Reenactors? No, although for fun they did dress me up in an US

Have been in touch with militaria/history buffs here since I got the

goal was for my students to shoot them with the matching period
technology (i.e., glass plates/albumen for late 1800s Philippine

But its 'off-season' for those events and the reenactors takes
advantage of that by doing something different, so the European

The GXR is indeed a neat camera. I use mine most with the A12 Camera
Mount fitted to use my M-bayonet lenses, but that A12 50 Macro is a
very fine piece. There are lots and lots of subtle features.

Just don't write your custom configs to the card and then format the
card. Be sure to copy the custom configs to your computer before you
format the card...

Just a bit of a gearhead diary

2012-07-15 Thread Boris Liberman

I should and probably will make a blog entry on the matter.

Hi there!

Two days ago new toys arrived. First and foremost, Ricoh GXR with A12
50mm macro module. This is outright amazing little camera with infinite
customization and excellent ergonomics. I'd say AF is on par with K10D
which is good enough for most practical purposes while the shutter sound
is close to none - far quieter than any of my Pentaxes.

They have great deal of neat and useful features:
1. Snap focus - you click a button (can be programmed to do so on quick
and full pressing of the focus button) - the camera would focus to the
pre-defined distance and then you can take a shot.

2. Two-speed manual focus by wire - this is awesome.

3. Focus assist by focus peaking - served to you in two varieties -
highly useful. And it works in AF mode too.

4. Ability to save your camera settings to the card for later retrieval.
As a person who few times confused "Reset" with "Format" of my Pentax
camera only to curse immediately as all settings had to be re-done, this
is most useful.

Great little camera this Ricoh is. Great indeed. And in terms of
corporate, I am staying on board, obviously :-).

Also I got myself a LR 4.1. I notice no performance degradation compared
to LR 3.6. And I am about to get started on the Book module, should be fun.

So, life is pretty good in terms of photo gear.

Re: PESO - Waiting for Admission

2012-07-15 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks, Bob!

The Boston Symphony gives 3 concerts every weekend there; and there are other
concerts weeknights.  Yes, there is also a summer music school for young
musicians with professional ambitions.

Rick,
I like that.  A line without a line.
Isn't it also home to a summer music camp, perhaps your waiters.

Re: Pentax Q Price Cut

2012-07-15 Thread Steven Desjardins
With a price in the $300's, it's a nice little compact. Pentax really
got great IQ from the 1/2.3 sensor and the control layout is really
good. For these prices or cheaper, I would recommend the Q to anyone
looking for a a fun compact.

Re: a weekend with the K30

2012-07-15 Thread Jeffery Smith
I'm sort of relieved that there isn't enough rationale to get one while already
having a K5. I doubted that Pentax would ever come out with a dSLR with a
sensor that is the size of a 35mm frame (I worded that just for Paul), but if
the Q is going down, I still have a glimmer of hope.

a weekend with the K30

2012-07-15 Thread Bong Manayon
Got a chance to run around with the K30 this weekend, there is a
difference between reading specs and actually handling the camera.
One of my assumptions was it would be like downgrading from say the
K10D to the K200D or the K-m but I was pleasantly surprised that it
had the dual dials of the K-5; and except for the button layout at the
back (similar to the K-r) almost everything else was the K-5. There is
an improvement in focusing--less hunting and more precise.

GESO: Grace's Photo Net Page

2012-07-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
Grace has been dabbling with cameras off and on for years. Today, I gave her my
Panasonic P&S, and she went with me to the farmers market and the park. She
shot a lot of keepers. The first few in the folder here are full frame. Some of
the others are cropped, but she has good instincts for framing. She knows not
to center heads, for example. Didn't have to tell her that. I'm very proud of
her.

I'm not quite sure. I was in a couple of clouds of the stuff and it
tasted kind of like chalk, but didn't seem otherwise harmful. It
washes off with water, and isn't supposed to stain. Didn't hurt the
K-5 at all, like being in a mild dust storm.

While I hope it's not already being dropped, I pretty much agree with
you. If it had been this price months ago I might have bought it. When
the camera & lenses start showing up on eBay for cheap, I'll probably
get it (assuming the line is actually dropped by Pentax). It'll look
good next to my Auto110 set.

Hi Everyone:

What a wonderful trip Darrel and I had this past June, and I think the 8 nicest
people in all of the UK are, in fact, our UK PDMLers and their family members.

As to the trip, Darrel and I flew into Heathrow and stayed in London for 2
days, then took the boat to Greenwich to visit with Bob W.  over the weekend.
He is a well informed and wonderfully fun tour guide, and at one point I told
him he could probably do this for a living.  He's that good.  We tramped around
Greenwich and Deptford and had a blast--taking pictures all the way.  Cotty and
Alma joined us for dinner on Saturday night and as all of you can well imagine,
Cotty's wonderful sense of humor and charm kept us all in good humor and
laughter.  It was a great night, and I shan't ever forget it!

>From Greenwich, Darrel and I caught the train to Cambridge and tramped around
>the colleges, did the tour of King's College Chapel, and just walked and
>walked, and drank ale, and relaxed.

Then it was by bus to Milton Keynes to visit with Chris Mitchell and his wife
Karin.  What a fantastic time we had visiting and seeing the sights there.  The
Grand Juncture Canal was fantastic and the four of us visited some sites from
the UK's National Trust program, which is just fantastic.  Very impressive.
Darrel and I had such a blast visiting with the Mitchells.  Chris sang, and
he's fantastic.

Then the four of us, Darrel & I and the Mitchells drove to Newcastle area to
meet up with Bob W., Mike Wilson, his wife Cath, and their daughter Katy.  The
area here is absolutely beautiful, and Mike Wilson planned an itinerary that
was just fantastic. I think we'd all agree the high point was when we crossed
the dunes and found ourselves on Holy Island.  Wow!  Wait till you see
everyone's pictures from here, and the other sites visited.  They're really fun!

>From Newcastle we all said good-by, and Darrel & I headed back south to catch
>a flight out of Heathrow.

We traveled for 12 days, every two days on the move.  As I've already said to
our UK PDMLers, Darrel and I found kindness, generosity, humor, and friendship
in abundance, and we're very grateful.  We send xxoo across the pond.

When in the Greenwich area, Bob W. took us to the Deptford St. Market.  Here's
a little gallery from that leg of the trip.  Bob will post his gallery. His
gallery is much better, but here's a little taste of the market--wonderfully
multicultural!

While I like them both, I think the color version shows the open tones
on the black monolith to the left. The B&W may be more abstract if
that was your goal. It also might be a tougher call in a print.

Yep the dpbestflow site is a great source of information. It was put
together by the ASMP with a grant from the Library of Congress. I went
to an ASMP presentation on it and came away very impressed. Keep in

PESO - Feeding kiss (an alternative to extension for macro)

2012-07-15 Thread Jostein Øksne
There was some exchange on the list about macro photography and extension a
few days ago. Personally I prefer to use stacked lenses for magnification
beyond 1X. Here's one I took today, using the 645D, and a 150mm lens stacked
with a reversed 75mm. The magnification of this combo is 2X. That's about as
much as I can cope with when working handheld.

The image is severely cropped, but the motif gives you an idea of the
possibilities in the field with this kind of setup.

Image only: http://turl.no/kz3
In blog: http://alunfoto.blogspot.no/2012/07/feeding-kiss.html

One reason why I prefer stacking over other solutions is that exposure
automation keeps working. So you don't have to stop down the lens manually.

Another reason is that P-TTL keeps working. Well, sort of; you have to
diffuse the flash to avoid overexposure because of the short working
distance, but that's okay because you really don't want specular highlights
and sharp shadows anyway.

And if you're patient, you might actually make AF working. But you have to
keep the camera very steady. :-)

The knack is to find to lenses that go well together. According to John Shaw
(Book; "closeups in nature"), lenses in the normal range are best for
reversing, and moderate tele lenses best for attaching to the camera.

Personally I recommend using a tele lens with IF because it makes working
distance more predictable.

The area
here is absolutely beautiful, and Mike Wilson planned an itinerary that was just
fantastic. I think we'd all agree the high point was when we crossed the dunes and
found ourselves on Holy Island. Wow! Wait till you see everyone's pictures from
here, and the other sites visited.

Re: My Photo Management Crossroads

2012-07-15 Thread Christine Aguila

On Jul 11, 2012, at 6:32 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote:

> True. But is the scattered backup a function of Lightroom?

No, it's more a function of the user in my view, Paul. I freely admit I have
gaps in my Lightroom knowledge and bad photo management habits.

There are other factors as well. Within the last year, I switched from a PC
(it crashed after heavy use for 6 years) to Mac: iPhone, iPad, and iMac, and
I'm still learning the new hardware and software. Then I upgraded to Lightroom
4, then the previously mentioned external hard drive crashed, then I discovered
that my two external drives are less identical in folder organization than I
thought, so I'm a bit overwhelmed here with technology changes.

On top of all this, I'm at a funny stage in my life and photographically--a
kind of transition phase. I want to clear stuff out--get rid of the proverbial
stuff--and this includes my photos. In many respects, this might be a good
time to deal with the photo management issue because I can multitask this
problem: get a good management and workflow going and get rid of non-keepers,
and better organize those categories of photos I care most about, then move on.

In terms of storage, I miss the analogue days: you had a box of negatives and
a box of prints. Neither was immune from damage, but in terms of management it
was much easier. With digital, well, everyone knows the score there.

So, don't blame Lightroom! :-)

Geso Eldred King trail walk

2012-07-15 Thread David J Brooks
Morning all.

Saturday, there was an organized walk around on of the forest trails
of the York Region trail system, held by the Region and hosted by two
local pro photographer's and trail experts.
One group was for more beginner camera folk and one for more advanced.
A few of our camera club members were in attendance for the 2 km walk.
A number of stops were made to learn about the aspects of the forests
(this area was a replant due to deforestation 150 years ago or so) and
to practice the various light conditions a forest can give.

http://www.caughtinmotion.com/2012-forest/album/index.html

Took about 135 photos can narroed them down to a group of about 25 or so.

K-5 with DA F 50-200, IR photos using the Canon G3 converted camera.

Well it did me when I shot it, but more the reflection of it in the
buildings windows and the geometry - and yet I kind of just pointed up

interesting and I hadn't taken any photos recently ;-)

I like the bw version better because it has an aura of being a bit
ominous and that reflects my opinion of buildings of this sort...
well at least it isn't boring

Re: Peso - Manhattan Minimalism II - the black and white version

2012-07-15 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Interesting..
I darkened the black area a bit to make sure it was totally featureless
and black , actually. I couldnt see any detail in it at all, although
when I went to use the magic wand in elements apparently the program did
as it selected two sections of the black mass.

I still can't see anything but black there in the photo as it is now.
But then, I don't have the brightness of my monitor set at 100 - because
I can't look at it at all if I do and when the power was getting

browned out last week it flickered. I upped it to 100 and think i see
what you mean.

If you can see that, I guess I should put it back in elements :-)
