternatively you could download and install the free
Raw Therapee software. It's a very nice application with support for
pretty much all recent cameras. It should be able to process the files
and allow you to save them as TIF or JPG:

Re: They never want the clear shots

2011-09-24 Thread Bruce Walker

On 11-09-23 10:38 PM, Larry Colen wrote:

A while back I posted about a friend wanting to use one of my photos for her
album cover. She did a small run of CDs by herself, but now they're going off
to be done for real. So rather than just the album cover, she needs pictures on
the liner notes as well. So, while she's on a business trip, she has to get
some shots ready for her graphic designer to do the layout, she's poking around
on facebook picking her favorite shots, and asked for three more of mine.

That's great, it's a nice ego stroke and all that. One of the shots is what
I'd consider technically acceptable. I had someone hold my AF540 off camera,
and posed a shot of her, and another musician.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6176828342/in/set-72157627606964975

Two, pretty women, with nice smiles, what's not to like? I blew out some of
the highlights, but for quicky portraits done on a stage with a single
speedlight, I'm not complaining.

I'd remove the red-eye from both girls and fix the hotspots and clean up
the skin blemishes on Michelle's cheek. CD art is printed at at least
400dpi and small details are likely to show up.

Another of the shots isn't too bad, if you don't look to closely:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6173860436/in/set-72157627606964975

And for ISO 10,000, it's not too bad. But blow it up at all, and while the K-5
is pretty damned impressive at ISO 10,000, it's still ISO 10,000, and at f/2.8
I'm not quite sure what the camera actually focused on, but I suspect it might
be the bricks behind the musicians.

That one's just fine, I'd say. A good performance shot. The softness
won't matter at the size that's likely to be reproduced.

The last one she wanted, ouch. Considering the lighting, and that I was
shooting hand held with the K-x at ISO4000, it's not bad. But, Don Quixote's
loves their red gels. It looks like it was photographed in a darkroom:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6176866538/
So I tried a b&w conversion:

Stop right there and ask yourself why you are trying to eliminate the
red. It's part of the performance; it's what the audience saw, after
all; it is the character, mood, ambiance of the space. This isn't a
product shoot where you need to colour calibrate everything to remove an
unwanted colour cast.

I'd be willing to bet that the artist chose this shot because of what
she saw. She's not expecting you to monkey with it.

I'd give the customer what she wants. :-)

I was at an fundraising event last weekend for the Etobicoke Humane

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

If you have a copy of Elements that includes ACR, it should load them. However,
your copy of ACR must be updated to include RAW conversion of your file type.
The catch is that Adobe doesn't provide recenet file type upgrades for old
versions of ACR. The safe bet when shooting RAW with recent Pentax DSLR cameras
is to shoot RAW DNG. However, you should be able to use Adobe's DNG converter
and convert the Pentax RAW files to DNG RAW. I think the RAW converter is a
free download.

What I typed into my google search was
sheep peso pdml

This link was amusing:
Filter Results - Sex My Web - Adult Media from the Web

I guess that sexmyweb.com does web searches for "interesting" words, and
decided Assawoman Bay was something sexy.

However this link to Derek Miller's blog:
Dogmeat Pad: May 2011

limbsandthings.typepad.com/blog/2011/05/page/15/
May 4, 2011 – ... one of my PDML colleagues recently posted a “PESO” (see PDML
+ . partner (Rene Bond) to get him in the mood by imitating a sheep, ...

looked rather intriguing, but it turns out was rather poignant. The page
starts off with:

By Derek on May 4, 2011 7:51 AM | 143 Comments | No TrackBacks
Here it is. I'm dead, and this is my last post to my blog. In advance, I asked
that once my body finally shut down from the punishments of my cancer, then my
family and friends publish this prepared message I wrote—the first part of the
process of turning this from an active website to an archive.

Who was this guy? Was he on PDML?

The relevant post in the blog starts out with:
I’d typed the first letter of some URL into the address window when I was
interrupted. Looking back a moment later, I was startled at what the
browser had assumed I wanted to visit.

So here are my A,B,C browser guesses, which I suspect say something about me.
What are yours?

and the second one was the relevant hit:
[B]eilby Fine Arts; one of my PDML colleagues recently posted a “PESO” (see
PDML + Twitter) here that I checked out.

But what's even more interesting was the first one was:
[A]ndroid Developers Blog. Not surprising, I edit it.

And when I click on that link, who do I see made the three latest posts, but
Tim Bray, also of Vancouver.

It's really weird, how small and interconnected the world is.
