Try everything. You might even try the laying flat compared to laying on your
side, taking notes of just how difficult it feels to breathe in each position,
and seeing if it has gotten worse. It's not good for me breathing on my back
and even my pulse-ox is worse. I literally start taking notes with issues. That
way I can look back and say this started at this time, then this happened, etc.
Helps give perspective. Hang in there!

Took the dog on a walk. I was plugged in before I left.
I got 3 blocks away, then I had to call home, chair battery died.
At least I got the paperwork done on a new chair yesterday.
So now its sent to insurence. Hopefully no more than 2 months more.
I might be able to get a loner until then. We tried everything, wires, batteries, joystick.
Only thing left is the computer module. But insurence wont cover that, then buy a new chair.
Tried Ebay, they had a bunch, but not the correct kind.

[QUAD-L] Stuck, Help

2016-12-08 Thread greg
I find it interesting what makes people ask if you need help. I've been out a lot lately taking photographs.  I often stop at this 1 corner on just an average city street. It has lots of plants butterflies love. So I just sit there looking into a camera with 1 hand resting on it to move it around. I bet at least every 10 minutes a car will stop and ask if I need help. Yet today I was at a golf course and pulled into the gravel edge to get a photo of a red bird I'd never seen here. I did something you never do in gravel, tried to back up and turn. Just dug in and was Stuck… I was facing the wrong way to see most cars, but could see them just as they passed me. I started waving both arms as well as I could, most just drove by, a few waved back. Lots of cars, but walking people were to far away to hear me. Probably 15 minutes, but finely a worker pulled up. We had talked earlier about my camera, he suggested where he often sees birds. Luckily he pulled over to ask if I found anything. I was too stuck for just him to get me out, but the next car also stopped to help.

[QUAD-L] Stuck as frig on the school entrance hump

2014-04-21 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
I was out on my attachable handcycle today called the rio dragonfly. I got hung
up on the entrance ramp to the back of the school with the single front tire up
the bump and my wheelchair wheels down the bump on the street. I had my c5
grips on and tried and tried to go up to no avail, then tried to go down and
was getting hung up on the footrest and the coaster brake kept activating. At
this point Im about to break spokes and damage my handcycle so I did something
smartI stopped and evaluated the situation. I then took the c5 grips
off , took glasses off and tried to push using the handrims of the chair, but
it was too steep without a run at it. I always carry water, cathe materials,
cell, pocket knife so I wasn't to concerned. There were a few people that saw
me struggling and walked away to not get involved...this is typical in my
experience, some jut don't know how to help or want to be involved. Finally a
guy pulls in gets out of his car
and says, I see you all the time, don't you know how to drive that thing? I
just smiled and said could ya go to the back of the chair and gimme a push. he
pushed and I propelled the whole contraption up the steep curb. I thanked the
man repeatedly and was grateful he stepped up to the plate and helped. The
question I ask is would a pitbull stuck in the fence get help quicker than I
did?  The other thing I would tell new chair users is eventually you will get
in a sticky situation, rather than break things, tear out shoulders or get
someone else hurt, always stop and figure out the best plan of attack and carry
the necessities with you on your chair or in your van . We disabled folk have
to be aware and a little smarter than normal joes out there.

Ive had two seatbelts become jammed while I was out and had to cut them to use
restroom and get into van seat. Carry a multitool or a small pocketknife.

Well concerning the easiest seatbelt to operate alone I guess depends on the
individual. I tried the airline style and hated the weight and bulkiness but
they aren't to hard to open for some. I have decent thumb extension on my good
hand so I like the auto style, but like I said after a year or two they get
jammed. Velcro is so so getting off but at least it cant get stuck on ya.

When my belt was stuck I was going to ask one of those big truck dudes if they
would cut the belt but I didn't, lol.

I feel bad for all of you guys having all those complicated hospital stays. It
is such a drag all the continuous health conditions that we Quads have to deal

pressure sores that I don't have the patience to even be worried about. However
lately I know that there is something really wrong with my digestive system,
not the usual BS. I fear it is bad because I have experienced severe A.D.

I guess I'm just usually an optimist.  I can't fathom giving up. Yes, I have

I do all the tests, though this years colonoscopy will probably be the last.

I love life.  Even though I spend most of my time at home with my pc, music and

only thing that could be better would be living in FL!!!

Hi all,

Sorry to hear about your hospital experiences Ron. That was really rough
to come home in be by yourself right after surgery. I certainly hope that
you are shearing from dancing heal quickly..
I had a similar situation and I always wonder why our needs are still so
misunderstood in-hospitals. It is always a nightmare to have surgery, IV's
for a UTI, pneumonia, bowel blockages, wounds needing a wound VAC for two
months and then skin graft. One UTI caused a coma twice, intubation after
several surgeries. So many nurses have never suctioned.. They still don't
understand digitals and the bowel routine. I do believe I have had a member of
near-death experiences through hospitalizations. What are your opinions? I
have never heard of lorazepam. I'll have to look it up..

Yea, dancing. I just got my brand new power chair. Pete and I love to go
dancing at Jazz Festible's. So, I decided on night in a big open space to put
my chair in high and practice dancing. Get a feel of how this new chair
responds. So, I made quick left, quick right, quick forward, quick left and
quick backwards. I did this for about 10 minutes. That night Pete said ...
you have some broken skin here on your butt right next to where your wound was
earlier this year. It looks like Sherring. I told him about practicing dancing
and he agreed that that was the cause.
So, it looks as though our dancing days are over ... at least fast. We'll have
to stick to slow dancing ... fine with me.

recieved a tee-shirt that says If you can read this put me back into my
chair.

Lesson learned today: Don't leave home without my cell.

the floor also gets harder.

i would never wear a belt out by the pool. i have jumping dogs and young
grand kids that love to go for my joystick. my hands work pretty reasonable
for a quad but i don't think i could hold my breath long enough to unsnap a
lap belt especially if i was face down with the chair on top of me. i'll
take
a bonk from falling out first. (hasn't happened yet even hitting the power
button - conveniently located where i rest my hand to drive - going down a
ramp.) i am much more careful now though.

Re: [QUAD-L] Stuck

2006-07-11 Thread Lori Michaelson

When I posted that post about the female quadriplegic found dead in Florida because she apparently got stuck in the sand and in a park in the middle of the day in summer ... I thought that was total insanity to head out by herself like that for so many reasons. Primarily the god-awful heat! Since there was absolutely no one around in the park or nearby for a long time [long enough for her to end up dead] ... it was obviously too hot for even able-bodied folks to be out in such miserable heat in the middle of the day!

Anyway, like I said back then in my post ... I am so fortunate to have dozens and dozens and dozens of streets here in North Tucson whereby it is very quiet and serene yet I am always near houses and streets that will have only a few cars passing by ... usually not more than five or 10 minutes go by before I see someone.

However, Greg, I had a similar experience like you described as your second problem. It happened 4 1/2 years ago in my own subdivision! I was strolling along at a pretty good clip and I have found since then that might share does not like that very much and will automatically stop!

I was also thrown forward because of the momentum but I was able to sit back up. My problem was that I was unable to push the on/off button to turn my chair back on. Any other time, a car would be entry or leaving our subdivision of about 40 houses back then. But over 15 minutes went by and not a single car or person was in sight! I couldn't believe it.

Fortunately, it was not warm or too cold but I just sat there wondering what to do. I was actually sitting next to someone's house and, finally, the woman inside that house happened to be by her kitchen window and saw me sitting out there. She opened the window and asked if I was okay. I told her my problem and she came and pushed the button for me.

So see? Sometimes the worst can happen under almost the best of circumstances!

The only slightly scary thing that has happened to me during one of my strolls in my area here [in a bigger subdivision and neighborhood area than where we lived for years ago]... was when I went down the street to a very quaint park .7 miles from my home. As always, I had my dog with me and we were walking around the paved walkways inside the park as well as the grassy area. The park was deserted except for only one mother and her two little children that were playing on the play equipment.

On my way out of the park I heard the mother tell her little boy "oh look--there is a baby havalena!" For those of you who do not know what that is ... they are wild pigs found in the desert. They are nocturnal animals so they are rarely seen during the day. I had never seen one so I turned around to look. The little dark brown pig was sniffing a cactus shrub area that my dog had just been sniffing at only moments before!!!

Havalenas can take apart a dog in a matter of minutes. Unlike the mother and her children ... I obviously could not climb up the ladder on the playground equipment like they could if necessary. For the baby pig to be alone ... is very rare. I took a quick look and then began to zoom out of there ASAP.

As always, I told my husband where I was headed and he was probably going to drive my van over to pick me up at the park. He was just driving the van down the entrance road to the park as I was headed out. He stopped the van and I got in. We then drove the short distance to the parking lot to see if we could see the baby pig.

My husband is very familiar with the southwest because that is where he grew up. I told him what happened and he said that it was a good thing that I began leaving the park becausebaby pigs are never orrarely alone and that meant that the mama and/or papa was not far behind. The park is surrounded by desert so that is obviously where they were. Again, they are hardly ever seen during the daytime but I was very lucky not to still be in the middle of the parkOR out in the grass where my dog andI were only minutes before!

Even if I took a cell phone with me ... I would still tell someone the approximate area where I was going to be because there are so many things that can happen even with a cell phone. Like being in an area where there is no signal. Or dropping the phone, etc. etc. Etc..

The female quadriplegic'sfate in Florida has been closed by the medical examiner's decision but I still do not agree with what her final findings were so there is nothing like double or triple safety measures to take!

Back when I was still able to cruise around my neighborhood and general
vicinity every nice day, I was out of the neigborhood when I went over a
bump in the sidewalk a little too fast. My feet slid off the footrests,
and my butt slid forward (not off the chair.) I tilted the chair back so
I wouldn't slide out the rest of the way, and slowly made my way home.

I hit a hole in my backyard and was thrown forward. My head was between my
