[RBW] How can I improve the rear-loaded handling of my new Sam Hill?

2010-06-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Disappointment. I've owned 3 Riv customs, designed for fast road riding, and
all, particularly the second two, have been magnificent in fit, feel and
handling, even with rear loads. So I was hugely disappointed to take my SH
out for a quick 20 mile shakedown ride with 35 lb or so in the rear (An
Ostrich in the front, but lightly loaded). Too much front end vagueness:
fast downhill sweeper was uneasy-making, and, coming back up sitting at 5-6
mph, the front end wandered all over the place.

I have the bars about even with the plane between rump and nose of saddle;
don't want them higher.

Riv build, so Jack Browns; stiff Tubus Logo rack. The panniers were not
optimal, having been borrowed from my (better handling under rear load,
actually) '73 Motobecane flexy 531 racing bike and sitting a bit further
back than they need to be.

But what can I do to reduce the front end flop? New fork? New bike?

2010-06-18 Thread JoelMatthews
If VO can source one of the finest seat posts ever and sell it for
$50, then perhaps there is hope for a new round of quills...even
 though the market is small.

I expect you will continue to see good builders like Bruce Gordon and
Curtlo and others continue to make brazed steel quills as long as
there is demand.

Sourcing a whole line of drop forged quill stems is a whole 'nother
animal - both versus the small shop quills and seat posts. Tooling
and skill set is unique and costs a lot to get. Nitto was there when
quills were the market and owing to quirks in the Japanese market
never went away. Maybe Chris and his partners can track down a
serviceable set of tooling from Italy or something.

Otherwise, I just don't see someone spending tens of thousands of
dollars to start manufacturing something that is not going to sell in
numbers. Especially with Nitto and the custom builders already
reaching a lot of the market.

Chris has pulled rabbits out of the hat before ...

[RBW] Wool socks for summer

2010-06-18 Thread Bridgestone
I've finally decided that life is too short to wear crappy socks. I'm
not just talking about biking, I'm talking about all the time.

My feet stink to high hell, but I have been wearing these bargain
basement cotton jobbers, so that's part of the rub.

I love the idea of a 100% wool sock, but I don't know how practical
that is. Has anyone tried the Kangaroo Socks from Rivendell? Or do you
have another source for great socks?

Plus, if I could get something in white to wear with shorts, my wife
would be less inclined to make fun of my sartorial choices.

Re: [RBW] How can I improve the rear-loaded handling of my new Sam Hill?

2010-06-18 Thread Phil Roberts
Patrick,
I'm at a loss why your Hillborne is behaving that way. My experience is
exactly the opposite; after many many miles touring on my Expedition (which
I still love) my Hillborne in comparison is rock solid with a loaded rear
rack, and is one of the easiest bikes to noodle up a steep slope. Mine is a
52cm frame, Tubus Vega rear rack and some ancient REI large panniers I've
been using for years. Could it be my frame uses 650B wheels? I tour with
cheap Col de la Vies, but run Hetres around town. The Hetres do make a
difference speed wise and though it's not exactly like hurling along on my
Heron with skinny tires, I don't find a problem pushing along at 18-20mph on
my morning runs. My drop bars (Nitto Noodle) are ever-so-slightly below
saddle height and although the front end is lighter feeling with a full
camping load on the back I do not experience the front-end vagueness you're
experiencing. I'm not downplaying your experience, I'm just not sure what's
causing it. I hope someone else might shed a light.

But what can I do to reduce the front end flop? New fork? New bike?

Sorry to hear you're disappointed with the handling as loaded.
However, I know from experience that my Atlantis handles poorly for my
riding style with 25-30 lbs of rear load on a Nitto big rear rack. My
solution has been to distribute the load front rear. Yes, it
requires 4 bags another rack but with low riders in front the bike
is rock solid. My camping load is a total of around 40 lbs in the
bags (Acorn Boxy Rando not included in totals). Most neutral, least
sensitive handling is with 25 lbs in front and 15 lbs rear. IMHO, the
optimal placement for loads is impacted more by the rider than the
bike. Others have been pleased with rear only loads of course the
conventional wisdom is that Rivs are rear loaders. Do some
experiments to see what works for you; you may be pleasantly
surprised.

2010-06-18 Thread Ken Freeman
Similarly for me, but not with a Riv. My Woodrup has a tendency for the
front end to wander when climbing at low speed. Adding my moderate front
load with as close to a constructeur arrangement as possible for that bike
has made the front somewhat more stable than it was.

The Woodrup has less trail than your Rivs, I'm pretty sure.

wear them almost every time I go out on a longish ride, winter and

I wear wool socks year 'round for cycling, work, etc. I have no non-
wool socks; some are part non-wool.

For cycling I generally wear Smartwool (cycling and their hiking and
dress socks) although the wool content in their cycling socks has
dropped and the technical aspect has increased, which is not IMHO
an improvement in the product. I find wool socks very comfortable,
much better in hot weather than non-wool socks. I no longer get hot
spots under my feet on bike rides of any length (including brevets
up to 375 miles a few years ago). The socks don't stink, ever.

that is. Has anyone tried the Kangaroo Socks from Rivendell? Or do you
have another source for great socks?

Plus, if I could get something in white to wear with shorts, my wife
would be less inclined to make fun of my sartorial choices.

I wear wool socks year 'round for cycling, work, etc. I have no non-wool
 socks; some are part non-wool.

For cycling I generally wear Smartwool (cycling and their hiking and dress
socks) although the wool content in their cycling socks has dropped and the
technical aspect has increased, which is not IMHO an improvement in the
product. I find wool socks very comfortable, much better in hot weather
than non-wool socks. I no longer get hot spots under my feet on bike
rides of any length (including brevets up to 375 miles a few years ago).
  The socks don't stink, ever.

[RBW] Sam Hillborne with Shimano BR R550 setup help

2010-06-18 Thread BOZ
Hello

New member here and a new owner of a Sam Hillborne.

I am looking for some help with my brake setup.

attempting to install Shimano BR-R550 Cantis.I have mavic a319 rims.
I am following the instructions however they do not include specs for
the link wire or brake pad spacers.

Anyone out there have a similiar setup that could tell me which link
wire to use E or F and the the thin spacer or thick spacer for the
brake pad.

Thanks.

I think the last 100% wool sock which was commercially made was the Wigwam
Berber. Even then, I suspect and/or half-recollect it was a 95% wool, but
don't have any and it's been a few years (wow...more than a few years.) .
They were thick, beastly things - definitely not merino.

Most manufacturers use a percentage of nylon to help them keep shape and not
stretch out. Everyone _used_ to have at least one which had a high wool
content. Now, even Filson uses only 64% and 53% merino on their Merino
crew socks in midweight and lightweight models, respectively.

Once upon a time, Filson breifly made a low cut wool sock which I bought a
dozen of. Despite the unfortunate blantant logo placement choice, they have
worked nicely.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/318360376

The only sock I've been impressed with of late came in the form of a company
called Darn Tough. They sent me a sample a while back - a thick,
winterish weight - but they do list low cut socks, are made in Vermont and
seem to be in the 60-70% merino range.

http://www.darntough.com/

Look around to try to find a fabric weight which works for you. There are
definitely differences in the density, in addition to the blend of the
material.

The Kangaroo socks which Riv sells are a good weight for me. I really don't
find wool to be a warm fabric for moving around in, and I expect you'll find
that they have less odor. You might also investigate the shoes, and see if
that's one of the culprits as well.

best o luck!

I have a pair of the 'darn tough' socks. Mine run a little small but
are true-to-their-name.

I decided the same thing years ago. Smartwool (softest, but short-lived and
more expensive), Castelli (thin, wear well, but not soft), and some cheapos
(but US-made) from Target (way cheap, wear like iron, and feel pretty good
too). Military surplus (even cheaper, but feel like horse hair). I own
nothing but wool socks now, but I'm otherwise not too picky.

But as you can tell from the varied responses, you might have some
experimenting to do before you find a favorite. Have fun!

Re: [RBW] How can I improve the rear-loaded handling of my new Sam Hill?

2010-06-18 Thread CycloFiend
Hmmm...

- I'd take a look at the fore/aft saddle placement with respect to the bb.
- I might drop the bars slightly - IIRC, don't your other bikes have bars
1-2 below the saddle?

Both those steps could shift just a bit more weight onto the front end.

The technique which always worked for me while climbing is to pull down with
my elbows. It's an mtb trick which helped to get up steepy-steep bits
without popping wheelies.

It would be interesting to see what happened if you took about 5-7 lb's out
of the rear and put them up front. When you say the panniers were not
optimal, how so? Do they tend to hold the weight more rearward? More
weight behind the rear axle will tend to act as a lever.

If you are comparing the loaded handling to the flexy 531 bike, you might
want to give it a few rides before changing much. It might be less of a
correction than you think right now.

hope that helps a bit,

- Jim

i wear the kangaroos, and wear them for everything in the summer fall
spring. longer ones in the winter. they last longer than the wigwam
or smartwool for me, and are a huge improvement over cotton.

Re: [RBW] How can I improve the rear-loaded handling of my new Sam Hill?

2010-06-18 Thread Bill Gibson
Methodically move weight from back to front, if possible try a low rider
front, even overloading the front to see what the matter is. Keep light
stuff that you need handy in the handlebar bag. I try to keep all loads
between the axles and low, so long as it doesn't interfere with pedaling,
etc.

Analysis: How does speed change it? Is it worse at low speed? Does it go
away at higher speed, or do high speed corrections go too far, or seem
sluggish? Is it - the flop- more of a low speed lunging left to right when
the front bag is heavily loaded? Flop has a technical meaning beyond what
the front feels like in some literature... but the easy thing is to change
the way the bike is loaded. I'm sure all loads are well secured.

I usually adapt to a bike's idiosyncrasies after a few rides... we ride the
bike, not the other way round, mostly.

Disappointment. I've owned 3 Riv customs, designed for fast road riding,

out for a quick 20 mile shakedown ride with 35 lb or so in the rear (An
Ostrich in the front, but lightly loaded). Too much front end vagueness:
fast downhill sweeper was uneasy-making, and, coming back up sitting at 5-6
mph, the front end wandered all over the place.

 I have the bars about even with the plane between rump and nose of saddle;
 don't want them higher.

New fork? New bike?
