Re: [RBW] FS: Quickbeam, 64cm, orange, F/F/HS
Hi David - I've seen this bike on your site. Coincidentally, I grew up in Moorhead, and my mom still lives in Fargo. I make it up there from the Twin Cities every once in a while. I bet we probably even know some of the same people. I have the exact model Quickbeam, but the seatpost got stuck from multiple winter rides (fenderless). So, I'm interested in a replacement. Would you take $750 cash and local pickup? No fuss, no muss? Paul Sanders On Mon, May 27, 2013 at 12:09 PM, David Sprunger sprun...@gmail.com wrote: Hi. [RBW] Re: The Perfect Stem, Slightly OT
They have existed for a long time . They are not Nitto's and they are not the classic shape. Profile H2O are still made, but only in black. I use a Taiwanese Zoom brand stem on my Bombadil. They are welded , but that's alright. They are oval, but that's alright . They work wonderfully and I never have to remove anything from the bar ever again !! unless I want to :) Some may poo poo the shape of these ... ahh... to each their own. Just because I was forced to use the classic shape most of my life does not mean it was/is any better... it just mean that's all there was ! Even today ... I will gladly use a quill adapter and a threadless stem over those classic stem every day of the week. You can get short adapters all the way to really tall(225mm) ones from Nitto . Choose your own threadless stem, there's a lot to choose from in angles and lengths ! Best of both worlds (threaded/threadless) as far as I am concerned. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. HA - good one! I forgot to mention one snide remark from a fellow asking where my racks, bags, and panniers were. Pretty sure I kicked his ass. I also meant to point out in my original post that I'm NOT a racer. Don't have the knack for it, not good at it, don't really enjoy it, haven't really raced anything since college days more than two decades ago. I much prefer to just ride, but I'm also not totally averse to riding hard once in awhile. And this mixed surface course was pretty fun to ride. This event is a bit different, though. I think one of the S2S slogans is more than just a race. As you can sense from the pics, it was a fun boys weekend - hanging out, joking and laughing with a bunch of colleagues as another school year draws to a close. The top teams recruit racers from all over the world, and they get national, olympic, and worlds caliber athletes (thus the S2S nickname Bellingham Olympics.) Those teams finish hours ahead of us. My team is mostly 40ish guys in better than average (USA) shape, that somehow find the whole event (weekend) fun. One guy is a triathlete, but I think he's the only racer in the bunch. Still, we finished 144th out of nearly 500 teams - many of those teams finished hours behind us (and they had fun, too.) I think these sorts of events are becoming more popular, and they are pretty laid back and fun. So if you get an invite - consider it. Re: [RBW] Rocky Point Rd ramble.
Prior to moving to OR I don't think I had done any climbs longer than 6 miles or so. Or maybe a bit longer, how long is Railroad Grade on Tam? Anyway, after moving to OR and starting to randonneur and tour I got introduced to big long climbs and just love it. Drop into the granny and spin. If you're not in a rush it isn't a big deal and quite enjoyable. A great ride in the Portland area for summer is Larch Mtn which I've done numerous times. I did it last year with Andy from this list and a few years prior solo on my Quickbeam (since sold). It's 14 miles to the top from where Larch Mtn Rd intersects with the Old Columbia Hwy. It's a great climb that's never too steep and you can do the whole descent without ever touching your brakes. Once at the end of the road there's a mile long hiking trail out to Sherrod Point where, on a clear day, you have views of all the big volcanos in the Cascades. I'm hoping to head up there sometime in June. [RBW] Re: Clement MSO 40mm 60 tpi on a Hunq
Pierre, This is the Holy Grail it seems. A 40mm Cypress might be it, but alas it does not exist. The 42 Hetre in 650B is the ideal tire for me, but I know that's not what you're looking for. There have been several threads recently taking up this question. Some mentioned the Resist Nomad. Sounds nice, but I've not read any reports of how it does in gravel, etc. I'll likely try it one day; for now the Clements are gonna be just fine. I imagine the 120 tpi would feel nicer than the 60 tpi version I have. Good luck and if find anything let us all know. What can I say? Great all-around tire. 32mm Grand Bois Cypres: Amazing. But then my favorite is the GB Hetre on my 650B; the Cypres are similar. A little too narrow but still remarkably awesome on gravel. --40mm Clement MSO: Really nice. Running them about 35-40 front; 40-45 rear (I'm not that precise about it). In terms of non-paved roads, they did not perform, in the conditions I ride in (see pics in the link and many others in photostream), any better than my Hetres. But then I cannot run Hetres on my Hunq unless I convert to 650B---h? This is not a criticism; just my observation. Maybe I felt more secure going fast downhill? Who knows. In any event, I really liked them. They're good combination of fine on pavement and really nice on gravel. Hi All, I've got a pair of XL Olive/Brown MUSA Knickers I'd like to sell. They're essentially like new. I wore them for a little while off the bike and then did one short ride. I decided I needed a size large. I really like the knickers! I ordered two pair in large. I'll take $50 and that includes shipping. Thanks! [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
Thanks for posting this as well as the link to your detailed testing of the shoes. I've been mulling the idea of 5-10's recently and have eyeballed the various models on-line. But they seem to be primarily a West/NW part of the country phenomenon because I don't see them offered anyplace in the Midwest much. I'm always leery of buying shoes, in particular, via mail order because sizes and fitting can be a very finicky thing and I envision a flurry of back-and-forth shipping until everything is right. So I like your description of how the toe and heel fit vs. your size. Also, there's this: I've been doing serious cycling for about 40 years now, beginning with the old toe clip strap w/ cleated shoes, evolving to Look style clipless in the early 90's, to SPD clipless in the last decade and finally platform pedals and running shoes in the last 3-4 years. This is because of three things: 1) gradually increasing discomfort with retention-based shoes due to their thin, thin inserts (and their inability to accommodate orthotics, which I wear), 2) the apparent inability of the cycling industry to recognize that anyone in the world has anything but narrow feet (my final go-around with Shimano's SPD mountain shoes were a disaster in this regard - I usually wear size 9 or 9 1/2 in D width), and 3) increasing problems with cramping and foot numbness with any type of cycling shoe. However, even though the platform pedals took care of most of these issues, the running shoes do not, necessarily. When I'm standing up on a hill climb I feel like my foot is being wrapped around the pedal axle. I need something with a stiffer sole, like the cycling shoes but without their other drawbacks. So, my question is/was just how stiff some of these 5-10's are in that regard. The Freerider was one that I was considering the most. But they have two models; the standard Freerider and that VXi you bought. The former is about $20 cheaper, but does not have the same smooth contact area on the sole bottom as does the VXi. Would it still work as well? Also, how stiff are these in relative terms? Are they similar to a cycling shoe? I wouldn't want to go through the trouble to get a pair and wind up back where I am now with the running shoes. Finally, where to buy? Since they'd have to mail ordered, Zappo's seems to have the best selection and return policy of the on-line retailers. Would you agree? Where did you buy yours? Again, thanks for posting and your attention to my questions. Re: [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
I'll echo the wonders of sticky rigid soled shoes coupled with flat pinned pedals. Until I discovered that combo, I couldn't pedal pain-free. I've tried a couple of Five Ten shoes, and lately a pair of Teva and another pair of Vans MTB shoes. What I discovered is that to be comfortable on all those shoes (which unfortunately aren't very wide so I need to go larger in size) is removing their stock inserts and replacing them with green (highest arch) Specialized insoles. Other insoles might also work, but for me, the Specialized insoles are the best. Without going into more specific preferences, now I can ride for a long time without having my feet hurt like hell, the way they used to. The other tip/trick I learned, was positioning my feet so the arch is almost over the pedal spindle, instead of the traditional recommendation of having the ball of the foot go over the pedal spindle. No SPD shoes allowed me to position the foot this way. Re: [RBW] Tires for AHH?
Not sleeping well is definitely a sign that you did the right thing ordering an AHH! I just swapped the 35mm Marathon Supremes I had on my AHH for a pair of 30 (32 according to Jan) Gran Bois Extra Leger tires and I have to say that the change completely revamped the feel of the bike. Since I'm heavy I have to pump them hard (75F/90R) even though the online calculator would have me go even higher. The ride, however, is superb if a bit harsher than my bikes that have 40 and 50mm tires inflated to lower pressures. It also rides very well on dirt roads. I'm going to be doing a side by side comparison with the 35 Supremes and perhaps some other highly recommended similar width tire since I have almost identical wheelsets (only the hubs are different) to try to understand how real-to-me the differences are. I'm running Honjo fenders on that bike. Not sure how this applies to your actual road conditions, but I'm sure you're going to be getting many suggestions from the list. If Rock'n'Road tires fit the AHH, I'd make sure to give them a try. I have a pair yet to be mounted, but was thinking I'd use them on my Atlantis that can take wider tires than the AHH. [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
George I've used toe clips with slotted cleats for all of over 50 years of riding and was about to make the shift to clipless when an old injury and diagnosis of RA side lined me for over ten years. In 2010 I decided I'd had enough so I gradually eased back into riding by way of spinning. That was when I first noticed I could no longer spin a pedal up with my toe to slide my foot into he toe clip. I bought some SPD shoes and used them for a while having no problem unclipping, since I've always ridden with stiff shoes I bought a pair of Sidis with Look cleats along with Look pedals for my nearly 50 year old bike. The transition from spinning to city riding with clipless pedals was not a pretty sight, more crashes than in the entire time I've spent riding. So for now at least my Sidis and Pearl Izumi's are used for spinning. As I mentioned in the review, my feet are very lacking in their ability to respond to small motor commands from my brain, I tried just about every variety of pedal until Jim Thill sold me some platforms with friction pins. They worked well with some shoes and barely with others, by the end of the summer it was apparent the shoes were the problem, soft rubber soled shoes worked well until the temperatures dropped and the traction pins could no longer hold the shoe. Additionally, the lack of stiffness in the soft soled shoes would fatigue my feet. When I discovered 5-10s, I was intrigued but held back from making the leap because of price and the shipping hassle. I even tried the MKS urban platforms with double gated toe clips but was unable to find shoes that fit right and despite the long tongue lever on the pedal I still had problems flipping them onto my feet. When I found out about Competitive cycle's lifetime no questions asked return policy and talked to them to verify that I could indeed return shoes I had ridden with I ordered the first two pair, the return process was painless. I know Zappos offers a return policy but if you read the fine print to product has to be in pristine condition for them to accept its' return. So I'd suggest going through them to find the right shoe. The shoes I got my hands on were very sturdy and the soles are thick enough that I don't feel pressure on my feet. As to stiffness, the Impact is the stiffest and feels closer to the stiffness you probably experienced with early (late '80s to early '90s)and current road shoes, they would be on par with Sidi Dragons but more walkable because of the rubber sole. I wear an orthotic as well, I always try shoes on with my orthotic because not every shoe will work with them. As I described in the review, the 5-10 Freeriders worked well in a half size larger than normal to add more width and volume ( I normally need an E or EE) the Impacts would definitely have worked in the larger size but they seemed to be over kill for what I needed. As to stiffness, I would say both the Hellcat and the Freerider VXi slightly stiffer than an old pair old Diettos, they do flex when walking but still maintain their stiffness on the pedal, whereas they other Freerider model is more flexible but not as much as a running shoe, at that is what the folks at Comp Cycles told me. I found that between the sturdiness of the the shoe's tongue and customizing my lacing that I can significantly reduce the numbness issue in my right foot...most of the time. The Freeriders I got feel so much like road shoes I find myself thinking I actually have my old Diettos on. Hope this answers your questions, feel free to contact me on or off list if I can help you more. If I had just one set of tires to buy in 650b then it's the Fatty Rumpkins: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t105-10086.htm unfortunately no one makes a knobby in 650b with a width between 38 to 42 mm. But I have taken them on hardcore single track and jeep trails. The Schwalbe's are a favorite for many as their pretty durable. Don't get me wrong the Fatty's are durable too but I need more data points to give a 100% reccomendation. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t001.htm I also run the Grand Bois Hetres http://www.compasscycle.com/tires_gb_650_42.html mostly on pavement and light dirt roads, though others say they use them on gravel roads. [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
In case your're not happy with the 5-10's ( which have been a downhiller MTB based shoe for a long time) Specialized BG shoes come in a wide width, have room for orthotics ( at least Cycling specific ones which I use) and come with a built in varus wedge that orients your feet in the cycling position. I don't ride in anything else except a mile or two to the store/beach/Starbucks. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
FWIW, 5-10 is out of Redlands, CA. A local company for me, although they maintain a VERY low profile. Not sure why that is. But good people nonetheless. Cheers, David On Tue, May 28, 2013 at 1:34 PM, George Schick bhim...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for posting this as well as the link to your detailed testing of the shoes. [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
As far as I know, REI started the lifetime returns. Then backcountry.com began offering the same deal, presumably to compete with REI on their home turf in Utah. And backcountry.com recently purchased Competitive Cyclist, hence the lifetime returns. I've seen other online retailers also adopting the lifetime returns policy. By the way, amazon.com bought zappos.com at some point. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: 5-10 shoes and sticky soles
Oh, yeahI use 5.10's for mountain biking coupled with flats and pins. The stick much better than Vans type rubber soles. The are not stiff like road shoes. You can walk in them comfortably. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Alba vs. Bosco
Scott, Does that mean you are not happy? Need something between the Alba and the Bosco? Shorter stem? Something else? Just curious. I'm thinking I might like a more upright position on my Sam/Noodles, but maybe I should experiment with the much cheaper Wald's first? Matt. Re: [RBW] More chainring q's: how big a middle on SH?
I think it all depends on how wide the chain stays flare out. On my Hunqapillar I had to go to a wider BB in order to fit a 40 middle ring. This was no issue for my Betty. — Sent from Mailbox for iPhone On Sun, May 26, 2013 at 7:01 PM, Edwin W dweenda...@hotmail.com wrote: I have been running Rivs Sugino 26/40/chainguard on my Sam. I'm wondering how big I could go without hitting the chain stay in that middle position? 42? 44? I probably wouldn't go bigger. When would the chainguard not guard chain? Any experience would be great. I have just been running it 1x8 with no front derailer as a daily rider. I use gears 5-8 much more than 1-4. I think that is a regular ad--at least I've seen one in BT before. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Rivendell ad in Bicycle Times
...and just before a rather Riv-ish article about fishing bikes. I love The variety BT embraces.
