I can agree with you there, being relatively conservative by Norwegians
standards. One reason why republikanske are not very popular around here is
that they usually don't seam to know much about the world outside the US. And
in the previous election they used Skandinavia as an example of a system they
didn't want :-)

Just wanted to share a small gallery of images I shot on my

with my FA 50/1.4 and my K100 with my Promaster 70-300/4-5.6:

Most of the shots are of subject matter I've shot many times before, but

Re: FA135 service story and advice needed

2012-11-07 Thread Boris Liberman
I think it may be worth your while to contact someone from US of A as
the idea that FA 135 cannot be fixed for the problem you're having
sounds very strange to me.

On 11/7/2012 4:54 PM, Krisjanis Linkevics wrote:

Some of you might remember my FA135 that a moth took hostage. Long
story short there is a dead moth right behind the back element. If
nothing else, it is messing with focusing, so I would very much like
to get rid of its carcas and debris.

So half a year ago I went to my local Pentax dealer and the lens was
sent off to be "fixed". After long travels to the Czech Republic and
Germany it finally came back today. Nobody has even tried to take it
apart. They say they can't fix it.

So my question is - do I try to take it apart or give it to some
local repairman to attempt a repair? I haven't seen any schematics
floating around and have no idea what it would take to remove the
back element but I have about as much trust in a nondescript repair
shop in a basement somewhere as I do in my own fingers.

Re: Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM drops, but it's for Art use only

2012-11-07 Thread Boris Liberman
I think it is quite a bargain really. As of recently Sigma has been
producing optically excellent lenses. Add to that that this is a full
frame lens and further I think it is the first in industry that has USB
port that according to promo on dpreview.com will allow not just
changing lens firmware but also things such as micro focus adjustment.

So in terms of technology for the money I think this is a fair offering.

Almost more important is Sigma's new clever marketing angle for this
very expensive ($900) bauble: they are creating new use-based "lines"
for their lenses and this one is being labelled "Art".

"As the first lens released under Sigma’s new Art line, it will
feature a new matte finish and overall new design concept, which
includes a clearly defined category label on every new lens."

I for one cannot wait to see what gets released under the Decisive
Moment line. Or what about the Undraped Women line?

What if you try using a Landscape line lens for birds? Maybe a large
red circle with a diagonal line appears in your viewfinder.

Subject: My First PESO - 30 years late

To the best of my knowledge, I've never submitted a PESO. But today, I was
testing a new scanner and pulled out an old notebook of slide sleeves from
pictures I took in Brasil almost 30 years ago and came across this picture
of Rio de Janeiro. It's not a great picture and I just happened to be at
this location at this time so I can't even claim much intent, but it warmed
my heart for a few reasons:

1) For some reason, I didn't originally care enough for the picture to
remember taking it. The slide was a little darker than this which is
probably the reason. Now I get to rediscover it.
2) It revived a memory.
3) I took it with my first "real" camera, my Pentax K-1000. Since then
I've owned a P-3N, ZX-5N, *ist-D, K-7 and a K-5. I still love that K-1000
most of all even though the K-5 is a much more practical tool for my needs
and entertainment now. I still love to hear the shutter of the K-1000. It
has such a satisfying mechanical combination of a click and a clunk. The
K-1000 now sits, retired, on a shelf over my desk, in a collection of things
that are special to me. I bought the camera with a bag, flash and a
50mm/1.8 lens in 1982 from a guy entering journalism school which required
everyone to have a specific model of camera.
4) I was too poor for a tripod so I know I took the picture handheld.

So, for those of you who still hold that emotional attachment to your
K-1000, or LX or ME-Super I'd like to share this oldie from my K-1000.

G'day Trendsetters,

I had a bit of a shoot with one of my favorite models last weekend.
Here is one of the images:

Single strobe with a beauty dish, high camera left. Shot on the D800

Enjoy, and as always, comments & critiques welcome.

2012-11-07 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
For six weeks I'm carrying my camera at work, and really I'm just not getting
much street stuff.

Except bike messengers. I'm getting loads of photos of my confreres, many of
which I am quite satisfied with. I've shown a few of them but have been
resisting showing too many as I recognize that not all of you are bikies.

Well, no more. I'm going with the flow.

Accordingly, here's Toronto messenger Craig with a Curbside Smile:

Re: PESO: Bolting

2012-11-07 Thread Walt

Thanks again, Bruce.

I was actually panning with the more distant horse when the nearest one
decided to bolt. It was the motion blur of the near horse contrasted
against the stopped action of the far horse that initially got my
attention and made me decide to see if I could rescue it from its
colors. (Aside from the blandness, I'm not crazy about the slapdash
presence of green here and there in the color version.)

And, once I discovered that the filtered b/w helped to obscure the
barbed wire, getting rid of it was a piece of cake. :)

I've never held this lens before, but rear elements are generally the
easiest to remove; I've removed quite a few in order to get to oily
aperture blades.

I'd REALLY like to see a photo of the dead moth! :-)

Re: Mini- Geso - 5 pics from last few days

2012-11-07 Thread Ann Sanfedele

I"m just awaking from my 2nd nap of the day... now it is _sNOWING_ outside!

Almost afraid to mention I have power - don't wan't to tempt providence!

Ok - a totally non-partisan story about the shot

Having my camera with me saved me from utter boredom standing in the
line that snaked around a corner at my polling place that used be
annoying only for the confusion of traffic once inside.

My neighbor reported she went very early and it was 2 1/2 hours before
she got to vote. I went mid mornign and it was only an hour... the

fancy stuff on the walls is from a coffee place called "the Bean" .
I suggested to anyone who would listen that it might be nice to do
a straw poll to see how many in line were actually voting in the proper
place.

(For those who had not seen the news about this, The Gov (who I like a
lot) made an order (that could have been sooner) that if one couldnt
get to their normal polling place because it had been washed away in the
storm, simply had no power, or if they were staying a few miles
away because they had no power which meant no heat or lights or water
even in some cases, they could go to ANy polling place, sign an
affidavit and be issued a special ballot. )

anyway, the person directly behind me spoke no English (Ukranian about
my age) the person in front of me was a 40'ish guy who had both ears
implanted with I-pod pods, the guy behind the ukranian didnt even look
up - he was using his laptop and wi-fi). Usually, in long lines in NY

people are glad to chat. Sigh. NOt even a smile cracked at my suggestion...

BUT - I had camera and shadows to play with...

The umbrella shot might be my fave, but that's becuase I was
here and the Halloween "danger bones" ad near them was my kind of irony.
There was no power - that was the first full day of no power in my part
of town... No traffic, nothing open - and I liked the orange, green and
purple from the color wheel.

anyway- I babble because I've just awoken from a nap, there is my own
cooking to consume shortly and I can once again play words with friends
because I have my right eye back in almost full operating condition! - I
suppose I shouldnt strain it though.

thanks to all of you who liked my non-stormish storm shots - past
present and future.

Re: GESO: Election Day Photowalk 2012 (6 photos)

2012-11-07 Thread Walt

Thanks, Bob.

Unfortunately, there just wasn't much to work with as it relates to an
Election Day theme. I didn't see a single yard sign, nor any other
election-related subject matter the entire time I was out. But for the
flag and sign outside the polling place, you'd have never known it was
going on.

So, I decided to do what I could with what I had. So, it does capture
the scene in that respect. It's just that the scene didn't lend itself
to the theme.

I'm not sure you realize the economics involved in the design and
manufacture of something as complex as a camera sensor. In order to
recoup the costs, or achieve economies of scale that make the
individual component price "reasonable" you generally need to
manufacture more components than you can use/sell yourself. To NOT do
it that way is to follow the Foveon sensor business model and you can
see the resulting price disadvantage that they are under.

Production of a new design takes time to ramp up quantities, so Sony
can have a competitive advantage in the marketplace, getting their own
brand of cameras that use the sensor to market before allowing other
brands to make use of it (or even when they allow others R&D to see
its specifications).

Re: More free Nik Software?

2012-11-07 Thread John Sessoms

From: Darren Addy

I had a feeling that would be the case. I do web work and know how you
can often "recycle" code and miss stuff that gets inappropriately
carried across. In this case, I suspect that when HDR Efex Pro 2 was
released, Nik sent people who had JUST purchased the previous version
(like within the last 60-90 days < pure guess) to upgrade for free
rather than hit them up for more money so quickly after their original
purchase. The Google + Nik guy took that email code and changed the
image used in the header, but forgot about the ALT attribute in the
image tag. As someone correctly noted earlier, you only see that:
a) if you read it before the image loads (it serves a placeholder
descriptive text)
b) you mouseover the image and read it in a tooltip box that pops up
on your screen
or
c) you are sight impaired and use an audio "reader". It is the text
that gets read to you that should in some way describe the image you
can't see (assuming the designer is concerned about "accessibility
issues").

While I knew it (the "you qualify for free software statement") was
probably an error in this email, I also knew that it was an error that
they would probably have to honor. I figured that a low enough
percentage of people would notice it, or take the necessary action to
benefit from it that it would not be that costly for them (expecially
as compared to the negative attention that refusing to honor it might
bring them). Also, they could afford it. Finally, it helps them in the
long run because every user of software (no matter how it is obtained,
including illegally) becomes a future upgrade customer and thus part
of the companies future revenue stream.

I just didn't want to keep the news to myself, and so shared it with
the class. Glad to hear that those who were interested enough were
able to take advantage of the offer.
: )

I wonder if they will consider themselves bound to honor the statement
for me, since I had to search the web page source code to find it?

FA135 service story and advice needed

2012-11-07 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
Some of you might remember my FA135 that a moth took hostage. Long story short
there is a dead moth right behind the back element. If nothing else, it is
messing with focusing, so I would very much like to get rid of its carcas and
debris.

So half a year ago I went to my local Pentax dealer and the lens was sent off
to be "fixed". After long travels to the Czech Republic and Germany it finally
came back today. Nobody has even tried to take it apart. They say they can't
fix it.

So my question is - do I try to take it apart or give it to some local
repairman to attempt a repair? I haven't seen any schematics floating around
and have no idea what it would take to remove the back element but I have about
as much trust in a nondescript repair shop in a basement somewhere as I do in
my own fingers.
