Shortened link to blog image only this time, since the text in the
article has no connection to the motif.
http://turl.no/fkb

I've been playing around with a two-flash setup for macro in the last
couple of days, using an AF540FGZ in addition to the AF160-FC ring
flash. Getting the right balance between the two is an interesting
exercise. When using the 540 to provide background illumination, I
find it most predictable to set it to wireless slave mode, put it on
manual and home in on the right illumination for the particular
background. Pretty sure I haven't actually nailed it with this one,
but even getting to a proof of concept is a small victory for me.

Comments on lighting techniques most appreciated.

This blog post by Erwin Puts rang a few bells for me, and I suspect it will

okay -- i'll bite; i find Erwin Puts' essay to wishy-washy; it's
internally contradictory; he seems to romanticize film process as if it
were purely intuitive, yet he then warns against common sense

Puts seems to define professionalism as technical mastery (to me it is
as much about ethics, efficiency and emotional detachment), but
accepting his definition, i would disagree with him overall that
technical mastery must conflict with craft

this is hardly unique to photography -- i think of how a grounding in
CPU instruction sets and binary logic, of which i'm rarely conscious
these days, gave me confidence and trained my mind for much more
abstract programming; and i think of how my rudimentary technical
knowledge of sailing has held me back despite a strong intuitive sense
of the helm from an entire teen-hood of intense practice

i think there are many valid paths; one wonders if Puts' self-expressed
attunement to film and exposure came about without any rigorous
technical work ... that can happen, but when it does it usually comes
from intense, if intuitive, practice and/or that unconscious genius
which silently computes and internalizes technical knowledge for a few
lucky people (as it struck me when Bob Sullivan recently commented that
Gallia's gonna be mighty good by the time she's a teenager, and she
won't really know why.)

so genius can take care of it, practice can breed intuition without
technical understanding, and study of details can allow one to rise
above details; or any combination thereof

Yes, in the following sense. My optometrist asks me what my intended
use for the glasses is, I say computer monitor, he gets me to sit in
front of an LCD monitor as I would normally, measures distances and
adjusts the prescription accordingly. Voila! monitor glasses.

I did have to change optometrists when the crusty old guy couldn't

Something I first learned about working in the high end audio game in the early

case, having each of the two images of the tulip stacked on top of each other,
and switching back and forth. I probably should have written it as A:B to make
it more clear.

Love the 40LTD for it's field of view, hate the lens for everything else

I decided that perhaps a 43 LTD was in my future, and probably sooner
rather than later.

Looked on Adorama's website and thought the price was OK, especially
since the Canadian $ is a few cents more valuable than the Greenback, so
I ordered one.
And the day it arrived, I noticed that Adorama had raised the price a
hundred and fifty bucks over what I paid.
Somehow I luck out quite often on these things.
Anyway, it seems like an OK lens.
And winter here appears to be no longer hanging on like a wet turd on a
dog's behind, so I might actually go out and use it one of these days.

PS. I am at K-7 level. :-)

PPS. Larry, to answer seriously, besides the color boost that you've already
done, you can play with suppressing the highlights and bringing up the
shadows, decreasing the contrast, and playing with the curve.
Or, if you have a PS, - to separate the photo into (two?) layers,
and change their brightness separately.

I was asking similar questions on PDML back in Dec of 2007 or Jan of
2008.
Here is an example of the shots I was dealing with:

In 1994, the powers that be thought they would save money and buy into

They had a QA with the party chiefs and the one question i asked the

Result, they did not.

Hello list,

There seems to be quite a number of you folks out there who now have
newer DSLRs with video capabilities. It's been a year or more since
these cameras came online but I don't see any VideoESOs flying past in
the PDML.
Granted, I don't check the list as often as I used to and I don't read
nearly as many of your messages as I once did (I AM still watching you
though...Cotty... and Frank... and Doug) but I figured by now video
submissions would be a common occurrence around here.

Is video a gimmick feature that you just don't use?
Are your videos too racy? (let us judge ;)
Is making decent videos just too hard?
Or are you guys just too much the old dog type or even purists?

For my part, having at least six video cameras lying around the house
(I'm actually surprised by this number but I'm counting the cell phones
and PS cameras + 1 Flip style camera), I find that the same problems
that have plagued us since the days of film-based home movies. Just
rolling during family events and outings produces lots of crap footage
that nobody really wants to edit into a package that anyone besides
Grandma would want to watch.

So, Why no VESOs, y'all?

Cory

The hugely expensive Novoflex adapters are only really necessary with
Pentax lenses that do not have an aperture ring. They allow manual
adjustment of the aperture by providing a secondary ring which moves
the iris actuator mechanism, similar to but more flexible than what I
used to do with the DA21 and DA70 when adapted to the L1 (I just stuck
a little museum putty between the iris actuator and the adapter to set
the lens opening I wanted to use).

It has nothing to do with AE ... No lens adapter made that I've seen
does the auto-iris thing. Auto Exposure is supported with any adapter
in aperture priority mode: you set the lens opening you want and the
camera sets the shutter speed to match it. Camera's don't need
aperture position information to meter correctly that way.

 Let's do some math:
 K bayonet register = 45.46mm
 m4/3 register = 19.25mm
 Then K-m4/3 adaptor must be 45.46 - 19.25 = 26.21mm
A caliper reads 25.85mm for my adaptor.
Hence it looks like being 0.35mm short. Is that enough for such a weird
 behaviour?

 Hello gang,

I've just tried a few Pentax lenses on my Panny GF-1 (via K-micro4/3
adapter), just to find a weird behaviour.

With close subjects (inches to meters), the actual distance of my
 subject
(properly focused by looking at magnified LCD) can be similar to that
 one
indicated on the distance scale of the lens. However, when trying to
properly focus at infinity I have to set a much closer distance on the
 lens
ring, with larger and larger offsets as focal legths shorten.

 Examples:
 100mm lens focused at infinity - focusing ring is set at 15-20m;
50mm lens focused at infinity - focusing ring is set at 7-10m; 28mm
lens focused at infinity - focusing ring is set at 3m!

With a Samyang 8mm fisheye, there's no way to focus (lens helicoid
 has
 no
run enough to find focus). It happens that by setting the focus at its
minimum focus distance, the lens is almost (but not yet) focused at
infinity. By approaching the subject, things become worse.

Have you ever seen anything like that? How would you explain that?
Wrong adapter? Too short to set proper register distance for
 K-bayonet lenses?

 Cheers,

 Dario

I shot Grace tonight in a nearly dark room, with illumination provided mainly
by an iPad screen. k-5, DA* 60-250/4, f4, 1/20th, 75mm, ISO 8000.

The K-5 with the new firmware easily locked focus. The focus assist light
blinked, which probably helped. Of course it always seemed to focus well in low
light without the firmware upgrade.

But in the case of the person who colourized this photo:

I say, string him up!

When I was answering Darren Addy on another thread, I was looking for

doing a Google search I came across this (there were a few others that

Why would anyone do this?

Why?

Hello Dear PDML members,

I have recently (re-)joined the list and I have been busy following
the lively discussions lately.

Our friend Doug has just kindly reminded me of the fact that I was yet
to introduce myself (no emoticons here).

I am a middle aged male from Ankara, Turkey.
I like to photograph and I like to read on photography as well.
These two activities dominate my non-business hours.
I like to shoot film as well as digital and I like to play with my
equipment which includes a pinhole camera.
More info is available at the links below.

I am happy to be with you and I expect to be an active participant.

Reading that blog I see that I'm not alone in my frustrations with
camera straps. I hate anything, including camera's and ties, hanging
from my neck. The short standard camera neck straps are extremely
annoying. The camdapter hand strap combined with a Optech shoulder
strap is what I use now. I'll try the camdapter sling and the next
option is the Luma.
Maybe mounting an L bracket is an option but L brackets on the K20
block the little door on the left side...

Thanks for the tip. Mounting a QR adapter on the sling is a good idea.
Since I'm using the camdapter with the strap, the Slingstrap makes
most sense. This thread got me thinking again and a free shipping
coupon from camdapter made me bite.

Never noticed the Luma Loop. I was thinking about the Blackrapid,
Sun-Sniper or Camdapter Slingstrap. Since I don't want to remove my QR
plate the only option was the camdapter sling. This Luma Loop has an
 extra long option.
 Now I don't know...

I have the Sun-Sniper that has the screw-lock carabiner.

 http://www.sun-sniper.com/typo3temp/pics/cd16b500db.jpg

I use the Bogen/Manrfotto RC2 Rapid Connect Plate.

 http://tinyurl.com/4u8gq3y

The Sun-Sniper's screw-lock carabiner clips easily to the metal loop on the
screw Bogen/Manrfotto uses to mount the RC2 plate to the bottom of the
 camera.

I recently saw a different way of doing it. Attach a QR adapter to the sling
using the supplied tripod thread nut mount the camera to the QR adapter
using the QR plate on the camera.

 (Bogen/Manfrotto RC 2 version)

 http://tinyurl.com/6638n28

The Quick Release plate stays on the camera and the Quick Release adapter
stays on the sling. Easily dismount the camera from the sling when you want
to mount it on the tripod.

The reason I prefer the Sun-Sniper is the steel wire woven into the strap to
reduce the chance a thief will be able to cut the strap and steal your
camera. I think mounting a QR adapter on the sling might negate that
 protection.

Larry, other than the CA apparent on the 1.4, I got the impression that the
focus is slightly near - the right side of the center rose looks sharper than
the other. Or you used that border of the rose to focus. It IS softer, there
are problems if we look to the 2.8 shot at the same time. Still wouldn't stop
using it whenever I needed to.

I usually close some when I use the m50 1.7 - unless I need it open. Later on
I'll get the target or a ruler and check my cameras. Didn't do it lately.

Subject: GESO: At the Coast to Coast finish line

The Coast to Coast is one of the world's greatest sporting events. Competitors
start on the beach at Kumara on the west coast. They run, bike and kayak a
total of 243km over a mountain range and across to finish on the beach at the
eastern side of Christchurch city. And the best ones do it in well under 12
hours.

Just like last year I turned up to the finish line to take a few snapshots.
One of my dreams would be to take a 645D and a helicopter and follow the whole
course over two days.

Anyway, there's only so much variety I can get while standing at the side of
the finishing chute. I hope this is interesting but it's not too much
different from the ones I took last year. I'm pining for an 80-200 f/2.8 zoom.
I missed a few good shots from being stuck at 200mm.

I've split it into two galleries as the software preloads the large images and
there are enough of them that it might take a while to load otherwise.

Part 1:
http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1359-2011-02-13-speights-coast-to-coast-photos-1.html

Part 2:
http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1360-2011-02-13-speights-coast-to-coast-photos-2.html

The photos look out of order because there are three types of competitors:
two-day teams, two-day individuals and one-day individuals (the so-called
Longest Day, they have red race numbers). The two-day competitors have a
staggered start on the second day so you can't really tell who's placed where
when they finish.

I apologise for the small size of the images. I'm trying to work out the best
way around this.

Cheers,
Dave

To all the nattering nabobs, I say I've yet to damage anything ever using
 canned gas.

Nor a 100PSI stream of compressed air out of a 1mm aperture, I've
cleaned dozens of camera sensor and lenses with my compressor without
causing the slightest damage but am constantly told that it would
definitely screw the camera. Canned gas is too expensive and it's a
PITA to ship, for out of office sensor cleaning the Pentax sticky kit
always solves the problem, it's not much fun to use though.

Mike Johnson had a link ot his buddy's review of the Nikon D7000,
Gordon Lewis of Shutterfinger, and I found these two paragraphs
interesting and also my point of view as well, as a two system
shooter.

[quote]
Final Ruminations
Some might wonder why I would buy a Nikon D7000 if I already have a
Pentax K-7 with several DA lenses. The answer is that I’m not a brand
fanatic. I use whatever tools I like and have available to get the job
done. Different jobs often require different cameras. I suspect I’m
not alone in this regard.

As one example, Pentax’s flash system is not as well-designed and
sophisticated as those from Canon and Nikon. The Pentax AF-540FGZ
struggles in situations where comparable Canon or Nikon flash units
produce consistent accurate exposures and color balance. When I’m
covering a wedding or an event I need a flash system that makes the
job easier, not more difficult. The Pentax flash system isn’t quite
there yet.

I also have an occasional need for lenses or specialized accessories
that are readily available to rent for Canon or Nikon but hard to find
for Pentax. In this respect the D7000 is more of a replacement for my
Canon EOS 30D than a replacement for the Pentax K-7. The K-7 is still
my camera of choice when I’m travelling and want to be able to carry a
variety of excellent lenses in minimal space. The D7000 also can’t
compete with the fact that any lens I use on the K-7 is
image-stabilized. Being able to use a 55mm f/1.4 in low light with
shake-reduction is a wonderful thing.

Excellent! Great expression and bw rendering. When did those kinds of hats
become popular. I was at the Vivian Maier opening reception Friday night
and bunches of folks, mostly young, were wearing them. While I love the
photo, I don't see the attraction to the hat. Cheers, Christine

Issue 105, Volume57 has an interesting 'course outline.'

The Last Gasp of Kodachrome is mentioned in post number 10 by Steven,
and we all contemplate the passing of a giant once again.

But the New Pullet talks about her first experiences with that New
Pentax, the *Ist-D. She announces I Like This Camera. And Eight of
the Twelve Comments are about AnnSan and the New Pentax entering the
Digital Age.

The King is Dead! Long Live The Queen, holding the Ist-D!

Lurker Galloway, shutting up, and none-too-soon.

(I'll still miss those nice bright colors' and the 'greens of summers'
that make me think all the world's a sunny day. Oh! Yeah!)

Interesting or even intriguing. A fine imagery but almost devoid of
people. My brief encounter with you, Chris, in Chicago made me think
that you quite like taking people's pictures... Almost none of these here...

Feels like people in these places have rather quiet and relaxed life...
