[RBW] Re: Geared bike, most like Simple One?
There's no reason you couldn't use your Atlantis for that. It sounds like you are really looking for similar position more than a frame spec, and there's nothing about the Atlantis that would prevent that. Going way back to the early printed flyers for the Atlantis, page 2 shows what I think you are talking about: http://cyclofiend.com/rbw/atlantis/atlflyer/02.html The other difference would be wheel size, as I assume you are running a 26/559. But, especially if you are going to end up carrying 1.5X amount of gear, you probably want the stouter frame of the Atlantis. If you are needing a third Rivendell, then the Hunqapillar is worth a ride. - Jim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology
Y'know what I'd love to see? Non-ramped rear sprockets. Just like on the old freewheels we used to get, but set on a carrier so they would fit on current freehubs. Steel? Sure, if that is easier, but aluminum is fine if the teeth were longer. 8 sprockets or even 9, so the size would be right. Really, I'm talking about the KlunkyShift™ cassette I mentioned in the AHH drivetrain thread. If we're using a manual shifting setup, there's no reason why we need index-compatible sprockets. But, I'm not real keen on going back to the narrow bearing spacing from the freewheel days. (Bent waaay too many axles back then.) Ok... clearly I'm an outlier. - Jim / cyclofiend.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Geared bike, most like Simple One?
559's are a great size for touring. However, if you are particularly happy with the Simple One, it would be worth considering building up another with the Rohloff. This Quickbeam belongs to Alex Wetmore http://www.phred.org/~alex/pictures/bikes/quickbeam/rohloff/ That is almost a perfect a perfect bicycle. Of course, finding another Simple One might present a challenge. On Sunday, April 14, 2013 10:30:49 PM UTC-6, allenmichael wrote: I have a 56 Atlantis and a 58 Simple One. Can anyone suggest what Rivendell with gears will come closest to the Simple One and permit me (160 lbs) to carry a good deal of weight on occasion)? I have the Simple One set up with Dove bars and a 7 or 8 mm stem, large saddlesack in the rear and a Riv High-Rider front rack with a basket in front. I ride this most days on a 6-7 mile ride each way across San Francisco from the ocean to near downtown. I've tried the Atlantis with Noodles and a flat bar (Nitto Torsion); I haven't yet tried it with Albatross bars or a Bosco, but I do own one of each, and this will probably be my next experiment. Re: [RBW] Geared bike, most like Simple One?
Yes. That easy. :) Atlantis is the bike for the job. Put something upright on it and get the position you want. Another route, if you are married to the idea of drop bars is to install them on a nitto dirt drop stem and get them high above the saddle. [RBW] Re: Geared bike, most like Simple One?
I don't know this from personal experience, but my understanding is that the Quickbeam/SimpleOne bikes are more like the Rom/Ram/Roadeo lightish-tubing/steeper-angles road bikes, and the Atlantis is a stouter touring bike. The fact that you own both and are leaning towards another Riv tells me you've noticed this. I suspect you would be happy with the ride and carrying capacity of an AHH. Re: [RBW] New Bike Fitting System
As someone who a bit over a year ago was returning to the cycling world after over a decade away, I was aware of how poor fit was. I'd tried to be fit at an LBS. Failure. Then I bumbled into Grant's site and was blown away by the simplicity and confidence. One measurement and we will fit you. Period. In talking with him, he also suggested I go up a size for my Hunqa. [RBW] Re: New AHH build drivetrain problem
Just to clarify my earlier comment: There's wiggle which is pretty minor, and most moving parts have some. Okay, that must be what I'm detecting. Thanks for all the suggested solutions, and thanks to the op for asking the question in the first place. I'm going to work my way through the suggestions offered in this thread to see if I can make my Riv enjoyable to ride again. I replaced the cassette and chain at the end of last season, but that didn't stop the ghost shifting. So I'll try replacing all the chain rings and see if that solves the problem. Then I'll have to see about overhauling my XT rear hub. I've never done any hub work, and similar to the op hubs seem scary to me, but I guess I need to get over it and get some tools and get to work. Another data point for the op: I tried the Silver shifters, but I couldn't get them to work. Although the shifters felt silky smooth, they slipped like crazy. I even got some of the recommended beeswax, but that didn't help at all, so I put some indexed Shimano Dura Ace bar end shifters back on. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Not to be that guy but this is why I went to IGH and single speeds about 10 years ago. Yes it is heavier and less gears but once it is set up there is no ghost shifting, crunching, mis-matched gears or anything like that. Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology
The bearings spacing on most cassette hubs is no different from that of a freewheel hub. With the exception of Shimano and Mavic and a few small makers, all freehubs have the hub bearings under the flanges, more or less. As long as the axle is properly designed, that is not a problem. The problem with most freewheel hubs were the thin axles. They were designed for 4-speed and 115 mm spacing. With that short overhang, no problem. Then they added another 5 mm on the drive-side for 5-speed, and it was getting marginal. Then they added another 6 mm to use 6-speed, and the design no longer worked. They now had more than twice the lever as before, yet kept the diameter of the axle the same. It's surprising that it worked as well as it did! Adding grooves in the axle on both sides made the problem worse. (Who needs to adjust their hub on both sides? Maxi put the grooves on the non-drive side only, so you adjusted only that side.) There are plenty of freewheel hubs that don't break axles. Don't conclude from a poor execution that the entire concept is flawed. Cassette hubs have their own design problems. The biggest one is that the bearings under the cassette have to be relatively small. +1. I'd suspect that precisely the characteristics that give the SO/QB their qualities will make them a poor tourer. Secondy, the Atlantis is widely considered one of the nicest loaded-touring frames ever. If I already had an Atlantis I can't imagine I'd be looking for a different bike to go touring with! However, if it really is all about fit, and not some much about ineffable ride qualities then you should be able to get your Atlantis to match your SO fit prety closely. AS others point out, if it really just a comfort/fit issue, then get the atlantis setup with similiar riding position. The ineffable qualities will not be the same because the SO is setup for single-speed which for the most part (except for the few nutsos out there) is not setup for touring. I have both a QB and SH, and the QB is more comfortable, but that's comparing Albas to Noodles, and the SH is setup with touring racks, fenders etc, so it's going to be a different experience before i leave the house. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: brakes for newer Hillborne frames
I've run both DC 750 centerpulls and Silver sidepulls on my Sam. Both work great. Just depends on your preference. Obviously to use center-pulls you need to to add cable hangers front and rear. Front is a standard piece. I used the Nitto keychain hanger from Riv in the back and it worked well. As Charlie said, in order to get the big tire/fender clearance you can't really use anything shorter. -Pete in CT On Sunday, April 14, 2013 3:16:25 PM UTC-4, Forrest wrote: I'm looking at the 56 cm blue single-top-tube Sam frames on the RBW site and wondering which brakes they take. [RBW] Another question on shrinking wool: ss jersey
I have a Nike jersey that fits fine in width but is too long -- the rear pockets are down level with my pants' hip pockets. Any suggestions more particularly for shrinking a jersey in length by about 10-12% while keeping the width more or less the same? -- it is loose enough that a little shrinkage there is fine. It is short-sleeved, so I am not worried about sleeve shrinkage. This is not a prized jersey, so I am willing to take some risk, but I don't want to attempt anything if it is guaranteed to leave me with a tiny, matted mass of wool. [RBW] Delaware Water Gap Adventure photos etc
Here's a link so you can get a taste of what it was like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30856149@N04/sets/72157633254777022/We met on a chilly morning (low 40's at the start), 11 riders, 9 Rivs: Bleriot,AtlantisA Homer Hilsens - 2Sam HillborneAll-RounderBombadils - 3Kelly BedfordKogswellWe rode about 45 miles each day, and it was about as scenic as you could ask for on a ride. Streams, forest, mountains, some dirt and gravel, waterfalls, low traffic, old country towns with historic (or historic-looking) buildings. And lots of climbing! And wonderful companions. We left the parking lot in Columbia NJ, and after a few miles into theWorthington State Forestfor a few miles and then into the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. We rode for miles along the Delaware River on the Old MIne Road, said to be the oldest paved road in the U.S. Then for more adventure, we turned onto dirt/gravel Mountain Rd up to Buttermilk Falls. We continued from there with Pocono Mountains to our west and eventually came out on pavement and then into Milford, PA. Neat old houses, hotels - and after allotting 30 minutes to clean up (because cleaning up was not a priority), we regrouped to ride to beer at the Dimmick Inn (where we also ate dinner). Great breakfast at the Milford Diner (where we all bought carryout lunch sandwiches) and then off for the next phase of the adventure: riding in the Stokes Forest. Beautiful scenic woods, streams -- and much climbing. Bobby said that we should ignore the one-way road signs, there wouldn't be much traffic. Reward: gorgeous view from top of Sunrise Mountain. On to lunch at Swartswood State Park. Then onto a dead end road to lead to the Paulinskill Trail - Bobby said we should ignore the road closed sign - it didn't apply to us. We eventually got to the Paulinskill Trail - the only dirt section for today. We rode along the Paulinskill River for miles - again very scenic. This was a terrific ride, Bobby did a super job of organizing. Enjoy, Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Good catch... I, Smitty, wrote: *I also have a black Tubus Cargo... the silver one Rene is selling. The Tubus Cargo is an excellent design that uses proven structural features to ensure strength. * I shouldn't have said that the Tubus was somehow a less robust rack. It's not. I suppose I said that referencing the triangles on the Nitto BBR, but the Tubus Cargo has an additional set of vertical stays that go from the drop-out attachment up to one of the cross members at the platform and it adds an element of side-to-side triangulation. FWIW... I bought the Tubus in response to using the Nitto and wanting a few things different. Regarding why I buy pricey racks... I like that they're steel and I think that they (particularly Nitto and Tubus) look well constructed. I also have a Surly Big Front rack on my Big Dummy because it had a large platform for a basket, can take panniers, is compatible with disc brakes, has a front light mount, and did not attach via the wheel skewer. It was the cheapest rack I could find that met those criteria. The wife's commuter bike has a $30-ish aluminum blackburn rack that has been working perfectly fine for several years of 5-day/week commuting. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Tarptent advice?
Hey all. I am currently contemplating picking up a Tarptent to fill a need for a one person bike camping tent. I currently have the hennessy hammock, which is fantastic but dependent on trees, and a big/relatively heavy/substantial 3 person tent. I want to get something lightweight that I can use when I am going somewhere that I am not sure about setting up the hammock. I am big (6'3) and don't want any part of sleeping in open air/dealing with bugs, so would need to get one of the tarptents that actually closes up in order to be able to sleep at night. Looking at the tarptent site, it's tough to determine which of their options works best for what I am trying to do, so I figured I would ask you guys. Any thoughts on this? Anyone have a tarptent that they don't use/don't like and want to get rid of? Much obliged! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Tarptent advice?
Zack, My personal experience with tarp tents is they are too weight conscious at the expense of durability and protection from weather and bugs. As a family we use Hilleberg, and for solos I use their Akto. It is a wondrous 4-season tent that has withstood 100ËšF+ desert and high winds and snow and cold and everything in-between. It's a bit of extra weight vs. an ultralight tent (by a pound or two?) -- weight I gladly carry for the assurance of a bug free, dry, protected place to sleep no matter the situation. Plus it is ridiculously easy to set up completely dry inside even when raining. http://www.hilleberg.com/home/products/solo.php With abandon, Patrick On Monday, April 15, 2013 3:56:48 PM UTC-6, Zack wrote: Hey all. The wife and I used an Henry Shires Tarp Tent on our 05 PCT hike. We abandoned it after a couple hundred miles due to overcrowding. I forget the model name (it has it's own poles ie no hiking poles needed). It was labeled a 2-person. We joked that 1.5 would be more accurate. I continue to use it as a solo shelter and it's great. Have had it out in big winds, snow, and rain and lived to tell the tale.I'm 6'3 190lbs. Mine has a floor, full bug net w/ zippered door, and a beak (covered porch). I'm not really up to date on their current line up, but my Tarptent experience has been great. All that said... I prefer to sleep in my Hennessy Hammock. And in the NW finding trees is rarely a problem. FWIW... My fantasy shelter is a Warbonnet Hammock. --Smitty On Monday, April 15, 2013 2:56:48 PM UTC-7, Zack wrote: Hey all. If you want a fully-screened yet super light shelter, I'd go with a bivy sack or a lightweight tent. I have a Big Agnes tent that has held up pretty well for 5-6 years, and they make very light (2lbs) solo tents that aren't too pricey. Re: [RBW] Ram: loaded; Parigi-Roubaix tires; dt shifters: trade?
Will -- thanks for the info -- I'll do that, viz. just start high and let air out until things feel too soft, to determine the appropriate range. Goatheads: well, that's the penalty of using good tires. As I said earlier, I'd rather patch than ride Armadillos, say -- and even Armadillos won't stop goatheads. Odd, the 60 mm Big Apple Liteskins I use on the Fargo are, of all tires I've cared to ride -- for massively heavy (the lite model is 800 grams) the most flat resistant -- on dirt, they shrug off 9/10, on pavement, say 1/2. Usually run at absurdly low pressures, on- and off-road. At Stevie's bike shop, a regular treatment ($20/wheel) is to install excruciatingly heavy and stiff thorn proof tubes after inserting True Goo (a Slime clone) and using the old tubes, slit, as wrappers around the new ones. Even that, says Stevie, blocks only 3/4 thorns. And often, the tires in question have protective belts. Talk about wooden. Fortunately, most goathead punctures are slow leaks and, since my rides are short distances I generally find my punctures only after I get home. Still, I am very used to fixing flats on the go. Re: [RBW] best way to make sure brake levers are, well...level!
My fool-proof method: eyeball, tighten, install housing, tape bar, ride, discover that one is higher/lower than the other, curse, untape, re-cut housing, re-tape. Repeat as needed. Actually, that was my old method. My new method, born of desperation, is to measure the levers in various ways -- saddle nose to tip of lever, ground to tip of lever, center of stem clamp to tip of lever, the sit on bike and feel them -- until I am reasonably convinced tha they look and feel right, then install housing and tape. Funny: building the Ram -- freewheel, for once -- I took the bike, without thinking, out for a ride up and down my street to get a feel for the brake lever positions. Street is inclined. Cables not hooked up. Was surprised -- and lucky -- with the Fred Flinstone manoeuvre. [RBW] Re: Tarptent advice?
Zach, we use one of the larger Tarptents, (Rainbow?) Our use is mostly for canoe trips so we're not overly weight conscious. We have had very good luck with the tent. It is durable, waterproof, spacious. But, there is a learning curve in setting it up, because it must be taut to be watertight. Also, the poles they supply are way to flexible; you absolutely need a pair if treking poles to get this tent to work reliably. If you buy it plan on taking some time practicing in the back yard, but once you have mastered it, the tent goes up fast and secure. FWIW: Every camera I've ever used, has the shutter button on top on the right, where your right index finger would trigger it (unless it had a motor drive and multiple shutter buttons). Now, the iPhone is ubiquitous when it comes to photography. Initially, it was via the on-screen button that the picture was always taken; but much to my delight, they added the functionality of having the volume button double as a shutter button. Lay the phone sideways, horizontally, with the volume button where your right finger is on top, and click away. AND THEN THE PHOTOS ARE UPSIDE DOWN ON A PC! Looking at 'em on an iPhone or an iPad, and it knows to turn them over. But open them up on a PC, and they're upside-down. Apple's solution? Re: [RBW] OT-Cool Lugged bike for 7 year old (has to be girly)
How tall is she? I would think that would be the limiting factor. There are road racing bikes with 24 wheels, both new (mostly aluminum but even some cf) and vintage steel with lugs. I don't know how easy it would be to find a vintage one, but if you queried the Classics Rendezvous list, you'd probably turn up something. I think Joe Bunik on this list has one hanging in his garage, along with a bunch of other project frames that will probably never get built (just kidding Joe). My daughter studies French and wanted a French bike, so I found a lugged steel Peugeot mixte in purple. Polished it up, replaced the heavy steel 27 wheels with alloy 700's, replaced the junky Simplex with Shimano, added Nitto Dove bars, and voila, a classy purple get-around town bike. That was when she was about 11, and a bit under 5' tall. jim m wc ca On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 8:42 PM, Peter M uscpeter11...@gmail.com wrote: My daughter has all of a sudden taken an interest in my bike collection and keeps hollering at me to build her a cool bike. Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology
Thanks for bringing up those points, Jan - I'm not specifically against freewheels. My experience was that I regularly bent axles on my old mtb which had a freewheel and never had that problem with any freehubs. My recollection was that the mtb (which was a six speed 1983 drivetrain) had narrower cones than my XT and DuraAce freehubs. But again, no data to back that up. And I guess the point I was really trying to make stemmed from your comment about the loss of tooling, expertise and the necessary economies of scale involved in making a quality freewheel today. Since most of the bicycle market probably is less likely to support it, it seems freewheel production isn't likely to increase. But since there are plenty of freehubs around, why not continue to let them make the ratchety bits and focus on making something that is not designed to shift in a crosswind. Okay, that's overstating it, but it seems to me that creating a longer-toothed cassette of longer-wearing material might be a simpler option. I just recall walking into the old shops and looking at the cog board in the back. It seems like it should be comparatively easy to come up with a similar solution. Though I'm ignorant of any constraints which are in place for makers having to license the interface spline from Shimano. - Jim / cyclofiend.com On Monday, April 15, 2013 8:43:36 AM UTC-7, Jan Heine wrote: The bearings spacing on most cassette hubs is no different from that of a freewheel hub. [RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?
I rode my Alba-bar'd bike 40 miles on Saturday for the Manny in PDX Ride. I think the furthest I've ridden my Bosco'd bike in a day is 35 miles. I don't remember a time on either bike where I was wanting different bars. I imagine I could ride either bar further without issue. I think a bigger issue is having a saddle that's appropriate for the riding position. My Homer has Noodles. I like the variety between the set ups. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?
Hello, My Name is Mike, and Im an all Upright rider. I have 4 bikes. 2 with Albas, 1 with Boscos and 1 with the Sycip Wonder Bar. Ive gone 80 miles on Albas a few times, and Im gonna tour with them this summer on my Atlantis. I dont find they hinder me at all when riding distance, actually they definitely help. Never been more comfortable, but everyones different. -Mike On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 10:36 AM, marktain...@gmail.com wrote: I've just recently ordered a new single top tube Sam that Jim Thill will be helping me to assemble. I noticed that all of Grant P's bikes are shown with upright bars on the staff bikes page of the Riv website. Have any of the rest of you gone all upright. Any limits for how far you've found an albatross or bosco bar to be comfortable? Thanks, Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
