It sometimes clicks when rolled (though not in the way the shutter control wheel does) and sometimes is silent. It isn't controlling any functions at all. Seller, who is a genuine guy and didn't know there was a problem, has offered to take the camera back or give a partial refund if I keep it. My question is, is this something easily repaired, or should I return the camera? Thanks for your help, Mark Saunders I think the top plate is quite easily removed (from memory) so you should be able to see if it's some mechanical fault that can be easily fixed. Electronic repairs (which will, almost invariably, be replacements) are probably not worth it. The camera might be useful as a spare, though, if you can negotiate a reasonable discount on the price. -- No fixed Adobe -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Is it street photography, if there is no street?
There are worse things than having an hour to kill, when you're two blocks from the beach, at sunset. I found myself taking two types of pictures, and so I split it into two sets. In these I was practicing my street photography, trying to capture people at the decisive moment, sometimes shooting from the waist. As such, this set may not be as technically strong as it might be, and the composition might be somewhere between ad hoc and random. Even so, I find these pictures rather fun, in a frivolous way: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157629713831141/ There are several shots in here with a group of college age kids, 153-154 and 230-232. Shortly after shooting 154, I noticed one of them had a camera and got to chatting with them. One of the girls told me her name was Cassandra, to which I immediately replied I don't believe you. Well, I'm just absolutely beaming right now. I L.O.V.E this camera! The first thing I noticed about it was how much more quickly it focuses with my A 50/1.7 and how I managed to get shots with it that I never would have gotten with my K-x. There really is no comparison. Here's about 20 shots I grabbed today -- out of a total of 86 taken. They're a bit redundant, unfortunately, but that's because I couldn't make up my mind which ones I liked best. I rarely get anywhere near that percentage in keepers from either of my other two bodies. And I'm just astounded that anyone could possibly have a knock against the IQ of this camera. I love the first three shots (turtles and white horse) The terrapin was the smallest I've ever seen, maybe the circumference of a half-dollar. He's now my great-niece's pet. The horse was too much to carry around, unfortunately. The color in 228-247 is way too amped up for my taste. It is a bit on the vivid side, I reckon. I did knock it down some, believe it or not, but tried to retain the color in the background foliage. 252 is definitely a keeper, the dog shots are cute. Thanks, Larry. I liked the dog shots mostly because I was able to take them with a manual prime. I couldn't have gotten those shots with my K-x. Also, I'm a little confused that some of the reviews said the K20D wouldn't be useful as a sports camera. Maybe not if you're looking for blazing frame rates, but the focus detection seems excellent to me -- well beyond my expectations. -- Walt -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: GESO: Inaugural K20D photowalk results
Thanks, Joe! I was curious what others would make of 6242, as it was my favorite of the day. Horses can be challenging to shoot when they're as sociable as these were. When they walk right up to you at the fence, trying to track the focus with a manual prime can be a little tricky. I credit the bright viewfinder and focus detection on the K20D. Re: PESO - Intermission 3, Aerial view
Hi Rick: I looked at Intermission 1-6. Of this group I think Intermission 1, 4, 5, and 6 are the strongest: the geometry is stronger to my eye and the people are in more interesting poses--the woman in 4 has a seductive pose drawing the man closer to her, which in turn draws the viewer into the photo. I also think these would work great in black and white with a hint of noise reduction. Cheers, Christine On Apr 1, 2012, at 8:11 AM, Rick Womer wrote: Thanks, Dave and Frank. RE: Is it street photography, if there is no street?
From: Larry Colen There are worse things than having an hour to kill, when you're two blocks from the beach, at sunset. The poor girl was totally confused and had no idea what I was talking about. I'm wondering what they were doing with all the driftwood. If that pyramidal structure that shows in several of the images was going to be a bonfire on the beach later that night, you missed a good opportunity. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Well, four photo-frinds from the local camera club was on a weekend trip, visiting the southern part of Jutland and Northern Germany. We did a lot of landcape photography. But during coffee brakes, I did casual portraits (snapshots) while chatting and drinking coffee. This image ocured during one of these coffee brakes - on the cafeteria at the Højer Dam. It doesn't seem to focus at quite the same point as does the autofocus, but the differences are slight. I ran some tests and it might be slightly front focusing: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157629575267511/ In these, I focused on the line for 6 or 15cm. The problem could also have to do with the ruler I used for the test target not being flat. In any case, I may need some focusing shims to adjust manual focus, and thought I'd ask if anyone has extras, from buying a set, and only needing one. I've also had problems with the camera focusing on microphones, podiums etc rather than the person, and it's possible that rather than focusing on the wrong thing, it's simply front focusing making it look like the wrong thing. Someone recently posted a link to adjusting autofocus on the K-5. A quick scan of my saved email doesn't show it. Took a circle around the countryside in search of...???. Took half a dozen shots really not worth the battery power and was surprised by their appearance when I chimped them. They were all the same, gray with dark outlines identifying the elements in the frame. As though they had been drawn on an Etch-A-Sketch. (no, I didn't see Geo Romney anywhere in there). Turned the camera off and on..nothing. I then removed and returned the card. When I pulled them up, they all then appeared to be normal. Same true as I just now downloaded them. Anyone?? It would be quite another for a company (like Google) to do an April Fools book about another company (like Yahoo for example). Yet that is what Adam did to Pentax and he made a lot of consumers rather mad in the process. Particularly given that the April Fools concept is not necessarily understood by all cultures, I think this was an especially dumb move. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

for me: - another huge gain in raw processor quality - simpler, more logical image adjustment controls - selective area edits with more options - much better video handling, including some editing - much better slide show module - GPS integration (although i rarely use it, it's nice with the iPhone and iPad images) - book production module built in to work with Blurb and of course, support for the latest cameras in native raw formats. works for me. Re: Why LR 4?
Disclaimer: my comments are based on the first beta release of LR4. I was excited by the inclusion of not only a good linkage to a book publisher, but as a bonus it links to Blurb with which I have been quite pleased. The obvious advantages of having such a linkage built into LR itself are twofold. First, it obviates the tedious step of exporting files which then need to be imported into Blurb's BookSmart software. Second, on a related note, it leaves the file re-sizing/optimization job to be done within LR which presumably is at least as good as the BookSmart software. For me, the big DISadvantages of the Book module in LR4 [as presented in the beta version] are also twofold. First, it is neigh on to impossible to make quick edits to one of the included page templates. Changes are accomplished in the Print module, with the result exported as a JPEG, which is then re-imported into LR4. The whole process is quite bizarre in my opinion; however, if you are comfortable with the provided templates, then this is not an issue. The second disadvantage/limitation is that the LR4 version of an interface to Blurb restricts you to the higher quality paper which a) is heavier; b) more expensive; c) not any more attractive IMHO; and d) limits the number of pages you can include in your book. Again, my comments may be OBE. After playing quite a bit with the first release I have not looked at any subsequent releases including the 4.0 or 4.1 commercial releases. But I have tracked comments on the official discussion site and haven't seen anything to indicate that my concerns (shared by many others) have been addressed. So my bottom line is that I would not upgrade to LR4 in order to use the Book module. There probably are other good, even compelling, reasons to upgrade, but Book ain't it. BookSmart does a decent job and Blurb has been proactive in making improvements; Adobe hasn't come close to matching the functionality of BookSmart, so far. stan On Apr 1, 2012, at 6:06 PM, Christine Aguila wrote: Lightroom 4 looks good to me: highlight/shadow recovery-a good plus, the blurb book software, and extended video support, and for $79, pretty good. Re: PESO - Christopher
Wow, Frank! That is really great. I love the way you captured the pinhole light coming through the brim of his hat onto his shoulder, the way the sun illuminates the chin whiskers, the skeptical expression on the face of the passerby, and the slightly apprehensive look on Christopher's face. I'd put that near the top of all the images I've seen you post. -- Walt On 4/1/2012 9:19 PM, frank theriault wrote: Christopher and I chatted for about 5 minutes in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood. Re: PESO: Girl in the Shower
That is pretty damned cool, Dan. The sculptor did a great job in capturing the detail in the figure, and you did a great job of capturing the detail in the shower mirror. -- Walt You didn't happen to get her number On 4/1/2012 4:47 PM, Daniel J. RE: Is it street photography, if there is no street?
Well, it's not street photography 'cause there's no pavement, concrete, buildings, the sort of things that differentiate streets from, say, beaches. ;-) These are really nice beach and ocean photos, but I don't feel that the people in the shots add much. They don't seem to be doing anything of great interest, we're not close enough to get any of their personality and as compositional elements, well, to me the pictures would be just as effective without them. But hey, that's just me, what do I know? ;-) cheers, frank What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof. -- Christopher Hitchens --- Original Message --- From: Larry Colen l...@red4est.com Sent: April 1, 2012 4/1/12 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: Is it street photography, if there is no street? The poor girl was totally confused and had no idea what I was talking about. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
