PESO: Moonrise Over Akaroa

2013-11-04 Thread David Mann
My wife took this one with her iPhone, which takes better pics than my
cellphone. I wasn't carrying my SLR so this is all I have :(

I've cropped and made a couple of minor adjustments in Photoshop.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/688/#peso

Missing this one was the reason why I took the Pentax out to take sunset photos
the following day (see the gallery I posted yesterday for those).

Cheers,
Dave

PESO - Moonrise (sans bruit)

2010-05-29 Thread frank theriault
The majority of those commenting on my Moonrise PESO from yesterday
commented on the noise. I use GIMP for processing, so de-noising is
not like PS or Noise Ninja (which doesn't seem to have a plug-in for
GIMP), but I did my best with what I have and came up with this:

For purposes of comparison, here's the original:

I prefer the re-do. You've significantly reduced the sky noise yet avoided a
sharp outline of the moon area. I see a tiny bit of the original noise between
the trees. Something not everyone would notice.

i prefer the noisy original; in part because of the character the
noise imparts, and in part because the denoising is a bit strange -- it
did only the sky, and missed some parts between the trees; the smooth
sky and noisy ocean bugs me; plus some definition of the streaks in the
sky was lost in the denoising, but i wouldn't notice that without seeing
both

i like it, yes very impressionistic

Excellent composition and exposure. Yes, the grain is pretty heavy.
Not much to do about it - you could try one of the noise reduction
programs on it, to see how much it could clean up.

Just got back from a day of working in San Francisco (weekly affair)
and have posted your request.

What happened is that my gallery creation software had a limit set on
size, which caused the image to be shrunk a little bit more than the
image loaded up to Pentax Photo Gallery. That resized a sized down
version - I'm sure that didn't help.

Anyway, here is the image again:

There is a chance you may need to refresh it in your browser.

Anyway, here is the image again:

http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/ptreyes_0137a.htm

There is a chance you may need to refresh it in your browser.

Re: PESO - Moonrise

2007-10-18 Thread Bruce Dayton
Just got back from a day of working in San Francisco (weekly affair)
and have posted your request.

What happened is that my gallery creation software had a limit set on
size, which caused the image to be shrunk a little bit more than the
image loaded up to Pentax Photo Gallery. That resized a sized down
version - I'm sure that didn't help.

Anyway, here is the image again:

http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/ptreyes_0137a.htm

There is a chance you may need to refresh it in your browser.

Re: PESO - Moonrise

2007-10-17 Thread Igor Roshchin

Even the moon is slimmer in California. :-)

As for the photo, - I am not sure if it works for me or not.
I think, the first impression/thought that I had was the ~1:2 ratio
of the image dimensions. Time-to-time I have problems with the image
proportions deviating from one of the standard ratios (2:3, 3:4).

A while ago, somebody posted a link to a technique that allows to
shrink(compress) photos only in some parts of them.
Probably this image would benefit from that - if the portion between
the RHS of the lake and the moon is compressed.

Re: PESO - Moonrise

I wonder if your contrast is too high on your monitor. There is
detail there to be seen. It is subtle, however. There are some dark
shapes in foreground that give way to a slightly lighter shade and I
can count two low hill peaks on the right prior to the top of the
last hill.

I'll have to go look on some other monitors to see how it looks.
Thanks for the comments.

I love the composition! It looks rather noisy to me, and I'm not to sure
about the foreground. It barely reaches perception, not dark enough to
silohouette or light enough to have detail.

Overall I like the scene but wonder if a diferent post processing would
render it better.

Taken this past Saturday in Pt Reyes near San Francisco. We actually
went to see some of the wildlife and at the end of the day on the way
back, we were confronted with the scene. I have rendered it just as
we saw it. It was a fairly low key, peaceful scene rather than an
overly punchy scene.

Pretty, but, for me, the moon is too far over to work as a focal point. I
didn't even notice it at first. If it was mine, I'd actually cut and paste the
moon in PS much further over to the right. Then it would really work.
You might lighten up a few of the black areas, too. I see some detail, but
there could be a tad more.

I might advocate trimming just a little more off the bottom but that's
really nit-picky and could be argued against as a matter of taste
anyway. Although it's untraditional, I love the placement of the moon

Nice to see you bought a tripod
I quite like it, FWIW. The foreground looks a bit muddy, but that could be
the fault of the internet more than the picture.
If it is out of range of the sensor, then a multiple exposure approach might
have been something to consider.
You really need to be shooting large format.

Re: PESO - Moonrise

I wouldn't generally expect noise to be a problem at ISO 200 either, yet
I've seen it in some of my *ist D shots. Ambient temp + longer exposure
could introduce some.

What I'm referiing to is a general mottling of lights and darks in the image
in areas that one would think should be identical in tone, especially
visible in the areas of land in proximity to the water, as displayed. It's
an almost vertical texture that appears to 'wash across' the image.

It's not too dissimilar to artifacting.

It's another of your great pictures.
The sliver moon is just an eye magnet!

I was expecting one side only.
I had to go look up Point Reyes...although we were thru there last year.

Okay, I won't trash it, but I have to be honest, this doesn't do much
for me. I think it's those apartment buildings or hotels or whatever
they are on the horizon. To me, they're just so bland, they take away
from what might have been a nice shot.

I like the grassy marshie things in the foreground, and of course the
colours of the sky are inspiring. As a couple of folks have already
mentioned, here's the exception that makes the rule: the horizon in
the middle does indeed work.

But, those damned apartments! vbg

Sorry, but I think it's just me, so no need to pay attention.
