OT: Challenge Wanaka on UK Channel 4

2013-03-30 Thread David Mann
In case anybody's interested, I've just heard that Channel 4 in the UK will be
screening a 30 minute programme featuring the 2013 Challenge Wanaka race at
7:30am Sunday 7th April (who the hell is awake at that time on a Sunday?).

I did the half-distance race and it was... fun... in hindsight ;) So much fun
that I've entered for next years full distance race.

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/triathlon/episode-guide/series-4/episode-2

It'll be worth watching just for the scenery. And very expensive bikes.

Cheers,

The lock on my mailbox broke and had to be replaced. It struck me as
something that could be used as an example of a broken pattern.

I've played with it a bit and looked at it until I'm cross-eyed. I
can't tell if it's straight and level or a tiny bit crooked. I'm also
not sure about the composition. The lock on box 7 is dead-center in
the frame, I don't think I like that. Maybe a rectangular crop
eliminating the top row of boxes might look better.

Is this worth the trouble to mess with or is it one of those camera
club photos that no-one but a photographer would look at?

Thanks for the nudge Ken. I've tried before, and failed, to learn how to use a
polarizer. I fiddle and turn the ring and occasionally see some change in

I like the shot and actually prefer the second tighter crop. For one thing the
tighter closer view helps the viewer see more of the subtle texture on the
metal surfaces of doors and locks. But I think the second crop could be
improved if you moved the right edge one way or the other. I would have the
edge a) bisect the locks, b) hide the locks, or c) show the locks completely,
but with no space further to the right.

Yea, I hadn't heard of the stutter step either. Trust me, it takes practice.

As to help, well, I need something to jettison Darrel and me out of this orbit
of negative karma we're stuck in. We just keep getting hit with one challenge
after another. All people go through bad patches; I get that, and the only
thing to do is gut it out and get through it--and, trust me, we aim to do just
that. It's just a tough time we'll have to face and march through.

Cheers, Christine

I just had to find out what was meant by stutter step and located this

Quite interesting to me as a total nube on the subject.

 Hi Everyone:

Darrel I watched a nice PBS video tonight entitled American Photography:
A Century of Images. It's a nice sweeping overview of the photograph
(1900-2000) and its impact on life, history et al. The commentary by art
and photography historians is good, and it was still fun to revisit all the
iconic images you'd expect to see from the 20th century. I recommend it
for those who haven't seen it already.

I also just finished the book The Essentials of Street Photography by James
Maher, which was also worth a read. Divided into 4 parts, it covers the
conceptual and technical considerations of street photography as well as
the editing process. It then finishes with interviews with Matt Weber, Blake
Andrews, Mike Peters, Richard Bram, Jay Maisel, and Dave Beckerman.
Maisel's work is amazing. You can see his work here if you're interested
www.jaymaisel.com . Also included in the book are some pretty good
exercises. Today, on the way to the subway I had the camera in hand and
practiced the stutter step with not much success, I think. I do think the
book may be too basic for many on the list, but for me it was just what I
needed to lift my photographic spirits so to speak--even if for just a
little while. Life really sucks at the moment.

I haven't forgotten PAW; I have the frames on my camera for the last 3 or 4
weeks; I just haven't had the time--or the interest--to get them on the
computer and processed, and I took some photos today, but more to practice
the stutter step then to actually photograph something, but I'm on spring
break now and despite all the work I have to confront during break, I'm
determined to find an afternoon to have a proper photo walk.

I certainly haven't forgotten about you guys, and I know I'll be more active
soon. I just need a bit more time to get through this really bad patch life
has made for me and Darrel.

Big cheers and I'll probably pop back on the list later in the week.
 Christine

Stan, on a lot of subjects, a polarizer just 'enhances' the colors, I
generally get the most effect on water shots to tone down/eliminate

Thanks for the nudge Ken. I've tried before, and failed, to learn how to
use a polarizer. I fiddle and turn the ring and occasionally see some
change in brightness but that is about it. I hauled out my small
collection of filters a month ago, mounted a polarizer with the intent of
using the damn thing, took it off about 5 minutes later. Maybe I'll go
re-do the flower shots.

The Heron may be here for the summer but is probably passing through.
The Robin is quite definitely here for the duration, so not really a

based on previous years. Maybe they are settling in as well.

Spring Flowers: http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p184708921
A Snowdrop (I know, Paul already posted one of these but he is 100 miles

All shot with the DA*200/4.0 Macro. It was nice to pull this one out of

Re: PESO - mailbox - interrupted pattern

2013-03-30 Thread John Sessoms

Without your description I wouldn't have known what you were trying to
show in the photo.

If the one box were completely missing its lock, that might make it more
compelling, in which case a wider shot showing more boxes would
establish the pattern a bit more forcefully.

Box locks are held in by just a nut or a clip. You could take it out
long enough to make your shot. But you might not want to do that.

From: George Sinos

I need a little feedback on this one. I'm not sure it's worth pursuing.

http://www.georgesphotos.net/Other/Misc-private/1804874_X84PMn#!i=2431403562k=nbGb2Bdlb=1s=A

Thanks for any input, gs.

Probably not in the USA. It might not be illegal in the Eurozone.

You might get usable software or you might not. You certainly won't get
support from Adobe you probably won't have any leverage to get your
money back if it turns out to be a rip off.

Re: Very Cheap Adone (Photoshop) licenses - is this legal?

2013-03-30 Thread John Sessoms

You can still do that. It's more common to buy OEM Windoze along with a
hard-drive or a mother board rather than such minor parts.

I was able to buy Windoze 7 Pro 64-bit OEM version when I was building
my new Photoshop computer last year.

From: David Parsons

OEM software means that you buy the software with hardware. It's
legal to buy in the US too. The website though is a total scam.

One thing that legit sellers used to do back in the day was to sell
you OEM versions of Office or Windows with a fan or blank drive panel,
or even a screw. This was a long time ago, and that doesn't happen
anymore.

it probably depends on where you are. I think that in the EU it's ok to buy
OEM software (disclaimer: this is an opinion - not legal advice!).

However, whether the software advertised as OEM really is, or whether it's a
pirate copy, or whether there is any software at all rather than just a
means of taking your credit card details, is something else entirely.

Caveat emptor.

Plus, I don't think Adobe *ever* did OEM software. When did anyone
ever buy a computer with Photoshop pre-installed?

Some earlier versions of Photoshop might have come bundled or preloaded.

When I bought my Nikon CoolScan IV ED, Adobe Photoshop 5 Limited Edition
came bundled with it. Came in the box as a CD since the CoolScan didn't
have any capacity to have software preloaded on it.

It was not upgradable to Photoshop 7 when I bought that version in 2004,
but I don't know if that was because it was too far down-level by the
time I wanted to upgrade or if it had never been upgradable.

Seems to me it *should* have been upgradable to the regular version of
Photoshop 5 while that was still the current version, which should then
subsequently have been upgradable to Photoshop 6, Photoshop 7

... but I don't know if it ever was.

Funny effect on the wings.
Pentax has a telephoto macro on the lens road map. For now I'm happy

with this setup (no shadow from the lens). I build a flash diffuser.

Tried the AF200FG with a diffusor on the Q. It's better but heavy
compared to the camera/lens. maybe a flash bracket helps but it all
adds volume. Let's hope Pentax designs a little PTTL flash for the Q
which works with the future macro lens.

which is not a big deal but you have to redo anything you have
customized. Apparently the download link to the v1.11 update is still
active, but it looks like a v1.12 (or maybe v1.111) is int he works.

Re: Q Macro Tests and Rolling Shutter Distortion

2013-03-30 Thread Mark C
Your approach is certainly much more elegant than what I tried. The
Raynox on the 06 telephoto zoom retains the compactness of the overall Q
kit. Do you have any sample images taken through the Raynox? I had
initially considered this approach but was concerned about the Q's AF
and the 06 zoom - it was pretty slow without a closeup diopter and I
worried it it would be too slow with one. I tested the Q and 0y with a
reverse mounted 50mm and had major problems getting AF to work, but when
it did the results were great. The v 1.11 firmware seems to address the
AF issue with the original Q and the 06 telephoto - it is quite fast
even in dim light - so the Raynox is looking appealing. Your flash
diffuser is a great idea as well! A Q sized P-TTL flash would also be great.

The Bolt Ring Light and M 50mm macro has potential, but clearly not for
flying insects. I am also looking forward to using the Bolt on the K-5
for general macro shooting, more int he area of fill light than anything
else.

http://www.repiuk.nl/index.php/blog-mainmenu-97/248-q-macro

Tried the AF200FG with a diffusor on the Q. It's better but heavy
compared to the camera/lens. maybe a flash bracket helps but it all
adds volume. Let's hope Pentax designs a little PTTL flash for the Q
which works with the future macro lens.

I assume these were hand held. I find it very difficult to hand hold

Re: GESOs: Birds and Flowers

I spent an hour or two today playing with filters. Concentrated on the spring
flowers.
All of my Polarizer attempts were crap. Using an enhancing filter wasn't much
better. I did get a couple of additional shots of the Snow Drops and Crocus, so
the Spring Flowers GESO is slightly expanded. For a definitive Snow Drop, look
at Paul's image. But mine do capture that Spring flavor.

PESO: Bellbird

2013-03-30 Thread David Mann
I was very lucky today. A bellbird came to visit our garden. I see one here
maybe once or twice a year. They tend to hang out closer to the hills, about
2km away. They're quite skittish and I've had the AF motor of my camera scare
one off before. Today I kept my distance and managed to get a photo.

This is a fairly heavy crop. It's also had some Shadow / Highlight treatment
to bring out his plumage. It's a touch noisy as I shot at 800ISO due to poor
light.

K10D, FA*400mm f/5.6.

Cheers,
Dave
