Pseudo-HDR treatment (it's tone mapped from a single exposure). Lots
of tweaking with masks, selective noise reduction and other tricks to
make look more like an illustration than a photograph.

Notes:

1/2-second exposure obtained without a tripod by bracing camera

I love the sneakers hanging over the phone lines in the upper

I'd try applying a red filter preset during the conversion to

PESO - Ken-san

Toronto seems to be attracting quite a few Japanese messengers lately. First
Kota then Moto (who's still here) and now Ken.

Here he is doing his first Alley Cat (messenger race) a couple of weeks ago at

Just havin' a bit of fun. Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

related apps (geo-tagging photos also)

The tethering thing is something I don't get. The K5, and I am sure the
K5II, as well as the K7 and K20 before this were fully capable of tethering.
The camera supports it already. All Pentax needs to do is implement it with
some software.
Tethering to a smart phone would be cool though.

Tethering in the "studio" sense is missing: you cannot download images
to a previewing screen (eg Lightroom) like you can with all MF cameras
(Hassy, Phase One) and many FF's (Nikon, Canon).

Tethering in terms of remote control of shutter and other features, is
available, yes.
Fair enough. It isn't much more than a wired remote release the way it
is implemented by PkTether. I suspect Pentax hasn't bothered to rewrite
that part of the code since the *istD and that is all the camera is
capable of in this respect..

Image-download tethering is a highly desirable feature. I've tried to
do it with an Eye-Fi SD card but it's just too slow. I'd love to hear
that the Asian Flu card works.

For myself, studio tethering would be nice. I don't mind having to wait
until after the shoot to download the card, but if the being able to
fully tether to a smart phone is true, they've got me, no matter what
else the thing does.

With the K-01/K-30 on they seemed to have changed the firmware enough

The tethering thing is something I don't get. The K5, and I am sure the
K5II, as well as the K7 and K20 before this were fully capable of
tethering. The camera supports it already. All Pentax needs to do is
implement it with some software.

Tethering to a smart phone would be cool though.

The K5 to the K5II is as minimal an upgrade as the K7 to the K5 was. Or,
the K5II is the camera the K5 should have been, except for Hoya screwing
up the quality of the thing. Take your pick.
So far, it looks like the K5II AF actually works, which is more than I
can say for the K5 AF, which only really works in good daylight. Under
studio lights or anything other than daylight, all bets are off with the K5.
I haven't heard of any serious moire problems with the K5IIs, though I
am sure it is possible to design a test where fine lines exactly match
the pixel spacing and so give an interference pattern. I have seen
neither on either Forums Neurotica or DiPshit Review, which leads me to
wonder if moire can be made to be a problem, given the number of people
on those forums who seem to do nothing other than take delight in making
cameras perform badly so they can crow proudly about how clever they are.

To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List

Eric, Darren discussed your link speed, but you may have little
control over that if you're in hotels or bunking with someone. So it's
not Flickr being slow but rather you have limited upload bandwidth
available.

So you have to make the best of what you've got and that means
reducing the amount of data you are sending. I noticed that you are
uploading your full-sized camera images: 2008x3008 pixels. Do you
really need to do that? Would 684x1024 be good enough? This depends on
who you are uploading these for.

I also noticed that your images are noisy (based on your PESO image
20130916-IMGP6886 at 2008x3008). You may not care about a little noise
but it makes your JPEGs larger. This is because the more high
frequency content in an image the less the JPEG compression algorithms
can squeeze it. Noise is useless high frequency content.

You're using Lightroom 5 so you should apply some noise reduction to
all your images. You can make it a default setting applied during
import.

After that, well if you can't make the uploads any faster, then at
least make them more convenient -- make them run in the background.
Since you're using Lightroom, you should configure the builtin Flickr
Exporter (uploader). It will let you down-size the uploaded images,
compress them more, convert them to sRGB, etc, all automatically
during the upload. Then you can simply drag a large selection of
images over to the Flickr Exporter and let it rip.

Hope that helps, Eric.

Well I was thinking more about normal office like offices... where you
just print / scan / fax a few pages, not photo or book related things.
Those are somewhat specialist and unfortunately we don't have many
around here. We had two Xerox Document Centres in my previous office,
now we have just one simple HP Laserjet.

Xerox? You mustn't get around much, Attila. ;-)

The service bureau where I get my printing done has a Canon digital
press, a very popular system. It's the kind of machine that Blurb must
use in their backend. It can do book binding with the right module
add-on. The thing is enormous. You almost need a scooter to get from
the one end to the the other. They only warm it up when there are a
number of large jobs to run because it takes about 15 minutes just to
turn it on.

My last office place had a Ricoh system, if I recall. A real beaut.

These are Ground Hornbills often referred to as "Turkey Buzzards" by N.
American tourists because of their resemblance to the Vulture (Turkey)
Buzzard. They are the largest of the hornbills, not completely flightless,
spending most of the time foraging for food on the ground. They are quite
scarce with a slow breeding rate (about 1 chick per year).

K7 - the one with the chick; K110D - the others. All with the FA 100-300.

Re: More leaked specs for the K-3

2013-10-06 Thread Bruce Walker
Darren, the sensor shift idea would be _very_ simple to implement, and
because it would act just like the old fixed-in-position anti-moire
filters do; i.e. globally and without any processing involved. As soon
as you have to run some code over the entire image looking for
specific patterns you've got power-robbing CPU work, image pipeline
slowdowns, etc.

To implement the sensor shift idea, you could drive the sensor motors
with a single full sine wave each, with the X and Y signals 90 degrees
out of phase. This is just like driving stepper motors (a technique I
used to develop way back in the 1980's when I worked for an office
automation company designing daisy wheel printers).

Sending these signals to the sensor shift motors would cause the
sensor to describe a small circle. Mechanical gaussian blur.

2013-10-06 Thread Darren Addy
I'm pretty sure that any in-camera anti-aliasing is not going to
involve the SR system or sensor shift. The only thing that
anti-aliasing is needed for it moire. It would be much simpler to
detect and correct moire in the image processing (only the pixels
needing it) than shift the entire sensor and affect every single pixel
(which tells the software nothing).

One part of a nice building in downtown was recently restored. I took
a quick shot on my way home with a compact (not Pentax).

More architectural trivia: code name of the design project was
"Champagne" back in 1906.

Ah. Very different habits. I tend to standardize on one or two emulsions, and I

Re: Bulk Film Loading

2013-10-06 Thread Mark C
So far this year I've shot about 80 rolls of 35mm and maybe a couple
dozen 120 rolls, so that's a volume where bulk still makes sense. the
bulk rolls do take up a lot less room in the freezer and provide
flexibility for short rolls. I just don't like using one brand of
anything for too long, so bring through 20 rolls or so from a bulk roll
takes a while - I'd rather have 4 rolls each from 5 different brands and
speeds.
