PESO Berry leaves

2021-02-13 Thread Larry Colen
Rather than hiking in the redwood forest in the state park (Fall Creek), I went
for a walk in the chaparral in the county park halfway around my block (Quail
Hollow). As it turns out, once I put the DFA 50 macro on the K-1 it stayed
there for the rest of the afternoon. When I bought it, all I had was an APS
sensor body, and it was an awkward focal length, and the DA 35 made an
excellent go for a walk in the woods lens. When I’m specifically shooting
macro I almost always use the DFA-100, unless I want a wide AoV for the
background, in which case I’ll use the sigma 20, so I don’t tend to think of
the 50.
On my walk in Fall Creek yesterday, I found myself switching a lot between the
DFA 100 and the 35/1.4 so I thought I’d give the 50 a try today. It really
does work quite well as a walkaround lens, particularly in the woods.

At one point there were some backlit berry leaves that had mostly turned red.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/50941595606/in/album-72157718285290357/

If anybody is interested in the rest of my walk:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157718285290357

The manzanita was quite interesting, many of the plants were somewhere between,
buds, flowers and berries, so the macro got quite the workout.

Its binomial name (here) is. Troglodytes troglodytes. There are about 30
subspecies, many of them endemic to islands, such as the Corsican and St Kilda
wrens. They all have triple-barrelled names. There is about the same number
of fully seperate species in the New World.

You know, some of our founding fathers wanted to make German the language
of the American government, instead of English. The area I live in was
settled first by the Native Americans, then by Swedes, then by Dutch, and
then by German refugees. The English Army threw the Dutch out of New
Netherlands by force, as the English were wont to do.

I hope England survives and thrives as an isolated island after Brexit, but
I also hope the Scots leave and rejoin the EU and the Northern
Irish finally give up and join the Republic. The question of where the

how every side can be accommodated.

The ones in our garden are occasionally visible, as they flit from one clump of
vegetation to another. Even more rarely they will perch somewhere obvious and
shreik defiance at the world, before going back into hiding and carrying on
being noisy from there. They are highly amusing.

The wren picture is from a French website. Troglodyte is simply the French for
wren. It really means a cave-dweller, the meaning you give is secondary to that
(when we were children living in Anglesey we called the local people trogs).
The French version of the wren apparently lives in small holes.

After I sent my original reply it occurred to me that the (British) English
equivalent of mignon would be sweet, as in ‘what a sweet little child’.

Etymologically it is from an Old High German word ‘minnia’ meaning love
(https://fr.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/mignon).

And the bird (Common Wren) is one of the commonest birds in the UK but, at the
same time, is so secretive that it is rarely seen. It does make a lot of
noise, though. So a perfect descriptor.

Quite the opposite in most cases. Some (e.g. Smew) are onomatopoeic versions
of the bid's call. Others (troglodyte mignon) refer to behaviour or (horned
screamer) are purely descriptive. The only one that may be slightly unkind is
the (Blue footed - there are others) Booby. This is related to the albatross,
spends minimal time earthbound and is therefore not the most agile of animals
on its feet. But that assumes a late 20th century useage of the term, which
may not be correct.

To me, mignon means small, as in filet mignon. Troglodyte means "a person
characterized by reclusive habits or outmoded or reactionary attitudes."

Re: OT: Species of Birds Named By People Who Clearly Hate Birds

2021-02-13 Thread ann sanfedele
I have to agree with Mike..and I love those bird names! - they are funny
and sometimes very sweet and/or rightly descriptive . and remember,
these mentioned are just the ENGLISH language version of the birds
common names, i.e., nicknames.. Not their actual zoological species
names in most cases.

(note to that twitter poster.. ugh)

I was kind of annoyed by the headline on Twisted Sifter "Species of
Birds Named By People Who Clearly Hate Birds is a Thing and It’s Incredible"

(it's the "incredible" that really got to me)

Much funnier (IMHO) and enjoyable are the two books by John, Ben and
Catheryn Sill who love birds but have invented a variety of species and
illustrated them in " A field Guide to LIttle Known and Seldom Seen
birds of North America." I've got the original paperbacks from 1988 and
1990..but there is a 2013 volume with a new not as cute cover on Amazon
as well.  Lots of used copies all over the internet, at least on this
side of the pond..

Thanks, Mike and Bob, for your interesting and informative comments. I
appreciate them all, and much of that I knew already.

The article, and my posting of it was intended solely as humor.

Re: More Ice

2021-02-13 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Larry, for the suggestion. I have a clamp light and LED bulbs I
could put in it. I actually tried going out on the upper deck, to see what
I could do. but I can't open the door because it opens outward and there is
two feet of snow and ice on the deck and right against the door.

I tried turning on the outdoor light on the deck next to the door last
night. Not much light reached the icicles I can see from the nearest
window, but I took a few exposures and will see what if anything develops.

Not that I can tell. we have screens over the gutters all around the
house, and they seem also to prevent ice from getting under the shingles,

Re: More Ice

2021-02-13 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
We have insulation on the roof and in the attic, but I guess we could
always use more. The classic sign of insufficient insulation is when the
snow on the roof melts away quickly, due to heat from the attic. We still
have a heavy layer of snow all over our roof, even on the southern side.

When the sun comes out, It melts some of the ice on the roof, and the slow
run-off forms these icicles.

My parents’ garden attracted a lot of birds and I often used to see wrens
there. I see quite a few round here too. They’re one of my favourites.
