Great many thanks, Paul. These 1.5 weeks were not easy.

I hope this time the armstice would last longer than it usually does.

Suddenly closing a message with "Peace!" has literal meaning.

Good day to you wherever and whenever you are.

Good times were had aplenty in the past years, but no more. I no longer
feel welcome here, merely my presence is tolerated. It stands to good
reason, that at least half of what contributed to this is on me, as it
always takes two to tango.

I wish you all the best wherever your path takes you and I'd gladly

Re: Happy New Year

2021-01-06 Thread Boris Liberman
Well, Bob.

Russian has no articles. Hebrew has the equivalent of the article 'the'
only. English - you know better than me :-).

Just point in case. The above sentence about Hebrew was originally "Hebrew
has equivalent of article 'the'". Google told me that I was missing two
"the"s...

My reasoning behind not putting them was that I wasn't referring to
anything from the previous text and it is kind of obvious what's the
subject, so I thought - article isn't needed. As usual - I was quite wrong.
Twice wrong in fact and these two wrongs don't make for one right.

I am glad I know three very different languages. I wish I knew Hebrew
better but it so happened that I can't write and my reading is very slow. I
did not read any books in Hebrew, so my spoken language is rather simple
too. Hopefully I could say "yet", though I am not planning on any such
activity in the immediate future. Of course "know" is flexible, because I
still cannot write a screenful of English text without missing a bunch of
articles, but it's the journey that matters, not the destination, right?

Beside learning Russian alphabet - did you go further? When we met, 15
years ago, I don't recall you trying to say anything in Russian. Not in our
presence, at least.

Normans (who spoke Old French) almost killed English. I think it was late
Old English or something.

But indeed many words in modern English that seem to be of Latin origin,
actually came via French speaking Normans.

I still struggle with the fact that my native Russian is based on
inflections, and for some reason, your ancient predecessors, Bob,
determined that wasn't their way :-).

And man, do I hate articles :-).

Re: Happy New Year

2021-01-01 Thread Boris Liberman
Daniel, I noticed the letter "ӱ" which is not part of the Russian alphabet
(due to two dots above the letter). So I realized it wasn't Russian, but
rather some other Slavic language.

I will now go on to wikipedia and look it up. It stands to reason that
there are many words between our languages that can be mutually understood.
I can understand some Bulgarian, Polish, Croatian...
Sometimes it is easier when it is written - I may need time to do the
mental processing necessary to recall respective Russian words.

My favorite podcast at the moment is "The History of English Language" (
https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/episodes/). I'm presently at about
episode 51. This is extremely interesting.

And it is great fun to get new year greetings in all the languages that
this list spans!

Всех благ!

Re: OT u4/3

2020-11-22 Thread Boris Liberman
Larry, you seem to have forgotten.

When we met, earlier this year, I had my OM-D EM1 on me. I think I have it
for like 5 or 6 years now. It is a good camera, has all the controls and
looks like a small DSLR. These you can find really cheap these days. You
can also look for EM1 mk2 - it is a bit bigger and improves in a number of
areas over my EM1. Most current is EM1 mk3, which is the flagship of the
Olympus range. I used some Panasonic cameras briefly, and I quite liked
them, but because it was brief, I couldn't suggest them - don't have enough
information.

Compared to cameras with bigger sensors, both older (16 MP EM1) and modern
(20MP EM1 mk2/mk3) cameras will exhibit some noise, even at base ISO.
Nothing deal breaking, but it is there.
In terms of ergonomics - they are very convenient (I did not need too much
time at all to get used to my camera) but different from what Pentax offers
(at least as much as I remember from the original K5).

There are second tier cameras - EM5, EM5 mk2 and EM5 mk3. They are smaller,
lighter, but still look like smaller still DSLRs. Most modern EM5 mk3 is
very close in function to EM1 mk2, albeit with some differences caused by
the smaller form factor. Did not try these, but they're probably cheaper.

One last bit, if you decide to own any of these cameras, please buy at
least 1 spare battery, though from my memories of our taking pictures
together, you would be better off buying 3 spare batteries. They are really
cheap and off brand batteries are not too bad. I have one Olympus spare and
two off brand ones (Wasabi power) - all is good.

Re: OT: Why are cars getting bigger?

2020-10-01 Thread Boris Liberman
Ralf, good to see you.

My problem is rather width due to sharing a covered parking space with a
neighbor. So moving from Hyundai I30 to Ford Focus Active X, I gained few
centimeters in width. It makes my parking ever so more difficult in terms
of precision. I wouldn't want my neighbor to have trouble getting in or out
of his car.

My late father was 172 cm tall and considered himself an average height. I
am 180 cm tall and I think just like my dad.

So, yes - he could fit comfortably in Ford Escort circa 1980es, while I'd
prefer bigger Ford Focus.

One can also look at VW Polo. It is as big now as some earlier generations
of VW Golf.

So, cars are getting bigger. Why would that be an issue?

Currently we have approx 300 confirmed cases. Now, authorities published
some stats. Out of these 300, several dozen that were tested and confirmed
have no symptoms whatsoever...

So, at least here they say that they need all these measures only to keep
health system from total crash... They are probably saving lives as direct
side effect of these measures, and they say so, but the underlying reason
is more pragmatic...

Deep sigh... The world will never be the same again...

Re: Borya in Californya

2020-03-13 Thread Boris Liberman
Godfrey, I am reasonably glad (I couldn't be really glad, because I wish
you did not have to through all this) that in terms of insurance the things
with your bicycle are looking up.

I also hope that this whole corona virus business, or actually total lack
thereof, subsides and travel will return back to normal. Then I would
certainly be looking forward to shaking yours and Felipe's hand again, but
this time on this time of the big water.

Yep, I am still waiting for that little video you shot impromptu in Apple
visitor center. I absolutely dig the narration :-).

Re: Exposure techniques

2020-03-13 Thread Boris Liberman
Well, here is my two centavos.

To begin with, my camera, being mirrorless has live histogram feature. It
is necessary to look up on the internet the specific settings for the JPEG
engine, because as I gather, the histogram is based on what JPEG engine
computes and not on what the sensor sees. Yet, having done that, I
generally tend to get consistent exposures most of the time. It also gives
me ability to not just apply exposure compensation and hope it goes well,
but rather see the actual effect on the live histogram.

Having said that, m43 sensors are small and their dynamic range is not as
good as that of their bigger counterparts. Thanks to our meeting, I have
started to use the same bracketing technique you were using.

Here are some examples:

https://web.500px.com/photo/1012223898/Close-encounter-of-pink-kind-by-Boris-Liberman/
https://web.500px.com/photo/1012152477/This-season-once-more-by-Boris-Liberman
<https://500px.com/photo/1012152477/This-season-once-more-by-Boris-Liberman>
/
https://web.500px.com/photo/1011928412/Strings-of-life-by-Boris-Liberman/

And actual Pentax content, thank you again, Larry:
https://web.500px.com/photo/1011807239/The-Cove-by-Boris-Liberman/

If I did not tell you that all these are HDRs, I think you wouldn't have
noticed. I am using my LR 6.14 to do the merging, and I am extremely happy
with the results. For most types of my photography, I would think that the
bracketing (at 2 Ev in each direction) would become my default mode of
operation. The rapid fire mode of EM1 is extremely fast, it is almost
imperceptible that it took 3 frames and not just 1.

Speaking of general quality of exposure, being on m43 for few years now, I
kind of got used to the slight noise. And what bothers me more is rather
the quality of color - the degree of it being true to life. Here I am very
happy with my little sensor.

Welcome.

Olga, given that we share the same language (not the one I am using to

And I absolutely second what Cotty wrote you in his message - pictures tell

Re: OT PESO Borya and his bones

2020-02-25 Thread Boris Liberman
Thanks, Larry. Yes, I am "borising" the ribs. For those who wonder what is
it to "boris" something - it is to eat a dish in a way opposite to how it
is supposed to be done. For example, to eat BBQed rib with knife and fork.

Yes, the redwoods are breathtakingly amazing. I had a feeling that I want
to retire right here, right now and just settle under one of these
giants... Piece and quiet... Nature... All of that is badly lacking in my
current life.

"(A)cross the water on a 747"

2020-01-25 Thread Boris Liberman
Hello there.

De-lurking for a brief while.

I will be arriving to SF on Feb 22nd and departing on Mar 1st. It is for
purpose of attending a professional conference in Santa Clara, where I will
be staying.

There are quite a few list members from this general (up to my (lack of)
knowledge of geography of the) area whom I'd like to meet.
The conference is taking place on weekdays, so I took two weekends around
the conference week to rest a bit.

Dear Californians, let's arrange a meeting!

Re: Boris 2019-09 - Blade Runner Looks Up

Larry, you're not right at all.

Borichka (which is friendly belittling form of my name, indeed) has read
this book. AnnSan was exactly right about this photograph. It is brave new

it came to my mind that Ryan Gosling's personage could easily have looked
up and seen something like this. Just so.

Not saying that I have as good a control of English language as most on
this list, but I stand by my words :-).

Re: Asking for a lens

2019-02-23 Thread Boris Liberman
Joe,

I looked up KEH and saw the lenses before I posted my request. You seem to
have forgotten where I live. If, say, I buy a lens from KEH and it turns
out that I need to return it for exchange or refund, the shipping will be
on me. It stands to reason that I will pay import taxes which I will also
lose and in case the second lens need to be shipped to me - I will have to
pay taxes again. In other words, it is too risky a proposition.

That's why I am asking my fellow list members. I wouldn't think that anyone
of you would sell me a lens that they wouldn't 100% use themselves...

Re: Boris 2019-09 - Blade Runner Looks Up

2019-02-23 Thread Boris Liberman
Ann, you grok very rightly.

As for the movie - it is a cult classic. First one, titled "Blade Runner"
was out back in 1982 starring Harrison Ford. The second one, rather
unexpectedly, was introduced in 2017 and is called "Blade Runner 2049".
Harrison Ford is still present, but the main star of the movie is Ryan
Gosling. For the first movie, the sound track was composed by Vangelis and
it is remarkable sequence of tunes.

I wouldn't want to go any further - you can google it up just as good as I.
Wikipedia states that both moves are made in "neo-noir" genre, which says
little to me, except that I really love the first move, quite like the
second one, and sometimes get this kind of mood.

Re: Boris 2019-07 - Like pencil sketch

2019-02-05 Thread Boris Liberman
Igor, I don't have PS and I don't do computational editing (if such a thing
exists).

In fact, as you can see easily, it was shot against the light and thus came
out with very dark darks and very bright brights. Originally, I edited it a
bit and thought that was it. Then, I realized, I wanted to see more of the
very dark darks, so I brightened them up a bit. Of course, m43 has small
sensor that is noisier than its bigger and more modern siblings. But
somehow I don't care too much about it. So, I kept on editing, trying to
brighten up the darks and eventually I arrived at this idea - make it look
as if it was not a photograph, but rather a pencil drawing - hence the
title.

Nowadays, my workflow is like this:
* Import to LightRoom and perform basic keywording/sorting and basic
editing, such as straightening up or cropping.
* Whatever I like, I would then edit in ColorEfex Pro from Nik plugins
collection. I have that favorite recipe of mine that basically includes all
the filters that I tend to use. Then I would mix and match to taste.
Admittedly, recently I am finding it great fun playing with film simulation
presets.
* Sometimes, I would edit in ColorEfex Pro specifically with the idea in
mind to continue towards b/w conversion. Then, sometimes the colors and
contrast becomes rather unnatural. Thus, I'd take the edited file and feed
it directly to SilverEfex Pro, where I would edit it some more, again
completely to taste. There, I also like film simulation presets and I would
also play with contrast, details, etc.
* Back in LightRoom I might edit it a bit more, perhaps apply a bit of
Noise Reduction if my editing is more heavy in that department.
* And finally export and upload.

Boris

You know, Bill, I am yet to see a Hitchcock movie from start to finish.
But, yes, it is dark-ish and square-ish and may be a bit creepy, though I
thought it was just a street scene with a funny text to add.

In fact, this very shop in Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv, does not stop to produce
fun writings on its front window...

Ok,

I kind of let the K-5 sit on the shelf a bit longer since the last FS post.

Any takers for USD 250? This includes shipping but you get to pay PayPal
fees.

To remind you - it comes with original battery grip, extra original
battery, magnifying eye piece and a remote release (I think I have both
wired and wireless - I will need to check).

Re: Boris 2019-01

2019-01-22 Thread Boris Liberman
Stan,

As you know, I am shooting m43 (Oly EM-1) these days. Wide open is not as
open as what you're used to with your FF or 1.5x cropped camera bodies... I
could probably open up aperture some more, but it wouldn't be that much of
a difference due to the distance between me and the couple (and a dog) in
the foreground and the rest of the image.

I think that first I need to start getting consistently meaningful images
in terms of content and then, once I get grip on that, I should start
trying to figure out things such as DOF control as I shoot. It will take
good time...

There no that much sand beyond the castle and in Tel Aviv, you cannot

a very narrow angle lens. I wish you could come and have a look yourself.

Re: Boris 2019-02 - Sunset kiss

2019-01-15 Thread Boris Liberman
Schmaltzy, I guess you meant to say, AnnSan.

Well, I don't think there anything particularly wrong in depicting
affection of young man and young woman in pleasant surroundings. Indeed,
this has been done countless times and it is a bit of cliche. Yet, I felt
that little tinge, that internal click that happens when you hope you took
a photograph that will turn out really good.

Although, you say that it is commercially viable. I couldn't possibly tell.
I never took pictures with the specific aim of making profit...

Re: Boris 2019-01

2019-01-14 Thread Boris Liberman
Hello Cotty :-).

I am still very much doing my first baby steps in the street photography.
My present obstacle (or not?!) is exactly what you pointed out. That is,
seeing in my mind's eye the final picture and then waiting for the frame to
build in front of my eyes, or not, as you said for yourself.

So, indeed, I should and would practice more and all your comments are
greatly appreciated.

I was struggling with the crop a bit. I wanted to keep the people sitting
with their backs to the same building on the left side of it. Then I
thought, I should leave some more space so they are not crammed in, so to
say. And so, ultimately, I couldn't find any other crop than the one I
presented.

Thanks for your .02 cheers :-).

Re: Boris 2019-01

2019-01-14 Thread Boris Liberman
Ralf, that's my problem too. When I look at the street in shoot-time, so to
say, and then when I look at the photograph in my LightRoom, I need to
decide what is relevant and what should be left out. In general, I am a
person who prefers more information to less, so cutting stuff off is always
a struggle for me.

I would think that using a longer lens and lower vantage point, would have
achieved what you have in mind, if indeed, I understand you correctly. But
that would be a different photograph.

Re: Boris 2019-01

2019-01-14 Thread Boris Liberman
Bob, you grok rightly.

In general, I was reading today comments for this photo on my phone
throughout the day and it got me thinking. Generally, or better yet,
broadly speaking, good photographs are either immediately very beautiful
(say, a nice landscape) or interesting (well done busy street scene with
good story or stories behind it). Immodestly, I am at least trying to aim
at the second. It is quite hard, as Larry put it nicely, the cultural
context of mine is very different than that of my viewers. This is both fun
and challenging.

That analogy with the cat totally escaped me. You out-imagine me here, if
you'd permit me using such a word contraption.

Thanks, Ann. Yes, it was this rather strange out of the context kind of
scene, that caught my attention.

The rendering is great fun. I admit, I use plugin for LightRoom, SilverEfex
Pro is its name to simulate various types of b/w film. This is very easy
and yet it gives very diverse results in terms of the final image. I think
this is free set of plugins I wholeheartedly recommend it.

But street shooting in general and b/w rendering feels as of recently as

Re: OT: To our British Pentxians

2019-01-13 Thread Boris Liberman
Daniel, politics is not a game by definition. Game means rules, unless you
mean "game" as in subject of hunting. And rules means abiding by them.

Politics, and especially high level politics, thus is anything but game.

Do we really need to go on on the list?

Re: My Mood Is Changing ... Again

2019-01-04 Thread Boris Liberman
Thanks, Rick.

You're being too kind.

Yep, I do tend to like to render some of the photos I take in B Saying
that, I admit that Silver Efex Pro plugin to LightRoom allows me to choose
from several simulations of B film which is great fun in itself.

But, really, these are just ok-ish travel photos made by a very tired
programmer.

Re: My Mood Is Changing ... Again

2019-01-01 Thread Boris Liberman
Thanks for your kind words, Godfrey!

That's exactly my problem with traveling. If I go abroad, I normally don't
get the second chance, let alone a chance number one dozen :-) to visit the
place. There are some rare places that we visited more than once or that I
visited multiple times. In fact, this is my second visit to Chengdu and I
had a chance to visit one of these tourist locations second time over. But
indeed, two times is still way too few to start feeling the place, so to
say.

I must say that I find street photography extremely difficult. Even with
small camera, small lens, with full confidence in my gear and what not - it
is really very hard to make a shot that makes sense.

So, I have my challenges that keep me going.

In terms of gear, I don't have much to complain about, or in fact nothing
at all. I have what I need and if/when I buy anything, it is more out of
whim rather than because I really need some specific gear. Modern cameras
and lenses far surpass my abilities as a photographer. That, by the way,
includes m43 system.

Re: My Mood Is Changing ... Again

2019-01-01 Thread Boris Liberman
It does not work for me this way, Stan.

Normally, when I go on a trip abroad, I would take more consistent
pictures, but less interesting or less inspired, if you will.

If you're inclined to go through 25+ pictures - have a look here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1H7burQbgc8DiRi5SPYFheKR11tcBBRPN

I've just returned from a business trip to China. I had few evenings and
one full day where I could take pictures and generally not be in the state
of work. All pictures are taken with Oly EM-1 and Oly 25/1.8 - nifty fifty,
which is very nifty indeed, as far as technical quality is concerned.

They are ok-ish, but they are not spectacular. I am still trying to find a
different rendering of this or that photo, but...

I don't have any particular issue with my muse. She is just ever so
slightly bored, as always and she lets me keep on going like this.

John, previously I only sold my gear on PDML and PentaxForums. I sold few

You're right about the taxes though as of recently, it has become quite all

I see... Well, Ken, K-5 is 3 generations forward from K10D, so I should be
able to get a better price. But it will have to be proven.

I hear you, Peter.

Sad, but you're probably right.

Ok, wise and venerable people of PDML - make me a fair* offer. I don't use
this camera and it would be just sad to see it turn into electronic dust.

If you think you would have use for it - please let me know your offer off

Still Friday, Still For Sale:

K-5, with original grip, extra battery (also original), magnifying eye cap,
remote and whatever else accessories I would find. I am the original owner,
and my daughter Galia used it too a bit.

Slightly more than 20,000 shutter actuations.

How USD 300 sounds, shipping is on me, we split PayPal fees?

Hi again.

The 77 limited has been spoken for. As I said earlier, I am keeping A
50/1.2 for now. So what remains is the camera.

The description is provided below. Nothing changed since I posted my first
for sale ad on it.

Well, I just tried SMCP A 50/1.2 via two adapters on my Oly EM-1... As a
portrait lens it is marvelous, so I'm keeping it :-).

Camera (K-5) and the limited lens (FA 77/1.8 Silver) are still offered.

Thanks.

Friday for sale

2018-11-09 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

Now that all give away gear has arrived at its respective destinations,
I've some items to sell.

Pentax K-5 - I am the original owner and my older daughter used it for a
short while. It comes with original battery grip and one extra battery.
Total shutter actuation count is slightly above 20,000. I'll include a
remote and a magnifying eyepiece. All is in good order. I'd like to get USD
350 for the whole thing where shipping is included into the price. I will
ship with EMS with full insurance etc.

Pentax SMC FA 77/1.8 Limited. This one has a long story. It is in SILVER
color and comes with matching silver frame Pentax protective filter. Made
in Japan. This lens had fungus and was fully repaired by Pentax USA. It is
absolutely OK and I shot with it after the repairs - it is perfectly fine.
The lens cap has some marks of use, 'cause I realized it too late and
switched to regular plastic lens cap after some period of use. I have a
green pouch for it and I'll naturally include that pinch cap so if you
(hopefully) plan to use it - you can preserve the original cap. Asking USD
600 including EMS fully insured shipping.

Pentax SMC A 50/1.2 - comes with matching B+W protective filter. Clean in
and out. If you're into fast normal lenses - this the lens to have. Asking
USD 500 including EMS fully insured shipping.

If you think my asking prices are totally unreasonable, do make your offer,
though please don't lowball me.

Please be aware that due to relatively high value of the lenses, I won't
mark them down for purpose of insurance or taxes.

Thanks.

fact, they are extremely capable for most of what I am shooting for my own

Giving Away Gear, that is.

I've Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 (old, screw driven one) and Sigma 24-60/2.8 (in my
opinion very fine kit lens for FF Pentax body).

If you want any of these, talk to me off the list. I'm not using them, it
will be a pity to have to let them fall apart or something like that.

Thanks.

Re: Slideshow (every so often)

2018-05-15 Thread Boris Liberman
Thank you, AnnSan!

To make a slideshow in LightRoom is trivial. It has a special Slide Show
module and the rest is pretty much straightforward. You create a collection
with the images, you order them by dragging and dropping to your liking,
then you enter the Slide Show module. There you set slide duration,
transitions, music, writing, etc. Then finally, from the top menu you
choose Slide Show -> Export Video Slide Show and follow the prompt.

Re: Slideshow (every so often)

2018-05-14 Thread Boris Liberman
Curious, I was thinking that it was mostly a feature of operating system,
not specific phone. But then again, Note 4 is rather old. I think that
Android 5.0 was actually an upgrade and that it came with Android 4.4.x by
default. Hence maybe your situation. I must say that I rather recently
(less than half a year) upgraded from Note 3 to Note 5 and I am very happy
camper.

I most certainly appreciate your comment about my style. This is rather new
for me. Especially given that you reminisced (right word?!) about my other
photos. This is way cool!

Thanks a bunch!

Re: Slideshow (every so often)

2018-05-11 Thread Boris Liberman
Larry, if I understand correctly, every phone that has Android 5.0 and
above may have DNG capability. Yet, the DNGs from that specific sensor
(again, as I understand, it is a long used sensor in several Samsung top
model phones, including mine) produced surprisingly nice images that were
very easy to process.

Pardon my asking - but what kind of style you're referring to? I wonder,
since you're the viewer :-).

Re: Slideshow (every so often)

2018-05-11 Thread Boris Liberman
Well, Paul, thanks for your kind words. It wasn't bitter and it was very
sweet. I perfectly realized that in a certain sense I indeed traveled in
time machine and this place was both mine by birth and not mine by other
reasons. But no bitter feeleings.

The slide interval is indeed a problem. You spotted it just right. First, I
chose the images I wanted to show to people. Then, afterwards, separately,
the idea of the slideshow exactly to this tune came up in my head. So, I
had to fit one to the other. The slide interval is 2.6 seconds which as you
said, is too short.

I will do better next time :-).

Daniel, this is totally amazed me at the time, but when I was riding metro
again, it brought back avalanche of memories. For example, I had distinct
recollection of the train accelerating between some two stations, exactly
where I remembered the emotion some 26 years ago.

Moscow Metro is indeed a very special thing.

The history is unfolding just as I am typing these words :-). But you're
absolutely right, I should have gone there to mend things and the city is
indeed very beautiful.

Re: Slideshow (every so often)

2018-05-11 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi, Alan.

Indeed, Moscow is 100% western. Same GetTaxi service (and some others),
same hamburgers (I was taken to one place where the mince the meat on
premises, so to say - wonderful lunch), metro (subway) trains come every 2
minutes, city is clean and people are very polite.

So, all in all - except the different language and some natural
differences, Moscow can easily compare to NYC or London.

Slideshow (every so often)

2018-05-11 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi there.

After short pause of mere 26 years I visited my home town couple of weeks
ago.

Here is 2.5 min long slideshow I made.

https://youtu.be/xLnN7HvkO-c

For tech heads: it is 720p video. Oly EM-1 and surprisingly to me, Galaxy
Note 5 was used. It turns out that DNG files my cell phone produces are not
bad at all.

As for the trip itself - it was very personal and very emotional thing. Now
I feel more whole than before.

Appreciate your comments.
