Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] My mini review of the Squeezebox Radio

2009-11-08 Thread hellesangel

Back to reviewing the Radio - I love it. The first experience wasn't
good, it wouldn't connect to the network on the wired socket ready for
it but a bit of fiddling showed the socked wasn't properly wired. I
take back all the things I called Logitech and the Radio.

With a properly wired socket the installation was, and has subsequently
been, easy. The display works well, if the viewing angle is a touch
restricted sometimes, and the menus are pretty logical. After initial
cursing the text/number entry system using the scroll wheel is quite
effective.

Being rather critical for a moment the sound quality isn't Hifi at all;
the bass is boomy, there's absolutely no clear detail in the high
frequencies at all, just a fizzy mash of noise, but that said the total
sound is warm and enjoyable, there's no background noise, and it's
perfectly good if you're not expecting too much - my wife is currently
dancing round the bathroom to the Jackson 5! For speech radio it's
ideal, voices coming through full and clear. It produces a decent
volume and doesn't distort if turned up to max.

It cost €170 delivered to the door from amazon.de and as such is pretty
good value, we'll be ordering a second one any time now. Well done
Logitech.

A question please doe those of you using the radio as a bedside radio
and alarm - is there any audible hum from the unit?

I have a unit from a different manufacturer which we can't leave
powered up overnight as it hums and my wife can't sleep!! I'd like to
replace it.

My early access beta testing unit has the same hiss when my ear is less
than 20 cm from the speaker when the device is on. I haven't noticed it
earlier but I just checked and it's definitely there. It only happens
when the device is on which it usually isn't during the night. When the
device is turned off and just stands there with the off screen saver
it's completely silent.

I can't hear the hiss if my ear is 20 cm from the speaker when the
device is turned on. Also, mine is an early access unit so this might
have been fixed to the production units.

My early hardware beta running firmware 7.5.0 r7863 (and I should note
Erland I both have very early betas; the circuitry changed enough on
newer units that the plastic case shape had to change!) always hisses
slightly, whether on or off, about as loud as Erland notes. This
seems independent of the Line In gain setting. It is much, much better
than the hiss on a couple Tivoli Model One radios I tried. The Model
One, despite all the praise it's garnered over the years, has has a hiss
that's audible from 1-2 meters, and is noticeable even when Model One is
playing music!

I think this is likely to be fixed in software, at least hissing when
off (and maybe that's why Erland I see different behavior, maybe
he's running Radio firmware that fixes the off hissing); if Radio isn't
playing anything, including Line In, it should be easy for the firmware
to turn off the amp. IIRC, there was a similar enhancement to the
firmware for Boom after Boom was publicly released. I know of at least
on Radio performance enhancement that hasn't been rolled out yet
specifically because some folks like Erland I still have the older
hardware. It could well be that the best hiss fix needs newer hardware,
and therefore won't be rolled out for another month or two (?), when all
Radio early access testers have production level hardware.

Sorry, m ost of these bugs are like one week old.
Why do you think they don't get addressed?
Heck, if I have to change something on the App Store I need at least
three weeks for quality control alone, if you mail in your ordinary
alarm radio you probably don't get an answer before a month or so, how
about a _little_ patience?

pippin, I hear you, however, there is only a 30 day return period to
return products. What if they can't or won't fix bugs with presets,
alarms, etc? I'm not talking about enhancements but just core
functionality.

I really like the SB Radio and have given it a very favorable and
detailed review on Amazon.com, but I will return it if there is not at
least a time line given for the addressing of MAJOR issues that affect
core functionality.

Time has taught me that companies routinely release products with
faults which they then fail to address, leaving the buyer stuck.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] My mini review of the Squeezebox Radio

If a product (however cool etc) is sold as a direct replacement for the
bedside radio then the alarm simply has to work, and compared to all the
other clever things the Radio does a bit of code that says 'if current
time == wake up time then play music' sounds rather bovine to fix.

Some patience will be given but Logitech do concentrate on core
functionality and stability of the products before racing off to the new
wizardry. Remember that while cool features on marketing brochures may
make an initial sale a few upset customers ranting on forums like this
can undo a lot of hard work.

Keep up the good work, etc.

Two weeks. And sorry - for me a not working alarm is so critical that
I'd expect a fix (or at least a sign that someone is working on the
problem or at least treats it with the upmost importance) within days.

I failure rate of 20% for alarms (2 days out of 10) really annoys me

Okay, fair enough. I have only done very basic testing with alarms and
have not had an alarm fail yet. I am concerned though that my presets
seemed to spontaneously disappear when they only thing I did was turn on
the Trackstat plugin on the server.

Looking at it now I see that the server log file is over 1.4TB and
growing. All of the messages seem to be complaining about Trackstat
undefined symbols.

I will remove Trackstat and restart. If the presets spontaneously
disappear on their own again I will file a bug report.

P.S., I plugged iPeng on my Amazon review, good job, it's
indispensable!

Did you import old TrackStat ratings?
I recently re-setup my server and moved to 7.5.0 and when I let
TrackStat (2.10, I believe) import my old ratings it took down the
server for around 12h (it's a slow server), logged a LOT of stuff and
caused mysql load that was so heavy that I couldn't even connect a
player to the server.

I let it run overnight and now it looks like it calmed down and I'm
back to normal operation.

I remember Erland had some issues with some db change in 7.4 that
caused slow lookups and one proposed solution was to generate an
additional table with hash ids to speed things up and only cause the
slow operation once at startup.
I don't know whether Erland implemented that but this was _my_ suspect
for the cause, I'll see how it will work in the future...

I did try to import an XML library file from iTunes that had all of my
current track ratings. It had been running for about 24 hours on a very
fast HP EX495 that is set up with dual core 2.5ghz cpu.

I just had to uninstall it because it is causing way too much server
load and I don't understand what it found in the import that caused it
to start trashing everything.

I'm hoping this explains my loss of presets on the radio although it's
a bit hard to understand. I will just recreate the presets and see how
things work over the next couple of days.

It's the Logitech tables that's the problem, I'd prefer to not modify

complex if they want to handle a database that has been partly improved

I'm interested to see any logs you have.
The performance issue is if the file paths has changed, it takes few
seconds to try to find alternative paths to a single file. In a large
library a few seconds per file results in very bad performance.

The latest TrackStat version has a possibility to turn of this feature
so it only uses a file if it has the exact same path as in Squeezebox
Server. It's a setting in Settings/Plugins/TrackStat/Backup section.

unfortunately I already trashed it. Specifically it was saying symbols
not found in the directory which was defined for the database backup for

I have a post about my unusual configuration over in the plugins forum

I just tried to feed Trackstats my unmodified Mac based XML file which
probably led to the bad behavior. I would need some additional
assistance to come up with a strategy for importing the OS X based XML
file into Trackstats which resides on Squeezebox Server 7.4 running on

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] My mini review of the Squeezebox Radio

2009-11-02 Thread JJZolx

One thing that did bug me throughout my use of the radio though was the
now playing screen. It really bugged me that the album artwork had the
top chopped off by the progress bar and track details (particularly
annoying with the numerous album covers that show the artist, it winds
up that their head is chopped off like a photograph taken by a small
child). Perhaps some alternate configurations can be provided in future
 firmware versions.

It's increasing obvious that SqueezePlay (Controller, Radio, Touch)
needs a much more configurable Now Playing screen.

Does your TrackStat backup xml file have any characters like # 253

If it does, could you post a section of the file which contains

If this is the case I understand why you have problems, because this is

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I was just trying to feed TrackStat
the raw XML data from an iTunes Library via the backup/restore
functionality.. I saw some very vague information about how to import
the data into Trackstat that mentioned restoring the data and it's
obvious now that it won't work that way.

As long as I have your attention, maybe you could provide me with just
a bit of guidance.

I have the goal of being able to keep my ratings synch'd between iTunes
and Trackstat running on the Squeezebox Server.

My entire music library is stored on a Windows Home Server via SMB
share. I play the music and keep it all rated and organized on an iMac
running OS X 10.6.2.

Is there any way for me to share the ratings data between the Mac and
Trackstat running on the Squeezebox Server or would I have to
effectively move my iTunes library completely to the box that Squeeze
Server runs on?

Hopefully this isn't too confusing. It has long been a source of
frustration for me that I organize all of my music on my iPhone and Mac
but have no easy access to this data when playing my various other
devices, including my several Squeezebox devices.

[SlimDevices: Radio] My mini review of the Squeezebox Radio

2009-11-01 Thread jmpage2

I'm a long time fan of Slim Devices, having purchased my original SliMP3
player back in late 2001. I also have the distinction of still having
the original email from Sean Adams indicating I was the very first
pre-order in for the original Squeezebox (which I still have).

I have been interested in some kind of improved bedside/tabletop radio
for a number of years and was interested in the Squeezebox Radio almost
from the start. I was concerned about the initial bugs and quality
issues being mentioned in these forums, but went to the local Best Buy
to check the unit out anyhow.

A note to Logitech Marketing that handles the Squeeze players. The
product placement in Best Buy stores and marketing effort is terrible.
The Squeezebox units were not located with any of the other new hip
network/streaming products but were instead located with the audio video
receivers and speakers. Big disappointment as it took me a full 20
minutes to locate the units (I actually had to ask for help, something I
almost never do). It would probably be more helpful if they were
located with the network gear, or at least in the ipod/portable area.

Anyways. I convinced the Best Buy folks to open a unit up (they didn't
even have one displayed) because I really wanted to see what the
physical hardware quality was like. I had concerns that the unit would
suffer from sub-standard construction, similar to the cheapening of
buttons, etc, that I have seen on other mid-price consumer electronics
over the past few years. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that
the SB radio seemed to be built like a tank, looked gorgeous and the
buttons seemed to have positive tactile feel. I purchased one on the
spot!

When I got home and unboxed the player to get ready for set up, I was
surprised that there wasn't a more in your face setup document about
needing to set up a My Squeeze account. I think most of the turn off of
the unit has been the perceived difficulty of setup, which might be
avoided with a large color poster that shows the set up in just a few
easy steps. It should also have a big notice to contact helpful support
folks if having issues getting it set up so that it does not wind up
being returned to the store. This is a premium price product and there
should be decent telephone support for setup issues, at least for the
first 30 days after purchase.

My own setup went relatively smoothly. I used push to authenticate to
get it on my wi-fi network in a matter of seconds, and since I already
have a My Squeeze account set up for my Squeezebox Network software
running on my HP Mediasmart, I was off to the races fairly quickly.

The very first thing I wanted to do was stream some of my music to the
unit and see what audio quality was like. In a word, it sounds very
good! I would not call it audiophile quality but it certainly can hold
its own with other tabletop radio units that put out decent quality
sound for a medium sized room.

I was a bit put off by the favorites/preset process as it took me doing
some research and digging to discover how to add playlists as favorites
and then add those favorites as select buttons. This area needs some
improvement. I'd go as far as to say there should be a section in the
web setup for the Squeezebox Radio that addresses this issue.

I did find that most of the player based activities (with the very
notable omission of the above favorites/settings) were fairly intuitive.
I would like the ability to mute the annoying button press sounds, so
far I haven't found the place to do that. It gets old after a while to
hear beeps and boops every time you are navigating the menu. I did
observe that once when I left the room for a couple of hours with the
menu showing that it was still sitting at that menu screen when I
returned. There is a stopped screen saver you can define but I would
really like the option for the player to shut itself off after 15
minutes if nothing is playing and there is no activity from the user.

I did play with the unit in a dark room because I was concerned about
how well the auto dimming would work. I am a very light sleeper and any
extraneous lights keep me awake at night (LEDs especially). I was
pleasantly surprised that the dimming works fantastic. It would be nice
to set a minimum and maximum range for it. It actually gets SO dim that
in a pitch black room you will struggle to read it.

After getting all situated with presets, basic setup (Pandora, etc), I
wanted to play with the Alarm functionality. The Alarm setup was very
straight forward, but I was a bit disappointed in the actual execution.
I had programmed my unit to wake me up to one of my own playlists at
9:00AM today and was actually already awake when the alarm turned it on.
When the Alarm activated (which was actually about a full 10-15 seconds
after 9:00AM) I was greeted with some noises and a full second of high
volume music before it then started to ramp up the volume slowly as it
had been

To turn off operation beeps:
Settings Audio Sound Effects None

Initially the Album Art was about 1/3 smaller on the Radio and many
wanted larger images. I would love to see a setting option for such art
like Large (full screen like, it is now) and Small (about 1/4 to 1/3
smaller, text does not cover album). If it can only be a menu item
within Settings that would be acceptable, but it would be better IMO to
make it a simple on the fly option while in the Now Playing screen.

I suggested a knob turn in Now Playing would re-size the art on the
fly. A Knob turn currently does nothing in Now Playing (unless you push
the knob). The idea being each right click increases art size by 1/3,
each left click decreases art size by 1/3, max three turns each way,
fourth click (either direction) brings you back to the original art
size. But they seem to be interested in waiting for a third party
plugin for this type of feature (assuming it is even possible at all).

Thanks for the heads up! I suspected that there was some way to turn
off the beeps but just had not found the setting yet.

Even better than having the knob change album artwork size would be to
simply have several completely different now playing screens and allow
the knob to cycle through them. This should make just about everyone
happy.

When they found the Squeezebox Radio for me it was coming fresh off the

So, I think the sales people you talked to were misinformed, or were
simply idiots, either would not surprise.

There is already an enhancement logged for this, although it was
registered before the development of the radio and only refers to the

lot of bugs/enhancents logged against the alarm and as far as I can see
none of them get addressed. The original developer of the alarm code
