The 169.254.xxx.yyy IP block is the range reserved for AutoIP (see
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3927 ) - AutoIP is used by PC (Windows)
clients to assign themselves an IP address if they are not able to get
an address from a DHCP server. Probably this means that either the OP's
client has had its DHCP disabled, or that his Gateway/Router is not
running a DHCP server; but it might be a one time drop out, so try
resetting the NIC (or rebooting the PC) since this may be sufficient to
force it to grab an address via DHCP...

The Spotify terms conditions say you may only play its streams on

are not allowed to rebroadcast its streams to unknown or non authorised
players. This is probably a reasonable deal for Spotify to protect its
revenues. So if Triode would attempt to do what you want, he would soon

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Spotify Premium Plugin (Beta)

2012-07-02 Thread AndrewFG

Hi Triode,

I have spent a few days extending Whitebear so that your Spotify plugin
also appears in the browse tree of the ContentDirectory, and it more or
less works fine now. (Whereas by contrast, the Logitech Spotify plugin
does not work at all). Nevertheless I encountered a couple of
difficulties, where perhaps you could help me.

Whitebear uses the CLI to browse the library directory, command the
players, and get player status feedback -- specifically commands like

Code:

  spotify items i j item_id:1.2.3

  [player_mac] spotify playlist play item_id:1.2.3

  [player_mac] status

My questions are:

1) I find that sometimes the library browse query does not return the
proper CLI *count* result. For example -spotify items 0 1
item_id:new_tracks- often only returns *count:1* even though on the
player's native browser, there are many new tracks. I suspect there may
be some caching going on, and that your plugin may not be interrogating
Spotify to update the current real value of count. Is there a way to
ensure the query returns the full proper value of count?

2) The library browse query -spotify items 0 1 item_id:radios- seems
not to return items that are playable via the -[player_mac] spotify
playlist play item_id:1.2.3- command? Any tips about what I may be doing
wrong here?

3) When a player is playing a Spotify item, how would I properly use the
-[player_mac] status- query to determine the actual Spotify item_id of
the track being played? And how would I retrieve the track's meta data
and cover art url?

Hoping you can help.

PS it looks like really great plug-in.

1) Did you try the latest build of Whitebear?

3) Do you have LAME installed? If not does installing it cause the

2) track transcoded to MP3 (but transcoded MP3 is only offered if you

I don't know your Onkyo, but some players are -- shall we say -- not

your Onkyo ought to accept and play offer 1) above. However, quite a

to accepting and playing offer 2) above; but you don't have LAME

i) Check the specifications of your player. Does it support PCM? If so,
then it OUGHT to be accepting offer 1), and in this case there is

ii) Install LAME, and try again. In which case offer 2) will be made,

database structure, whereas you are talking about the user
interface...
In the current model you can issue the following CLI requests, and they
will respond with the respective list of all albums, artists, genres,
years etc. But currently there is no CLI query that could cover any
other kind container such as compilations.
Code:

  albums 0 999
  artists 0 999
  genres 0 999
  years 0 999

If someone could be persuaded to extend the CLI interface then they
should probably add a containers command that would work as follows:
Code:

  containers 0 999
  ...returns the following response
  containers 0 999 id=1234 title=Compilations count=1

Such a containers command would be open ended and allow construction
of other kinds of containers than Compilations. However in the first
instance the containers 0 999 request would only return one such
container having the title Compilations. With such a CLI request
added, you could then step down the browse tree using the existing
standard CLI request filtering logic:
Code:

  containers 0 999
  == returns the following response
  containers 0 999 id=1234 title=Compilations count=1

  ...then...
  albums 0 999 container_id:1234
== returns all ALBUMS in Compilations

I think such an extension would address the underlying database and CLI
changes that would be needed to support what you are asking to see in
the UI.

However, the above proposal is (IMHO) not the same proposal as your
bugs. As I said before your bugs are asking for a UI change, whereas I
am talking about a database architecture and query structure
extension...

I had some offline discussions with Ap15e and with his kind help we
discovered that the problem is because when Whitbear issues a query to
Squeezebox Server CLI with artists 0 300 the latter returns the entry
id%3A3123 artist%3AVarious%20Artists two times in its response.

In the case of Ap15e he has 262 artist entries in his artist database
so Whitebear thinks it must pass on 262 items to the Android UPnP
control point. But since Various Artists is a duplicate, the second
copy gets eliminated, and so there are finally only 261 items in the
list. This explains why Ap15e sees the error when Whitebear trips over
the no longer existent index 261 entry...

It is a mystery to me why the Squeezebox Server CLI makes a duplicate
of Various Artists. Perhaps it is because Ap15e has an actual artist
called Various Artists, and he also has compilation albums that
Squeezebox Server names as by Various Artists, and therefore perhaps
Squeezebox Server is not clever enough to know that these two are in
fact the same name ???

= This is clearly a bug in Squeezebox Server.

However, now that I know about it, I can modify Whitebear to work
around this problem.

I am guessing the problem with the years folder is due to a similar
duplication. (Perhaps this time between the explicit year 0 and the
implicit no year = 0 ...)

So, the lesson I learned here is that with large libraries you need to
give the Revue a few moments to catch up.The UPnP Media Server
 ContentDirectory service defines two actions
called Browse() and Search().
Many client applications ignore the Search action and instead use only
the Browse action to download a local image of the remote content
directory into a local database, and then they use their own search
algoritms to find things within that local image database.

From your description, it sounds like the Revue is doing just this...

The benefit is that once the local image is built, the searches can be
faster and more sophisticated. The disadvantage is that it takes time
to build the local image in the first place.

2) The UPnP Server functionality. This is the new beta functionality

But don't worry, the Whitebear is still around (and getting better all

SBS on the second machine) should select whichever of the formats it can
play best.

Now Whitebear is offering PCM, MP3 and FLAC. And apparently SBS is
choosing the PCM offer. This is a pretty stoopid choice since in fact
it cannot play PCM!! It shoul have chosen either the FLAC or the MP3
offer...

This is a bug in SBS that needs to be fixed in due course. (Either by
supporting playing of PCM streams, or by not choosing PCM from the
Content Directory's offers...)

Fortunately I can quickly make a workaround in Whitebear to fix this.
Expect it in the next Whitebear release in about ten days.

Let me know.Yes. That would be fine thanks.

PasTim;635123 Wrote:
I do notice that the content range in the last flac log looks very
strange and there are errors Requested Range Not Satisfiable and
Range: bytes=0-1 looks weird, but then I don't know the protocol. It is my
theory that these HTTP Range requests are the root of the
problem with the Humax. They are certainly very unusual, and I have
encountered no other player that makes such.

As you notice, before starting a transaction, it does a HTTP HEAD
Range: bytes=0-0 request (read the response headers corresponding to a
GET of one byte); and if that fails, it does a HTTP GET Range:
bytes=0-1 (actual read of two bytes).

The release version of Whitebear accepts such range requests when
transcoding music because it CAN deliver these first one or two bytes.
However in the test version I sent you, I decided to see what would
happen if Whitebear would reject such range requests (416 Requested
Range Not Satisfiable) because, even if it can deliver the first 1 or 2
bytes, it would later be in a pickle if asked to deliver the NEXT one or
two bytes. This is because when transcoding via flac.exe and lame.exe
you can never be exactly sure of the time offset in the input file that
would be needed in order to deliver a coresponding byte offset in the
output stream. Not to mention that mp3 streams deliver data in samples
that are always larger than one or two bytes.

By the way, the reason it works with the Humax when playing native mp3
files is that, since the server has the actual mp3 file in its hands,
it CAN deliver exactly any range of bytes requested. Unlike the case
when double transcoding where the server has to make guesses on the
fly.

Frankly, I am not sure WHY the Humax is doing these fancy HEAD or GET
Range requests. I suppose it is trying to determine the full length of
the stream from the response Content-Range header before it actually
launches the full download of the music the stream using a proper full
blown GET.

As an aside, for example Windows Media Player, also always does two
full blown GETs, of which the first one is immediately aborted; so the
Humax is not alone in behaving oddly...

Of course we still have the other theory about the UUUs in the mp3 file
too...

So, in my next test build, I shall do two things: 1) revert to
accepting these odd Range requests, so that the response Content-Range
header is delivered properly, and 2) capture the delivered stream in
parallel to a disk file, so that you can then later test if the disk
file plays as a native file on the Humax (UUUs and all).

There is not much standardisation about the right way or wrong way to

followed that.

Currently there is no way to make Whitebear do it otherwise.

If you are interested to know what is going on: the player makes an
HTTP HEAD followed by an HTTP GET request for the stream, both having
an HTTP RANGE header in the request. And Whitebear returns an HTTP 206
Partial Content response. RANGE requests and Partial responses enable
server based seeking within the stream. The problem with server based
seeking is that when transcoding on the fly (especially when doing
multi step flac-pcm-mp3 trancoding), the server doesn't know exactly
where it is in the stream, nor can it calculate the full length of the
stream; and if the data is even one byte off, the resulting output is
garbage. = I expect this is what is going on here.

However I think I can fix this. Give me a few days and I will get back
to you on this thread. In the worst case, the solution might require
sacrificing server based seek on such transcoded files...

1) I cheat my test rig so that one of my players gets disguised to
look like your Humax (i.e. sending the HTTP headers from the log you

where the coverart can be found; and then PlugPlayer itself (should)
connect directly to SC and download the art. = So I wonder if perhaps
there is some kind of firewall problem that prevents PlugPlayer from
connecting to SC? (Just an idea...) Or maybe PlugPlayer has a
settings to allow/disallow downloading of coverart??

 Whitebear basically offers to
the player a list of all music formats that it can deliver; and then
the player/client chooses from the list whichever one it prefers.
Normally Whitebear offers PCM first in its list (because PCM is the
only must offer format) and so very often the player/client just
chooses the first offer. = If you want, you could try changing the

Favorites.

However, I encountered difficulties with Favorites that refer to remote
radio or podcast urls. It seems that sometimes a remote radio or podcast
url is a direct link to a music stream, but sometimes the remote url is
an INDIRECT link to a playlist file (.pls or .m3u format) which is a
text file that contains a text list of one or more urls pointing to
real music streams.

Now unfortunately, many existing UPnP / DLNA players do not really
support such playlist text files. So the conclusion is: Yes, I could
include Favorites in a next version of Whitebear, but unfortunately No,
it would not support the indirect playlist variety (.pls or .m3u) of
remote radio or podcast streams; only the direct url (.mp3, .ogg, .wav,
.flc) variety is supportable.

I don't know if this is sufficent? = What do you think?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iPad UPnP/DLNA Digital Media Controller Apps

2011-05-12 Thread AndrewFG

Hi,

I am the author of Whitebear Media Server.

So far I have been refining Whitebear by testing its interworking with
Windows based UPnP/DLNA Digital Media Controllers. But now that I have
an iPad myself :-) I want to expand the pro-active development of
Whitebear to also optimise its interworking with the most popular iPad
UPnP/DLNA DMCs.

So my question is: Which is/are the most popular (respectively the
best) iPad UPnP/DLNA DMC apps ?

physically located on the laptop. I *think* this was the same situation
as with the previous version. It works neither with MP3 not FLAC.Sorry but I
don't really understand what you mean here. Whitebear plays
files in several modes; can you please clarify which of the following
applies in your case?

1) Native Libaray / Native Player: In WMP 12 (say) you browse the
Squeeze Center library YourLibraryName (by Whitebear) - you select a
track and select Play To SqueezeboxName (by Whitebear) - the
respective track should play on the respective Squeezebox. This is the
most seamless mode.

2) Native Libaray / Other Local Player: In WMP 12 (say) you browse the
Squeeze Center library YourLibraryName (by Whitebear) - you select a
track and select Play - the respective track should play on WMP. There
are two sub-sets of this:

2a) where the source and destination have the same format (no
transcoding)
2b) where the source and destination do not have the same format
(transcoding done by Whitebear)

3) Native Libaray / Other UPnP Player: In WMP 12 (say) you browse the
Squeeze Center library YourLibraryName (by Whitebear) - you select a
track and select Play To Some_Other_UPnP_Player - the respective
track should play on Some_Other_UPnP_Player.

4) Other Libaray / Native Player: In WMP 12 you browse the WMP library.
You select a track and select Play To SqueezeboxName (by Whitebear) -
the respective track should play on the respective Squeezebox. There
are two sub-sets of this:

4a) playing an MP3 file
4b) playing a lossless file

5) For completeness, please note that there is one other option Other
Libaray / Other Player but this is irrelevant since Whitebear is not
involved in any way...

Please also note that in the case of 4b) above, the behaviour may
depend on the file format. If the file is a format supported natively
by WMP 12 it works fine. Whereas if it is a format (like flac) where
you need an add-in filter for WMP to support it, then it depends on the
filter you have installed. In my testing, I found that some filters only
support flac streams coming into WMP, but do not support flac streams
going out of WMP. Personally I found that the flac filter from
XIPH.ORG was excellent.

And below is what SBS outputs when I double click on a file local to the
laptop in the Play To controller in WMP12. The file appears in the SBS
playlist as it should, it just doesn't play. The Squeezebox screen says
 connecting and then stopped
The log actually indicates that Whitebear is doing everything that it
should be doing. Namely, the following steps are ocurring:

1) WMP Play To command sends the UPnP SetAvTransportUri to Whitebear,
passing CurrentUri url_shown_below
2) Whitebear translates this command to SqueezeCenter CLI language and
forwards it as player_mac_address playlist add url_shown_below
3) The Squeeze player log indicates that has recieved the request and
that it is loading up this file to play

http://192.168.1.5:10243/WMPNSSv4/2694848959/0_e0IzNTI4NDNDLTM0REMtNDQ1QS1CMkM4LUE3Q0M2MTBGQUIyNH0uMC40.mp3

So, if the Squeezebox is really not playing the file, then actually it
is not Whitebear's fault! You could test this by using the SC UI to
manually try to connect to the above mentioned remote url stream and
see what happens. You won't see anything in the Whitebear logs, since
it has already done its part in telling SC and WMP to talk together.
However you might want to try a Shark trace to see if WMP returns HTTP
200, HTTP 40x, or nothing at all. If it returns nothing at all, then
you probably have a fire-wall issue...

the native player from the WMP-12 library but physically on BIG, they
will play successfully, both MP3 and FLAC. However, if I try to play
files from the WMP-12 library but which are on LAPTOP, they do not
 play.

 Does this make sense?Hmmm.

First of all, it is definetely NOT Whitebear's fault...

As you suggest, it sounds like a permissions issue. The UPnP/DLNA
mechanisms do not have any security permission controls, so in theory
they can be mis-used to bypass normal file security. Alice grants Bob
access to her files; Bob is a UPnP server; Eve asks Bob -- via UPnP
calls -- for one of Alice's files; Bob serves the file = Security
breach !!

Now it looks like WMP12 is in fact being very well behaved. (Hats off
to Microsoft!) Because in this case, Bob does share public files (via
UpnP) with Eve, but he blocks sharing Alice's private files with Eve.

Conclusion: try moving the files on your laptop from Alice's folder to
Public. Or try changing the permissions on Alice's folder to Share /
Everybody (you have been warned!). Alternatively look into Windows
settings for Sharing my Music and/or WMPs settings for Sharing my
Music...

 I
will have a look at this, and try to fix.
 2) If I switch from controlling the Squeezebox through WMP-12, while
leaving the control window open, and I play something else on the SB
through the SBS web interface, when I actually do close the WMP-12
windows, the track will stop playing. I guess WMP sends out an off
command when it quits, but in this case it's not the desired behaviour.Yes
you may consider this to be a PITA but the approach of Whitebear is
that it tries to obey all commands sent to it (including the playlist
clear command when WMP closes)
 3) It seems that in WB is launched while the Squeezebox is somehow
disconnected from the server, the media renderer doesn't get set up.
Then, then the SB connects back to the server, WB doesn't seem to react
and set it up. It needs to be relaunched for this to take place. (Maybe
I didn't wait long enough?)I don't have the code in front of me, but
 basically Whitebear has a
number of heartbeat timers that periodically check if the library
status changed, or if the player count changed, or if the server hit an
unexpected error and needs a restart. These timers are random intervals
up to 90 seconds, so if you are unlucky you might need to wait 3-4
minutes...

PS a Shark capture refers to a program called WireShark which is THE
toll of choice for capturing and logging TCP/IP traffic on a network...

Wigster;628259 Wrote:
Aha: well, if you get some DirectShow codecs (such as the shark007 pack,
for example), then it will play FLACs (as well as OGGs etc).
Then you can also download something called WMP Tag Plus, which will
actually allow it to support adding the FLACs to the library and get
all the meta-data correctly.I couldn't get the Shark codecs for Flac support
 in WMP 12 (the server
was down), so I tried the Xiph ones from here
http://www.xiph.org/dshow/

With that codec installed, and running my not-yet-released new version
of Whitebear, for Flac files I could do both Play on WMP 12, and Play
To a Squeezebox.

So please wait a few days until I formally release this updated
version.

2011-03-29 Thread AndrewFG

indifference_engine;621752 Wrote:
Thanks, I have sent you a pm with my reply!Interesting. Your earlier log
proved that your WMP client is discovering
the Whitebear media server and all players. And the current log shows
that your client is 1) downloading the device description documents, 2)
downloading the service control protocol documents, and 3) subscribing
to all the service event handlers. So far so good. But about 2 seconds
later it is unsubscribing again. Clearly it is finding something in the
DDD or the SCPD that it does not like. I have read somewhere that
perhaps some Microsoft clients (e.g. the XBox) will not accept a server
whose DDD does not contain the word microsoft in it's name. (UPnP is
an open standard so go figure that one out...) You could perhaps test
this by changing the name of your library in SC to something including
microsoft, and then doing a restart. An alternative possible reason
is that the current DDD contains some extensions for DLNA and --
believe it or not -- for Microsoft, that are allowed according to the
UPnP specs, but perhaps unexpected by the WMP client. So I will also
prepare and send you some test versions that selectively eliminate
these extensions one-by-one. That will hopefully allow us to get this
thing working. (However, it may mean that other clients that expect
those extensions will now not work...)

...players look and time out. In other words, I'm still in the same

- You have a music library in JRMC15 (say)
- The library consists of native mp3 tracks
- The library tracks are local to JRMC (as opposed to imported from
Whitebear)
- JRMC is set to never transcode
- When you select such a track in JRMC and try to Play To a
Squeezeplayer (by Whitebear) the track does not play

Please confirm the above is a correct summary. Now a few questions:

1) When you do this Play To, do you see the new track url on the player
UI? If the new new track url is shown, what happens when you now press
Pause/Play on the player UI?
2) Try copying the same url above into Squeezebox web UI Radios; Tune
into Url - What happens now?
3) Try manually copying the same url above into any other player
different than JRMC (say Windows Media Player) - does the url play in
that player?
4) What kind of A/V software are you running? Does it have any kind of
smart firewall features?

- You have Whitebear running on a PC running Windows 2003

The problem starts when I try to stream anything from a server other

aside for the time being all your points about ports etc. since they
are probably irrelevant. Check what music format your client software
is trying to send to the Squeezeplayer; is it pcm, or mp3 or some other
format? The players can handle aac, mp3, flac and wma natively, and also
wav and pcm via Whitebear's proxy transcoder. Most clients have settings
whereby you can force them to deliver mp3 or pcm by transcoding the
original music format; as a first step I suggest to set your client to
force it to transcode to mp3; this is the lowest common denominator,
and once you get it working with that, you can experiment with settings
that delivery better quality audio.
