Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio Vs Boom

2009-09-27 Thread toby10

Yes, new Radio can be wired.
Radio is mono, but sounds good.
Batteries are (will be) offered as a package of a battery remote
for $49, dunno if one can just buy an extra battery.
I think you hit all the important differences between them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Power on question

2009-09-30 Thread toby10

Yes, but removing power will require a complete Radio re-boot (guessing
around 60 seconds). But yes it will then start playing the station it
was playing when it was turned off (removed power).

In a more normal usage mode, the Radio will be turned off (actually,
standby) by pressing the Power button. Then simply pressing the Play
button powers on Radio (wakes from standby) and immediately plays the
last played station.

I'm sure support is being hit hard, but I was hoping it was a simple
 reset or something.

Sounds similar to my Touch issue posted in the Beta forum. Mine as
well has somehow connected itself to a ghost account on MySB after
deleting it from my Beta test-SN-MySB account.

If I reset Touch it refuses to accept my proper MySB login info and
will only accept my test-SN Beta login (I'm guessing after a reset it
only knows about the test-SN site).
But if I connect it to SC7.4.1 it will not get my proper login info as
input into SC.

This is a perfect example of why I had previously suggested a review
edit function on Touch Radio for MySB login credentials. If a user
even changes their email address on MySB they lose all MySB functions
services on their players.

Please let me know if you resolve this, I'll do likewise. :)

MySB says just the opposite, album is available on ALL players,
commentary only on the Radio?

All works great on the Radio, pictures and all. :)

Radio sounds very good but is mono, Boom sounds better for a number of
reasons.

Boom audio advantages over Radio:
- stereo
- larger enclosure
- add a sub if desired
- audio adjustments (bass, treble)
- StereoXL (selectable DSP)

Then these first time SB and streaming customers will certainly be much

Understandable. But I can say that with well over two years using SB
players I have experienced very little downtime utilizing Internet Radio
and Music Services, and obviously these are completely dependent upon
SN/MySB being functional. I literally stream 24/7 to my Boom, it is
never off. :)

Being dependent on an online service like SN/MySB has it's advantages
and disadvantages. For me, I love having all my streaming services on
such an online service as it simplifies both management and use of my
Music Services and saved Favorite stations. All accounts and Favorites
are accessible from any computer or SB player anywhere I go (assuming I
have access to high speed internet). I bring my SB players to many
functions with friends and family, they love it, no computer needed.

The down side, as you state, is if Logitech were to pull the plug on
MySB or just stop actively supporting it. This slow death is currently
happening to the Roku service. But seeing that Logitech is investing so
much time, money, effort, and resources into MySB... plus investing
heavily into two new players (both will be BIG hits IMO) one of
these players (Radio) is almost specifically designed for MySB use
I don't see MySB having such Roku-like issues for many years to come.
It could come tomorrow, who knows, but I think this is highly unlikely.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sync is very slightly off.

2009-10-19 Thread toby10

Ikabob: Try streaming the same station(s) you are having sync issues
with on MySB using SBS, see if the sync is maintained tighter.

My guess is you are experiencing drift on MySB. Unless they changed
how players function when synced on MySB, here is the difference between
SBS and MySB sync when playing a radio stream:

SBS: server gets a single stream, shares it with all synced players,
better sync
MySB: each player connected to MySB gets it's own unique stream even
when synced, not so great sync (i.e. drift)

Put another way: If you are streaming a 128k radio stream to four
synced players:
SBS = 1x128k stream via your ISP, shares this single stream with four
players, ISP usage = 128k
MySB = 4x128k = 512k, each player getting it's own unique stream, ISP
usage = 512k

IMO, as I've stated before in another thread, they should have a sign

It's just like when you have to buy a whole assortment of 20 different

I do agree they should be available separately as well. But I disagree
that anyone would not have need for a remote while on battery usage. In
fact, I'd certainly have more need of the remote if using the Radio on

Editing ones current MySB account info was brought up in Beta testing

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] preset and favorite bugs w/server 7.4.1

2009-10-25 Thread toby10

MySqueezeBox Integration only syncs basic player settings, not
Favorites. Syncing of Favorites between SBS and MySB is coming but is
not currently supported. I suspect this might be part of your losing
Podcasts and Favorites as your Radio is switching between SBS and MySB.

There certainly are many ways to control the SB players, but that's
part of the flexibility of the SB system to suit many varying needs and
different usage models. Better documentation of each type of control
would be nice though.

What might help you, and as I've suggested to friends family that I
have turned onto the SB players, is to try and use one server (local SBS
on your computer or MySB online) to control your player in the beginning
to get a better feel for using the SB system. Preferably SBS as you
have better and more control over the players and access to your local
music. Just an idea. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] preset and favorite bugs w/server 7.4.1

2009-10-26 Thread toby10

Many SB customers use these players almost exclusively for Internet
Radio usage, and the SB Radio is particularly geared for that purpose.

So much so that out of the box setup pretty much insists on connecting
to MySB online, which is great for first time SB users with no local
server but is then overly complicated for existing SB users running a
local server.

As Radish suggests, for Internet Radio Podcast usage, just leave it
on MySB online.
You'll give up some UI and customization controls using MySB over SBS,
but it also reduces the complexity for online content usage. :)

I suspect your Radio is actually connected to the free online Logitech
server www.MySqueezeBox.com, not connected to your local computer server
(the one you downloaded) called SqueezeBox Server (SBS) which is where
you seem to have saved your Favorites.

With your local SBS server running, from Radio go to My Music, this
should offer to switch Radio to your local computer where your Favorites
are located (I think).

2009-11-01 Thread toby10

To turn off operation beeps:
Settings Audio Sound Effects None

Initially the Album Art was about 1/3 smaller on the Radio and many
wanted larger images. I would love to see a setting option for such art
like Large (full screen like, it is now) and Small (about 1/4 to 1/3
smaller, text does not cover album). If it can only be a menu item
within Settings that would be acceptable, but it would be better IMO to
make it a simple on the fly option while in the Now Playing screen.

I suggested a knob turn in Now Playing would re-size the art on the
fly. A Knob turn currently does nothing in Now Playing (unless you push
the knob). The idea being each right click increases art size by 1/3,
each left click decreases art size by 1/3, max three turns each way,
fourth click (either direction) brings you back to the original art
size. But they seem to be interested in waiting for a third party
plugin for this type of feature (assuming it is even possible at all).

With your computer off dial the Radio to Internet Radio Local then
play a station, does it play properly.
Radio may ask you to connect to MySqueezeBox.com.

You are now on the online server, no computer needed. Log your
computer onto www.MySqueezeBox.com, go to Player, you should see your
Radio listed.
Now create your Favorites and install Apps as desired on this
interface, not on your local server computer.

I presume you already created a free www.MySqueezeBox.com account?
Registered the account via email? Entered you account info onto your
local computer server SBS MySqueezeBox?

sound during a power outage. The 9v battery backup in these types of

on. Many such alarms also break down after a while, can have their
volume levels at zero without you knowing it, the radio station might be
 off the air, etc.

Yes, there are potentially more failure points to a client-server
product, but the Radio and Boom can sound an alarm without a server
present. You also forgot the biggest failure point of all. Simply
 sleeping through the alarm.

Myself, I usually wake up from 1 to 5 minutes before any alarm I set,
regardless of what time it's for and regardless of where I'm sleeping.
 But that's just me. ;)

I'm tossing my current clock radio when the SBS comes in. If you're
not intending to wake up to music, then just use any old buzzer alarm -
or the one on your watch, phone, iPod, TV, whatever.

Don't know where you get that a $5 alarm clock with a battery backup
won't sound an alarm during a power outage, mine do. My one clock went
for weeks not even plugged in before I noticed the cord unplugged.
Every symptom you detail (volume at zero, station off the air) are also
potential problems to Radio and Boom (in addition to the dozen other
things that can go haywire on a networked device).

I am certain MANY will buy this great Radio for use as a bedside
alarm/clock/radio and LOVE it for such use. But not I. :)
Also, check out the Boom forum for the posts on when the failsafe alarm
did not function.

But then I'm not the type to lay in bed to listen to music either.
Like you I also tend to wake up just before the alarm goes off, in any
part of the world, in any time zone. It is odd. :)

don't even recommend that this be user controllable, just make it so
that when the alarm is going off the brightness is minimum 25%, etc.

For me it's not a big deal to have separate controlled brightness for
all the different player states you mention.

Yeah, completely agree on a minimum brightness when an alarm goes off.
Not only to see the time but also to help navigate the buttons for

My idea for user controlled brightness per screen is because 25%
minimum brightness may work for you, but the next person may want 50%.

Not a fix, but a workaround: Bypass the MySB login section on the
Radio, connect the Radio to your SBS running on your computer. This
should register the player on MySB.com for you.
Assuming you are running SBS and have your MySB login credentials on
SBS Settings MySqueezeBox

The general consensus (no actual inside information) is that your
product suggestion for a Boom replacement is likely coming. Color LCD
screen, almost certainly. Improved acoustics, would be great but I'm
not sure they could make it any better than it is without enlarging the
Boom's enclosure. HDMI, not likely as it would add little benefit to a
portable music player.

Big question is when we might see a Boom II (assuming one is coming at

If Radio is currently on SBS: from Radio go to Settings Advanced

If SBS is turned off first: from Radio go to Internet Radio or My Apps

For many, if currently on MySB then selecting My Music should just
switch to the local SBS (it does this now with one extra click on the
Radio).
And if on SBS then selecting Internet Radio or any Music Service within
Apps should just switch to MySB.

But then for many others, like myself, I don't want to be pushed to
MySB for such usage preferring to stay on SBS for it's added features

I completely understand both preferences. But now how do you
accommodate both?? That's the hard part. :)

Dunno if the exact same issue, but it sounds like what happened to me a
couple days ago. Radio was on MySB and playing fine, selected a
different stream (I think it was mms format, but not certain), no audio.
I figured it was just a bad stream, selected a few others, still no
audio. So then I figured MySB was was possibly going through an upgrade
or something. Switched Radio to SBS, STILL NO AUDIO. Re-boot fixed
it.

I really wasn't paying close enough attention at the time to remember
enough of the details until it was too late, nor have I been able to
reproduce it, so I never filed a bug. :(

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

I've never used Roku, but a SB player like your Radio must be connected
to a server, somewhere, somehow to play a stream.
You can connect your Radio to the SBS 7.4 server on your computer or
you can connect it to the MySB.com server online (no computer needed).

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread toby10

Well, your computer has an operating system and other components a
simple thin client device does not have. SB players are thin
clients that require a connection to a server to function. And,
actually, whatever program on your computer is playing the station
stream is basically acting as the server per se.

Absent a server some of the SB players have limited abilities like play
from the line-in source and/or will (should) function as an alarm clock
with a basic audio alarm (no stream).

As for Roku I'd guess that your Roku player connects to the online Roku
server without you even knowing it. But again, I've never used a Roku
player so this is just a guess. My Yamaha AVR connects to (and only to)
the vTuner online server.

Little do you know that by purchasing a Squeeze device you have played
into their plans to market you relentlessly through their Squeezebox

This is a marketing decision made by Logitech. There is really no
reason that the Radio must be connected to the Internet for setup and
if you do some searching around you will find some workarounds that
exist to let you get the radio set up without connection to
 MySqueezebox.com.

I run my own Squeezebox Server at home for streaming of my own music
library and simply point all of my Squeezeboxes to that.

Except that won't help Susan as she specifically does not want a
computer running. I agree wholeheartedly that the Radio should offer a
connection to either SBS or MySB at initial setup. But essentially one
or the other must be chosen, and for use absent a computer then a MySB
account setup is the only real option.

I think the whole SN/MySB handling all Music Services and Apps is a
great way to go. A one time setup online at MySB.com and all my SB
players will function anywhere, anytime, with or without a computer.
Once setup one never needs to log in to their MySB account ever again.
:)

Susan: Try it, you'll like it! :) Create a free www.MySqueezeBox.com
account using your computer, enter that login info onto your Radio at
setup, you are off and running.

But, I'd bet once you see the offerings potential of the Radio and
the numerous free Apps, you'll be logging on again to try more Apps and
free services. :)

I don't use SB players for any alarm functions (see other posts, I've

which *might* be a more reliable alarm function:

- set ONLY a built in default alarm sound (forget trying to stream as
the alarm)
- dismiss alarm
- press Preset to your desired stream

Or can it be setup in a manner where pressing a Preset does both?
1. dismisses alarm
2. starts to stream that Preset

For *me* it is the reliance on all of the items in the chain to all
work as expected that I do not trust, all to perform a simple task. In
some scenarios all of the following must be functioning properly to wake
someone:
electric power, computer, router, WiFi, modem, ISP, SBS, MySB, internet
station

. all to accomplish what my $5 alarm clock with a simple 9v battery
backup has done flawlessly for over a decade.:)

internet radio station:
Boom: Kept playing stream, no problems
Radio: Stopped playing stream, no error or stopped message, icon did
display Stopped

Earlier today (unrelated to above) Radio rebooted itself while playing
and could not reconnect to MySB (blue icon), tried Try Again several
times but failed to connect first few attempts, but did eventually
reconnect. Boom did also disconnect from MySB at this time (best I can
tell) but Boom's screen simply showed Stopped for the station stream,
pressing Play re-started stream and required no interaction from me to
reconnect to MySB.

I presume the US-VA MySB server was taken down or rebooted?

Radio not able to connect to MySB and Boom showing a stopped stream may
not be related, I dunno. But it was very coincidental that both
happened at about the same time (guessing as Boom and Radio are in
different parts of the house).

OIC, so once bypassing initial MySB registration, then connecting to
SBS, you are never again bothered with MySB registration queries.
Unless you try to connect it to MySB I'd guess. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Good Christmas gift for Mom?

2009-12-13 Thread toby10

I say yes.

p.s. There are several NASCAR specific stations and podcasts via the
Internet Radio menu.
Never tried them myself, more an F1 fan myself, but I know I've seen
them in the menu structure before.

p.s.s. Imagine the fun you can have controlling their Radio remotely,
you could drive them NUTZ! :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-14 Thread toby10

BigPotato;492444 Wrote:
I'm pretty sure the Roku devices don't have the same requirements as a
SB regarding a server. The device may query a Roku server to check for
firmware updates, but the internet radio functionality and a web server
 for configuration is all built-in.

Way off topic, but this thread has pretty much run it's course
anyway

I had a chance encounter with a Roku user over the weekend at a Holiday
party. We were both eyeing the party hosts Hi-Fi gear, so I knew we
would hit it off. The conversation eventually turned to streaming
devices. She has two Roku players, when I told her I use SqueezeBox
players she slapped me and walked away.

I'm kidding :) But she did reveal some interesting tidbits about Roku
players that I think may answer how the Roku players can be utilized
absent a server. The two most glaring tidbits were:
1. Roku players are limited to a total of 18 presets/favorites
streams
2. Roku supports no third party Music Services (Napster, Pandora,
Last.fm, etc..)

Now, to be fair, she did say she only uses one model player (two of the
same players in her home), she's never connected them to her computer,
and she has not logged into the online Roku server in a LONG time. So
she may not be up on the latest Roku offerings, but was rather confident
the above issues were accurate in her usage.

Are these stated restrictions true? Maybe you Roku users could
comment?

If they are true then that probably explains why a Roku player can be
self managed within the player itself without need of a server. I'm not
knocking the simplistic architecture of Roku players, but I guess
simplicity has it's price: less configurable, less customizable, no
Music Services, limited presets/favorites, fewer choices.

I think it would be quite difficult to cram all of the SqueezeBox
features, benefits, customizations, Music Services (and management of
them), flexibility, etc.. into the hardware player itself. But then
this feature rich architecture does require connection to a server.

Advantages, disadvantages, and the associated price paid for each. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Limited settings for Radio under Squeezebox Server?

2009-12-16 Thread toby10

I can confirm that Erland's Daylight Clock screensaver works fine on
my Radio.

Make sure after selecting all Applets to be installed you then select
the Install/Remove option to actually perform the Install.
Does your Radio show installing then restarting after you actually
select Install?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

CECat, BigPotato,

Thanks, that all makes sense.

Roku Radio is a standalone player with a speaker, no server needed,
stated limitations apply.
Roku Soundbridge is similar to the SB1/2/3, audio output to hi-fi,
stated limitations do NOT apply if connected to a server, can use third
party Music Services.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] RadioTime app?

you can customize the stations with a radiotime account.

Yup.

A few examples of such customizations via RadioTime App:
- more accurate local stations (SBS and MySB just use a general
GEO-IP guess of your locals)
- add presets folders within RadioTime App
- add stations to your presets folders direct from the RadioTime.com
site
