Getting the right balance between the two is an interesting exercise. When using the 540 to provide background illumination, I find it most predictable to set it to wireless slave mode, put it on manual and home in on the right illumination for the particular background. Pretty sure I haven't actually nailed it with this one, but even getting to a proof of concept is a small victory for me. Comments on lighting techniques most appreciated. With close subjects (inches to meters), the actual distance of my subject (properly focused by looking at magnified LCD) can be similar to that one indicated on the distance scale of the lens. However, when trying to properly focus at infinity I have to set a much closer distance on the lens ring, with larger and larger offsets as focal legths shorten. Examples: 100mm lens focused at infinity - focusing ring is set at 15-20m; 50mm lens focused at infinity - focusing ring is set at 7-10m; 28mm lens focused at infinity - focusing ring is set at 3m! With a Samyang 8mm fisheye, there's no way to focus (lens helicoid has no run enough to find focus). It happens that by setting the focus at its minimum focus distance, the lens is almost (but not yet) focused at infinity. By approaching the subject, things become worse. Have you ever seen anything like that? How would you explain that? Wrong adapter? Too short to set proper register distance for K-bayonet lenses? I recently saw a different way of doing it. Attach a QR adapter to the sling using the supplied tripod thread nut mount the camera to the QR adapter using the QR plate on the camera. (Bogen/Manfrotto RC 2 version) http://tinyurl.com/6638n28 The Quick Release plate stays on the camera and the Quick Release adapter stays on the sling. Easily dismount the camera from the sling when you want to mount it on the tripod. The reason I prefer the Sun-Sniper is the steel wire woven into the strap to reduce the chance a thief will be able to cut the strap and steal your camera. I think mounting a QR adapter on the sling might negate that protection. - No virus found in this message. Competitors start on the beach at Kumara on the west coast. They run, bike and kayak a total of 243km over a mountain range and across to finish on the beach at the eastern side of Christchurch city. And the best ones do it in well under 12 hours. Just like last year I turned up to the finish line to take a few snapshots. One of my dreams would be to take a 645D and a helicopter and follow the whole course over two days. Anyway, there's only so much variety I can get while standing at the side of the finishing chute. I hope this is interesting but it's not too much different from the ones I took last year. I'm pining for an 80-200 f/2.8 zoom. I missed a few good shots from being stuck at 200mm. I've split it into two galleries as the software preloads the large images and there are enough of them that it might take a while to load otherwise. Part 1: http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1359-2011-02-13-speights-coast-to-coast-photos-1.html Part 2: http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1360-2011-02-13-speights-coast-to-coast-photos-2.html The photos look out of order because there are three types of competitors: two-day teams, two-day individuals and one-day individuals (the so-called Longest Day, they have red race numbers). The two-day competitors have a staggered start on the second day so you can't really tell who's placed where when they finish. I apologise for the small size of the images. I'm trying to work out the best way around this. [quote] Final Ruminations Some might wonder why I would buy a Nikon D7000 if I already have a Pentax K-7 with several DA lenses. The answer is that I’m not a brand fanatic. I use whatever tools I like and have available to get the job done. Different jobs often require different cameras. I suspect I’m not alone in this regard. As one example, Pentax’s flash system is not as well-designed and sophisticated as those from Canon and Nikon. The Pentax AF-540FGZ struggles in situations where comparable Canon or Nikon flash units produce consistent accurate exposures and color balance. When I’m covering a wedding or an event I need a flash system that makes the job easier, not more difficult. The Pentax flash system isn’t quite there yet. I also have an occasional need for lenses or specialized accessories that are readily available to rent for Canon or Nikon but hard to find for Pentax. In this respect the D7000 is more of a replacement for my Canon EOS 30D than a replacement for the Pentax K-7. The K-7 is still my camera of choice when I’m travelling and want to be able to carry a variety of excellent lenses in minimal space. The D7000 also can’t compete with the fact that any lens I use on the K-7 is image-stabilized. Being able to use a 55mm f/1.4 in low light with shake-reduction is a wonderful thing.
