I think they are - the DS/DL series did very well, and have added a number of converts, the K100D is selling like crazy and is receiving good media coverage and good reviews, and the K10D offers a lot for the money and some innovative features, and, apart from this list, is generating a lot of good buzz. The only down side - if you can call it that - is that the world of the DSLR changes rapidly, and it may be hard for Pentax to keep up with Canon, or even Nikon. Re: congrats to pentax
Well, a camera that makes your 99th percentile is pretty good. I've no idea what a K1D would be like ... maybe features wouldn't be added, but some might be greatly improved. Personally, I'd like to see, even as an add on in place of the grip, an alarm clock/coffeemaker/TV combo, so the camera can get me up in time to catch an early sunrise and I can tune to the weather channel to see if I should get out of bed. If you ask me, neither of those will ever show up in a K-mount DSLR. My wishlist for the K1D. 12.4MP DX format sensor. 5fps with 8fps in High Speed crop mode (approx 6.8MP at 2x crop). 20 RAW and 45+ JPEG Buffer. 30+ segment metering, spot metering linkable to active AF point. 1/8000 shutter, 1/250 flash sync. ISO 50-6400 with current noise levels at 100-3200 (I expect 6400 to be almost unusably noisy, but it's a life-saver in the right situation). Removable grip. Body takes current Li-Ion pack or AA/CR-V3. grip takes 2 current packs, 3 CR-V3's or 6AA's on a carrier or a high-capacity Li-Ion of approximately 2500mAh (a la Nikon EN-EL4a). Aperture simulator, multi-segment metering with non-A lenses (via data input like Nikon D2/D200 and SR system in K10D/K100D). 100% finder at .95x magnification with auto darkening outside the crop-line for HSC mode a la D2Xs. Improved AF algorithm and more powerful AF motor. SR and anti-dust. Full Sealing. All major controls accessed via buttons and wheels. Dual meter readouts vertically along the right side of the finder so that flash exposure compensation and ambient exposure can be displayed at the same time (like EOS 3 and later EOS 1's). Exposure Compensation Priority + Shift mode added (Allows standard Nikon/Canon style program shift with instant exposure compensation on the other wheel, like dual-wheel Canon's can do). Built-in IR flash commander (Pop-up RTF-style or just perched on the prism) with 3 group command ability for AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ, also functions as IR AF assist (like Canon ST-E2). No actual RTF flash. Price? $4000USD. In other words a D2Xs in K mount with additional battery compatibility and a removable grip, Hyper-Program and and some improvement. For a similar cost. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

But that's the spec and price point I'd aim for with a better-than-K10D body. A $2500 body would be more likely, but wouldn't spec out that well (well, I'm assuming that Nikon is not padding the price of the D2Xs too much). I'd much rather see a K1D than a 645D. I don't think the 645D is particularly viable in todays market, but a serious pro body from Pentax, with SR and D2X level performance would probably sell much better and give Pentax a true flagship, which they haven't had in the AF era. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

The only down side - if you can call it that - is that the world of the DSLR changes rapidly, and it may be hard for Pentax to keep up with Canon, or even Nikon. Still, I think those who are not in need of the latest and greatest fluff offerings, will be quite satisfied with Pentax for some time. I cannot help but wonder if there will be a K1D ... Shel I don't anticipate one. While the K10D doesn't quite come up to my hopes as far as frame rate and flash sync speed are concerned, it's good enough for well over 99% of my scenarios. And even there the frame rate will probably get updated in a K10Dn/K20D in a year or two. So - what would be added in a K1D? Full frame? Aperture simulator? Hold on a second. Now Pentax has to make money, not to burn it. Body with this kind of features would be a certain loss. Do you think D2Xs and similar bodies are profitable products? Think again... - Original Message - From: Adam Maas [EMAIL PROTECTED] Not to mention using proven, off the shelf parts, unlike much of the 645D (including the sensor). REPLY: The 645D chassis, mirror box, finder system, shutter assembly are right off the shelf. The camera electronics is almost certainly identical to the K10D or K100D just redesigned for a different circuitry board. Much of the image processing electronics is proably similar to the K-mount offerings. Pål -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

I expect that whether or not we see a higher-spec 35mm-class DSLR will depend mostly on the success of the K10D. If the camera turns out to justify the current excitement (which has gone way beyond the current-Pentax-user crowd) and proved to be a wild success, we assuredly see a higher-spec model. If not, then probably not... -- Mark Roberts Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com 412-687-2835 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
