Thank you Bobby for the information. I met Joni a couple years after my
accident, when she was speaking at a church in Shawnee Mission, Overland Park,
Kansas. She is beautiful and so extremely talented, it is amazing how much
she has accomplished in her life. She also had to fight breast cancer a
few years ago and there was a video on the Internet with her and her husband
sharing this experience.. I remember seeing, the other side of the mountain
and it was so encouraging to see her accomplishments and milestones, she
accomplished in her life. I believe she may have been one of the oldest
living quadriplegic, but I could be wrong. It would be fun to see those movies

I've read a few that I'd like to pass along., One

My Soul purpose by Heidi Van Beiltz She became a C5,6 quadriplegic from
a car accident while doing a stunt in Hollywood. She was a stunning woman
in Hollywood when she had her accident back in the late 1980s early 1990s.
She talks about her close relationship with Melanie Griffith and also with
Willie Shoemaker. Willie Shoemaker himself was a jockey, he was involved in
a single person car accident while drinking and driving he is a C3,4
Quadriplegic.

Joni by Joni Erickison She became a quadriplegic in a diving accident in
1967. She does a lot of painting owns a radio station and runs a Christian
ministry. She also has an amazing website that is definitely worth looking
into. She wrote one book before she met her husband and wrote the second
book after she met her husband. She also has written about two or three other
books on Christianity disability.

The Other Side of the Mountain Part One by E.J Valens It's a story
about Jill Kinmont who was trying out for the Winter Olympics and broke her
neck to C4,5 in 1955 She just passed away this year. There are two books about
her one before she met her husband and another one after. There's also a

above this book is about when she met her husband and learning to live life
as a quadriplegic. She became a schoolteacher when she went to college

Many of those movies came from novels. I was wondering if any of you have

your review, good or bad, regarding any SCI-related novels.

I have a couple:

1. The Dive From Clausen's Pier. Fiction. By Ann Packer. [Also a movie to
add to the list, Jim]
This novel was riveting to me, at the beginning, because I was injured in
a diving accident and the details in this story were eerily similar; so
similar, in fact, that my sister started reading this book but couldn't
continue. However, the character with quadriplegia is really the secondary
protagonist in this novel, so about halfway through it became much less
interesting to me. Still worth a read if you need a beach book this summer.

2. Moving Violations. Non-fiction. By John Hockenberry.
John Hockenberry is an award-winning reporter who has worked for NPR, ABC
and NBC. John is paraplegic since a car accident at age 19, and this is his
memoir. I read this novel about five years ago and found it very
entertaining. John discusses his adjustment to disability, his travels around
the
world and some poignant inter-personal relationships. There's one story
involving his ex gf that is so unbelievable I still laugh to myself when I
think about it. The book suffers a bit by its length--at 350+ it could have
used a healthy editing--but overall it was a fun read.

Hi all,

Sorry to hear about your hospital experiences Ron. That was really rough
to come home in be by yourself right after surgery. I certainly hope that
you are shearing from dancing heal quickly..
I had a similar situation and I always wonder why our needs are still so
misunderstood in-hospitals. It is always a nightmare to have surgery, IV's
for a UTI, pneumonia, bowel blockages, wounds needing a wound VAC for two
months and then skin graft. One UTI caused a coma twice, intubation after
several surgeries. So many nurses have never suctioned.. They still don't
understand digitals and the bowel routine. I do believe I have had a member of
near-death experiences through hospitalizations. What are your opinions? I
have never heard of lorazepam. I'll have to look it up..

three weeks. Did have minimal sips of water but had the tube in my nose and
would throw up if i cheated. Every other day my father would come in and
between the two of us straining, I would attempt to get onto the bowell chair.
It was scary with no results, pain, passing out on the chair but it had to be
done and the nurses werent going to do it. I normally straight cathe
independently, but was hooked up to a foley and that got plugged up and i went
dysreflexic bad, and they still didn't believe it was clogged til I went
crazy. The same hospital that taught me how to live as a quad and about
dysrelexia, suddenly didn't know what i was referring to. I told the
infectious
disease doc to please look it up and at least prescribe something to lower
my blood pressure during these times. It was crazy to be in bed and deal
with so much, lorezapam helped me from going crazy at night. I just kept
hoping I could get out of there without any secondary complications, but I
got c-diff. Then everybody treated me like I had the plague..wearing
gowns and masks. My family refused to wear them because it was pointless
because they were so involved with my care.my gf at the time and
father did about everything to keep the nurses happy. Somehow i made it out of
there and could very slowly and dangerously get in bed and cathe myself.
Dad went back to second shift the day I went home and i had to survive from 2
to midnight alone. I wasn't sure how fast or if I would fully recover. I
wouldn't say Im as good as b4 all that happenned , but Im good enough to
make it . Gf broke up with me, swim organization changed things so i couldn't
go back, counselor quit...and I fell pretty hard emotionally. Im still

Dear Dana,

Instead of placing obstacles in front of ailing patients, our elected
officials should be creating a long-term solution to fix the Medicare access

I demo'ed the m300 mid wheel drive last spring, it's much better then my
13 year old quickie p300. As for the head rest I can get by with a basic
one that we adjust once and leave it, I only need it when I tilt back. I
didn't have any issues with my knees spreading like they do with my quickie.
I wonder if the footrest was set low enough for you. The only issue I
have with the m300 is low ground clearance, I live in town and had no problems
but I'm thinking about driving again and need to find out about any
special lockdown that may be needed.

Subject: [QUAD-L] Power chair questions

I keep having problems with my Quantum 6000z and was told in may I will be
able to submit for a new power chair. I'm very happy about that!

I've got some questions for you guys about it... I'm thinking about
getting a permobil m300 which is a mid wheel chair.
The question I've got is about the head and foot rest systems. My chair
right now the feet are together which causes my knee's to open up which I
hate. On my current chair I've been using a gate belt around my thighs to
bring my knees closer together. I think this was due to my feet having to be
together due to the foot plate being one small piece of metal with ankle
straps and not being two plates that my feet can be separated.

My headrest never really has been comfortable because my head doesn't
really rest on it... It touches it if I recline a little though so I've
reclined the seat back and chair a little so my neck doesn't wear out and get
sore
so fast.
I need to make decisions on which headrest, foot rests, arm rests and seat
I want and was curious which you guys recommend?
Also what do you guys think of the permobil m300? Thanks in advance!

ended up doing was expanding the volume of my bladder, attaching a portion
of my intestine to my bladder and running it up through my abdomen and
creating a stoma to the right of my belly button.

I have had some mixed results, but for me it still is much better than what

I hear you too, Bobbie. I refuse to do any of those tests that docs
recommend for my age. I think it's my way of telling the universe to go --
itself. I don't control much, but I do control this. Larry

Larry, I hear ya. It is YOUR body and of you don't want to stay in bed for
X amount of months in bed, then don't.

I, personally have NEVER EVER seen an OBGYN or had a PAP smear or have a
mammogram. I'll never have a Colonoscopy or any other type of tests for
disease hunting. I've been plugging along doing this Quad living for
over 40 years now.

My 2 cents.Bobbie

Wow, guys, Some tough situations and even tougher people. I've had a 4 inch
sore on my butt for over 6 yrs. It just refuses to heal. We dress it twice
a day. It is not deep and doesn't tunnel. However, it is a wide open sore.
I sit on a Roho and fully expect to take this sore to the grave with me. I
simply cannot and will not spend the 12 months or more in bed that healing
would require. It burns and hurts like crazy some daysand nights.
However, I am 62 and 43 years post. I'm pretty sure I'm not nearly as
motivated as I once was.

I'm pretty ignorant to caring for a sore, other than the simple scrape. I
have seen quads down here who are using a vacuum device which is supposed
to facilitate the healing process. I've even seen some sitting in
wheelchairs. Have you tried this out yet?

Re: [QUAD-L] Hemorrhoids?

2014-03-14 Thread Quadius
I really wish I could get my bowel program down to an hour and a half like
it was when I was a new injury. Unfortunately I am now stuck with three
hour to four hour bowel care every other night. Most of the fecal matter is
evacuated in about two hours, but we often spend another hour and a half to
two hours waiting on the mucus to come down.

It's a significant amount of mucus and if I tried to wait until the next
morning to check for it, it creates a pretty bad mess. Not to mention the
fact that it is terribly uncomfortable for me.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Oh yeah, I do my bowel regimen in bed because of my high level of injury
does not allow me to sit comfortably in a shower chair in order to do the
procedure.

Thanks,
Quadius

Had gangrene from the surgeon leaving a fixator on my foot too long. I was on
wound vac for two months and then I had plastic surgery on my heel. They had
me on so much proteins I drank about 2 Insure per day and yogurt. My wound Dr
in the past had told me to take L-arginine was it which is a generic form, My
rehab doctor had told me to take 2-256 mg of Zinc when I had a sore Which is a
prescription. Dr. Oz says to eat Protein every 2 to 3 hours for a normal person
as we age.

Probably already know this.
