Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?

2013-04-11 Thread Matt Beebe
If you like lugged steel bikes with traditional geometries, you just can't
find a new bike in the $500 price range that compares to the golden age
70's and 80's (and early 90's bridgestone) bikes out there. There were
some seriously high quality steel frames made back then.I have a few
vintage bikes in my stable, and it sometimes amazes me that they were at
one time, in my lifetime, standard fare at the bike shop.

I agree that you don't want to spend a lot on a rig in need of major TLC,
but there are tons of 20+ year old bikes that have pretty much never been
ridden. One of my best bikes is one that was made in 1983 that I picked
up several years ago, and which has served me well for those years and tens
of thousands of miles of transport. Now, it only fits 28's with fenders-
but has similar geometry to a Rivendell, rack and fender mounts, high
quality steel, unbelievably nice shaped and filed lugs, and terrific ride
characteristics and comfort. I love riding that bike, and in about a half
hour will begin putting another 30 miles on it.

BUT I also wholeheartedly agree with EricP. If you want a 700c bike
with better tire/fender clearances (larger than 28s)- and this is a
fundamentally important feature to those who are accustomed to larger
tires- vintage is definitely not where to look (unless it's an early
Rivendell Allrounder or something unusual).

Re: [RBW] Re: Little Big Ben first impressions

2013-04-11 Thread Eric Platt
Decided to quickly measure my Baby Bens. They seem to be sitting between
36 and 37mm on Salsa Delgado rims. Our weather has been cool and it has
been only five days. Do expect that in another few weeks they will relax
out to 38 or so.

Have noticed that so far, these tires are more U shaped on the Salsa rims.
Rather than a full, round C shape that the Racers were.

Still like the tires. They increase my confidence in riding the loose junk
at the side of the road, aka spring road conditions in Minnesota.

 38.5 there.

To note, I recently switched to the lil' ben's from a set of 700x45 Resist
Nomads, that measured in around 42mm on the same rims. The lil' ben's are
nice, though I only have about 50 miles on them so I can't give a full
review yet, but man, I have to say, those Resist Nomad's have got to be the
best bang for the buck tire I've ridden in a long time. Sure the extra
volume helps, so it's not fair to compare the two tires to each other, but
it has me wishing there was a size between the big ben and lil' ben so I
could fit them with fenders on most any of my rides. I'm going to give the
lil' ben's a fair chance for sure, but I miss the plush ride the Nomads
 gave.

They are definitely heavier than the Marathon Racers they replaced. Didn't
notice then being any slower. Could be that I'm not fast in the first
place. Didn't do any non-paved riding as it has been too wet. Was able to
ride with confience on the sides of the road where there is a lot of
gravel, sand and other detrius leftover from the winter. Quite a bit more
 confidence inspiring than the Racers.

Again, it's only one ride, and other folks may have entirely different
impressions of the tires. But I like 'em.

It's made of steel and its price list is $600. It's the only steel bike in

Re: [RBW] Re: Hetre gash: to replace or not replace?

2013-04-11 Thread Nick Payne
I was cycling with my brother in Switzerland a few years back, and he got a
cut in the side-wall of his tyre big enough for my little finger to fit
through. I asked if he had a banknote on him, and he produced a 200 franc
note, which I used to boot the tyre. We only re-inflated it to about 30 psi
as even with the boot, the cut was bulging a bit at that pressure. The
tyre lasted the rest of the day and quite a few more kilometres until we
got to a town with a bike shop, but he got a bit worried towards the end of
the day when I suggested that maybe the squirming around of the tyre due to
the low pressure was gradually wearing all the print off his banknote - 200
francs equates to about $215.

[RBW] New AHH build drivetrain problem

Submitted for your consideration: a crunchy drivetrain problem on my new
Hilsen build. I’m experiencing some auto-shifting and cog skipping when
going uphill, pedaling hard or pedaling out of the saddle. I’d appreciate
the group’s suggestions for a solution.

Frame: 65 AHH, Waterford, 135 spacing, 1 TT, new

Crank: Sugino XD2 road double 48-34

BB: Shimano UN-54, 110 mm

Shifters: Silvers on bar ends

RD: Shimano LX, low normal

Rims: Sun CR-18, 36 hole

Rear hub: Shimano 105, 130 spacing, a 1.5 mm spacer added to each side

Cassette: SRAM 8 speed, 11-32

Chain: SRAM 7-8 speed, new

Components not indicated as new have maybe 200 mi. of use on a previous
bike of mine.

Me: 6’3”, PBH 92, 265 lbs. What I’ve tried: Grease on BB cable guide,
tightening rear QR skewer more. No luck so far.

I get auto shifting on my new Sam in the same circumstances.

*I was told by Rivendell* that all you can really do is tighten the shifter
lever wingnut more to keep the derailleur from slipping out of alignment in
the rear.

I am not used to friction shifting.
I have found that it takes a very light touch, but I am not totally free
of auto shifts yet. I am getting better at it though.

[RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Could be worn cogs or chain rings, but unlikely with 200 miles (unless
using a worn out chain to begin with).

First, I'd check the chain (which OP noted as new)-- move the crank slowly
(when up on a repair stand or in reverse) to see if you have a tight link
or one that's bent. I had this problem late last year with a new chain. Too
bad I didn't have my chain tool with me at the time.

Re: [RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread René Sterental
I had the same problem on my Atlantis before I sent it to be repainted.
After it came back and I took it to my LBS to have the headset and BB
installed, my mechanic told me that the rear derailler hanger was a bit
bent, and he fixed it (being steel it's not a problem). After I rebuilt the
whole bike, the ghost shifting on climbs or under pressure completely
dissapeared.

I had no idea how mine got bent, but I'd suggest that is the first thing
you check no matter what parts you're runnning.

Measure the chainstay length. If it's similar or shorter than the Roadeo, you
almost certainly have the road standard. Given the sidepulls and year, that is
a strong possibility. The only model of that era was the road standard. If the
chainstays are longer, it would be a Longlow. But I'll have to look at my old
Readers to see if the Longlow was made yet in 1997. I'm pretty sure custom
geometry was not being done at that time.

Pre-custom days, the models were Road (standard), Allrounder (with cantis), the
rare Mountain frame, and then later the Longlow and the somewhat rare
Cyclocross model. Given this, chainstay length would be your identifier for
your sidepull frame.

[RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread Tom Harrop
This is one of those annoying things that seems to have a few possible
causes—I had the exact same problem with my Waterford Bombadil. In my case,
it was the plastic bottom bracket cable guide that was at fault. The one
that came on the bike new from Riv was black with only one mounting hole,
but other than that I don't know what sort it was. Not only did it not fit
on the bottom bracket properly, but it also forced the rear derailer cable
to make two nasty bends. It was such a terrible fit I actually thought it
might be on backwards (it wasn't). I chucked it out and replaced it with a
$2 Shimano one... problem gone.

that. It will never have a load, will never be taken off road. It's a fair

You guys always have such awesome stuff in your garages I though I'd check.

[RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread Will
I do not have that particular derailleur, but on several of the ones I do
have, there are 3 adjustment screws. 2 of them, control lateral movement
(from high stop to low stop), the 3rd screw however controls the spring
tension on the derailleur cage (which positions the jockey swing arm fore
and aft). If swing arm tension is too tight, the derailleur may self-shift,
if too loose, it skips. Swing arm tension may change when you move a used
RD to a new frame: the chainstay length changes and/or the
chainrings/cassette are different sizes than before. So what worked on the
old bike doesn't work as well on the new bike. It's good to adjust the
derailleur cage tension, if you can, to compensate for differences in drive
train length.

Down thread, I saw a suggestion to check the chain for stiff or bent links.
Very good advice. I'd also check the chain rings for a dinged tooth.
Sometimes you'll find nicks in the teeth. File them smooth. Same for the
jockey wheel teeth, check them too.

Finally, give the jockey wheel axles a shot of penetrating oil, be sure
they are running smoothly.

[RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Lots of good recommendations here. To troubleshoot, I would follow these
steps:

- Bike on stand, pedals backwards. If there is a stiff link, it will
obviously hang in the pulleys.
- Eyeball the chain from back/top - make sure there are no protruding pins.
- With no chain tension, grasp rear sprocket set and wiggle. There should
be no movement. Tighten lockring if movement. If lockring is tight, it
may be that the freehub has loosened. Typically, this needs to be
tightened into the hub itself when the axle is removed.
- With the rear wheel removed. Shift rear derailleur through it's range.
Put it into the highest tension setting (highest gear on most models) and
see if it moves without touching, then apply a little pressure with your
finger to the derailleur body to see if it moves. If so, increase tension
at the shifter body with the thumbscrew. Also, pay attention to the
movement of the cable as you shift up and down. There should be no hitches
or glitches. Often on a new bike setup, the cable housing tips are not
completely set, so there can be movement and shifting of the housing, which
causes cable movement and ghost shifting. There should be only the hint of
slack when at the lowest tension point - no drooping or sagging cable.
- Check axle on rear wheel for excessive play. Adjust cones to eliminate
or reduce.
- With chain not attached, check front chainrings for trueness - i.e.
lateral movement when you spin cranks. (Chainring bolts and improperly
torqued crankarm bolts can be culprit here.)

That ought to get 95% of the issues tracked down. Housing can definitely
be a culprit on barend shifter setups, as there are a few places for slack
to hide. And absolutely measure the chain - I've swapped chains around and
then reused the one I was going to trash.

Hope that helps.

[RBW] New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread bobish
I think this is a derailleur adjustment issue. A prickly little problem because
it's hard to recreate consistantly on the road--never mind on the work stand.
Assuming no hanger alignment issues, a very minor quarter or half turn of the
cable barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur will likely fix it. Problem is,
which way to turn? Try and figure out (when next it happens) what cog you've
selected with your shifter vs. where the chain wants to go to (the next larger
or next smaller cog). If it wants to to the next larger, you need a bit more
cable slack. If next smaller, a bit more tension. I don't usually run across
this on my 8 speed cassettes but do so often on my 9 speed new installs until I
iron it out. I set a side a short ride with some hills for this and just nail
it down once and for all.

I also have a VO porteur rack I just bought, super clean. Asking $150

[RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread ascpgh
I have experienced similar experiences after replenishing drivetrain
consumables (chain, cogs, rings) and cables, which cause me to readjust
derailleurs/shifters. For sure a fresh drivetrain is touchier about chain
line until the teeth are burnished by the chain and have more surfaces that
may pluck at the passing chain instead of moving together smoothly.

I have experienced some riding which deflects the bottom bracket of the
frame laterally like low RPM mashing, steepest climbs, heavy or strong
riders, can deflect the route of the rear derailleur cable and functionally
changing its tension, inducing momentary out of adjustment sensations. The
terrain I rode when spending lots of time off road (took a very surprised
Bridgestone rep Chris Watson out on the trails for an informational ride)
and the series of mountain bikes I had produced varied degrees of this
effect. Had to sell my MB-0 within six months because it flexed so much in
my size I knew I would kill it if I continued to riding in that terrain, in
that manner. At least it had a cyclic flex limiter; the back wheel. On many
climbs I would alternate chainstay rubbing, left side, right side,
continuously unless I changed gear or was able to more effectively spin a
gear to deemphasize the 9 and 3 power surge of pedal mashing. Clipless
pedals helped turn smoother circles with fewer power surges. Did find that
Suntour drivetrains were less susceptible to the effect than Shimano. the
latter seemed particularly sensitive to being perfectly adjusted.

I will measure it when I get home from work, James. I'm pretty sure it's a

I've transferred over my seat and pedals from my main road Trek. This bike
is set up kinda interesting. It has sealed Phil Wood hubs, Campy crank and
derailleurs, and 105 brakes. Yet cheap Kenda tires (for now). I'm gonna
ditch the yellow bar tape and bottle cages (wtf?) and probly replace with
creamy white to match the head tube. Or maybe a blue, for the all-american
look. It has plenty of scuffs and small scratches on the paint, as to be
expected from a well-ridden bike.

Like I said, I need a sunny day to put some miles on it. But if it works
out as well as I hope, I'll ride the hell out of it. I'm doing my first

[RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem

2013-04-11 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Actually, that really should not change a thing in this case. That
specific adjustment is really to tune an indexed shifting setup. You will
adjust cable tension, but since the indexing is really done at the lever,
it is not a constant.

The core issue with modern drivetrains is that they are designed to shift
under load with minimal input from the rider. All those ramps and cutouts
and nooks and crannies in the sprocket set has been added to get that chain
to easily lift off and move. Add to that the floating upper pulley and you
have gearing that wants to jump. If you listened to a little too much
rock 'n roll, and have trouble hearing a slight chatter of chain, you can
happily ride along not realizing you are really on the edge of a new gear
ratio.

That is one thing that the older freewheel setups (not to mention fewer
gears and hence a wider sweet spot) did reasonably well - let you know
when you weren't in gear.

I get spoiled by fixed gears and singlespeeds. High teeth and no ramps
means when you apply power, that chain is only going to make things roll.
My Hilsen cogset is wearing out, and though it can be nursed through a
ride, there are a couple gear combos which simply slip now. It makes me
not want to ride it. (But, I'll swap in a new set of sprockets and chain
and appreciate it again real soon...)

It does make me wish someone would come out with a KlunkyShift™ sprocket
set. Big, tall, straight teeth with no cuts or ramps. Probably findable
if I shift back to freewheels, but I do like the wider bearing stance of a
freehub. Crikey. I want steel cranks and sprockets which are hard to
shift... ;^)

fix it. Problem is, which way to turn? Try and figure out (when next it
happens) what cog you've selected with your shifter vs. where the chain
wants to go to (the next larger or next smaller cog). If it wants to to the
next larger, you need a bit more cable slack. If next smaller, a bit more
tension. I don't usually run across this on my 8 speed cassettes but do so
often on my 9 speed new installs until I iron it out. I set a side a short
ride with some hills for this and just nail it down once and for all.

As it turns out, when I removed the wheel and examined the cluster there was a

Who is doing the buying and setup? Stevie's, where I have just started
working, has that Nishiki Mixte, tuned, for $180 plus tax -- just one
example. I've bought very nice schlep around bikes -- Raleigh Sportses,
Schwinn Collegiates, Surburbans, and ilk, Nishiki mixte, etc, etc, etc,
from Goodwill, all in good condition, all for under $60 (an some for
$24.95) and, even if needing some work, easily tuned and lubed and adjusted
by even a semi-competent mechanic.

It all depends on the selection available and who is buying and
refurbishing.

That said, there are all sorts of nice off-the-shelf basic bikes.

I admit to harboring a stereotype that this young woman just wants a
comfortable, reliable bike to ride, and does not care to get into a project
refurbing an obscure antique. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I realize that some used bikes are a good deal, and need little or no TLC to be
a good rider. But it takes some skill to identify these. And even if you only
find high quality used bikes on your local CL, it's easy to feel pressured to
buy one that isn't ideal. At a bigger shop, at least a customer could try
several bikes side by side. Plus, there's a warranty, maybe a deal on
accessories, etc.

Re: [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-11 Thread Peter Morgano
Well while I doubt she wants to rebuild the SA hub on a Raleigh Sprite
there are many levels of used bikes. I got a late 90s motobecane about 10
years ago that someone had traded in for their new ride. LBS gave it a good
tune up and said it had something like a 30 day warranty to see if anything
went major wrong. I rode it for a long time and it was a sweet ride, so
sweet someone else really liked and stole it... :( I believe I paid $175,
spent 40 on a decent seat and 20 on some new brake pads, so $200ish for a
bike I never would have been able to afford in the late 90s new.

[RBW] New Bike Fitting System

2013-04-11 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Any fit based on measurements, whether with a tape measure or a body scanner
with laser beams, is merely a starting point, since no two humans are alike.

But the market for this kind of service is the elite cyclist. By elite, I
mean spends a fortune. If one of these dudes is buying a $15k bike, and wears
$2k worth of clothing to ride it, then why not have a status symbol fit?

Re: [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-11 Thread oldmangabe
I agree with Jim's POV completely, and not becuase I work at a shop. For
someone looking to gain access to cycling or riding a bike on a regular
basis, getting a decent new bike (if it fits their budget) is usually the
best overall value for that person. With new bikes, one gets all new
compnents, a service warranty, and usually a good deal on accessories at
the POP. One also gets to ride various sizes and models and choose their
favorite in their timeframe and comfort level (assuming the shop is not
overly pushy).

With used bikes, you get used components with typically unknown history and
reliability. Sure, if the person buying the used bike is mechanically
inclined, or has easy access to services/knowlege, time, extra money, or
prior cycling experience to choose, repair, and service a used bike, then
it could be a good value. From my experience it is not a good value
monetarily or time wise for someone to invest in a non bikeshop,
overhauled, used bike for their first bike. It will usually turn into a
money/time pit, and generally deter someone from riding by bumming them
out. I've seen it happen time and again. Used bikes can be a good choice
for people who are already invested in bikes, cycling, tinkering, etc.

I second the vote for the Jamis Coda Sport. Lots of sizes, steel,
versatile, reliable durable components, and generally fits the proposed
budget. A very good value overall IMHO.

Though ultimately, it is up to Dustin's sister to choose the bike that is
right for her needs and goals.

I don't even think that counts as a stereotype. Some of the people on this
list love tinkering with their bikes. That's fine, but it's not even
representative of people who already love and ride bikes, let alone a new
rider who, probably, just wants to ride. Maybe Dustin loves tinkering and
will help his little sis out, but otherwise, I too think she should go to a
bike shop-- perhaps with her brother to help her in case she ends up at a
shop that wants to push her toward whatever the racers are riding
nowadays-- and test ride some bikes.
