Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-12-09 Thread vagskal

The iPad finally got released in my country so I got it for an enhanced
iPeng experience, and iPeng delivered as usual! Great work. But I do
miss the ability of iPeng on iPhone/iPod Touch to play an album by just
clicking the album art.

One quick question: I would like the iPad to stay awake while in the
charger stand when iPeng is on the Now Playing screen. I know I can go
to iPeng options and set this and then revert to the Now Playing
screen, and I know that I in the iPad options can set the iPad to never
autolock. But both these settings will drain the battery when the iPad
is not charging. Is there a way to get the iPad to stay awake only when
it is connected to the charger? If not, would you consider adding a
button on the Now Playing screen to toggle the stay awake option?

(Sorry if this has been asked before or if it is an iPad issue.)

Yes, you are not the first one but I'm sorry, this will not be coming
back.
The reason is consistency. There are now cases (Cover Wall) where you
have to tap artwork to open a menu so I don't want to have the same
action have different meanings depending on context (in this case:
depending on screen layout since it's even the same menu!)

Do you have the Song Lyrics plugin installed (NOT the old lyrics

Also a question of interpretation in editing the script.

One has to insert one's own user name, that's obvious.

But, where the script says

does one replace the whole of that expression by the actual name or
should the x symbols remain, that is are they present just to attract
human attention or do they have a genuine role to play?

I do have my home network IP address added to iPeng so it's eventually

[SlimDevices: Plugins] USB external hard drive for VortexBox Applicance...advice needed

2010-12-09 Thread radish112

Hi.

I recently purchased a 1TB VortexBox Appliance (VBA). Things are are
working fine, and it's time for me to begin thinking seriously about
purchasing/using an external drive to backup the files stored on the
VBA.

I am considering purchasing a WD Elements Desktop USB 2.0 external hard
drive.

For those of you who already own a VBA and are successfully backing it
up (garym, are you out there?), I have a couple of questions:

1. What USB external hard drive are you using?
2. If I click on the Backup icon on the VBA GUI, I'm instructed to
Please attach your USB drive to your VortexBox. Once your drive is
attached you can reload this page by clicking on the backup icon. Is
backing up really as simple as plugging a new out-of-the-box USB hard
drive into the VBA and following these instructions?

Thanks,

Steve

I use iTunes 10.0.0.8, should that version work?

I would read the rest of this thread for tips - you probably also need

you are best to look for someone who has already got it working.

If this script/task does prove to be of value to the OSX community,
then it might be worthwhile organizing a plug-in to start stop it

To avoid having to cater for these variable start up mechanisms.

See Apple's article you quoted on Creating a Startup Item.

It seems to imply that you can still create a startup item, but that
launchd is preferred. And it gives further references.

The real problem is that a fresh installation of 10.6 will not contain
a StartupItems folder, so it would need to be created.

I've been playing with the script, trying using StartupItems and trying
(using Lingon) creating a launchd item.

I've almost certainly done something wrong, as I can see (from Activity
Monitor) that sleepwatcher is running, but there's no log. As I haven't
switched off the way I am currently preventing sleep, I've no idea if
the script is working.

I won't have time for a while to do much further checking.

I run Squeezebox Server at login, not boot so I'm not sure quite how it
works. Lingon is an easy way of creating the relevant launchd plist.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-12-09 Thread ukhc

I've searched this thread and the Ipeng manual but haven't been able to
find an answer to a specific setup question, hopefully someone here
could confirm if what I'm planning is possible.

With the Squeezebox Duet it's possible to use the wireless controller
in bridged mode, where there is no wireless network available... I'm
wondering if this bridged connection mode is also possible with an
Ipod touch running Ipeng, to control a transporter which is only
connected via a wired network.

I checked in the Ipeng manual and it only mentions searching for a
server on the wireless network, but nothing about using a bridged
connection via the players wireless system to talk to the server via
the wired network.

Is this possible? Thanks for any advice.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2010-12-09 Thread gharris999

Would all this be easier if ReallyPreventStandby had a CLI request
like:

reallypreventstandby isidle

..returning 1 for yes and 0 for no?

I would think that that would make the script that SleepWatcher has to
execute much simpler...something along the lines of:

Code:

  #!/bin/bash

  SBSHOST=127.0.0.1
  CLIPORT=9090

  function SBSIsIdle {
  nc $SBSHOST $CLIPORT EOF0
  reallypreventstandby isidle
  exit
  EOF0
  }

  ISIDLE=`SBSIsIdle`

  if [ $ISIDLE == 1 ]
  then
  echo 'Idle..'
  echo $ISIDLE
  exit 0
  else
  echo 'Not idle..'
  echo $ISIDLE
  exit 1
  fi

This way ReallyPreventStandby can do all the heavy lifting: monitoring
player states, keeping track of the idle time-out, watching for library
rescans, watching for firmware updates, etc, etc.

Probably the script will still need to use telnet and expect rather
than nc since I don't see any way to make nc work with the 'login' CLI
request.

A thought:

If your existing method is already running, then my guess is that this
script will rarely be called.

If you remove the --quiet option from the start up item then the
script will become distinctly chattier, and will make log entries each
time the system sleeper calls it.
You would, then, see a log entry when the system does eventually sleep.
At present I don't think you will.

i.e. edit the following line in the file Squeezebox_DenySleep:

sudo -H -u $USER_TO_RUN /usr/local/sbin/sleepwatcher -d -V
-a/Library/StartupItems/Squeezebox_DenySleep/sbplayers_inactive
--quiet 1$HOME/Library/Logs/Squeezebox_DenySleep.log 21

to become:

sudo -H -u $USER_TO_RUN /usr/local/sbin/sleepwatcher -d -V
-a/Library/StartupItems/Squeezebox_DenySleep/sbplayers_inactive
1$HOME/Library/Logs/Squeezebox_DenySleep.log 21

Another thought:

One might also create a script suitable for use as a login item,
rather than a system start up item. I'll give that some thought as well
as a launchd item. Ideally one only wants to run the task when the
server itself is running.

Personally, I start the server at boot because I use it without
actually being logged in.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] squeezecast questions

2010-12-09 Thread maggior

I downloaded and installed the app tonight. It was easy to setup and
connected to my server very easily. I verified that it does play FLAC
natively and gaplessly!! I'm very happy with the app. There is
obviously still some work to be done, but in general it works well!!

Once it is streaming, it's stable. I found I had to start it playing
from within the squeezecast app and then take over control via iPeng,
otherwise the connection with the server would be lost. Not a big deal
once you understand that. Once the stream is going, I can switch albums
very easily. Pausing and resuming playback seems to loose the server
connection too.

What really impressed me was that while squeezecast was playing, it
didn't skip a beat as I checked my email, facebook, and surfed the
internet with safari.

I look froward to future updates to this app.

I'm not sure (will send you a longer e-mail on this tomorrow).
There are people here on the forum that have succeeded in doing this. I

You somehow have to make sure you find your Receiver's network and
connect the iPod to it and then also make sure it routes the
communication to the IP address of your server.
I doubt you will ever get artwork from online sources this way.
I'd just buy a cheap access point, they are at what, 40$ these days?

 I checked that last one.
Yes, exactly. I've updated ReallyPreventStandby with the proposed CLI
code.

You can experiment with it by adding
http://srvrpowerctrl.googlecode.com/svn/beta.xml to the Additional
Repositories on the SBS Settings-Plugins page. Then install
ReallyPreventStandby BETA. Or, alternately, directly download the beta
version from
http://srvrpowerctrl.googlecode.com/svn/ReallyPreventStandby_beta.zip
and manually install the plugin.

On OSX, go into the ReallyPreventStandby settings page and put in some
kind of innocuous command for the Inhibit standby command..something
like ls -l. That will keep the plugin from doing anything other than
keeping track of whether or not SBS is really idle. Then you can test
with the:

reallypreventstandby isidle

..cli request. While you're testing, you can edit the
ReallyPreventStandby/Plugin.pm file and change the INTERVAL value on
line 58 to a smaller number, say 2. That way, rather than taking 20
minutes (60*20) to go from not-idle to idle, it will go to idle in 2*20
seconds.

I'm working on an OSX sleep-inhibit app that can be called directly
from the plugin. We'll see what progress I make towards that and if I
can make it so it doesn't share the same defects as jiggler
caffeine...i.e. keeps the monitor on when it doesn't need to be.

On linux with gnome, ReallyPreventStandby calls gsession-inhibit, a
small utility that I wrote that should prevent sleep. The C source
code is included with the plugin. To use this app, you'll need to run
the
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/ReallyPreventStandby/bin/unix/debian-install.sh
script. All that script does is update the /etc/sudoers file so that
the squeezeboxserver user has permission to execute gsession-inhibit
under the currently loged in gnome user via sudo -u username.

Finally, mrw, you might want to look at modifying your SleepWatcher
script so that it also does a CLI call to SrvrPowerCtrl. I've added a
new CLI request to that plugin too. Calling:

srvrpowerctrl setwakealarm

..will cause SrvrPowerCtrl to schedule a system wakeup in order to
service any pending alarms. If your SleepWatcher script determines
that the system SHOULD sleep, then it could call srvrpowerctrl
setwakealarm to force SrvrPowerCtrl to schedule the next wakeup.
