[RBW] A Little dirt riding on a Friday report.
Decided to do some exploring around my home. Road over to Big Tujunga Canyon and rode up Oro Vista Rd a private drive with access to the Western part of the Angeles National Forest. I had wanted to to catch Conover Fire Rd but ended up on some steep single track which finally connected to the BP Line Rd which I took West. I dropped down to Little Tujunga Canyon Rd by way of the Ebby Herreres Truck Trail. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalpusher61/sets/72157633119051057/ Once on Little Tujunga Canyon Rd I headed South West towards Hansen Dam up and over and dropped into the Wash to see if it was possible to navigate back up to Big Tujunga Canyon on dirt back home. This was a disappointment as the trail is all sand. I climbed with Homer up a steep concrete bank back out to Wentworth Street and back home. As I left late in the day the temperature was around 75F I'll be riding coastal in the Summer. [RBW] Re: Tips for Removing Cork Grips?
I suppose it depends what kind of glue you put them on with. I've taken cork grips off several times with 100% success. The glue Riv recommends has changed a couple times in the handful of years since I bought my first pair of Portuguese cork grips. I ran out of the stuff I initially bought last time I installed grips and am needing to get some more to put the grips back on the wife's Betty Foy after some lever/shifter upgrades. I was thinking to use one of the goops already on hand but love how the old stuff holds until you break it free. Basically what I do is hold the grip with both hands and gently twist. Gently is the wrong word... I squeeze it with a 2-handed death grip and with all my might I rotate it as smoothly as I can. It resists at first but I keep pressure until it slips. Then it just comes off. The old glue is easy to chip off the bars with a plastic scraper. What is this magical glue? you might ask... I can't remember the name off the top of my head. I'm optimistic I'll recognize it when I'm standing in front of the adhesives at the hardware store. I'll report back when/if I figure it out. Good luck. --Smitty On Friday, March 29, 2013 11:48:23 AM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote: I'll be giving the bull moose Bosco bars a try, shifting from Albatross bars. [RBW] Re: Tips for Removing Cork Grips?
When I used glue, Riv recommended Gorilla glue mentioned above. Based on forensic analysis of the broken grips appears the glue did not adhere evenly between the cork and bar (user error a readily acknowledged possibility). Rotating to remove caused uneven pressure leading to the breakdown. I do not grip my bars hard in any event. I've since stopped using glue altogether. [RBW] fs: Rivendell ~ A. Homer Hilsen 59cm
Hey there! For sale is one A. Homer Hilsen - 59cm (made for 700c). I just recently picked this up from member Fknel. Frank informed me that It's from the first batch. It's a Waterford build with a Nobillette fork. I bought it from Douglas Brooks (DBRK). Frank also noted that It's painted french (Herse) blue. The bike has a few paint scratches but otherwise is great. Hey, it's a vicious circle on the Group! I sold my last AHH to Frank and missed it alot! So after a short while I was lusting after another AHH and made contact with Frank. ...So I was planning on having it repainted and setting it up like a Hunqapillar with with some Alabatross bars (or Moustache) and Big Apple tires. But the Hunq has been growing on me! And I just watched the Hunq video on the Riv site which pretty much sold me prompted this ad. So I think I'm going to sell this buy one when I'm in the Bay Area in May. I paid $1000 plus shipping. I'll be asking $900 shipped via FedEx/UPS within the U.S. I only ask that PayPal is Personal / Payment Owed to avoid fees. Pick-up in Chicago and we'll arrange a nice price. New Homer Hilsens are now $2300. There's some minor chips in the paint, there are NO dings/dents. Shimano headset included. Also of mention, this one only has two water bottle bosses (not three) as I guess the first batch of AHH's only came with the standard two. More photos? Questions? When I first called and talked to Keven about sizing he was 100% sure I had messed up the PBH measurement and told me do it a few more times over the weekend and call back the next week. Sure enough he was right and I had mis-measured by a significant enough amount that I had moved up from a 58 to a 61. Start is in Ventura, Up the River Trail to sulphur Mtn where it is a 10 mile dirt climb, with a great drop back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country roads and the river trail. Meet up in Ventura near Garden St and Santa Clara by 9 and hit the road around 9:30. This is a no man left behind sort of ride. We will be taking breaks for re-groups etc. I recommend 3 water bottles as a minimum for the climb up Sulphur. Tires 32mm wide for the dirt, gearing for 8-10% grades and brakes in order for the back side of the mountain are all suggested as well. We will stop at one of the many options for lunch in Ojai to grab something quick to eat and get back on the Road. This is a no host ride and not associated or sponsored by Ocean Air Cycles, just a bunch of like minded folks getting together for a fun ride. Feel free to invite friends and spread the word. [RBW] Re: Anybody try a 650b Ram with Hetres?
An old thread, but I'm also curious to hear from others about this Ram/Hetre love child. I'm looking at acquiring a used Ram, and like to hear about how this might turn out. I've seen pics of the match- physical clearance seems to be quite good. I'm interested in whether the riding characteristics change moving the bike from 700x28 to 650bx42? And positively or negatively? On Tuesday, October 30, 2012 5:48:33 PM UTC-4, ttoshi wrote: I'm thinking about a potential 650b Ram with 42mm Hetres. What a great group with great advice! The only minor drawback is that there may not be as much clearance when the brakes are opened, so I may have to deflate the tires to make it through the calipers... OK, so the test ride, wow is all I have to say! Within 10 feet of riding the Ram with Hetres, I knew I had a keeper. The bike feels so stable. It inspires tremendous confidence. The Tektro brake pads, though, lousy. I swapped back to the kool-stop salmon I used previously--much better! I had no issues with the BB height. I did a curvy descent (Shepherd Canyon for the locals). The bike was so stable and the traction felt so good, that I was extremely confident in my descent. The bike felt fast, and the tires were so stable. I'll take some pics tomorrow to show the tire clearance and my current setup (although I plan to add a front rack and fenders soon.) My feeling is that the conversion is a huge success. I would highly recommend it for others who may be wondering. [RBW] Re: Imperial vs. B17 for upright riding. Which has more cush?
Never tried an Imperial, but when I swapped Moustache bars (level with saddle) with Albatross bars (inch or so above saddle) on a bike with a Selle Anatomica saddle featuring similar cutout, the only way I could mitigate sliding forward on the SA was to tilt the nose up a... lot. Like, 10 degrees. Even then, I had to play around with finding a sweet spot where I wasn't then sliding off the *back* of the saddle. Tensioning was no help, either. Swapped the Selle Anatomica for a B17 and I only had to tilt the nose up maybe a degree or three to stay put. The hammock-y effect of the SA's cutout certainly added more bouncy give on each pedal stroke, which is all fine and good when your crotch wants to be right over it with bars level or lower than saddle, but not so great when you're wanting to be perched back a further. Worth pointing out that the SA's leather was not quite as thick nor firm as the B17, even with the laminate underlay, but I didn't really find one to be cushier than the other, just that the B17 seemed more appropriate and comfortable for the setup. Hope this helps. Jeff Hagedorn Warragul, VIC Australia -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Anyone oil and beeswax cork grips?
While I've never tried beeswax, oil or similar, I also dislike the hard, slick results that three or more fresh coats of shellac produce, so here's my solution. Try brushing on a coat of shellac, let it dry fully (doesn't take long), then knock it back with a rag soaked in denatured alcohol. Repeat once or twice more. What you end up with is a shellacked cork grip which feels like it has seen regular use for a year or so, i.e. still tactile, not as spongy as raw cork, but not as slick and hard as the full treatment. A nice happy medium, especially if you ride gloveless. Jeff Hagedorn Warragul, VIC Australia -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. They have a pretty good grip if you don't put anything at all on them. Have you ridden with them? What's this about oak platform pedals? Do you ride barefoot? [RBW] Little/Big Ben versus Dureme
I've got a set of 40mm Duremes and for the most part I like them but the one complaint I have is that the soft rubber tread feels a bit mushy in sharp turns. I've always wanted to try Big Apples but I don't think I have enough clearance so now I'm interested in the Little Bens. Has anyone ridden both the Dureme and one of the Bens? How would you compare them overall as far as rolling resistance, comfort, cornering, etc... Thanks! Truly, I don't consider training for running, cycling or skiing any different than practicing the instruments I play - I simply do exercises that help me reach my potential within the time constraints my life will allow. I just do stuff that will hopefully make me better at what I like doing. Participation in sport is another reason I train. I'm not competitive by nature, but I love sport. It's fun and full of emotion, which makes it a source of motivation for me. which lends consistency to my life ...and it's amazing how far we can get with consistency. do something daily for a few years and wow. participation also gets me more involved in my community - i live in a very active town where people are outside doing stuff all the time. my city hosts a marathon, a cycling stage race, triathlon nationals. we have a big 'ole lake and some mountains to play in. being a part of that community brings all kinds of positive reinforcement. and then there are the upsides of training, like good health and fitness. and being able to share fun experiences with family and friends. and reduced stress. and I sleep very well. there's a spiritual component to a good long ride or run too - i appreciate the time i get to reflect when training and never take that for granted. training and just riding are pretty much the same for me. a couple times a week, it's not just riding. but that's fine too. [RBW] Re: Tips for Removing Cork Grips?
For budgetary reasons, I won't be now. But all this got me thinking about how to rework my Albatross bars a wee bit to create more room between my hands and the gear levers (MTB style on the bars) -- the primary reason for shifting to the Bosco bars, which have more room on the upper/back hand position. I'll test on a longer ride and see how it goes, but my short ride test was promising. I removed the cloth tape in the far forward hand position (which I don't use much), thus freeing up room to slide the gear levers forward, freeing up room for my hands at the top of the cork grips. I just installed a pair of 50mm Big Bens on my Hunqapillar, which I had been riding with 50mm Duremes. While I didn't do a side by side comparison, I have to report that I'm very highly impressed with the BBs and they're staying on the Hunqapillar. They feel super plush and cushy, especially over ruts and other irregularities to the point of providing a close feel to a bike with suspension. They grip very well on dry dirt and pavement and provide. As far as I could tell, a close feel to what the Betty with the Hetres has. I can't say that I'm a super picky or sensitive feeler when it comes to tires, but these are tires to keep. [RBW] Lightest, fastest, comfortablest 622 tires in the 37 to 45 mm range?
I know this list is the hotspot for fat-tired-ness. Close to building up the Ram, which will take over some grocery and errand riding from the Fargo, I plan to steal the very, very nice Kojaks from the Fargo to install on the Ram. (STILL waiting for a wheelset -- brother has inched one closer to ABQ, but it's still 100 miles away in Crownpoint, NM.) That leaves the skinny wheelset for the Fargo needing tires: Rhyno Lite 27 mm wide rims. No point in putting skinny 35s back on it; might was well put on something fattter. But not too fat: after all, I have the SnoCat SL/60mm Big Apple Liteskin set, too. So: for a change of pace for the Fargo, for 80% pavement, with a bias toward light, fast, cushy and a bias against sturdy, long-lasting, flat-resistant: what is out there, what do you recommend, and why? I know about the 37 mm Paselas (no Tourguards) and those are on my short list, but I'd like to learn of others. Gracias. [RBW] Re: Swapping Bars Threaded Stems
I use the VO stem adapter on one bike and like it . I think it's a grand invention ! I don't mind the look of using the adapter with a threadless stem at all , it's simply different. The flexibility of using the adapter and being able to swap out lengths is AWESOME !! To me, the days of using the traditional stem are gone , I wasn't ever fond of the inflexibility of the whole idea anyways, that to change anything you had to unwrap the bars and get a whole new stem . I bought a cool looking NOS Koski stem on ebay to go with it :) Yes, Nitto makes a number of stem adapters, but the tallest one (MTC-12) offers 20mm less height than the VO, according to specs. http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_infoproducts_id=601zenid=e04de8648f08dc25ab43ebfafbbc3e04 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] About a one week report on the new Hillborne
Big week for me and the bike, as I finally took the studded tires off on Wednesday. Did the first commute yesterday and got out today for a 30 mile ramble. Been dialing in a few things and swapping out a part here and there. Most fun was putting an old Sackville mudflap on the back fender ala Jared in one of the new Bikes of the Month at Rivendell. The main thing I've noticed is - nothing. Can't really tell if the second top tubes adds anything or not. If so, it too subtle for me to notice. At least yet. The 60cm frame definitely fits me better than the old 56. That's probably a bigger difference than any extra tube. The fancier lugs are really nice. As is the present paint scheme. Very detailed for an inexpensive Rivendell. Still getting used to sidepull brakes. This is the first bike I've had since high school with these things. They're working fine even wet and with all the puddles I went through today they were plenty wet. Do have the Marathon Racers on the bike now. Will be swapping out to Baby Big Bens in the real near future. In part because the Racers are getting worn. At least for me, they wear down faster than other Schwalbe tires. Personally like them more than the Marathon Supremes. [RBW] Pasadena Ramble.
Had a 70th birthday party to attend so my friend John and I decided to make it a ramble. I road up out of Sunland, and dropped down into La Crescenta via Lowell to Honolulu to Crescenta Valley Park where I met John, from there we rode through Montrose up Verdugo and down Descanso Drive to Woodbury to East Pasadena. Lots of Beautiful homes, and the party was great! Good people and food. The ride home was pretty much the reverse route except I left John and made the climb backup to Lowell and then it was all down hill cruising at 32mph with the Hetres. [RBW] Re: About a one week report on the new Hillborne
Great, Eric! Isn't the point of the second top tube or diagnitube that you don't notice it? What it adds is strength and stiffness to a larger frame, so it's what your not noticing that you're noticing: flex. So it seems a good thing to not be noticing a difference on a bigger frame. Grin. [RBW] First Riv Ride
On a spectacular day here in south Florida, I enjoyed an excellent afternoon, thanks to Frank Neff (of this board), who dropped by with his Saluki (Albatross bars 650b wheels) and his Riv custom (Nitto Noodles 700c) so that I could get some feel for a couple of these bikes. We tooled around the area of suburban streets and the nearby U of Miami campus for over an hour . . . I had no doubts about my recent purchase of a Sam frame, but now I have a little experience under that impression, based on two different bikes and bars. As we are about the same size, no adjustments were necessary moving between the two bikes. All I can say is, Wow! The Saluki felt all-day comfortable, right off (I think the saddle was a B68, very nice in the upright riding position), and the Riv custom, with a B17 and the Noodles . . . felt like it was made for me (sorry, Frank). The shifting on both bikes was nearly effortless; I had brought along old memories of friction shifters of less-than-Campy quality, and the silver shifters on both bikes dispelled those thoughts immediately, making shifts as easily as anything indexed; in fact, with more pleasure. I already understood why some of us end up owning several bikes; now I understand why some readers wind up with a roomful of Rivs. Many thanks, Frank! --Tom -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Ok, now it is all finished, and elegantized. I polished the tongue and filed the top buckle mount down to an asthetic shape and painted it black. Here's the finished basket: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fireman483/8603662517/in/photostream/ 3 photos, click to newer. It was simple to do, as long as you understand what is needed to make the cam over hasp function. So my requirements were: Instant on/off, secure, elegant, lockable to the bike and not too heavy. All was achieved but the elegance. Not ugly, but I need to paint the silver bits...lol. I run panniers and a rear rack regularly. The basket is used as an additional overload for *planned* shopping trips. Check out the photos and descriptions. Re: [RBW] Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar
Finished! This morning I finished detailing the Hunqapillar. http://tinyurl.com/dyoaomp Changes made after riding it for a week: - Changed to a 13cm stem. - Changed brake levers to Paul's polished reverse brake levers. They work much better than the Tektros and don't have that squishy feeling. - Changed to a green Brooks B17 I had lying around, and used Brooks green leather tape. This bike has an amazing ride, especially with some weight on the front panniers. René On Sun, Mar 24, 2013 at 10:56 PM, René Sterental orthie...@gmail.comwrote: Thanks Brian! I spent a long time deciding on the color scheme, particularly debating between pewter and silver. Pewter ultimately won and I'm so glad I chose it. Rick Stefani at DD did the paint job. He's local and Keven sent me there. He paints a lot of the Rivendell frames. I do like the downtube shifters but after I fine tune the fit of the 55 Bosco on the 120mm Tallux stem, I'll see if there is space for the shifters on the stem's quill. I have them like that on the Betty and love them. They didn't fit with the Bullmoose Bosco, but they may fit on the regular. The reverse levers are great, but the Tektro 4.1 seem provide a braking feel that is too flexy. On the Betty, with the front Paul Racer and the rear Silver, they cannot lock the wheels on a steep downhill. The braking seems to be a bit better on the Hunqapillar with the Neo-Retro/Touring brakes, but I ordered a set of Paul's reverse brake levers that can be configured to work both with long and short pull brakes. I have a strong feeling, from the time I tried their regular levers, that they'll be much better than the Tektros. The Tektros work well on flat commutes and regular street riding, but I want to make sure I have brakes when I need them, and not that I'll be pressing the levers like crazy while my tires slow and then stop... or don't. Are you OK with the shifters wayyy down there? I was trying to figure out the best shifting setup on Bosco's and I think thumbies near the stem are the closest, but I do like having the full bars available. I may have to try the reverse levers. Pictures to prove it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/ Afterwards, I took the bike on its maiden ride to test everything around the paths in Stanford University and stopped for a beautiful sunset moment in the garden outside the Rodin museum. I did several updates to this build: - Went with a 175mm 26/40 Sugino crankset, but will likely replace with a 172.5mm 24/38 I just converted. I've had some hip issues and seem to handle the 172.5mm better, although the Betty has the 175 and I've been doing fine with it. Go figure. Maybe the repeated attempts to stay on the Low Carb/High Fat diet with progressively shorter relapse intervals is working... The 24 will definitely help me in the climbs, at least until I lose significant weight, and for the same reason, the 38 may be a bit more friendly on the flats, especially when riding loaded or on a headwind. - Went with the 55cm steel Bosco handlebar instead of the previous 58cm Bullmoose Bosco. While the Bullmoose is awesome and very stiff, after riding it for a while before the repaint, it seemed a bit too wide. Riding the much narrower GB Promenade handlebar on the Betty has made me realize I prefer narrower handlebars than what I used to ride. While the Promenade may be too narrow for the Hunqapillar, especially off-road, the 55cm Bosco seems like a perfect middle ground. I've also noticed than as I've started riding narrower handlebars, my shoulder and neck pain have also significantly improved. Even when riding the GB Randonneur bars on the Atlantis with their more forward position. Another improvement I chose is to use reverse brake levers in order to get the full smooth sections of the Bosco bar while improving the hand positions that still allow me access to the brakes. I currently have a set of Tektro 4.1 reverse levers, but will try a set of Paul's reverse brake levers as they provide more versatility. The Tektro reverse brake levers also seem to provide a very flexy braking experience, so I want to see if the Pauls work better. - After much thought, I decided to not mount the Pass Stow rack that I had before and instead, mount the Nitto Mini + Tubus Nova that I first used on my Bombadil. I'm still keeping the Pass Stow rack and may install it again, but I didn't like the Porteur

David it is! As you know:) The bicycle enables me to see the world outside of the bubble When I was a kid it was what I always gravitated to for fun. Lots of Beautiful homes, and the party was great! Good people and food. The ride home was pretty much the reverse route except I left John and made the climb backup to Lowell and then it was all down hill cruising at 32mph with the Hetres. Re: [RBW] Re: A Little dirt riding on a Friday report.
Wouldn't miss it. You'll be able to ride to the Ocean. Figure I'll park and ride the LA River trail into downtown and then on to the West Side. [RBW] Re: Pics of you on your Rivendell.
Oli, those are fantastic photographs throughout your entire photostream! And that one of you on the go fast bike ... that's exactly what I like to see. As they say, a picture's worth a thousand words. All this talk lately about handlebars could be greatly enhanced with pictures like this of rider in motion. Without a pic you really don't know if the person suggesting a particular bar is older/younger, slimmer/fatter, etc..
