I’d go a couple hundred if I weren’t reasonably well covered in the

i can vouch for this lens model; i've had one for 10 days (it was $130 shipped,
not minty, but excellent, with a metal hood and a high quality filter, via
pentaxforums), and i really enjoy it

it's intended to accompany my A 50/1.7 as my basic everyday pair of lenses, but
it hasn't come off the camera yet; color is a little different from my 50, but
not in a bad way; i haven't dissected the IQ but it seems pretty good; macro
is only 1:4, but very useful; it's a very nice lens to use if
manual-focus/auto-aperture works for you

it took me a couple of months to find one at a good price — i was also
considering an Adaptall 24/2.5 01B or 01BB (i've got a PK/A adapter); i did buy
an 01B on eBay ($110 total), but it came with a very sluggish aperture
mechanism so i sent it back for a refund; barely got to use it but i like the
focus ring of the Sigma better

sorry if someone was ready to snipe this one (but i didn't broach it)

Seller, who is a genuine guy and didn't know there was a problem, has
offered to take the camera back or give a partial refund if I keep it.
My question is, is this something easily repaired, or should I return
the camera?

Thanks for your help,

Mark Saunders

I think the top plate is quite easily removed (from memory) so you
should be able to see if it's some mechanical fault that can be easily
fixed. Electronic repairs (which will, almost invariably, be
replacements) are probably not worth it. The camera might be useful as
a spare, though, if you can negotiate a reasonable discount on the price.

Is it street photography, if there is no street?

2012-04-01 Thread Larry Colen
There are worse things than having an hour to kill, when you're two blocks from
the beach, at sunset.

I found myself taking two types of pictures, and so I split it into two sets.
In these I was practicing my street photography, trying to capture people at
the decisive moment, sometimes shooting from the waist. As such, this set may
not be as technically strong as it might be, and the composition might be
somewhere between ad hoc and random. Even so, I find these pictures rather
fun, in a frivolous way:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157629713831141/

There are several shots in here with a group of college age kids, 153-154 and
230-232. Shortly after shooting 154, I noticed one of them had a camera and
got to chatting with them. One of the girls told me her name was Cassandra, to
which I immediately replied I don't believe you. The poor girl was totally
confused and had no idea what I was talking about.

None of them particularly stand out to me. The waves coming in are probably
the nicest of the set, but each of those has a flaw. The best of them is
probably LRC46198 but that is spoiled by the intrusion into the lower
left/centre of the frame.

LRC46237 is also quite nice, but rather flat.

Put them aside for a month then look at them again. It's the sort of subject
matter that demands either a scientific approach, or a fine arts approach
(at which point it risks becoming cliched). The composition, lighting and
rendering aren't strong enough for them to be fine art.

OK, well you've set up some sort of expectation by referring to street
photography. If the people are simply compositional elements then it doesn't
really work for me because I don't get a strong sense of geometry from the
pictures or from the arrangement of the people within them. Harald Mante is
good for this approach to photography - well worth hunting down and reading

194 could be stronger if you crop right in to remove the background, leaving
just the bark, the lines and the seaweed blisters or whatever they are, but
then the lowest blister would break the edge of the frame, which would
weaken the picture. I think it also needs a bit more on the right to balance
it out. And more tonal contrast between the blisters and their background.

Hi all!

Well, I'm just absolutely beaming right now. I L.O.V.E this camera!

The first thing I noticed about it was how much more quickly it
focuses with my A 50/1.7 and how I managed to get shots with it that
I never would have gotten with my K-x. There really is no comparison.

Here's about 20 shots I grabbed today -- out of a total of 86 taken.
They're a bit redundant, unfortunately, but that's because I
couldn't make up my mind which ones I liked best. I rarely get
anywhere near that percentage in keepers from either of my other two
bodies. And I'm just astounded that anyone could possibly have a
knock against the IQ of this camera.

Anyway -- here are the results of my first outing with it:

Comments, critiques and suggestions are welcome as always. But, I

I love the first three shots (turtles and white horse)
The terrapin was the smallest I've ever seen, maybe the circumference of
a half-dollar. He's now my great-niece's pet. The horse was too much to
carry around, unfortunately.

The color in 228-247 is way too amped up for my taste.
It is a bit on the vivid side, I reckon. I did knock it down some,
believe it or not, but tried to retain the color in the background foliage.

252 is definitely a keeper, the dog shots are cute.

Thanks, Larry.

I liked the dog shots mostly because I was able to take them with a
manual prime. I couldn't have gotten those shots with my K-x. Also, I'm
a little confused that some of the reviews said the K20D wouldn't be
useful as a sports camera. Maybe not if you're looking for blazing frame
rates, but the focus detection seems excellent to me -- well beyond my
expectations.

Thanks, Joe!

I was curious what others would make of 6242, as it was my favorite of
the day. Horses can be challenging to shoot when they're as sociable as
these were. When they walk right up to you at the fence, trying to track
the focus with a manual prime can be a little tricky. I credit the
bright viewfinder and focus detection on the K20D.

Re: Which one is stronger

2012-04-01 Thread Jack Davis
Nice group, Larry! No question, I feel the beautifully weathered and washed
stump (46237) is by far the strongest image.
Since I am the reining indoor nit picking champion..I believe I'd like the
stump positioned slightly to the left. As it is now, it adds undo weight to the
headlands in the background.

I'd have to go with 194 as there seems to be a little more depth in the
dark areas to suggest more detail to my eye.

Of the whole bunch, though, my pick is 237. Wonderful texture in the

I'm wondering what they were doing with all the driftwood. If that

Well, four photo-frinds from the local camera club was on a weekend trip,
visiting the southern part of Jutland and Northern Germany. We did a lot of

I like it. I´m not so quite Torben does too :-)

Subject: focus screen adjustment shims and AF adjustment

A couple weeks ago, my cheapo split prism focusing screen came in. It doesn't
seem to focus at quite the same point as does the autofocus, but the
differences are slight.  I ran some tests and it might be slightly front
focusing:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157629575267511/

In these, I focused on the line for 6 or 15cm.   The problem could also have
to do with the ruler I used for the test target not being flat.  In any case, I
may need some focusing shims to adjust manual focus, and thought I'd ask if
anyone has extras, from buying a set, and only needing one.

I've also had problems with the camera focusing on microphones, podiums etc
rather than the person, and it's possible that rather than focusing on the
wrong thing, it's simply front focusing making it look like the wrong thing.
Someone recently posted a link to adjusting autofocus on the K-5.  A quick scan
of my saved email doesn't show it. Does anyone have the link handy?

Re: PESO - Intermission 3, Aerial view

2012-04-01 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks, Christine.  Some BW conversions are a good idea, at least in the ones
where the wood color isn't prominent.

I'm going to post #4 momentarily--I've found that single pix get more views
than galleries, and I haven't been shooting enough to have anything in reserve!

Cheers,

Hi Rick:  I looked at Intermission 1-6.  Of this group I think Intermission 1,
4, 5, and 6 are the strongest:  the geometry is stronger to my eye and the
people are in more interesting poses--the woman in 4 has a seductive pose
drawing the man closer to her, which in turn draws the viewer into the photo.
I also think these would work great in black and white with a hint of noise
reduction.   Cheers, Christine

It's a new process (PV2012). It's hard to tell if it's compelling or
not unless you try it. I find it to do way better than PV2010 in
scenes with extreme dynamic range, holding detail in clouds, pulling
up shadows without artifacts, etc. You get a 30-day free trial, so why
not see how if does on your challenging pictures?

There are several 'nice to haves' but the new feature that really
does it for me is the MAP module, that integrates GPS (geo tagging)
very nicely into Lightroom, using a Google-maps driven map.

Since I have been using the O-GPS1 device on the K5 since it came out
last year, that is quite useful for me ...

Furthermore the '2012' process seems a bit easier to work with,
less sliders, less confusion and very good control over
hightlights and shadows.

And the upgrade is reasonably priced IMHO ...

PESO: and K-5 Event

2012-04-01 Thread Jack Davis
Took a circle around the countryside in search of...???. Took half a dozen
shots really not worth the battery power and was surprised by their appearance
when I chimped them. They were all the same, gray with dark outlines
identifying the elements in the frame. As though they had been drawn on an
Etch-A-Sketch. (no, I didn't see Geo Romney anywhere in there).
Turned the camera off and on..nothing. I then removed and returned the card.
When I pulled them up, they all then appeared to be normal. Same true as I just
now downloaded them.
Anyone??

I find disheveled fence wire and weathered fence posts difficult to pass up.

I've got to believe that Ricoh Pentax Japan is not terribly overjoyed
to be implicated in this April Fools joke. It is one thing for a
company (like Google) to do an April Fools joke in its own name. It
would be quite another for a company (like Google) to do an April
Fools book about another company (like Yahoo for example). Yet that is
what Adam did to Pentax and he made a lot of consumers rather mad in
the process. Particularly given that the April Fools concept is not
necessarily understood by all cultures, I think this was an especially
dumb move.

for me:

- another huge gain in raw processor quality
- simpler, more logical image adjustment controls
- selective area edits with more options
- much better video handling, including some editing
- much better slide show module

- book production module built in to work with Blurb

and of course, support for the latest cameras in native raw formats.
works for me.

Re: Why LR 4?

2012-04-01 Thread Stan Halpin
Disclaimer: my comments are based on the first beta release of LR4.

I was excited by the inclusion of not only a good linkage to a book publisher,
but as a bonus it links to Blurb with which I have been quite pleased. The
obvious advantages of having such a linkage built into LR itself are twofold.
First, it obviates the tedious step of exporting files which then need to be
imported into Blurb's BookSmart software. Second, on a related note, it
leaves the file re-sizing/optimization job to be done within LR which
presumably is at least as good as the BookSmart software.
For me, the big DISadvantages of the Book module in LR4 [as presented in the
beta version] are also twofold. First, it is neigh on to impossible to make
quick edits to one of the included page templates. Changes are accomplished in
the Print module, with the result exported as a JPEG, which is then re-imported
into LR4. The whole process is quite bizarre in my opinion; however, if you are
comfortable with the provided templates, then this is not an issue. The second
disadvantage/limitation is that the LR4 version of an interface to Blurb
restricts you to the higher quality paper which a) is heavier; b) more
expensive; c) not any more attractive IMHO; and d) limits the number of pages
you can include in your book.

Again, my comments may be OBE. After playing quite a bit with the first release
I have not looked at any subsequent releases including the 4.0 or 4.1
commercial releases. But I have tracked comments on the official discussion
site and haven't seen anything to indicate that my concerns (shared by many
others) have been addressed.

So my bottom line is that I would not upgrade to LR4 in order to use the Book
module. There probably are other good, even compelling, reasons to upgrade, but
Book ain't it. BookSmart does a decent job and Blurb has been proactive in
making improvements; Adobe hasn't come close to matching the functionality of
BookSmart, so far.

 Hi all!

Well, I'm just absolutely beaming right now. I L.O.V.E this camera!

The first thing I noticed about it was how much more quickly it focuses with
my A 50/1.7 and how I managed to get shots with it that I never would have
gotten with my K-x. There really is no comparison.

 Here's about 20 shots I grabbed today -- out of a total of 86 taken. They're
a bit redundant, unfortunately, but that's because I couldn't make up my
mind which ones I liked best. I rarely get anywhere near that percentage in
keepers from either of my other two bodies. And I'm just astounded that
anyone could possibly have a knock against the IQ of this camera.

Anyway -- here are the results of my first outing with it:

 http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629712433629/

Comments, critiques and suggestions are welcome as always. But, I have to
say I'm pretty happy with the results given the fact that I know almost
nothing about this camera. I can't wait to get familiar with it.

RE: Is it street photography, if there is no street?

2012-04-01 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Well, it's not street photography 'cause there's no pavement, concrete,
buildings, the sort of things that differentiate streets from, say, beaches.

;-)

These are really nice beach and ocean photos, but I don't feel that the people
in the shots add much. They don't seem to be doing anything of great interest,
we're not close enough to get any of their personality and as compositional
elements, well, to me the pictures would be just as effective without them.

But hey, that's just me, what do I know?

There are worse things than having an hour to kill, when you're two blocks from
the beach, at sunset.

I found myself taking two types of pictures, and so I split it into two sets.
In these I was practicing my street photography, trying to capture people at
the decisive moment, sometimes shooting from the waist. As such, this set may
not be as technically strong as it might be, and the composition might be
somewhere between ad hoc and random. Even so, I find these pictures rather
fun, in a frivolous way:

There are several shots in here with a group of college age kids, 153-154 and
230-232. Shortly after shooting 154, I noticed one of them had a camera and
got to chatting with them. One of the girls told me her name was Cassandra, to
which I immediately replied I don't believe you. The poor girl was totally
confused and had no idea what I was talking about.
