[RBW] S240's and Lyme disease question.

2012-10-20 Thread Jimmy Hutch
Hilarious!  The idea of S24O sounds so appealing until I realize that it
includes sleeping in the woods voluntarily.  Jim, you may joke about wild
beasts and serial killers but the last time i slept in the woods I'm fairly
confident it was littered with them and I simply couldn't sleep.

This coming from a guy who is very comfortable sleeping on the NYC subway any
time, day or night.

I'm thinking about finding a good S24Oinahotelwithabar - safe from Lyme disease
and wild beasts!

[RBW] Re: Bay Area paint job recommendations?

I'll second Ed Litton. He's not your guy for a inexpensive job, but his
work is excellent. He paints Bruce Gordon's bikes, I saw hanging in his
shop all sorts of fancy old and new frames.

[RBW] Beautiful Sam at Bikeworks NYC

2012-10-20 Thread Jimmy Hutch
I spied my first look at a beautiful Sam Hillborne while visiting Bikeworks
NYC this afternoon. Bikeworks NYC (http://bikecult.com/works/) had a new
Sam with double top tube, albatross bars, bar end shifters and cork grips
on display. It was only the 3rd Rivendell I have seen up close, the first
being my AHH, the second an Atlantis belonging to a guy from Pittsburgh who
was in NYC for the 5-borough bike tour. I had to buy my AHH having never
seen a Rivendell, so if anyone is in the market, I highly suggest stopping
by to see the Sam in person.

I dropped my AHH off for some routine maintenance and they were
very accommodating. I'll report back on the quality of service when I pick
it up.

Pedals and jacket are sold. SRAM shifters are still available. At roughly
the price of bar end shifters and nice brake levers, it's a good buy and
could easily pass as new. –Sean

[RBW] Re: Chain length rule-of-thumb?

2012-10-20 Thread Jeremy Till
As long as it shifts smoothly into and out of the big/big combo (i.e., you
can't feel any binding) you should be good. Cage angle doesn't make much
of a difference.

I use the big-big + 1 complete link (i.e. one whole set of inner and outer
plates) rule of thumb and it's served me well. The caveat i would add is
that big big means the minimum amount of chain that would go over both

Re: [RBW] Re: Chain length rule-of-thumb?

2012-10-20 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks Doug, Andy and Jeremy. The new and shorter chain didn't suck
during its first ride, including dusty dirt, which is an improvement
over the previous, longer chain which was starting to suck more
frequently. As I said, there is no binding or grumbling when shifting
to the big/big, and there is still slack left in the rd on this
combination. Overall the system shifts very well with the new, shorter
chain.

I suppose my question was moved by a dim, unreflective supposition
that more slack means less tension, and that less tension means less
friction and wear -- I am obviously in mind still back in the 1950s
with those French racing derailleurs that allowed you to adjust rear
derailleur spring tension manually.

Multispeed bikes are so *complicated*, aren't they?

As long as it shifts smoothly into and out of the big/big combo (i.e., you
can't feel any binding) you should be good. Cage angle doesn't make much of
 a difference.

I use the big-big + 1 complete link (i.e. one whole set of inner and outer
plates) rule of thumb and it's served me well. The caveat i would add is
that big big means the minimum amount of chain that would go over both
cogs and still *easily* close--i.e. it wouldn't be a stretch to connect.
Then add one complete link and cut from there.

[RBW] FS: Shimano SPD-SL Cycling shoes size 7.5 / Euro 41

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Faller

Time to clean out some bike goodies. I have a pair of Shimano SPD-SL
cycling shoes, model # SH-R 097W in size 7.5 (Euro 41). They've hardly
been used; probably ridden under 40 miles and are in really nice
condition. They currently have my old Look cleats on them, but will take
SPD, too. Technically they're women's shoes, but they fit my small feet
real well. They're a light gray color and are gender-neutral in appearance.

Asking $30, which includes shipping in CONUS.

[RBW] Bullmoose Bars: New v. Old

2012-10-20 Thread tragicallyaverage
Trying out some old Bullmoose bars on a 650b conversion and was wondering:
are there major difference in feel/comfort between the original 80's bars
and the Riv re-makes?
I know the obvious ones about the shape and sweepback and overall beautiful
aesthetic of the newer ones.
Has anyone used both the originals and the newer ones?
I enjoy the simplicity of them and ease of setup, just wondering if I
should try and track down some of the newer ones, or if I'm alright
sticking with the older variety.
Thanks for any advice/info in advance!

Re: [RBW] Chain length rule-of-thumb?

2012-10-20 Thread Kerry Kunsman
First, you always want to make sure you can reach the big-ring,
big-sprocket combo. You might not ever use it (and you shouldn't),
but if you accidentally shift into it (sudden red light as your
cruising along in the big ring) and you can't reach it, you might
destroy your rear derailer. That being said, Sheldon's site has good
advice. I have always used the method of, with the chain threaded
normally, carefully shifting to the big-big combo, then check that
you could remove one link pair when the derailer is fully
extended. You need this little bit of slack so the chain can ride up
and onto the big ring before settling onto it. More slack is OK as
long as the derailer can take up the slack. Even if it can't, you
may get chain suck and skipping, and you'll definitely hear a lot of
complaining from your drivetrain, but ay least you won't permanently
destroy things.

[RBW] FS: 60cm Sam Hillborne in Seattle (mine) with cream headtube and lots of stuff.

2012-10-20 Thread Scot Brooks
Due to some cash flow requirements, I'm attempting to sell my
year-old-dear-old Sam. I won't be totally bikeless as I have my recently
built Soma to keep me company. I had Riv paint the head tube and lug
windows cream when I ordered it, which came out beautifully I think. It's
also got a dynamo hub and headlamp. You can have either the Soma tires *or *two
sets of Marathon Greenguards (38c with maybe 1,000 miles and 47c
practically new). It's also got the awesome cork-then-cloth-then-shellac
taping job.

Here's a link to an imgur album of some photos I took
todayhttp://imgur.com/a/W7UoL#0

Here's a link to a google docs spreadsheet of everything it's got and the
original
pricehttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At8Rv4lmrOhcdGJ1cGtDdzRQWnhLc3AtcW4xTVgyNnc

I've got it on consignment over at 2020 Cycle in Seattle's Central

even buy it with a credit card. They're keeping a percentage, but they're
really nice and have taken good care of me in the past. Asking $2200, but

[RBW] Re: Beautiful Sam at Bikeworks NYC

2012-10-20 Thread gep71154
I'm sure NYC has lots of good bike shops, or at least a handful---I of
course wouldn't know---but I have a thing for Dave Perry, and kind of a
long history, although it's all recent news to me. He attended my book talk
when I was in NYC and was super gracious, really nice. He introduced
himself and I recognized him barely but knew his name from his Bike Cult
book of many years ago. I hooked up with an old Bstone cow-orker now living
in Brooklyn, and we were walking in that part of town (lower east side, I
think it is) and saw the same purple Zeus bike that I'd seen earlier
outside the place I spoke at. It was outside a bike shop (BikeWorks NYC),
which Dave said was his, so we went in and - if the do sell aluminum or
carbon, I didn't seen any. It's small, but a really good shop. I talked to
Ben and --- either Willard or Travis, sorry, another mechanic--and Dave,
and I asked him where he grew up and he said Redwood City, CA, and then for
me (maybe won't be to you) it got interesting. He said he raced, and I knew
of a Dave Perry (2x district champion on the road), and it was him. We know
lots of the same people.
The thing about Dave is, he is SOO unracy, or at least not racy in
an annoying way. He knows that world and those bikes and I doubt there's
anybody with a broader range of bike knowledge than Dave. But you'd never
know it, because he's so low key, as is his shop. It's like finding Bob
Dylan owning a record store and working the counter, stocking the bins.
I like NYC and I've always thought it would be good to have a dealer there,
so I have been talking to Dave about it. He has no room, but he likes the
bikes, and we sold him that Sam so he could get a feel for them.
It seems like a good fit, but I have too much respect for Dave and for
myself (and too much pride) to beg. We aren't looking for dealers at all,
anyway. WHen we sell to a dealer, we cut our margin to essentially nothing
so the dealer can make the money--the alternative being to raise the prices
to make room for us AND the dealer to make money, but then a $2300 bike
would cost $2600, and when our normal way is to sell direct, it just
doesn't make sense.
Still, I hope he becomes a dealer, and he is the only dealer in the country
we don't have that I really pine forbut whether he is or not, I totally
recommend him--as do others, I see.
He grew up in Redwood City, CA, about an hour-by-car from here, and we
raced at the same time. There were some overlapping years of it, anyway. I

Re: [RBW] Re: Beautiful Sam at Bikeworks NYC

2012-10-20 Thread Peter Morgano
NYC does not have alot of good bike shops, unfortunately. On the bright
side Bikeworks NYC is an awesome shop, and are known by many the un-racer
as a place to go as a respite from the CF-sub 1000 gram crowd.

when I was in NYC and was super gracious, really nice. He introduced
himself and I recognized him barely but knew his name from his Bike Cult

in Brooklyn, and we were walking in that part of town (lower east side, I
think it is) and saw the same purple Zeus bike that I'd seen earlier
outside the place I spoke at.
I like NYC and I've always thought it would be good to have a dealer
there, so I have been talking to Dave about it. He has no room, but he
likes the bikes, and we sold him that Sam so he could get a feel for them.
Still, I hope he becomes a dealer, and he is the only dealer in the
country we don't have that I really pine forbut whether he is or not, I
totally recommend him--as do others, I see.
He grew up in Redwood City, CA, about an hour-by-car from here, and we
raced at the same time. There were some overlapping years of it, anyway. I

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose Bars: New v. Old

2012-10-20 Thread Joe Bernard
I've only used the new ones - which I like a lot, but I need to cut a
little off the ends for my short arms - but the only major difference I see
is that the originals had a straight section instead of the continuous
arcing curve of the Rivs. I doubt there's much difference in grip position.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose Bars: New v. Old

2012-10-20 Thread Jeremy Till
There were many variations on the bullmoose theme that came on early MTB's.
Some had much more vertical rise than reach, others were flatter. Some
were cheap, heavy, chromed steel, others were nice chromoly. Of the ones
i've seen, the 80's ones were generally much straighter--with less sweep to
the grip area--than the Riv/Nitto remakes.
