Re: Yes! The Lomography Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens has been successfully funded.

2016-05-10 Thread Darren Addy
Well, I hate to put a damper on things, but did they specifically say that
they got enough support to build the K-mount version?

Everything that I read said that if they didn't you would be given your
choice of one of the other mounts or a refund. As a whole, the project was
a go 4 hours after they started (fully funded way back on April 6th) so
that email is just updating the number of supporters they had when the
Kickstarter ended today. And obviously now they know how many pre-orders
they have so they can know what quantities of lenses, etc. to order.

I wasn't paying attention to see how many K-mount preorders had been made
before they shut that down. But if they AREN'T building the K-mount and you
want a refund, I would imagine you would want it sooner, rather than later.
So I'd recommend asking.

That was a good question Mark. I did have something else I needed to do but oh
well…

So I did two pixel-shift shots of a shelf on my bookcase. The first
(which is at http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p1033969621) was using the D FA
100/2.8 macro @f/8, Full Frame. The second, next after the first in the
gallery, was same lens from same spot with same settings exceptI I put it into
APS-C mode. I should have done a third, just a straight shot without the
pixel-shift. I’ll restore the setup and redo the series later. If you are
visiting the gallery and find three bookcase shots rather than two, you got
there after I made the update. Other comments will still apply.

No guarantee that I have achieved perfect focus nor that I have the camera
exactly parallel to the bookcase. Ignore the darkness across the top of the
frame - just a shadow cast by the shelf above.

Zero presets when importing to Lightroom, zero size/quality settings on export
as jpg from Lightroom.

Download of the two (three) images from Zenfolio is enabled. Password is PDML.
You could play with cropping the FF version(s) to the same size as the APS-C
version, then pixel-peeping. Whatever. But the basic issue, can you pixel-shift
in APS-C mode, is resolved: Yes, you can.

historical "kit lens" discount on package deals?

2016-05-10 Thread Larry Colen
I've been vaguely aware in the background that normally when you buy a
camera body with lens it tends to be cheaper than buying them
separately. Since this is the first time since about 2007 that I've
actually been interested in such, I haven't been paying much attention
to how big that discount is.

While I'm really glad that the K-1 is selling so well (Pentax is
doomed!), I'm personally disappointed that Ricoh is not offering the
marketing incentive to buy it as a kit. At this point I need to do the
calculus of dividing how much money I might save by waiting by how long
I expect that I'd have to wait for the deals to come out.

This is, of course, moot if nobody has any in stock. B says out until
July, Adorama claims to have a few in stock, as does Cameta.

You might reasonably expect that, but nope. :)

Pentax supplies a free Lightroom image tethering plugin that works
over USB. I refuse to have anything to do with it because: (A) wires;
(B) if it glitches you lose the shot(s) [nothing is saved to the SD
card while in use]; (C) I'd have to have Lightroom running on
something in the studio. (I don't own a notebook computer.)

There is also a full-featured for-pay Pentax solution, and 3rd party
packages that supposedly work better than either of the Pentax
solutions, but I'm happy with my wireless solution, so haven't
bothered to test any of them.

I tether -- images only -- using a 3 year-old Eye-Fi Pro X2 8GB card
in the 645 to send low res jpegs to my iPad Air. I have no control
over camera functions, but that's okay. I stick the iPad up on a light
stand for the creative team and myself to see so I can judge lighting
and the other folks can ooh and aah. :)

Even though I'm sending the lowest possible quality jpegs to the
Eye-Fi, it still can't keep up when the shooting gets rapid, so
sometimes it's more of a PITA than useful.

Back in the Renaissance we used to send minstrels strolling round Europe
singing at painters telling them what not to do with oil paint. How we laughed
when that bloke from Vinci overdid his sfumato gimmick! Every bloody time,
especially on that soppy cow, Gherardini's missus.

And that Brunelleschi, would he draw a proper picture with everything piled on
top of everything else? Would he fuck! It was all perspective, perspective,
perspective. Knobhead. I bet he got his idea for the dome when saw himself in a
mirror.

That Michelangelo though, he knew what he was doing. Big muscly blokes with
tits, that's what a proper painting's about, I can tell you. None of that poncy
chiaroscuro crap from him.

I will spare the list my full on rant about the lack of written
documentation on Lightroom. I do not want to watch five minutes of
video when I could scan a written page in 15 seconds, or less, to find
the thing I'm looking for. Adobe won't even publish the scripts for
their online tutorials.

I did pick up a couple of handy items from watching the video, like
using the option key when using the sliders to see clipping points.
Unfortunately, with everything being on video and my hating video, most
of what I know about lightroom is self taught/discovered, so I'm missing
a lot of handy little things because I never discovered them.

Watching a couple of them, the headlines may scream "don't ever do this"
but what he actually says is to be aware of what you are doing and when,
and if you over do it, chances are that it'll suck.

1. Layout, interface, etc. The 645Z has a clear strong resemblance to the K-3
in many respects, with form details that harken back to the original 645’s.
(E.g., tripod mounts on both bottom and on left side, making it easy to switch
from horizontal to vertical and no need for an L-bracket.) (I also have
appreciated that the top-deck LCD is tilted, reminiscent of the MZ-S. ) They
took advantage of the empty space on the body’s upper left to add a few
function buttons. The AF button on the K-3 and K-1 are in relatively the same
position, the AF button on the Zis relatively more like on the K-5 bodies.
The K-1 is clearly a member of the same family with many characteristics that
could alsohave been derived from the K-3. So they are alike in that they have a
similar progenitor. The biggest difference on the K-1 is the obvious Function
Dial or Smart Function dial which, with the top-deck 3rd control dial pretty
much crowd the LCD off the top.
2. Usability. Both are “large” and “heavy”; in part because both are solidly
built.
3. Quality of output. I am hoping for less breezy conditions soon - I want to
do a macro test with the three bodies,m both single shot and stacking. And with
pixel-shift on the K-1. I’ll let you know.

I just did a quick look at the manual. E.g., the appendix on pp107ff which
talks about restrictions on combinations of special functions. When doing a
pixel shift you can’t bracket, use HDR, use any form of interval shooting, mix
scotch whisky with soda water, wash your dark and light clothes together, etc.
All reasonable and understandable restrictions. I see nothing that would keep
you from doing a pixel-shift while using APS-C mode.

Tomorrow I plan to try the pixel-shift, I’ll add an APS-C lens and an APS-C
mode into the equation…

Larry Colen wrote:

Sorry, Larry, but I do not appreciate the presentation (even though there
is some reasonable rational behind it.):

Too much fluff/hype and very little essence.
All of that could be summarized in one sentence:
"Do not OVERDO!" or "Use your head, you stupid!".

And Petapixel overhypes it on top of that: "10 Things NOT TO DO in LR".

Let me provide some examples:

"You should never ever use the selective color in Lightroom".

I dislike when people give these type of "absolute" advice that postulates
something without providing any type of reasoning WHY that shouldn't be
done (he never says that in that video), nor allowing any possibilities
that these tools can be used properly and then they are appropriate.
(Well, he mumbles something like "if it took you very short time to do it,
it must be bad".)

Essentially, the guy is showing bad use of tools and says: don't use these
tools at all, because I've shown how badly one can [mis]use them.

It would have worked better if these tips were called:
"How NOT to use tools in LR".
And that could be applied the same way to ANY slider: Exposure, Shadows,
highlights, sharpening, ... Do not pull them to far.

And he misleads you.
E.g. in the "clarity" video:
"Why the bottom of the building is lighter?.."
Well, because it was light before you touched that "Clarity" slider.
Yes you've effectively enhanced the contrast, and that made that
(pre-existing!) difference stronger. But don't tell me that it appears
just because of the "clarity slider".

I completely agree with Malcolm:

PS. Larry, just in case, - the irritation that might be seen in my

Considering I've had my K-1 since last Thursday it's disgraceful that
I haven't been able to try shooting with it yet (or even read the

The K-1 should have the same resolution at APS as the K-5, and a much
newer sensor, so I'd expect it to be slightly better. The one downside
might be framerate. Has anyone measured to see if framerate in APS is
any faster than in FF?

Alternately, I just shoot FF with the 24-70 (or 28-75), and worry less
about people going out of frame when they get thrown.

I do expect that one advantage of the K-5 is that it is probably a bit
quieter than the K-1.

(is that right?) - this was many moons ago when a Pentax digital
camera of
any sort was just speculation. Great bag, I store my film cameras in

but only useful otherwise day to day if you have some poor devil to
cart it
around for you. I have a backpack which I got as a free gift with a DSLR
body that is too small, and another free bag which just takes a body
and a
50mm lens attached.

Over the years from film, I've noticed that many bags have moved away
from
being able to house two camera bodies. I assume that because you now have
variable ISO, manufactures don't feel you need to have two bodies, as you
might once have done using different film. The thing is, what I want is a
bag that is capable of housing two bodies with lenses attached and enough
room for spare batteries and all the sundries of the digital age. Many of
the places I take photos, especially in the Summer are dusty environments
(horse stables for a start), and frankly, I don't want to be changing
lenses
on site. I normally have one body set up with the 16-85 & the other
with a
55-300.

What I am fed up doing, is carrying a bag which doesn't suit, and a
shopping
bag for the other camera. I don't really want a larger backpack, or a bag
which screams that it contains camera equipment inside. I'm not sure
there
is anything out there that fits the job I want done.

Any ideas?

When we get it all sorted the List will still be in plain text only.
But people will be able to send email to the server without
reconfiguring their client to send plain text only. (The server will
strip out everything but the plain text before passing it on to the

This is becoming important because almost all email services default

making it more difficult for users to change to plain text only.

They can take my plain text email when they pry it from my cold dead
