Looks good!
There is even one of mine in there :-)

Trying to order it failed though, near the end of the process
it simply said 'could not process ...'

I'll try again in a few days, perhaps their printing is not up to it yet.

It was surprisingly easy to make the selection. Portrait-orientation
photos were obviously out, as were square shots. And a lot of the
landscape-format shots (like your "Street Sweeper", I'm afraid) were
to 'fat' a rectangle to be cropped into the proportions necessary for
the calendar format. Then, after deciding that people like Jostein
could only have one photo in the calendar ;-) I just leaned toward the
ones with a strong overall graphic element.

Thanks for noticing and commenting on that. Rick's shot probably

People seem to assume that a shot of theirs that doesn't get into the
book has been judged inferior in some way. That's often not the case
at all. A photograph has to "work" in the context of a whole lot of
other images from photographers with wildly varying styles - a very
tricky thing to attempt. Few such pairings are so serendipitous, but
we really put a lot of effort into making the book a cohesive work, at
least as far as such a thing is possible. Sometimes a great part is
left out to help achieve a better sum.

Part 3B:

I'm PISSED because Rick Womer and Ted Beilby independently came up with
stunning surrealistic images of chairs, at the opposite ends of the scale,
and filled them with great humor, which was then intensified by Mark's
placing them side by side.

I'M PISSED because Steven Sharpe and Brian Walters took junk -- literally
-- and turned it into items of interest and beauty.

I'm PISSED because I'm bugged by my lack of patience, while Jan van Wijk
and Jostein Oksne have the skill, artistry and patience to turn bugs into
things so fascinating and compelling.

Mostly, though, I'm PISSED that I have run out of time, energy and words to
describe all the great photographs in the best annual ever!

Part 3A

I'm PISSED because Bruce Nagel and Larry Colen both called up the ghost of
M C Escher to produce images that just hypnotize me.

I'm PISSED because I took hundreds of images of beautiful orchids in Maui,
and Jan van Wijk came up with an orchid image that brings the flowers alive
to an extent I find frightening.

I'm PISSED because I am always looking for something interesting to
photograph, while Dag Thrane and Toralf Lund took images of nothing and
created compelling works of art.

Part 1 of my comments on the annual.

Well, I finally got my copy of the 2018 Annual, and I'm PISSED!

I'm PISSED because UPS had the book Saturday when they said they tried to
deliver it by found my office closed. They had it Sat but did not deliver
it yesterday, or this morning or this afternoon until 4:30.

I'm PISSED because I have been taking and collecting images of diners for
20 years, and Mark came up with such stunning diner images for the book
that now I have to go out and start all over again.

I'm PISSED because my image of the North Rose Window of Notre Dame was
supposed to be the first image in the book, but somehow, Larry Colen hacked
into the Blurb computer and slipped his gorgeous flame abstract in ahead of
mine.

have for 28mm and 35mm) and I'd have to use scale focussing, so a bit
haphazard. Then there's the question of whether a Pentax film-era lens and a
Leica sensor could produce images of any technical quality worth showing...

I don't have an interchangeable-lens Fuji, so that's out.

Maybe an adapter for my Olympus E-3. The lens would become a 48-70. How would
that be on the sensor? I remember my stunning Zeiss lenses turned to shit when
I used them with a 4/3rds adapter. And there are reports of lens getting stuck.
Plus, stop-down metering. Why would I bother, really?

So, sorry mate. Ain't gonna happen.

2018-05-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I could fit a Pentax lens on the Leica SL body with an adapter. But I sold off
all my good Pentax lenses that I would want to shoot with when I sold the K100
body.

Time has marched on. My photography today is done with the Leica M-D typ 262 or
the Light L16 most of the time.

I appreciate the PDML Annual and applaud what everyone is doing in it!

I have my Pentax MX and a 24-35mm lens, but the cost of one roll of film to
buy, develop, scan and contact-print is £30-. To get 3 photos worth submitting
would take at least ten rolls. Then I'd need to resuscitate a filing system for
negs and contacts (all my old ones are in the loft). So I'm not going back to
film.

For the cost of that perhaps I could buy an adapter to put the lens on my Leica
M typ 262, but it wouldn't bring up the frames lines, or work the rangefinder
mechanism, so framing would require an accessory viewfinder (which in fact I
have for 28mm and 35mm) and I'd have to use scale focussing, so a bit

Most years I do struggle to find any that I am really confident about
submitting. Last year, I had the Blue and Beige image from Santa Fe, which
was a no-brainer, but nothing stood out like that for me this year, so I
agonized for quite a while.

I prefer to have spell check ON and auto-correct OFF. That way I can
see the words spell check doesn't find in its dictionary and either
add them or let spell check supply the correct spelling.

I do the same.. but sometimes I click on the wrong thing after that! :-)

That leaves only the problem of finding the correct word in the first

I'm more often substituting "word" (words with friends) for "work" -
must reform!

Spell check and auto-correct start with a "small" dictionary. If you type a
word that's not in that dictionary spell check will flag the word and if you have

Re: PDML Photo Annual #10 Coming in 2018

Nope, I actually meant what I said. My Samsung phone has excellent screen.
I even think that the phone firmware is playing tricks on me when showing
photos. I've a good screen for my desktop computer at home and it is
naturally the best - big and properly calibrated. But the cell phone
surprises me.

As for the glasses - last year was the first I actually bought myself a
special pair of office glasses - multifocals with limited range (up to 2
m), so my eyesight ain't gettin' any better...

Nope. I was shooting with both Canon and Pentax in 2007 and I have

Okay, I guess I could use an old Pentax photo, but the last time I shot
with Pentax was apparently 2007. IE looking through Lightroom and
reading the metadata.

And I was not as good a photographer then.
