[qubes-users] Recover broken bootloader
My laptop has started to fail to boot my 4.0rc2 installation. This started after doing a qubes-dom0-update, but I'm pretty sure that I had rebooted the machine successfully at least once since then. The computer has now gone into a bootloop, and fails to display the GRUB screen. I can only assume that the bootloader is crashing. However, nothing is displayed on the screen. Is there a recommended procedure to reinstall GRUB when booting from the installation media? [qubes-users] Qubes-4.0rc2 restore backup error
Before installing 4.0rc2, I did a backup of my VM's from 3.2. I've started restoring them one-by-one and for the most part is has been a reasonably painless operation. However, when I tried to restore the "ssh" VM, I got the following error: qubesadmin.backup: -> Restoring ssh... qubesadmin.backup: Extracting data: 105.4 MiB to restore qubesadmin.backup: Error extracting data: retrieved backup size exceed expected size, if you believe this is ok, use --ignore-size-limit option qubesadmin.backup: Continuing anyway to restore at least some VMs qubesadmin.backup: -> Done. Please install updates for all the restored templates After this, I have an "ssh" VM, but it's empty. Or rather, it contains the default content as if I had manually created a new VM based on some template. I then deleted the "ssh" VM and restored using the --ignore-size-limit flag. The output was different, but the end result was the same: qubesadmin.backup: -> Restoring ssh... qubesadmin.backup: Extracting data: 0 to restore qubesadmin.backup: -> Done. Please install updates for all the restored templates Again, the "ssh" VM was created, but it just contained the default content just as in the first case. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Qubes-4rc2 timezone (or clocksync service) problems
I just installed rc2 and trying to configure the machine similar to the way things worked in my old (3.2) installation. One of the issues I have faced is that the timesync service doesn't seem to do the right thing. I am in Singapore timezone (UTC+8). Typing "date" in dom0 shows that the correct timezone is configured, but the time is 8 hours in the future: [dom0]$ date Thu Oct 26 20:09:23 +08 2017 The actual time when I typed the command was 12:09. Running "date" in sys-net (which is the VM that runs the clocksync service) gives me the same output as in dom0. Is this a problem with clocksync? Where should I start looking in order to figure out the cause of this problem? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Windows 7 VM on Qubes $
After installing Qubes 4rc1 on a new laptop, I took a backup of my Windows 7 VM from my old 3.2 installation and loaded it onto the new laptop. This did not work at all. After some searching I came across a statement suggesting that Windows not work is a known issue and will be fixed with the final release of Qubes 4. My question is: Will the Windows 7 support work once rc2 comes out? I don't use the Windows support much, but when I do, it's really important. At the same time I can't stay with Qubes 3.2 since my new laptop is using Kaby Lake, and thus requires Qubes 4. [qubes-users] How can I test that my AEM configuration is correct?
I enabled AEM some time ago, and so far it's worked the way I'd expect it to. Based on what I have read here, I came to the understanding that after upgrading the dom0 kernel I'd get an AEM error when I reboot the machine, since the kernel is different from the last boot. Yesterday, I installed a new dom0 update which included an updated kernel package. I was expecting to see an AEM error when I rebooted, but that never happened. This suggests to me that my AEM configuration is incorrect. Is there a way I can test whether it works or not? Perhaps my manipulating something in the boot process that would trigger an AEM failure? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Assuming your computer is the Lenovo X220, you probably only have 4 GB of memory in this machine, as this was the amount the machine was sold with back when it came out. Unfortunately, 4 GB will not get you very far with Qubes. You can do wotk with 8, but you really need 16. > Could somebody give my some step-by-step instructions on how to solve my > problem? I've googled a bit, and it seems as though the X220 supports up to 16 GB, so the solution for you is to buy a memory upgrade. As a result, xentop seems to overestimate actual CPU usage. I've restarted the offending VM's now, so I can't test anymore. The fan was blowing at maximum speed (which is why I looked into this in the first place) so there was definitely something happening. The VM that was running with the most CPU usage according to xentop (150% or so) had been used to run an Atari ST emulator (which uses lots of CPU). However, the emulator had been killed and the machine left idle while I was off doing other things for at least 30 minutes. It was when I came back to the computer that I noticed that the fan was blowing and that's when I noticed the problem. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Xen high CPU usage, but nothing is running in the VM
I noticed that my laptop fan was blowing more than usual, so I started ‘xentop’ in dom0 to see which VM was using CPU. I noticed two VM's were using 150% and abour 70% respectively (according to ‘xentop’ output). However, when running ‘top’ in the VM's themselves, I saw nothing using any CPU. That is what I would expect, as they were not running anything CPU-intensive at the time. [qubes-users] Custom shared directory between VM's
I regularly compile the latest version of Emacs for use in my development VM. I simply compile Emacs from the git repository and install it in /usr/local. All works the way it's supposed to. However, I now have more than one VM where I need to use Emacs, and I would like to avoid having to compile it from source in both VM's. The only way I can think of to handle this situation is to create a separate templatevm for this, enabline networking in the template so that I can use git from it, and then compile Emacs there. Is there a better way to handle this? Ideally I'd like to be able to compile Emacs and install it to some specific directory that can then be made available to both VM's. I have no intention of connecting an external monitor, so the HDMI issue is not a problem for me. I am about to buy a new laptop, and jst about the only requirements I have is that it should be reasonably small, and that I am able to use the GPU in it. The latter is because I need to do some development which requires it. I am OK with installing Nvidia's proprietary drivers on dom0. If not, is there another alternate for me? I really want to be using Qubes on this machine, but if there is no way I can get a GPU to work, I'm going to have to use a dedicated machine for the GPU work, which means I have to get two laptops, and I'd rather not do that. However, the resulting installation does not have working networking (neither wired nor wireless). Doing "ip link" does not show any physical devices, so I suspect that this is a driver issue. I will build a new installer image in the hope that it will contain the appropriate drivers. Thank you for the honest reply, even if it's one that causes me some amount of trouble. The fact Qubes 3.2 can't be installed on modern hardware is problematic, so here's hoping that Qubes 4 will be out in a reasonable amount of time. Now for a question: In a recent post you asked people to try the beta repositories. In that email there was a link to instructions how to build the ISO image. If I were to do that, would that image contain the latest kernel and drivers? If so, that could possibly be a solution to the problem of installing 3.2 on a modern laptop. [qubes-users] New Qubes installer image?
Since Qubes cannot be easily installed if things like networking or graphics is not available during installation, is there any plan to create a new installer image that has newer drivers? On my old Dell Latitude E7470, I was unable to get WLAN working until I had performed a dom0 update. I was lucky to have access to a wired connection at the time, but if I had not, this would have been a difficult problem. The newest laptop I have is a Dell Latitude 7480, where pretty much nothing works using the drivers that are included in the installer (To be fair, this machine is new enough that I'm doubtful that even the latest dom0 update would have support for it. But that does not change the question). Are there any plans to create an updated installer image? [qubes-users] HCL - Dell Latitude 7480
I have not been able to install Qubes 3.2 on this machine. The installer cannot start as the graphics card is not supported. The result is that you get dropped into the text-based installer which does not work. This is kind of disappointing as this is a very light laptop that supports up to 32 GB RAM, which would be very nice to have with Qubes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] Dealing with ssh
What is the best way to handle ssh in Qubes? I have a set of machines I often log in to remotely, and I want to make sure the sessions (as well as the private keys) are protected from vulnerabilities in other applications. Currently I have set of a dedicates ssh qube from which I run all my ssh sessions. I've also set its firewall to only allow access to the machines I normally connect to. Is there a better way to handle this? Ideally, I'd like to be able to use dispvms for ssh, but how would I handle the private keys? How do other people do this? Thank you. I have read that, and I have already settled on getting a 32 GB laptop. My question, however, was whether it's expected that the upgrade procedure will be difficult to the point where doing a full reinstall is easier. In particular, I'd like to know if existing QVM's will be compatible with Qubes 4 (i.e. can I just back them up and load them into Qubes 4?). Of course, if Qubes 4 isn't going to be out until much later, then the entire question is moot anyway since I'll have no choice but to go for Qubes 3.2 anyway. Hello, I'm looking at getting a new laptop in the next few months. [qubes-users] Programmatically performing software update
I tend to use Qubes VM's not just for security purposes, but also as a very convenient way to have clean, manageable VM's where I only install the stuff I need for a specific task. This has led me to have a large number non-template VM's, all of which needs to be manually updated every time there is a software update. Right now, for each VM, I have to click on update, wait for the dialogue box to spin for a while waiting for the VM to start, then manually choose “yes” to update. This process gets old really fast. Is there a way to automate this so that I can simply say “yes, I want to update all these VM's, go ahead and do it”?
