Hi Darren

I'm a bit behind with the list, but, just to let you know, I'm a
guitar player too. I've been playing since I was 14 and have several
acoustic guitars and an original '73 Tele Deluxe. I treated myself to
a hand made guitar by Martin Cole for my 50th birthday. Martin calls
it the Nimbus and basically it's a Martin Co J model shape with
cedar top and Indian rosewood back and sides and plays and sounds
beautifully.

Here's a link to Martin's Nimbus page. The guitar pictured isn't mine,
but Martin has kindly included a sound clip of me playing my Nimbus
with Fat Freddy's Cat.
http://www.martincoleguitars.co.uk/nimbus.html

There's a picture (Thanks to Chris Hevey) of me playing mine here:

I like the sharpness wide open. The other neat thing about this lens
is how close you can focus with it. It is apparently a 1:2 macro and
will focus down to a couple of inches in front of the front lens

When I first moved here the site at the junction with Christchurch Way was
still derelict, 50 years after the war. It's been built on now. Some of the
older people still living on this street were here throughout the war, while
the bombs were dropping round them. From time to time while people are doing
building work an unexploded bomb still turns up. The most recent near to me
was on the riverside path about 10 years ago.

When you zoom out of the map it's quite shocking to see how many bombs fell
in such a short time. We gave as much as we got, of course.

Very interesting Bob.

A sad story: My mother's family was living in Devon and they had a
little girl from the East End billeted with them as part of the
evacuation of children. Her father, a docker, came to visit and she
innocently told him to take his elbows off the table as it was bad
manners. He said something like I'm not having my daughter growing up
with middle class airs and graces. He took the girl back home with
him. After the war my mother tried to track them down and heard that
the whole family had been wiped out by a direct hit on their Anderson
shelter a couple of days later.

Apart from having a few good shots in them, they bring back some intensely
personal memories. About 25 years ago, I was the site services manager at the
plant. The first 6 shots are my old air compressor house and I was
responsible for the sign in shot 5.

Half way down the second page are photos of my power station and the
generators that I lovingly maintained and operated, all now derelict, yet
 somehow beautiful.

It's a tale of how some of the old economy in the UK (and elsewhere) has
decayed and gone away over the years. For this factory the demise of coal
mining in the UK in the wary 80s resulted in the loss of demand for almost
all of the market for the explosives produced here.

One of the highlights of our trip down the Cotswold Way last year was

Yes, there's a face. Just 1 on the west face of the tower. Most remiss

Fantastic view, but somewhat scary...

Re: PESOs: Church Clock

2012-10-14 Thread Chris Mitchell
Thanks Paul. It was made in 1831. The date's on the quarter dial and
it's contemporary with the rest of the clock.

One day I'll go back and see if the rope can be moved out of the way
to get a cleaner shot. It's a bell rope - the 8 bells are above the
clock room and the ringers' room is below. The clock borrows three of
the main bells to ring the hours and quarters. I'll have to ask nicely
as it would be very bad karma to upset the bell ringers...

That's fantastically Gormenghastian. All that mechanism for one tiny clock
face that doesn't even have a minute hand.

I picture your friend as Mr. Flay, dry, lanky, with sunken eyes, slowing
climbing with his long fingers clutching the rope bannister of the bell
tower to the sound of cracking knee joints, barely able to turn the great
mechanism, but driven by 16 generations of family service to get the ancient
clock dusted, greased and wound until at last he throws himself suddenly
away from the straining cogs as they release their tension and the colossal
bell sounds a single mighty clang that reverbates over the nearby valleys
 and meadows.

The peasants look up from their labours; the huntsmen briefly pause in their
yarooing flight; the photographers mutter a silent curse as the sound wave
disturbs their tripod, and Cropredy sinks once more into its autumn slumber,
forgetful of the world, by whom it is forgotten*.

Thanks Mark. Yes, it's a pleasure to see the B17 still flying. At
Duxford there's a memorial to all of the US aircrews who were lost
during WW2. There's an image of each aircraft lost engraved on the
glass walls of the walkway leading up to the museum. Very moving.

Thanks Bruce. Mostly motion blur I think. Panning a 300mm lens with a
shutter speed that shows propeller blur is a bit of an art...

Well I wondered if maybe you were handholding the 300. In that case,
 well done! :-)

You *can* sharpen up motion-blurred shots a bit in Lightroom/ACR if
you crank the Radius value up around 2.0 or more and reduce the
Amount. It's basically a compromise between fine detail sharpening and
local contrast enhancement. And Photoshop's Smart Sharpening filter
has settings for reversing motion blur if you can determine the
 dominant direction/angle of the blur.

Thanks John. I guess you'd have been at Kingston just prior to the
Hawker Siddeley takeover? I was at Hamble, near Southampton, just
after so it was no longer called Follands. Gnat production had
finished, but it was still the RAF's jet trainer and the Red Arrows
were still using Gnats. The only time we had whole aircraft in the
factory was for refurbishment or to repair heavy landing (i.e. a
crash that someone walked away from) issues.

I'll never forget the last season of the Red Arrows using the Gnat
before they moved onto Hawks - they did a special thank you display
for the Hamble factory right over Southampton Water, so they were able
to go really low. Stunning and unforgettable.

Thanks Bob,

Yes it's a T9 trainer. A number of single seaters were converted
during the 1940s as dual seat trainers to train Seafire pilots in
carrier operations. There are only a couple left, both in the UK I
think, although there is talk of a team starting manufacturing one
from scratch. Up until about 5 years ago it was possible to go up as a
passenger (at a very high price!), but it's no longer possible for
safety / licencing reasons.

I picked a buffet to make paying for each person's dinner simple. I'd love to

I couldn't find that when I looked at the site. There are plenty of

brewers making IPA, one of the best-known being Greene King. I'm not a
big
fan of IPA, but I do like the Meantime one. Part of their mission is to

well as
to experiment with brews from other countries, so a number of things
they do

Their beer is served in something like half of the Michelin-starred
restaurants in Britain, I believe. That gives you some idea of how good
it
is. There isn't a single Meantime brew that I haven't liked. They have
a
very clean freshness about them and great flavour, so when you come
