ROTFL. Great stuff, Tom. Re: In Praise of the Augenblick Gallery and Christine
I would like to subscribe to every one of Bob's words. A big round for Christine! Jostein 2010/5/13 Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com: I'm finally recovering from the weekend and starting to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Boris and Jostein arrived Thursday and stayed with us until Monday. We enjoyed playing hosts but mornings were early and the nights were late. I was tired by Sat. AM. I took a few pictures but haven't looked at them yet. Christine told me after last year's PDML book that she was working on something with a friend. She had shown last year's book to Sue Barton, who talked about the potential for an exhibition this year. After long and careful work with Sue and Mark, she pulled it all together. I suspect it was much like herding cats, stubborn cats. She deserves high praise this great success. You buy the drinks the next time you see her! The gallery exhibition was professional quality, every bit as good as the Eggelston exhibit hanging in the Art Institute. The space was spotless white and the framed prints were well mounted. Mark's prints are much better than the copy quality in the blurb books. This isn't a knock on the books. The individual prints have a depth of color, dimension, and subtlety that the books just don't. Cudos to Mark. (We owe him drinks too!) The really big thing here is the personal interactions we shared. We are a bunch of internet geeks connected by photography and some electrons in cyberspace. Thanks to events like this one, we are a real community. Thanks to you Christine, you deserve the credit for dreaming this all up and making it a fun weekend. The Chicago Event
Dear gang, The Chicago Event was fantastic. I too have some shots I'd like to share, but that will have to wait until I have time to process the images. Hopefully tomorrow; ascension day is public holiday in Norway. Bob and Lynn Sullivan took very good care of both Boris and me throughout. I'm very grateful for their hospitality. The exhibition was very well executed. Absolutely fabulous to think of how one's image is hung in a gallery nearly half around the world. And even more so after having seen it in person. Christine, Sue, Mark, and everyone else that made the exhibition happen; thank you so much. Btw, I noticed there were predictions on the list that my pic would probably sell, and some even maintaining it would sell first; but I didn't believe it. So when it happened it was a very positive surprise. It is only the second time I have sold an image from a collection of prints where other photographers are present, and the first time from a proper exhibition. Boris keeps telling me I shouldn't be surprised, but it feels like an important personal milestone. I'm very glad this happened in a PDML context. At the same time, the penguin image competed for fame and glory (ie. no price for the winner) back here in Norway. BioFoto, an organisation for Scandinavian nature photographers with roughly 1400 members, had their annual convention while Chicago PDML'ers were browsing the Eggleston exhibition. One regular point on the BioFoto convention agenda is to cast votes for the nature photo of the year contest, and my penguin shot finished 4th out of 20 nominated images. Not bad. All good, really. A more mixed bag is that the same convention elected me leader of the organisation. It was expected since I was the only willing candidate, but it means I will have much less time to hang around PDML for a while. At least until I get on top of my new responsibilities. On Sunday, a select group of PDML'ers did a walkabout among house designs by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, before withdrawing to Bob's house for dinner and a little show of some more of my pics from the South Atlantic. Both Stan and Boris expressed interest in getting a copy of the book I made on the same, so I will look into making a few more copies. I'll look into producing a Blurb version as well, which is more convenient for direct purchase if more people are interested. And hopefully cheaper than the European alternative. As many others have mentioned, it was fun to match real physical persons to their cyberspace appearance. There were discrepancies, of course, but whatever stature, all seemed to me to reach exactly down to the ground. No small feat for such a large group of artist(e)s. :-) It was truly grand to see you all. Hope we can do this again some time. PDML ru13z. Re: JetLag 0, Boris 1
My flight out of Chicago was 16:25. Losing seven hours on the way, it meant I landed in Oslo around 9:30 in the morning, and hit home one hour later. Didn't sleep much on the plane this time; partly due to good company in the neighbour seat. I too forced myself to stay active all day and had a long night's sleep; with much the same result as you describe. I've been fairly well focused today. But boy, was I exhausted in the afternoon yesterday... :-) Look forward to upload my images to the computer tomorrow. Good to see Larry posting on PDML again despite how he was treated on Sunday, btw. I think that was not nice behaviour on Bob, Lynn and Stan's part. :-( Jostein 2010/5/12 Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com: Hi! If you remember I had opened a thread regarding jet lag back in February. It seems I've stumbled upon simple solution of this problem just yesterday. You see, all my business flights back were departure at around midnight and arrival late afternoon. So, I would arrive, feel beaten up and go to bed pretty confused all around. This time, however, I flew home on 7pm flight from JFK. Having to go as far north as Greenland, it took 11 hours and by 1pm local time I've arrived to Israel. Went home, moved round and about, had a quiet walk around the 'hood with my girls. Then, at around 7 pm I felt really really tired. Dragged myself on for another 2 hours and at 9 pm I hit the pillow really hard. And voila, today I was fully awake at 6 am as I usually do. Presently I feel ever so slightly tired but nothing to really worry about. I suppose, I should specifically request a ticket to 7pm flight from JFK next time they send me on the business trip across the big pond. Well, now I've vented ;-). Re: Tripods that fit in carry on
Wow, that's impressing. But still, it's a little over 29 hours straight, with 7 transfers; one of them including different train stations, and some transfer windows less than half an hour. With due respect for German punctuality, the probability of missing a departure is pretty high. Flight time between Oslo and London is 1 hour 50 minutes. Add another hour on each side for checkins, luggage and security, and another hour on each side for getting from airport to town, and you still have nearly 24 hours more at your disposal. It's entirely beyond me how people actually enjoy train rides, but that's down to preference. If one has the time, one can choose how to spend it. As to slow modes of travel, what would have been totally cool (for me, anyway) was to have a dirigible service with regular departures like trains or planes. :-) Jostein 2010/5/5 Bob W p...@web-options.com: Let's see... Re: Something of interest from his Thomishness
Falk Lumo has posted an article about it on his blog too: http://falklumo.blogspot.com/2010/04/pentax-shake-reduction-revisited.html It's a bit tough on the braincells, but quite interesting. For the math challenged like myself, here's the conclusion: Pentax delivers a capable shake reduction system able to provide up to 4 stops stabilization. However, it is designed to work best at exposure time around 1/20s and therefore, is most useful for normal and wide angle lenses used at low light or in video. Starting at around 100mm focal length, it is increasingly unlikely to see a positive effect from the SR system and beyond 200mm, the SR system cannot be used anymore to produce tac-shap images at lower than usual exposure times. Sadly, this matches my own experience pretty well. :-( Jostein 2010/5/5 Rob Studdert distudio.p...@gmail.com: On 05/05/2010, William Robb war...@gmail.com wrote: This is eerie. http://is.gd/bUqH3 And safe to read. It's off Thom Hogan's Nikon thingie (note spelling please Tanja), but it seems applicable to Pentax as well. The response of the movement sensors used in the Pentax bodies is no where near as fast as 1kHz (though I suspect he's interpreting this data incorrectly), basically they can detect sway and a certain degree of jolt. Like Thom suggests there is a definite shutter speed limit to which SR is useful, pointed out fairly eloquently by Falk Lumo on the Pentax web forums. It's useful but it's no panacea and really I don't think I'd miss it at all moving to a camera like the D700. -- Rob Studdert (Digital Image Studio) Tel: +61-418-166-870 UTC +10 Hours Gmail, eBay, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Picasa: distudio -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/ http://alunfoto.blogspot.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

2010/5/4 John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com: If I was in Europe, I don't think I'd ever fly. Trains are a lot more fun, and in Europe you can actually get somewhere on 'em. Let's see... Oslo - London by train... Route will go through: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, and UK. No central itinerary planner, will have to do it by studying the national railways of at least 5 countries/languages. Longest stretch I can book from Oslo is to Gothenburg, Sweden. It costs about as much as a low-fare airline ticket to London, takes 3 hours 50 minutes, and I haven't even traveled _one quarter_ of the way yet. I've done my share of interrailing. Even more remarkable in that I am an amputee (left leg below the knee) and wheelchair bound. The Italtrain has a service called Salablue which put me on a lift, put me on a disability enabled coach, and removed me again at our destination. All at no additional cost. Sounds like you had a great trip! In my example, I was thinking more about just getting from A to B, as a sheer transport. For that purpose, a couple of hours wasted in airports beats a couple of days wasted on a train every time. Just a quick hello from Stig Vidar, Tim Ø. and myself. On entering the PoD caste
Okay, silly pun... but you guys know me well enough to ignore this streak in my character I hope. :-) A while back I asked what you perceived as a reasonable price for a Print on Demand (PoD) photo book of a certain size (30cm square, 58 pages). Your answers were all over the scale, really; ranging from GBP 20 to NOK 900, which should be something like USD 30 and USD 150 respectively. Today I took delivery of a PoD book from CeWe. The Norwegian operation is through www.japanphoto.no; the EU website is here: http://www.cewe-photobook.com/ The cost was in the high end of your suggested range; NOK 700 (USD 120), and the result has really got me thinking. The paper quality and book-binding craftsmanship looks very decent, no complaints there. The pictures however didn't come out as I expected them. It's not all bad, however, some look better some look a lot worse. I will have to study the book together with my images when I get home from work tonight to see exactly what's happened. I suspect I've dived into most available pitfalls concerning image preparations for books, and expect to learn a lot. What I really wonder about, though, is how to discern my own mistakes from eventual poor quality from the lab. And that's what I need to know if I am to look for another PoD. Blurb is certainly an alternative, but due to some exceptionally silly VAT rules up here in the Frostpit, I will have to pay a 25% surcharge on my own book if I order more than one at a time from abroad. That, unfortunately, brings the total cost from Blurb on par with CeWe. But enough bitching. There's something really, really special about holding a printed book with ones own pictures inside. Flip through the pages, smell the pigments, the glue, the very pulp... It's elating enough to compensate for all of the above. Completeness with gaps is proof you're human. :-) 2010/4/13 John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com: Sort of. Finally finished organizing my 2004 photography from Iraq. Re: Exhibit details
2010/4/12 Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com: I did the same. And even more amazingly, Ann, the doc was openable in the freeware OpenOffice.app on my Mac. Kudos to the gallery for apparently using ancient s/w. You could also have opened it in GoogleDocs. -Just mention it since you post from gmail. :-) My tack was to open the PDF in PS, and add text layers. :-) Jostein -- http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/ http://alunfoto.blogspot.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT - iPad: Will It Blend?
2010/4/10 Bertil Holmberg bertilholmb...@telia.com: This is an act of vandalism, probably the lowest possible form of human activity. It also shows gross contempt for the underpaid Chinese girls that works long hours to produce all the nice things that we in the western world can buy for a very small part of our large salaries. Shame on you too for enjoying this charade. Rather enjoy this charade than underpaid chinese girls. Re: OT - iPad: Will It Blend?
2010/4/10 Bob W p...@web-options.com: And on a recursive note: can one Blendtec blend another? Or is there an implosion causing a black hole? well I'd say put one in the Large Hadron Collider but they actually use those blenders to make them pesky Hadrons... They can turn large hadrons into small hadrons so they avoid all those collisions. They can't proficient in traffic management down there. Just one large roundabout, and everything start crashing together. -- http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/ http://alunfoto.blogspot.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Attention PDML Exhibit Participants
Agh! COA will be in the mail today. that artist statement is a true PITA, though. And the bio too. I hate writing such stuff about myself. Will two sentences on each do? Jostien 2010/4/10 Christine Aguila cagu...@earthlink.net: By now all exhibit participants should have received 2 emails with important attachments from me. The 1st email you should have received is the Certificate of Authenticity (COA), which must be printed, filled out, and mailed to me, Christine Aguila. (I have received 21 COAs as of right now, they are at the framers.) The 2nd email is the DANKHaus contract, which must be printed, filled out, and mailed to DANKHaus. Please be sure you attend to both emails promptly. Big thanks for you prompt attention to both emails. Re: Attention PDML Exhibit Participants
2010/4/10 Bob W p...@web-options.com: Here's a freeby for anyone who's stuck: Neo-Parnassian in outlook, retro-futurist by temperament the artist X strives to maintain a consistent balance in his published ouvrage between a déclassé sub-elitism and a suprawhelming critique of the predominant Anglo-Saxon Euro-verzeichniss (to borrow Fronde's now-hackneyed phraseology). After struggling in her early years for an entré into the proto-'American' culture of Retzian vehemology, the rondpoint in his career came with the adoption of the new phalocrocoratic trending prompted (ab initio) by artists in the school of Robb, Cotterell and Brewer. Later influences which would be harder to dismiss (albeit difficult to detect) include a Roberts-derived courrientiel of the Pittsburgh years. Prices start at $15.99. LOL! Compared to that, I'm even to spartan for a KISS approach.
