Yep, you guys are right! Just updated and no problems! I’m up to speed now: Lightroom 6.10. Thanks, guys! I was worrying for nothing. Don't worry, Christine: the current update is for Lightroom CC2015.x/6.x ... If you have the standalone license, it updates the standalone, otherwise it updates the CC version. Re: Epson P600?
Christine - just do it. I have not yet moved to the CC version of Lightroom. Since LR6.0 I have regularly updated, just went to 6.10 a few minutes ago. I have seen no negative consequences of doing the upgrades. Under the Lightroom Help menu, choose Updates and go from there. Easier than going to Adobe directly, and then having to wade through menus and options to finally find the non-CC version of your update(s). stan > On Apr 14, 2017, at 9:09 AM, Christine Aguilawrote: > > Yes, you do get some new Print Setup options. Re: Epson P600?
Yes, you do get some new Print Setup options. You know, I checked my version of Lightroom, and I’m at Lightroom 6.5, then I remembered that there is an up date, but I haven’t updated because I don’t trust that this update is an update for the stand alone version of Lightroom—it has CC next to it, and I don’t want my Lightroom version on the desktop to be creative cloud. I may have to call Adobe about this—and calling Adobe is about as much fun as having a paper cut when you have to cut limes. Glad you're enjoying your P600, Christine! I noticed last evening with the latest P600 drivers on macOS, when printing from Lightroom 6.9 and setting Lightroom to do the color management, there's a new, additional "Paper Handling" menu in the Print Setup that you need to use before you can get access to all the paper types in the "Printer Setup" menu. It threw me for a loop for a little bit—I couldn't select Velvet Fine Art in the "Printer Setup" panel until I had set the paper size and feed in "Paper Handling", in addition to setting it in the "Page Setup" dialog. Once I set the paper type there, everything worked perfectly. A new wrinkle, I guess. Nothing big just a little confusing. :-) G — The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it. > On Apr 12, 2017, at 9:27 PM, Christine Aguilawrote: > > My P600 arrived today! > > It’s true—the black and white prints do pop—as do the color. Re: Epson P600?
My P600 arrived today! It’s true—the black and white prints do pop—as do the color. I printed both color and black and white on the Epson metallic glossy paper, and it really looks nice. I just finished printing some black and white Velvet Fine Art in both letter and 13 x 19 inch paper. Very nice. As to loading paper: It’s BETTER! Yea While there are a few extra steps, these steps are so inconsequential. Once you pop out the front manual loading tray (not a problem to do), I think loading the paper flat and guiding it through is less anxiety ridden than the other process on the R2880—easier to get the alignment right. In the 6 prints I just made, I did get one “paper askew” notification, but that was due to user error. I also set up the wireless printing with AirPrint on my iPad Air. Easy-peasy! I printed a flyer I made using Pages and had saved as a JPEG. I wasn’t expecting the color to be that great—but I was wrong: the color is very true and really pops. I printed it from the Photos app, and I printed it on some premium matte paper. The set-up was a breeze. I was expecting complications, but there were none. I may have mentioned that they painted my office, and I have been doing some serious printing and framing of my work on my office walls. The dedicated color wall is moving along nicely, but I only have two large prints on my dedicated black and white wall. The progress is slower here because a) I’ve been thinking that I want to shoot some new stuff specifically for the B/W wall and b) I knew I was seriously thinking of getting the P600 (provided I got some good PDML reviews, which I did) and wanted to wait for better prints. Well, now that the printer has arrived, I will probably reprint the two prints already on the wall and replace. I really like the quality of the B/W on the Epson Metallic Glossy paper, so I may do more printing with this paper. For Mac users, you have to download all the driver stuff from the Epson web page. Immediately after, I checked for any updates, and those appeared and I updated immediately. When I opened Lightroom (most current version on the iMac (non Creative Cloud)), everything was right were it should be, and I went through all my usual selections. I have the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom, Adobe InDesign et al on my MacBook Pro w/Retina. I haven’t set up the P600 on that yet, but will do soon. The only real problem now is space in my home study. The p600 now sits on the only flat work space I had. This would change if I got rid of the R2880, but I’m not willing to do that—at least for now. More to the point, I’ve been thinking a lot about my so-called creative space: right now it’s just filled with a jumble of stuff. It’s a mess. I may have to take some time to rethink my creative space, so it’s more pleasurable to work in—more efficient. Easier to think about, but much harder to reconfigure! So, I recommend the P600—and I’m looking forward to trying some of the hot & cold press papers. Oh, and I love that I just had to press a button to switch to the matte black cartridge. Gosh, I hated switching out cartridges on the R2880. The actual switching out wasn’t a big deal, but waiting for it to register, so you could choose the appropriate paper was often frustrating. Life is better! Re: Epson P600?
The only paper feed issue that I've heard complaints about is the fact that the manual feed on the P600 requires extra steps for each piece of paper loaded ("open the guide, insert the paper, press the load button, close the guide" compared to "insert the paper through the guide and feed it in until the switch starts the load process"). The only paper I've had minor difficulty loading is Hahnemühle Bamboo in the 8.5x11 size, because it's quite heavyweight and has a tendency to curl (a little anti-curl massaging on the corner of the printer solves it every time). Otherwise, this printer has operated with no problems at all. Re: Epson P600?
Ordered the p600. Should be here on Wednesday. Got the rebate form downloaded. I should be able to report out a few days after arrival. I’ll have to do a quick test before I send in my rebate to make sure the printer is in working order on delivery. Chris Mitchell and I believe Steve Harvey gave the p600 excellent reviews as well. On the R2880, I did use the alcohol and q-tip method to clean paper grabbers that I could reach. That helped a little bit—for a bit—but still had a few retries to get the paper to pass through with the manual feed. Sheet feeder is fine. No problems there. I’ll keep the R2880 around for some craft project work until it dies, and use the p600 as a dedicated photo printer. I ordered it last night and it will arrive on Wed. I printed out the rebate form. Deadline for rebate is 4/30. Looking forward to trying it out and will definitely report to the list. Hopefully, my experience will be the same as Godfrey's. :-). Re: Epson P600?
Note that there is a Rebate ($150) and a trade-up discount ($50) in effect 1-30 April 2017… E.g., see, http://atlex.itsuppliesinc.netdna-cdn.com/media/pdf/rebate/TradeUpP400,600,800April2017MIR.pdf I recently uncovered and started up my 2880 after a very long period of inactivity. Had the expected multiple passes to clean the heads, 3-4 inks needed replacing. But what bugs me is that the paper feed is working very sporadically. A true pain. Based on this thread, I did a quick google on P600, found one review that was very positive except for paper feed problems ( with certain papers). Makes me wonder though if I shouldn’t just struggle through rather than upgrading. But Godfrey’s note is encouraging... Re: Epson P600?
I'm going to replace my 2880 with a P800. I get quite a few requests for 16x24 prints. And it would be nice to take full advantage of full frame pixels. Re: Epson P600?
Hi Christine, I've been using the P600 for a year and a half. Highly recommended. The improved paper feed system over the R2400/R2880 is one of the truly great things about it. Compared to the R2400/R2880, it's got better blacks, better brilliance, and just does a better job. I don't recommend trying to refill the ink tanks. You can't get the Epson inks for refilling of the same formulation. I've found this printer to be pretty economical on ink anyway ... the big tanks help, and I think the heads have greater precision in laying it down. I use Velvet Fine Art and Hot Press Natural papers the most, but swap to Photo Black ink for Exhibition Fiber. It does an excellent job with all three. Also with Hahnemühle Bamboo and other fine art papers I haven't found any papers that don't work well with it. You can't go wrong with the P600 unless you need the larger paper size of the P800 ... :-) G On Mar 20, 2017, at 3:32 PM, Christine Aguilawrote: >>> On 3/19/2017 4:21 PM, Christine Aguila wrote: >>> Hi All: >>> >>> Is anyone using the Epson P600? >>> >>> Care to share your thoughts on print quality and user workflows >>> and/or issues? >>> >>> My Epson R2880 is still working, and I have been printing lately, >>> just now in fact, but the rollers aren’t always grabbing on the first >>> try of a print. Re: Epson P600?
Excellent to hear, Chris! Have you used the front loader for papers like Velvet Fine Art or similar type of papers? Is the front loader fussy, or pretty consistent? Fun to hear the bw quality is excellent. I was able to get my office at work repainted and a bit of an upgrade in office furniture—actually it’s nicer used furniture that a sister school ditched, but it’s so much nicer than the furniture we had; everyone in my department is just tickled pink with what we were given. Also, we were given a choice of 3 colors for one wall to be painted in our choice color—I chose a playful muted pinkish color, and on that wall I’ve started hanging matted, framed black and white photos—I call it my good’n plenty wall. The opposite wall is used for my color photography. It’s been so much fun planning and printing prints to hang on the wall. Since we have so many bookcases in our house, I don’t have much wall space to hang prints, so this has been a fun project. My desk faces my office door, and that wall I call my elephant wall—prints of elephants—my favorite animal. The wall behind me has a bit more political theme—I have a poster I love with the “Make Art Not War” message. It’s one of my favorite posters. Anyway—getting a bit windy and wordy here! Thanks for thoughts! Cheers, Christine > On Mar 20, 2017, at 1:59 PM, Chris Mitchellwrote: > > Christine - I've had one for a year or so and find it excellent. I think it’s best to print high key renderings on the metallic. I thought it just ok for low key renderings. I haven’t done glossy prints for several years. Re: Epson P600?
Christine - Red River Paper has a pretty extensive review of the P600 here... http://www.redrivercatalog.com/infocenter/articles/epson-surecolor-p600-review-introduction.html And a print cost analysis here... http://www.redrivercatalog.com/epson-surecolor-p600-cost-per-print.html Have you tried cleaning the rollers on your R2880? Over time they collect paper dust and become slippery. My Epson R2880 is still working, and I have been printing lately, just now in fact, but the rollers aren’t always grabbing on the first try of a print. I often have to try a few times before the rollers agree to grab the paper and run the print. I’m a big Velvet Fine Art user. Love that stuff, but I have to use the back feed, and it’s been fussy lately. I’m definitely considering P600 so that I don’t have to change-out the photo and matte blacks. I see the ink cartridges are much bigger and $32 a pop (listed on the Epson website). Any thoughts about ink? If you have the P600, have you tried it on metallic paper or any other specialty papers? Thoughts? Quality? I have some metallic paper I want to try on the R2880, and may soon, but I’m still interested how it works on the P600. Interested in any and all information you have to share!
