Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018
Most years I do struggle to find any that I am really confident about submitting. Last year, I had the Blue and Beige image from Santa Fe, which was a no-brainer, but nothing stood out like that for me this year, so I agonized for quite a while. Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018
Almost all contemporary smartphone screens are relatively high resolution, but older less-expensive computer may motors are not. based on complaints I see here about how posted photos are too large, I can surmise that a number of pdml listers are looking at low-res monitors. A good 4K or 5K monitor will always display a photo far better than the best smartphone. I'm butting in again to say that I think I know what Boris means. The smaller phone images appear a bit brighter as it happens, and their detail cleaner. Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018
Nope, I actually meant what I said. My Samsung phone has excellent screen. I even think that the phone firmware is playing tricks on me when showing photos. I've a good screen for my desktop computer at home and it is naturally the best - big and properly calibrated. But the cell phone surprises me. As for the glasses - last year was the first I actually bought myself a special pair of office glasses - multifocals with limited range (up to 2 m), so my eyesight ain't gettin' any better... Okay, I guess I could use an old Pentax photo, but the last time I shot with Pentax was apparently 2007. IE looking through Lightroom and reading the metadata. Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018
My issue is that I went to Ricoh for the GXR, used mostly Voigtländer and Leica lenses on that, and have since moved to primarily Leica lenses on Leica bodies. I've sold off most of the other digital gear and never owned any Pentax film gear other than the long gone 645. Nowadays when I use film, it is Polaroid or Hasselblad, and when I shoot digital it is nearly exclusively Leica. While I likely have a lot of older photos from a decade ago with Pentax gear, I've already cherry-picked the best and presented them. I'm much more interested in presenting what I'm working on nowadays vs resurrecting what I was working on @ decade ago... G -- No matter where you go, there you are. Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018
I don't expect that is really going to be much of a problem. They may have switched to another manufacturer's equipment, but it's still the same hand & eye behind the viewfinder. IF the group consensus is to bring back ex-PDML folks "with *whatever* equipment they're using now, I'm offering a suggestion how it might be done without losing the essential Pentaxness of the annual. Won't bother me if my suggestion doesn't fly. I've plenty of experience with that. It's not for me to say who should be in or who should be out. I'll submit my images (if I can find any I'm not ashamed to share); Mark will decide how to format the book and when it becomes available I'll buy it. Book pricing is relatively fixed to a certain minimum for the page count unless you move to cheaper paper, less expensive covers, and such, but I wouldn't do any of those as they can degrade perceived value. My thought is that various ex-PDML folks left the list when they moved to other equipment, for whatever reason. Inviting ex-PDML folks to join in producing the 10th Anniversary edition with *whatever* equipment they're using now, wanting to enjoy their photography regardless of what brand of snappy box they use, might encourage more to participate AND buy. ... Because, in the end, I buy the PDML Annual to enjoy seeing photographs by the other folks on this forum and to support the charity, that's the value proposition of my payment, and what brand of equipment they used of only passing interest.. So opening up the annual in such a way that recognizes my enthusiasm for the PDML and for photography regardless of what brand of camera I use is pretty much the only way I'll submit anything I've done in the past short eon of my photography.) I'm in the same boat, or rather dingy, as i shoot 4 systems and i have photos from my Fuji or Nikon that would go nicely with the book but cannot submit them. I know is a Pentax list but we do allow PESO's of a different mother so to speak. Cost is certainly an issue. I think the last one was north of $A100 due to the current exchange rate, and these days Blurb discounts seem to be pretty much non existent except for the original author. I'll certainly still get a copy but I can understand why cost can be a factor. Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018
My suggestion: 1. Do the Annual as before, perhaps trying to bring the price down just a bit. 2. Do a special anniversary supplement, featuring the best of the best over the last 10 years. (Perhaps this might be a calendar or a poster or some other format.) 3. Establish a voluntary scholarship fund to reduce the cost for those who are economically stressed, and have been regular contributors. Just some random thoughts to confuse the issue. I'm sure there are many reasons why someone might or might not purchase a copy of the annual. Most tend to do more with the cost of a book than anything else, but even such seemingly trivial things as bookshelf space count as a limitation that could prevent a purchase. "Never degrade quality to expand sales: increase perceived value to expand sales" is the only way to go. I'm not cash-rich at the moment so priorities mean disposable income is apportioned accordingly. Getting north of 40 quid for a book is beyond my limits I'm afraid. Use however pages are needed for the content. But please keep the same format! a) for compatibility on the bookshelf; and b) because in my own experience with larger formats, the “standard” seems to be the most usable. stan > On Dec 29, 2017, at 1:23 PM, Mark Roberts wrote: > > I have a question for the masses: > > Should we do this one as a special edition of some kind? I'm for keeping format the same... I actually like the paperback the best.. but more pages if the submissions warrant it. an On 12/29/2017 3:12 PM, Jan van Wijk wrote: On Fri, 29 Dec 2017 13:23:19 -0500 Mark Roberts wrote: Should we do this one as a special edition of some kind? Agree, while the price does not bother me too much, I would like the format of the book to stay the same, so it fits in with the growing stack of previous ones :) Regards, JvW -- Jan van Wijk; http://www.dfsee.com Flickr : jvw_pentax -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My guess is that those who don't buy a book includes primarily those who see that they, again, have only one image chosen. Perhaps even a slight quality softening would increase sales. Not encouraging it understand, but would increase the page count.
