OT: Challenge Wanaka on UK Channel 4
In case anybody's interested, I've just heard that Channel 4 in the UK will be screening a 30 minute programme featuring the 2013 Challenge Wanaka race at 7:30am Sunday 7th April (who the hell is awake at that time on a Sunday?). I did the half-distance race and it was... fun... in hindsight ;) So much fun that I've entered for next years full distance race. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/triathlon/episode-guide/series-4/episode-2 It'll be worth watching just for the scenery. Re: PESO - mailbox - interrupted pattern
I like the shot and actually prefer the second tighter crop. For one thing the tighter closer view helps the viewer see more of the subtle texture on the metal surfaces of doors and locks. But I think the second crop could be improved if you moved the right edge one way or the other. I would have the edge a) bisect the locks, b) hide the locks, or c) show the locks completely, but with no space further to the right. stan On Mar 30, 2013, at 9:43 AM, George Sinos wrote: Thanks Bob and Don - I'll let it sit on the drive for a while and go back to it with a fresh eye. at worst as good a Thomas Hawk posting That's hilarious. Re: Interesting Photo Video other what not
Yea, I hadn't heard of the stutter step either. Trust me, it takes practice. As to help, well, I need something to jettison Darrel and me out of this orbit of negative karma we're stuck in. We just keep getting hit with one challenge after another. All people go through bad patches; I get that, and the only thing to do is gut it out and get through it--and, trust me, we aim to do just that. It's just a tough time we'll have to face and march through. Cheers, Christine On Mar 26, 2013, at 9:34 AM, Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for the great recommendations Christine. Cheers! On Tue, Mar 26, 2013 at 12:29 AM, Christine Aguila christ...@caguila.com wrote: Hi Everyone: Darrel I watched a nice PBS video tonight entitled American Photography: A Century of Images. It's a nice sweeping overview of the photograph (1900-2000) and its impact on life, history et al. The commentary by art and photography historians is good, and it was still fun to revisit all the iconic images you'd expect to see from the 20th century. I recommend it for those who haven't seen it already. I also just finished the book The Essentials of Street Photography by James Maher, which was also worth a read. Divided into 4 parts, it covers the conceptual and technical considerations of street photography as well as the editing process. It then finishes with interviews with Matt Weber, Blake Andrews, Mike Peters, Richard Bram, Jay Maisel, and Dave Beckerman. Maisel's work is amazing. You can see his work here if you're interested www.jaymaisel.com . Also included in the book are some pretty good exercises. Today, on the way to the subway I had the camera in hand and practiced the stutter step with not much success, I think. I do think the book may be too basic for many on the list, but for me it was just what I needed to lift my photographic spirits so to speak--even if for just a little while. Life really sucks at the moment. I haven't forgotten PAW; I have the frames on my camera for the last 3 or 4 weeks; I just haven't had the time--or the interest--to get them on the computer and processed, and I took some photos today, but more to practice the stutter step then to actually photograph something, but I'm on spring break now and despite all the work I have to confront during break, I'm determined to find an afternoon to have a proper photo walk. I certainly haven't forgotten about you guys, and I know I'll be more active soon. I just need a bit more time to get through this really bad patch life has made for me and Darrel. Re: PESO - mailbox - interrupted pattern
Without your description I wouldn't have known what you were trying to show in the photo. If the one box were completely missing its lock, that might make it more compelling, in which case a wider shot showing more boxes would establish the pattern a bit more forcefully. Box locks are held in by just a nut or a clip. You could take it out long enough to make your shot. But you might not want to do that. From: George Sinos I need a little feedback on this one. I'm not sure it's worth pursuing. http://www.georgesphotos.net/Other/Misc-private/1804874_X84PMn#!i=2431403562k=nbGb2Bdlb=1s=A The lock on my mailbox broke and had to be replaced. It struck me as something that could be used as an example of a broken pattern. I've played with it a bit and looked at it until I'm cross-eyed. I can't tell if it's straight and level or a tiny bit crooked. I'm also not sure about the composition. The lock on box 7 is dead-center in the frame, I don't think I like that. Maybe a rectangular crop eliminating the top row of boxes might look better. Is this worth the trouble to mess with or is it one of those camera club photos that no-one but a photographer would look at? Re: Very Cheap Adone (Photoshop) licenses - is this legal?
You can still do that. It's more common to buy OEM Windoze along with a hard-drive or a mother board rather than such minor parts. I was able to buy Windoze 7 Pro 64-bit OEM version when I was building my new Photoshop computer last year. From: David Parsons OEM software means that you buy the software with hardware. It's legal to buy in the US too. The website though is a total scam. One thing that legit sellers used to do back in the day was to sell you OEM versions of Office or Windows with a fan or blank drive panel, or even a screw. Re: Geso Q picks
Nice shots, Don. The print of the street scene is very nice. That and the yellow flowers are my favorites. Glad to hear that Pentax got it repaired! Replacing the circuit board is not a minor fix... I just did some checking and found a post on PF that translates a message from Pentax Japan saying that they found a bug in the firmware... Other than the rolling shutter distortions I posted about I have not had any problems after the upgrade, and I can't blame the firmware for the rolling shutter effect. It *does* reset *everything* which is not a big deal but you have to redo anything you have customized. Apparently the download link to the v1.11 update is still active, but it looks like a v1.12 (or maybe v1.111) is int he works. Re: Q Macro Tests and Rolling Shutter Distortion
Your approach is certainly much more elegant than what I tried. The Raynox on the 06 telephoto zoom retains the compactness of the overall Q kit. Do you have any sample images taken through the Raynox? I had initially considered this approach but was concerned about the Q's AF and the 06 zoom - it was pretty slow without a closeup diopter and I worried it it would be too slow with one. I tested the Q and 0y with a reverse mounted 50mm and had major problems getting AF to work, but when it did the results were great. The v 1.11 firmware seems to address the AF issue with the original Q and the 06 telephoto - it is quite fast even in dim light - so the Raynox is looking appealing. Your flash diffuser is a great idea as well! A Q sized P-TTL flash would also be great. The Bolt Ring Light and M 50mm macro has potential, but clearly not for flying insects. I am also looking forward to using the Bolt on the K-5 for general macro shooting, more int he area of fill light than anything else. - Mark On 3/30/2013 3:04 PM, Toine wrote: Funny effect on the wings. Re: Geso Q picks
Quoting Don Guthrie shark50...@gmail.com: I got my Q back from repair in AZ yesterday. The repair slip said they recharged the battery (duh) replaced the upper PCB and cleaned the sensor. Well it works so no complaint. They reset it to factory defaults. I tried to update to latest firmware today but the web site says 1.11 Not available I was surprised how much I missed it. It was my carry everywhere camera that I certainly preferred to my cel phone. I liked it most when I had some decent glass on using the Fotodiox adapter.. My favorite being the SMC M 28mm F2.8. Here are a few test shots taken today with this combo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/valdon/sets/72157633120517150/ http://flic.kr/s/aHsjEwDVK5 Very nice selection. The M 28 looks to be a good fit for the Q. I assume these were hand held. I find it very difficult to hand hold steadily with anything other than the dedicated Q lenses. But it's early days and I haven't yet put any serious effort into using third party lenses via adapters. -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: GESOs: Birds and Flowers
I spent an hour or two today playing with filters. Concentrated on the spring flowers. All of my Polarizer attempts were crap. Using an enhancing filter wasn't much better. I did get a couple of additional shots of the Snow Drops and Crocus, so the Spring Flowers GESO is slightly expanded. For a definitive Snow Drop, look at Paul's image. But mine do capture that Spring flavor. stan On Mar 30, 2013, at 12:07 PM, kwal...@peoplepc.com kwal...@peoplepc.com wrote: Stan, on a lot of subjects, a polarizer just 'enhances' the colors, I generally get the most effect on water shots to tone down/eliminate reflections from the water. OT - Photographers can clone their own work
Photographers across the country can breathe a sigh of relief. PESO: Bellbird
I was very lucky today. A bellbird came to visit our garden. I see one here maybe once or twice a year. They tend to hang out closer to the hills, about 2km away. They're quite skittish and I've had the AF motor of my camera scare one off before. Today I kept my distance and managed to get a photo. http://www.multi.net.nz/bellbird/ This is a fairly heavy crop. It's also had some Shadow / Highlight treatment to bring out his plumage. It's a touch noisy as I shot at 800ISO due to poor light. K10D, FA*400mm f/5.6.
