Hi,
How did you get the Linux version of the Bridge ... Seems not to be yet
available ... Beta tester ?

Hi,

I had the same problem.

https://github.com/marmarek/qubes-core-admin/commit/5230bb61ab5b04bdf0b37d8ed06064773e229995

Above link says that "ignore it for now" so i commented out that line in file
/usr/lib/python3.5/site-packages/qubes/storage/__init__.py (line no 238). Then
everything worked fine.

You will need to restart qubesd.(i.e systemctl restart qubesd)

Thanks for all the info! I bought my battery from some random seller on eBay
and it was disappointing initially but seems better after a few cycles. I may
check out your recommended ones anyway. I did many of the other recommended
upgrades already, including replacing the thermal paste, the WiFi adapter and
upgrading to 16gb of Patriot Viper RAM and an SSD.

I'm very happy with my current setup thanks to you and others. One question I
have is regarding boot time for 4.0. Is it several minutes long for you on
coreboot/Qubes 4.0? I also get a Failed to Load Kernel Modules message early
on in Qubes boot if that matters. Once it's up and running, things run
smoothly.

[qubes-users] Qubes OS 4.0 Fantastic!

2018-04-19 Thread Randall Jonasz
Hello,

I just want to give some feedback about my experience with Qubes OS. The last
time I had Qubes OS installed was with version 3.1. The Asus laptop I used
needed a lot of manual configuration to finally getting a workable
installation. Last week, after noticing that 4.0 had been released, I installed
4.0 on the very same laptop 3.1 was on. It installed without any problems
using the default parameters. I've been using this laptop as my main computer
now for a week and it has performed very well. The only hiccup was with Win7.
Every time I update Windows, the screen freezes but I still see disk activity
so I let it run for an hour before manually shutting down the domain. Other
than that my work needs and pleasure uses have been met very well. I even set
up Expressvpn in sys-net and it works flawlessly.

Thank you to the developers for outstanding progress!

Randall

Exactly, but I still want less software so I have better software on there as I
would build my own software to take over most of the functions.
I'm also replacing most of the python scripts too, because they are so
cumbersome it's not funny.

It isn't crashing literally every 5 seconds, it's an exaggeration. Well, for
most of my PCs, I did have one that crashed when starting EVERY TIME.

Yeah, SystemD is just insecure and super vulnerable. When SystemD crashes, the
whole PC freezes. That's why init and sysv was so much better, because they
started everything properly and separately. They did it the right way.

Well, we can only hope that people realise and thus start moving back away from
SystemD in the near future.

I just figured there may be someone that built Qubes using the minimal
templates, and not the large templates, or similar. Without all the bloatware
that Qubes has in the systems.

ya hope they fix that issue soon. What I do is keep hitting the green refresh
icon on top to refresh the manager to see the current vm states. For some
reason it doesn't refresh on its own. Weird that custom appvms you create
don't appear in the manager.

Have you made alot of customizations in dom0?

[qubes-users] Re: ANN: Testing new VPN code for Qubes

2018-04-19 Thread john
I installed this in a App/proxy 4.0 VM, as I am familiar with the 3.2
CLI VPN creation.

I don't really understand how installing it in a Template or The
Template(not cloning it 1st) would allow me to swich between
geolocations ...

So, I used the AppVM, then I simply cloned the 1st one created with
the script and went into the PIA config file area and did rm -f ln
-s to the network manager thing.

and then recreated the ln -s to a new config file, which works , and
Even wakes up from suspend (where in 3.2 it never did) ; However,

If the AppVM using one of the VPN-foo as a netvm, and it is started,
and I want to switch to another VPN-foo1 it doesn't work on the fly, I
have to go and qvm-shutdown the AppVM and open it again, which is a
big pain.I am often running out of RAM, and so try to just use one
App-proxy-vpnVM , however ,

is this the expected behavior no switching vpn appvms on the fly ?

Thank you Teqleez.
Your idea looks like change something. I tried many times with different ways.
The problem is in video install driver. They need to reduce the install size
but now it lacks support for some graphics boards. I am using a RC3 install
version and it has all drivers on it.
With the RC3 update I did today, now everything is working fine, since I do not
need a fresh install anymore :-)

[qubes-users] Re: HCL - Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th gen - Qubes 4.0

2018-04-19 Thread beastgoalie
I tried that, and confirmed that I changed the setting by watching this value
toggle from 1 to 0 and back on multiple reboots:
cat /sys/class/drm/card0/power/rc6_enable

Since I'm on EFI, I manually edited the /boot/efi/EFI/qubes/xen.cfg file and
didn't run grub2-mkconfig and it still turned rc6 off and on with that
parameter you mentioned.

It didn't help my suspend issues. It suspends, and the power button blinks
slowly, then no matter what I do (clicking power, typing, clicking the mouse,
plugging and unplugging cables) nothing changes that steady blink of the power
button until I hold it for ~10seconds.

There's another value in the KERNEL parameter, i915.aplha_support=1. I changed
it to 0 as well (which disables it). This also had no effect.

I need to learn how to troubleshoot this better. I'm at a loss right now.

[qubes-users] "How can I properly manage my system?" or "how do I use Admin API, salt and git or other versioning/distribution mechanisms together"

2018-04-19 Thread viq
Salt tools give a nice way to configure system (make sure templates exist
with certain packages, prepare AppVMs based on them, etc). But I'd prefer
to edit them in a customized editor, with syntax highlighting, etc, which
is strongly discouraged from being put into dom0. I also feel that having
version control over those files is the way to go, preferably synced
somewhere so I can for example easily replicate this when setting up
another computer or reinstalling.

My understanding is that this is a perfect use case for new Admin API -
have a machine with editor and git set up to adjust salt files, and either
give admin permissions to that one, or use something like split-git that
was mentioned to pull the repo into another VM and execute there.

Am I on the right track here? If so:
1) What packages do I need on admin VM to be able to do this?
2) Where and how should I be executing this? A quick test of running
qubesctl inside a VM didn't even produce logs in dom0 journal, the command
just complained it can't reach a daemon.
3) What would be a good way to track and distribute necessary changes to
/etc/qubes-rpc/policy/ on dom0?

And if I'm not on the right track, then what would be the proper way to
approach this?

maybe you'll have better luck with simple-mtpfs

from the package's info:

SIMPLE-MTPFS (Simple Media Transfer Protocol FileSystem) is a file
system for Linux (and other operating systems with a FUSE
implementation, such as Mac OS X or FreeBSD) capable of operating on
files on MTP devices attached via USB to local machine. On the local
computer where the SIMPLE-MTPFS is mounted, the implementation makes use
of the FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) kernel module. The practical
effect of this is that the end user can seamlessly interact with MTP
device files.

[qubes-users] New installation of Qubes OS stopped booting for no reason?

2018-04-19 Thread billollib
So, I had installed Qubes 4 on a triple boot laptop (Win 10, Netrunner linux,
Qubes OS). It had installed fine, and I had booted up in Qubes three or four
times, played with the VMS, ran firefox, poked around a little, and was happy.
Then I got busy with some other stuff and set it aside, and worked mostly in
Netrunner for my "real" work.

Today, I come back to it, and Qubes won't boot. I get the following errors on
the boot screen:

Failed to load kernal modules

Kfd: kgd2kfd_probe failed

Reached target basic system

 dracut - initqueue[334]: Warning: dracut-initque time out -
starting timeout script

Could not boot
/dev/mapper/qubes_dom0_root does not exist
/dev/qubes_dome0/root does not exist

and I'm dumped into the rescue prompt.

This has repeated three times. I tried taking out my usb mouse (which has
caused problems in the past, though not this), but that didn't change anything.

Is this some configuration thing, or did aliens from outer space corrupt my
partition with their evil laptop killer ray and I need to reinstall -- I don't
mind, since I'm just playing around with Qubes, but I'd rather fix it...

Thanks!

billo

I couldn't get the right screen resolution for me as the default was too small
and all the other options present simply don't fit the screen of the T470p. I
fixed it by using xrandr directly.

First in dom0 terminal create a cvt with your resolution requirements like this:

cvt 1920 1080 60

copy the modeline and then do:

xrandr --newmode

for example in my case:

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120
-hsync +vsync

then execute:
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 1920X1080_60.00

Execute the resolution change:
xrandr -s 1920X1080

You can write the following script and set it to autostart with Qubes:

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 1920X1080_60.00
xrandr -s 1920X1080

This way your resolution changes as soon as you login to Qubes.

With regards to suspend issues. I also have them. Sometimes the laptop will not
suspend when closing the lid and it is necessary to manually suspend it.
Sometimes the laptop has trouble coming back out of sleep (although less
frequently than the first issue). Sometimes after returning from sleep there
are issues with USB devices

I'm a newbie, but when I tried to use Rufus in Windows to create a boot USB I
had all kinds of problems with it. What I finally did was used another computer
with Fedora on it and ran the dd command in Linux which created a good boot
setup drive: dd if=Qubes-R3-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M && sync (choose "sdX"
as your actual USB location, such as /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc, your mileage may
vary... :-)) (and of course choose the correct ISO name)

That part about locking a boot entry sounds right. Apologies, don't know
much about rpm. If it's a Xen issue, you shouldn't have to mess with grub.

"mtp://" is the clue :) mtp is a protocol for communication between a
phone and a computer. I don't think rsync supports mtp.

(My old phone used to 'mount' OK when I connected it, but my new phone
doesn't - it shows up as an mtp: device.)

Xen might not support what you're trying to do. Can you replace the
primary graphics card with one with more ports that can drive the

of monitors you want?

doh, I hope it can. When you say might not support, are you referring to
4 monitors or 4 monitors spread out across 2 gfx ... devices? (not sure
what it would be called since one is integrated and the other a card
that was plugged in). Ah, a bit detail I left out of the post, the gfx
card model! Its a OEM AMD Radeon HD 6570 1GB DDR3 PCIe x16 DP DVI Video
Card pulled out of an HP machine.
As for replacing, most of the cards that seemed like they would be
compatible (AMD Radeon) cost a mint as soon as they went above the "3
ports" threshhold, so I would *really* like to try to get my current
setup (or the one I am aspiring to) to work before considering shelling
out more money.

Well the integrated gfx is what is primary now, I tried setting it to
switchable (whatever that is) and it didn't work, then to the grfx card
and that didnt work then to the primary and they all... kinda worked, at
least everything was getting a signal of some sort as opposed to
consistently getting 2 out of four monitors blank.

Lastly, so far, when I try to start up

though that happens with all the appvms and the debian templates and
for

redhat and whonix I get: qubes manager error starting vm 'fedora-26'

Go into Qube Settings on sys-net, Devices tab. Unmap anything listed
there
and add your NIC back in. You might have to repeat this if you remove
the

secondary graphics card.

Alright, thanks. I will give it a try when I get back from my trip.

[qubes-users] Qubes 4 on USB Drive Windows Install Problems

2018-04-19 Thread Campbell
Newbie to Qubes, trying it on 64GB USB drive. Installs fine, boots fine. Qubes
4 runs nice on the external USB drive.
I've read documentation for days now, and have searched on this mail group.

I am trying to set up a Windows VM and following the instructions in the
Documentation, having some problems.

1) qvm-create win7 --hvm --label green returns unknown argument "--hvm"

Ran this and created the new Win appvm:
qvm-create win7 --class StandaloneVM --property virt_mode=hvm --property
kernel="" --property memory=4096 --property maxmem=4096 --property debug=True
--label green
qvm-features win7 video-model cirrus

Win appvm shows up in the Qubes Manager

2) Using GUI cannot start the new windows appvm since it has no boot device,
and cannot associate the disc drive if the vm isn't started
Question: Does Qubes on a USB drive have same features as install to HDD? Is
Qubes on USB fully supported? I seem to recall a Template in 3.2 configured for
Windows, but maybe I am remembering it wrong. I installed 3.2 a while back on
an old laptop but it did not have enough RAM to run Qubes very well and I
abandoned it at that time.

I need to figure out how to dd my Windows CD to an ISO but I figure I can look
that one up.
Any help is appreciated. I don't know if Qubes installed on the USB has all the
features as full install on HDD.

Looks I've to protect a kernel package from removal on next upgrade & lock
one boot entry for it in grub menu . Is there a way to mark an rpm
permanent? And since on updates grub menu is overwritten I've to reinstall
grub manually on each upgrade, right?

oh yes apologies. I made a copy of default whonix-gw and whonix-ws, then
upgraded as per https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Upgrading_Whonix_13_to_Whonix_14

so you say whonix-14 is available in the unstable repo? I will try this.

when changing anon-whonix to use netvm and template for whonix-14, tor browser
works.

when creating a new dvm, tor browser claims not installed.

I wanted to install whonix-14 from a premade template but did not know how.
only instructions for upgrading from 13 to 14 on whonix.org

Do you mean the VM manager? If so, yes! It does work with a lot of bugs like a
lot of people reported already. I don't see all apps in the VM manager and the
lights indicating a working app do only appear or disappear when clicking an
app. Sometimes I forget an app is still running.
VPN apps I created don't appear in the VM manager at all, so I do need to use
CLI.

Having a working devices tray icon would be nice, though.

ya but the thing about Qubes is the software is considered insecure in the
first place. and if your system is crashing every 5 seconds thats super
suspicious. and beauty about Qubes is being able to quickly wipe and reinstall
a vm or template. the more super custom you go the more tedious that becomes.

as far as no systemD well thats gonna be super tough. It seems you do alot of
tough work setting up your Qubes but it seems qubes is designed to be default
and universal in mind. but its funny seeing other fsf guys on the forums who
don't want secure boot but not mentioning how much worse all software is. I
mean I don't know what your reasons are for not trusting systemD, but the same
fingers are in all the gui's prolly too.

Hello,

I am experiencing the same problem with the final version of 4.0 but I did not
change a setting of qrexec_timeout. The device tray icon disappeared suddenly.

I am getting tons of "GTK error" when trying to run manually via "python3
-mqui.tray.devices"?

So far I haven't been able to get the devices tray appear again but I can
attach devices via command line.

Anyone having the same problem?

ya don't hvm is not needed less secure. or if making a standalone hvm no
reason to use template. Unless using a special os I also believe there
already is a one called debian-minimal or something like that somewhere in
community repos.

I think its only maximum space. only used when needed. it is already really
using only a little more then 4.5 gb each default template vm, i think. you

Have you tried installing the bridge in a templateVM like debian9?
I have installed the bridge in both Qubes 3.2 and Qubes 4 in the template
debian 9.
Then I created an app based on debian 9 called protonmail where I started the
bridge and put all my credentials in and connected it to Thunderbird like
described in their instructions.

Worked well for me ever since. Updates have to be installed in the templateVM
as well. It shouldn't be anything different from other programmes or scripts
like tasket's VPN which should als be installed in a templateVM.I haven't tried
fedora but I guess it would work.

Xen might not support what you're trying to do. Can you replace the
primary graphics card with one with more ports that can drive the amount
of monitors you want?

Go into Qube Settings on sys-net, Devices tab. Unmap anything listed there
and add your NIC back in. You might have to repeat this if you remove the
secondary graphics card.

[qubes-users] ProtonMail bridge

2018-04-19 Thread chipperh61
Hello,
I've installed the (beta) protonmail bridge for Linux in my personal VM
for use with Thunderbird. It actually worked for a while, but recently, it no
longer would start up. I cannot even manually install and start the bridge.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I had not done any other installs or changes that could be associated with the
bridge not starting.
Part of my troubleshootin included going to the seperate directories and
removing the installed items from the original install, and removing the
directories that were created during the install, and then re-attempting a
fresh install - No Joy.

Any help/recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Chip

Are you trying to build your own Whonix WS 14 template based on debian-9?
You might want to begin by installing the one in unstable first and
working from there.

Qubes does some additional steps to support Whonix 13- see the salt
command on https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/whonix/install/#install-templates.
If you're trying to make a DVM off the Whonix 14 ws template, per
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3595, I think you also need
something like (not tested!) "qvm-features whonix-ws-14 whonix-ws 1".

It may have been a Linux kernel update. If you can choose an earlier
version from your boot menu, try that. To confirm, you can see the
installation history in /var/log/dnf.log* files. To downgrade specific
packages, see
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/software-update-dom0/#how-to-downgrade-a-specific-package.
If booting the earlier version works for you, you might want to use that
instead of trying to downgrade packages but look for a way to keep more
than just 2 versions in your default list or could accidentally lose the
working one on your next upgrade. I think I saw a way to do that somewhere
on this list.

Can you boot and install in legacy mode? Might want to try that first. If
not, and assuming you are using UEFI, see here how to edit the
configuration options for the installer:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/uefi-troubleshooting/#change-installer-kernel-parameters-in-uefi

If you want to try to disable your secondary graphics, add
xen-pciback.hide=(02:00.0) to boot options. 02:00.0 is an example, check
first by booting with a Debian CD or something and do a "sudo lspci" to
find the actual BDF.
