Re: [QUAD-L] Question about lockdown systems.

2024-02-27 Thread Don Price
 Hi everyone!
Invacare is in business again and has released a rear-wheel drive Storm model.
I have one and so far it has worked well for me (I've been using it about a
year now.)It's probably very different from the old Storm model, but if you're
an Invacare fan it's worth looking into.
Mine has been equipped with an EZ-Lock system and it is working just fine. I
rarely have clearance issues going over speedbump or door thresholds.
Best wishes,Don.Invacare AVIVA STORM RX Power Wheelchair - Invacare

wheelchair reminded me the need to "understand" why dealers(salesman)
recommend certain chairs.
I have had Invacare all my life too. He brought the new Aviva and R-Trak
for me to look at.  I liked them both but I could not test drive them.
He kept saying that Invacare not reliable and various issues.

Does anybody have either of these chairs and use Ezlock?

Re: [QUAD-L] Question about lockdown systems.

2024-02-20 Thread wheelsdw
I am going through process of getting new electric wheelchair and trying
to get a model that has an ezlock for it.
I have invacare storm series but invacare went bankrupt, and dealer
wants me to switch to Quantum R-TRAK rear wheel drive.Does anybody with
ezlock have one for quantum chair?

I heard that ezlock is making one for R-TRAK  but I do not see it on
their list of wheelchairs.

Here is list from Ezlock.

Shelly, you can check out their list of wheelchairs on list at the link

I have a power wheelchair and an EZ lock system in my van. The one thing I
would warn about is to make sure they don't install that "single post" so low
on your chair, manual or not, that it interferes with bumps, curb cuts or
anything else. That's an issue I'm dealing with now.Jeff

I haven't had any problems with resistance, but have had some

superficial or low-grade cancer so it was removed.  The last
time I had a cystoscopy for my urologist to look in my urine
everything looked fine. That was August 31st of this year.

I have also had back-to-back
nosocomial infections (the two big superbugs to make matters
worse) that are commonly found in hospitals or clinics and
that is when they began to appear... the first one was after
my urologist wanted to be the first to change my catheter the
first 3 months after switching to an SP catheter and then they
have just continued. They cause severe bladder and kidney
pain. They are also multi-drug-resistant. The symptomatic
bacteria (2 superbugs present at the same time) were treated
with antibiotic injections of Rocephin but the pain did not go
away so I had another urine culture done last Friday and just
got the results today. Enterococcus species and Staphylococcus
Aureus - MRSA is what was found. It is sensitive to very
  little drugs.

I am currently awaiting
'what to do' from my urologist.. I just called them to see if
they got the results also and they have but the urologist has
yet to tell me what to do when he is not seeing patients and
for his nurse to get back with me.

Just about every website
says that SP catheters are supposed to cut down on infections
but I have had just the opposite happen.  The catheter changes
are done with extreme cleanliness and sterility. My home
health agency nurse who does them has done many catheter
changes and my live-in caregiver watches her and sees that she
  is doing everything correctly.

My question is:

Has anyone experienced some
resistance when trying to insert their suprapubic catheter
and/or had a tiny blood clot or tiny tiny blood flakes (that
quickly disappear) after a catheter change?

Thank you!

Re: [QUAD-L] Question for those with SP catheters

2018-11-08 Thread Lori Michaelson
Thanks for responding Danny! I *never ever *ask for my urine to be tested
for treatment unless the symptoms are so bad I can't stand it. I don't know
as I have any stones or not. I had some sediment (very little) in my
catheter that was taken out this morning which is very good for me. I have
never had a kidney stone.

Severe symptoms like chills and sweats usually indicate that you have a
fever which means that whatever bacteria you have that is causing it went
into the bloodstream (systemic). I am thankful that I do not have those but
the pain since October 11th has not let up very much & the Rocephin
injections is what they gave me for what they found on October 21st for
Proteus Mirabilis, MRSA & Acinetobacter Baumannii hoping that would work.
There were some days and nights that the pain was not fair but more than
enough days and nights that the severe bladder and lower back pain (that I
am familiar with and always indicative of bladder infections that have not
gone systemic) is beyond nightmarish.

I just looked at the results and what is in there and what the bacteria is
sensitive to (when antibiotics) and while I understand some of it I don't
understand all of it. In other words, it says that "Enterococcus Species"
(which is in my bladder) is sensitive to Cipro, Ampicillin and
Nitrofurantoin while *Staphylococcus aureus* is sensitive to Tetracycline,
Gentamicin & Cipro. But nitrofurantoin and vancomycin are also listed. WHAT
I DON'T UNDERSTAND is the less than sign (<) or the right-hand sign (>) in
front of numbers. I do understand that S stands for sensitive and R stands
for resistance.

I just have to wait for them to get back to me which I was hoping was going
to happen before the day is over today but it did not.

I just did Magic Bullets to start, then digit stim.
But finely "bagged" the whole thing. No more worries, hours of sweating,

Life changing for me. I was living my life around that schedule. So much
less worry, less embarrassing, faster, cleaner, no leaking, etc. I know
we all prefer things differnt, but I just can't see why its not done

I am a C5/6 quadriplegic due to a motor vehicle accident in 2000.

I am wondering what other quads d take as a stool softener the night
before about treatment? I have been taking milk of magnesium pills,
three at 5 PM, three at 8 PM and a 30 mL of liquid at that time. I am
looking for another solution as this has created kidney stones as the
pills have a high percentage of calcium.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out.

About the best treatment is exercise/movement that keeps the joints and muscles
from becoming stiff. The hard part is finding someone to do this everyday. It
has to begin before the stiffness sets in. It's very hard to reverse the

In the long-term, you might consider e-stim. If your biceps are contracted,
that means that your triceps are extending and lengthening. You can
electrically stimulate your triceps, and other muscles, to help them contract

you increase that control.

If you Google estim, unfortunately, you will find a number of sexually related

RE: [QUAD-L] Question about headset for Dragon NaturallySpeaking and listening to videos

2017-05-08 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I have had pretty good luck using Google home and Chromecast (plugged into
an HDMI port of a TV). I can access video playlists. I would like to find a
way to set up my own playlists using my PC and access them via voice. I've
also used this technology to connect Netflix. The search function using
Google home is not as powerful or precise as www.google.com

One big advantage of watching videos using Google Home and Chromecast is
that you can use your voice to pause and rewind videos. after it is set up
(which requires a smart phone or tablet) you don't need a PC or microphone
or headset. You need a Google account, WiFI access, Google Chromecast ($25),
Google Home ($114), access to a TV or monitor with an HDMI port, and someone
to configure it using a tablet or smartphone. One advantage is, since the
video is not running on the computer, it doesn't seem to interfere us much
with running Dragon NaturallySpeaking at the same time.

I had been using an external "shotgun" microphone on a microphone stand,
attached to a very large and heavy duty rolling cart I use as a rolling
computer table for my all in one computer. I was using the computers
speakers, and that worked okay. I did not need to wear a headset, and I was
not connected by any wires to the computer mouse up in the chair, but it was
difficult to watch YouTube videos because the sound from the computer
speakers was picked up by my microphone.

recently my microphone stand broke, and so I have begun using the internal
microphone on my computer. After some retraining with Dragon
NaturallySpeaking, it works pretty well for applications without audio. If I
want to watch YouTube videos on the computer, or go to websites with audio,
or make phone calls using Skype, I can ask someone to plug in and put on an
audio headset. if I am surfing the web, I will often plug in the headset
even though I am not wearing it, so that Dragon does not get confused if I
end up in a website with audio text.

I'm at home, and not a nursing home, and I have my own private TV. If I were
in a nursing home, I would probably buy another microphone stand and attach
it to my rolling table, since this is much easier for aides to understand
and position. The microphone worked best when it was positioned about 1 inch
away from my mouth. You will need a heavy-duty table, a microphone stand, a
set of wired headsets, and a shotgun microphone.

My biggest headache with these various options is voicemail. It is very easy
to use Skype to make phone calls, but I find it very difficult to navigate
voicemail. I think the solution is to set up a Dragon macro which will
initiate a call and then bring up the Skype keypad to navigate voicemail by
voice.

Good luck, and take care,

Subject: [QUAD-L] Question about headset for Dragon NaturallySpeaking and
listening to videos

My headset and microphone I use for Dragon NaturallySpeaking is giving me
difficulties because a nurse moved it earlier today and I told her not to
(98% of the people in nursing homes are mentally demented, and I am treated
like one of them sometimes) because it is so difficult to get it put back
on to my ears in a position where I can hear the sound. It is now 6 hours
later and I've had 3 people try to adjust them without hitting the sweet
spot. It is a game of chance just to hit the right spot and I'm tired of
playing it. It is especially aggravating to me because I study something
using YouTube videos and obviously I cannot hear them without my headset
being positioned properly. It would be all right if I could use my arms to
position them myself and not be dependent on other people to help me; as it
is, I am in a nursing home in Florida and they are chronically understaffed
and caring for a quadriplegic is really overextending what they have time to
do. I had no difficulties when I just had paralyzed legs but when my arms
became paralyzed and I needed someone to do everything I was doing with my
hands, private nursing care is really required, and unless one of my
children marries a billionaire I don't suppose I'll be receiving private
care in this lifetime, unless I could move to another state. Florida is the
worst place to get crippled in because they spend the least money on
handicap people.

Anyway back to the problem at hand. I am using a

Sennheiser PC 8 USB - Stereo USB Headset for PC and MAC with In-line Volume
and Mute Control

headset currently and it is lightweight and doesn't cause any pain when I
must wear it 24 7 which my original headset did, And actually put blisters
on my ears. The problem is I have it positioned exactly, or I cannot hear
with it. I was wondering if anyone else is using something that they can
hear with whenever it is put back on their head without a lot of adjusting
and moving around. Please tell me if you

Re: [QUAD-L] Question for everyone! Update on Nancy

2016-05-06 Thread Lori Michaelson
Hey Ron - they refuse to give me a round of antibiotics until another urine
specimen is done. People are just not doing their job and/or getting the
runaround. When you become a seasoned quad for 36 1/2 years... you get to
know things as you yourself know.

I would go to my "new" primary care physician or call her but she does not
know me very well at all since I just saw her once, she is 45 minutes away
and I told her what I did see her that the only problems I have are
secondary SCI issues and that is what I contact my urologist so I can see
her/hear her doing just that. Now, of course, it is a weekend. And I never
foresaw any of this coming.

2016-05-06 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
Its really troubling that a doctor cant properly organize getting a urine
specimen back in a timely manner. I would feel like they were giving me the run
around or not taking me seriously. Think about it...if a young mother
brought her little daughter in to get a specimen checkeddo you think
they would run her around? I would just go in and ask the doc to give me around
of antibiotics then you could doctor yourself when need me.

My mom is actually allergic to some metals. She has to wear earrings

get red and inflamed.

Hello Larry,

Burning mouth syndrome is also caused by using Ditropan. I find that if I
take my Ditropan three times a day, 10 mg at a time my mouth will do the
same. I have spaced out the time that I take Ditropan to every four hours but
only take 5 mg tablets.

Something that works for me is Xlimelts, which helps produce saliva and
keeps the mouth moist.

Another thing that I do is keep a small Dixie cup of peanut butter by the
bed and put a small bit in my mouth. The oil in the peanut butter helps
things.

When it happens it hurts, good luck.

2015-06-08 Thread diannal767

we were considering a cruise to mexico, via miami. we looked at the rooms on a
norwegian cruise line with a balcony and i saw nowhere that there was room to
fit a wheelchair through. a regular room offered much less of course. it looked
like once transferred. turn around, sit in one spot for grooming. we didn't
check any further on accessible rooms when we found a round trip airline fare
was $600.00 ea (bulk-head, coach) from cleveland to miami. round trip so we
wouldn't have to worry about the chair on connecting flights. plus extra
transfers as my husband is getting older and i no lighter in weight. i used an
aisle chair to the bahamas 20 yrs ago. they insisted they had to maneuver me.
they lost me going down the stairs.
dianna c6/7 not going.

Cruise ships especially the new ones, are wonderful in handicap accommodations.
Handicapped rooms are half again the size of a regular room allowing for room
to maneuver the wheelchair. Get a room with a balcony. The newer ships allow
you access to a balcony so you can actually look at the flying Fish. Elevators
are large enough for a power chair to enter and turn around to exit.

A caveat: I have had nightmarish experiences with airlines. Breaking chairs,
leaving chairs at places of embarkation (I once flew from Vancouver to Newark,
first-class bulkhead seats). My wife exited the plane and was told that my
Permobil did not make the flight! There I sat on the empty plane in a
first-class seat while the cleaning crew was preparing the flight to England.
On second thought, I should have just stayed on the plane. It worked out and I
got my $13K back from Continental for my family group’s round-trip airfare by
writing they had ruined my Alaskan vacation. Boo-hoo boo-hoo.
You have time. Detailed planning and understanding what to do on each leg of
the itinerary should allay your fears and help you to enjoy the trip of a
lifetime.
 Bon voyage

Show them how to lower the backrest and take your cushion, headrest,
joystick and footrest and put them in overhead storage. Tell them not to
put the chair on it's side, the batteries may move and create issues you
don't want or need. Also be at the boarding gate 45 minutes before
boarding time, you well be first on and last off. Enjoy the flight, look
out the windows when you can.

 Larry,

I am my C5 25 years post, and I been on cruises many times. I would like
to think that the airlines have gotten better in caring for power chairs
and their passengers. Sadly, it is an adventure in and of itself.

Cruise ships especially the new ones, are wonderful in handicap
accommodations. Handicapped rooms are half again the size of a regular room
allowing for room to maneuver the wheelchair. Get a room with a balcony.
The newer ships allow you access to a balcony so you can actually look at
the flying Fish. Elevators are large enough for a power chair to enter and
 turn around to exit.

I recommend you Google to find instructions on how to get the most out of
flying. Do not read posts older than two years because I don’t think
 they’ll be relevant.

A caveat: I have had nightmarish experiences with airlines. Breaking
chairs, leaving chairs at places of embarkation (I once flew from Vancouver
to Newark, first-class bulkhead seats). My wife exited the plane and was
told that my Permobil did not make the flight! There I sat on the empty
plane in a first-class seat while the cleaning crew was preparing the
flight to England. On second thought, I should have just stayed on the
plane. It worked out and I got my $13K back from Continental for my family
group’s round-trip airfare by writing they had ruined my Alaskan vacation.
 Boo-hoo boo-hoo.

You have time. Detailed planning and understanding what to do on each leg
of the itinerary should allay your fears and help you to enjoy the trip of
 a lifetime.

 Bon voyage

Re: [QUAD-L] Question

2014-10-29 Thread Billy Yahoo
Guys,

I'm retired (65) this year. Since I left work in 2000 on disability at 70% tax
free pay. My Insurance was paid with after tax dollars which made the payments
to me tax free. So, if my pay was $100,000 I receive $70,000 tax free, for
example.

You can take any 401k money without penalty as long as you file as disabled.
You will still be subjected to regular tax on the money as income. Your Soc.
Sec. Also is taxed as income if it falls beyond the threshold for the tax year.
You are disabled automatically if you are receiving SSD. You can save into a
401K anytime. By gov't do you mean state? Do they want money back from you from
an award or settlement from a lawsuit? That they can and will do.

I received a settlement from a suit brought against property owners of the pier
I got hurt on. At that time I worked for Chase Manhattan bank. It took five
years to bring the suit to fruition. I used $250k in medical expenses from
insurance. The bank was self insured for their employees ergo it was my
employer who wanted the $250k back. I argued that they were not part of the
suit, had no steak in arguing the suit nor any downside if I had lost in court.
Nope, by law they were entitled to that money back. Now, through arduous debate
back and forth ( they knocked it down to $100k)

Adults Disabled Before Age 22

An adult disabled before age 22 may be eligible for child's benefits if a
parent is deceased or starts receiving retirement or disability benefits.
We consider this a child's benefit because it is paid on a parent's
Social Security earnings record.

The adult child—including an adopted child, or, in some cases, a
stepchild, grandchild, or step grandchild—must be unmarried, age 18 or
older, and have a disability that started before age 22.

You’re absolutely right Greg

I had to wait several years after I broke my neck to qualify for Medicare. I
did not have enough work quarters to qualify (I was only short two) and had to
wait until I was 65. Best birthday ever! It took me five more years to pay off
all of the doctors Et cetera for my medical treatment during those years. Have
a great day everyone.

Not always, unless the new rules changed it.

I was 16, and when I tried to get Medicare they said I did not have enough work
credits to qualify.

But, because I was under 18 (maybe 21), when my father passed away, I qualified
under his Medicare.

If both parents pass away, be sure to check which parent gets more Medicare.
You can switch.

And if your on Medicare, look into a Medicare Replacement program. I switched
to Secure Horizons AARP, name changed to United Healthcare AARP. (AARP has
nothing to do with your age.) Every state has different options, But they cover
quite a bit more stuff.

You qualify for Medicare no matter your age if you are disabled.

At first I thought stones, but then I read the last line. This happened to
me about eight or nine years ago and to the best of my memory, which isn't
what it used to be, it didn't really get under control until I developed a
UTI and required some antibiotics.

If you have good irrigation kits and some Toomes (I don't know how to spell
that, but it's basically a 50 or 60 mm syringe) I would recommend doing
some irrigation that way. You're able to clear out more with the syringe
than with a normal irrigation kit.

I have also found that if you can drink too large lemonades in an
afternoon, you will put out an enormous amount of junk that was in your
bladder. Unfortunately it can clog if you're not using irrigation all the
junk out proactively.

Good luck, I wish I could help more.

I have cipro on hand and have considered taking it to see if it helps. 5
teaspoons of vinegar to 1 pint of water and I irrigate once a day...30ml and
clamp cath off for 10 minutes (longer if possible) and then let it drain

At first I thought stones, but then I read the last line. This happened to
me about eight or nine years ago and to the best of my memory, which isn't
what it used to be, it didn't really get under control until I developed a
UTI and required some antibiotics.

If you have good irrigation kits and some Toomes (I don't know how to spell
that, but it's basically a 50 or 60 mm syringe) I would recommend doing some
irrigation that way. You're able to clear out more with the syringe than
with a normal irrigation kit.

I have also found that if you can drink too large lemonades in an afternoon,
you will put out an enormous amount of junk that was in your bladder.
Unfortunately it can clog if you're not using irrigation all the junk out
proactively.

Good luck, I wish I could help more.

What the heck? I would VERY SERIOUSLY question this urologist and
ask what he/she means by too acidic as in What does 'too acidic' mean.
What problems can/would it cause? Curious what problems 'too acidic' could
cause. I've never heard this from a urologist before,and I would seek a 2nd

Nickie, for your friend I would recommend that you or they contact the
local Center For Independent Living (CIL). The centers are Federally Funded
and the info is free for the asking.

Regarding you. Today there is a simple procedure that is performed in
doctor's office that eliminates roids. For most its a 15-30 procedure. Ask

I've noticed I lean to the left myself, especially in pictures. You can have
lateral supports installed on your chair that will help for support.

Hey guys. For the last year I have noticed that I am leaning to the left. In
the past month it has got worse. Now I have to physically hold myself
upright or I go tumbling leftward. As you might expect, it is really
affecting my ability to drive, or to do anything for that matter. Anyone
have an idea what the cause might be? I sleep on my left side as well.

Wow, I thought it was just me.  I pull left also, always have!  It wears-out my
left elbow in anything long-sleeved, as well as my left-armrest, and even the
left thigh on my pants (from pushing/holding myself upright all the time).  In
bed, it's hard to sit-up straight without pillows to hold me up, or side-rail
to
push-off of (or trapeze to grab to adjust my torso.

In my chair(s) I have a Jay Jay2 Deep-Contour Back, which helps A LOT to stay
upright while sitting.  See http://bit.ly/REoIQC

Still, it's tricky trying to lean forward with something in my hands sometimes:
I'll veer off to the side and have to upright myself, and try again.  Mostly I
counter the tendency by leaning way right, before and as I lean forward.

I have my crooked days when I am unable to be straight. I tend to lean to the
left. My doctor said it is caused by pain, pinched nerve, or muscle weakness.
He thinks that I wear myself out. I have to sit on a heating pad because the
spot is low on my back. I take Advil to help with pain and inflamation and that
seems to help me.

Your situation sounds much more severe than what I have to deal with, so it may
be something totally different.

I've been leaning to the left for about 10 years. Got an X-Ray of my spine and

and they said . What are you doing here? I told them about my leaning and had
my X-Ray in hand and said … I just don't want my scoliosis to get worse and
thought a brace might help to prevent it from getting worse. They, the
professionals, told me … you'll be fine,, no need for a brace … not for a

Lateral supports would be your best bet. I had been leaning to the right
for the last 16 years, but I make sure I have the lateral support properly
positioned so that it set up really straight.

It's also important to make sure your hips are properly aligned.
I know this sounds like 101, but it is pretty important.

For a limited few,(and I mean few) it can be done. But consider all the
bacteria in that area plus and friction causing internal abrasion and further
