[RBW] Re: Who's riding a 55 Sam?
Just to give you an alternate view, Rivendell have never responded to any of my emailed questions and even when there was a slight hiccup in frame number 1, I had to phone them and they were to return my call which they never did. The issue was resolved but a little communication goes a long way. Plus the frame was late by two months. They were suppose to phone back on frame number 2, to give me geometry on the the bikes you are looking at and they never did. I did end up buying a complete bike instead where the geometry numbers are listed. My preferred communication style is email, unfortunately Rivendell doesn't follow that style of communication at least with me. I like it better when I can just get on the website and order something, without phoning or emailing, that system has worked for me beautifully. But even today the Riv website is down, the domain has expired, really how does that happen when you are mostly an internet company? Will I keep buying from them? Most definetly. They have the bikes and products that I like but I also am aware if there is a problem, communication will be lacking. Many of you have had such great interactions, so maybe I was just unlucky twice. [RBW] Spotty Conversations - Was 55 cm Sam
Meisha and John were always quick to get back to me when I emailed. Keven was much better to get on the phone. All 3 were nothing but great to deal with for me. I've never tried to contact any of the others so can't weigh in on that. I got the error on the domain name just now that you mention. Must have been an oversight with a 2/1 expiration. Being Sunday, it might be tomorrow before anyone at RBWWHQS realizes they need to call in with a credit card and re animate it. Glad you looked past the conversation problems to get what are in fact good products. Re: [RBW] Update: the woman who is 5'2
Find this whole conversation interesting. While I consider any tire 38mm too skinny to ride, a number of friends are now at the point where anything under 50mm is too skinny. Guess I could say that tastes change and people adapt. And that line of thinking is starting to make more sense to me. Honestly, in the past couple weeks have been toying with selling both my Rivendell bikes and buying something that takes at least a 2.5 inch wide tire. For my type of riding, and considering the continuing deterioration of road conditions, it's seeming to be more logical. Going from 700x20 to 700x25 isn't getting you all the way to a set of 42mm-wide Grand Bois, but it's a step in the right direction and plenty wide for most people, who will probably do 99.9% of their riding on smooth pavement. Re: [RBW] Update: the woman who is 5'2
It's very easy to walk into a bike shop and get fitted for a bike - they have a machine for that, and the guy in the shop is an expert and he has opinions. He's also plugged into the system and he sells it. Her purchase is the normal outcome of looking for a bike that fits. The good news is she is riding the bike and happy with it. [RBW] Looking for my first Rivendell
A few years ago I bought a Hunq to upgrade my LHT. It's definitely not abear. It is incredibly agile compared to theTrucker. After riding it for a year,I wanted a lighter, faster version, so I bought a Sam. Now it's tough to decide which to ride on any given day. After a couple years with both, I would choose the Hunq if I were to have one. Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It's weird that there seems to be such a variety of experiences with communication with RBW staff. Spencer, Dave, Keven and Meisha have all been fantastic. While I haven't gotten a response from Jared, I want to be very clear that I'm not upset or anything. I imagine their work days are busy and who knows what happens to mail when I send it. Perhaps there's an issue with the inbox on their end. I've had multiple exchanges with Grant on various Riv and non-Riv related topics and I've always been amazed by how readily he'll respond and engage in conversation. As for the website this morning... uggh. I bet Grant is bummed. Hopefully it'll get resolved quickly. The website is certainly a 100% better than 2006 when I first became enamored with RBW. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Cotton and Wool Winter Army Gear
I got a little creative this year with my winter gear, trading synthetic (lycra, fleece and Gore Tex) for some traditional wool and cotton Army gear, and boy am I glad I did. We've had some fabulous winter conditions for snowshoeing and mountain biking here in NJ and I got to put my new gear to the test. For the past week the snow has been too deep and powdery (a rarity for NJ), which is great for showshoeing, and thanks to steady foot traffic the trails have become semi-packed, adequate for 2.3 in knobbies to climb and descend even the steep trails... I've recently acquired 2 pieces of Swedish Army surplus gear; a 100% wool zipper sweater with extra long sleeves (with thumb holes), and a heavy cotton snow smock, both awesome and inexpensive. For warmth on yesterday's ride I wore 2 layers of wool (a thin Merino base layer and the Swedish sweater). For my outer shell I wore the snow smock. Typically I had been used to shedding layers at the top of a major climb (from over-heating)... With this wool-cotton setup the heat buildup was more gradual, and seemed to dissipate MUCH faster (due to the high breathability of the fabric). I posted a few weeks ago that I had also picked up a wool Boreal shirt (made from wool army blankets), which is SO ridiculously warm I left that at home. But for super cold days the wool Boreal and the cotton snow smock make an outstanding combo for active wear where you expect to be perspiring. And although it's not Army surplus, I added a Ventile cotton jacket (which WAS developed by the British military) as my everyday winter jacket that I wear to the office.. it just FEELS amazing. I do get some odd looks and smiles from people, *(especially my brother, who refers to me as Luke Skywalker)* when I'm wearing the snow smock, I REALLY love this gear, and am now on the lookout for other similar gear from military establishments around the world... *(hey, this stuff is field-tested, right?)* Anyone else a fan of *(peacetime use)* of army gear?? [RBW] Re: Looking for my first Rivendell
The Sam is a good bike that can be set up a ton of ways. Mine is set up with noodles and has v brakes, bar end shifters, 650 wheels with pari moto tires. I really rides fine for a road bike, descends well, all day comfort. I have thought recently about switching the bike over to albatross and putting some fatty rumpkin tires on. Making it more of a roadster than a road bike...if that makes any sense. Anyway, the Sam is really versatile in that regard. I rode it for a couple of years with our bike club and was able to hang with the group that averaged 19-20mph. I have done a few short camping trips with my Sam and it has performed well, but I did wish I had a little wider tires on a singletrack ride I did last year. I prefer the parallel top tubes on the Sam over the Hunq's diagnatubes just for aesthetic reasons. I prefer the headtube badge of the Hunq to the Sam's. I think, in the long run, if you do any kind of dirt riding and taking into account your desire to tote stuff camping, the Hunq may be the better bike for you. I haven't ridden one, but people who have seem to love them. I don't think the bike will be all that sluggish and you will have the opportunity to slap wider tires onto the bike. I don't think the bike will be a bear to ride unloaded at all. Good luck. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Looking for my first Rivendell
Mike, I can only report my experience to give you data. I spent half of last summer (I'm a teacher) just riding around on my Hunqapillar. It was never too beefy. The riding around meant paved or dirt with no hesitation in transitioning from one to the other. There were many overnight excursions exploring new roads to pleasant destinations. Now seat, seatpost, wheels, tires, and handlebars might have a lot to do with it not feeling too beefy, so here is my setup: Boscos extended far on a Ritchey mountain stem, Rich-built LX hubs in Atlas rims, and 700x55 Big Ben tires. I use a B17 on the lugged steel Nitto wayback stem. I really hit the sweet spot with the handlebars. I got the angle I like and the forward extension I need for these bars. The 90's Ritchey Force stem (with its perfect 25.4 mm clamp) made this easy. The stem is 140 mm. I ride a lot of bikes for variety, but I could go to this Hunqapillar as the only one. I sometimes think, how can so much matter seem to disappear when I ride this? Yes, I climb other bikes uphill faster (on pavement), but I think the extra time only adds to the enjoyment. On dirt, I am often faster climbing than my mountain biking friends. What the Hunq brings for dirt tours far outweighs any compromises on pavement, and those compromises on pavement are very slight. This year looks like I should finally be able to buy one. I have a few bikes now that I have set up as near a Rivendell as I can, but they're just not what I'm looking for (probably all psychological, but still). I'm torn between the Sam Hillborne and the Hunqapillar. I don't do any touring now, but that's largely due to not having a bike to do it. I have plenty of friends who go bike camping now that I'm in Texas, and am looking forward to it this summer. Upwards of 30 miles each way, fully loaded with camping gear, food, etc. for a few days' trip. Mostly, though, I am a commuter. About 4 miles each way. I have a commuter now, a 1984 Cannondale 56cm ST300 frame with an SR Apex 30/44/48 Triple front and a 12-32 8-speed Cassette in the back, 35mm Bontrager Commuter tires with Longboard fenders, Nitto Mustache bars with bar ends and a Nitto Technomic Stem, and a Daija Rear Rack I bought from VO. It's a good bike, but just a tad small and I'm not comfortable loading even for the camping trips. I would be all-in for the Hunqa, except I'm concerned about it being a bear to just ride around with a light load or unloaded if I was heading out for a day ride around town, which points me to the Sam. Plus the Sam is a good bit cheaper these days, but I would move a good deal of components from the Cannondale to the new frame. Anyway, sorry for the word vomit. My point: anyone have experience with these two as far as handling? I'd love a Hunqa. I think it's a real beauty, diaga-tube and all. I'm 6' even with longish legs. Around an 89 PBH, so I'd be looking at a 58cm in either bike, 2tt on the Sam, diaga-tube on the Hunqa. I'm just afraid it's too beefy for just riding around. Any help is much appreciated. Re: [RBW] Update: the woman who is 5'2
I totally agree and have no criticism for the woman who bought the bike. I have a very specific criticism of bike sellers (large or small) who misinform people about triples, who insist that low front gears have to be compromised just because front indexing is seen as indispensable. The 100/74 BCD crank exists, it's good, and countless people have few mechanical issues using this kind of triple to get very low gears (24T or 26T front). I think a lot of people are well served by this kind of gearing in areas that have the long, steep hills. This woman was planning to ride in an area that has such hills, and I don't know the full story, but if she communicated those riding plans and said she was interested in a triple, then the shop failed her by only telling part of the story regarding triples. If he told the her that a road triple (50x40x30 in the front) often has some trouble working well with brifters and she'd be better off with a compact double with its 34F x 28R low, then so far, not such bad advice. But that doesn't complete the story. Lower gears than that are still possible (on a road bike) in a way that does NOT lead to mechanical headaches. We all know. Shouldn't they? They work in bikes. I don't. And it's not like you have to be totally on the fringe of the industry to know about the existence of cranks like the Sugino XD. Doesn't the Long Haul Trucker come stock with a small ring of either 24T or 26T? Wouldn't most shops be aware of this? - Jim W. p.s. Now if this shop found a simple way to set her up with a 50x34 double in front and a cassette in the rear that goes all the way to 36 so her low gear would be 34F x 36R, then I take it all back! [RBW] Re: Cotton and Wool Winter Army Gear
I don't have any army surplus clothing (I do have a US Army woolen blanket, though), but I am also a recent convert to wool for cycling. After my (supposedly) breathable jacket's zipper broke, I did the same thing: I switched from those same synthetic materials to the layered wool approach. A base layer, a somewhat heavy jersey, and a thin Ibex zippered jacket work very well -- I'm no longer drenched in sweat at the end of my ride. (And I imagine mountain biking would provide an even tougher test of the clothing's performance.) I'm curious about the cotton snow smock; does it work better than wool as an outer garment? Is it somewhat water/wind resistant? Bob Ehrenbeck Garwood, New Jersey -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Looking for my first Rivendell
Hi Mike, I'm another Hunqapillar commuter (48cm.. so much smaller than yours would be, and with 26 wheels). The Hunqapillar is no slug when riding unloaded or lightly loaded (6 miles each way for the commute). In fact, it feels much faster and more comfortable than my Surly Crosscheck. I'm torn with selling my Crosscheck and moving full time on the Hunqapillar through the salty winter commute. On the one hand, I don't want to beat it up unnecessarily through the winter grit, but on the other hand, life's too short not to ride the good bike. If the component choice makes a difference to you, since you'll be moving components from your Cannondale: which Riv frame(s) use the appropriate brakes (canti vs side pull... with appropriate brake reach)? Good luck-- This is not a bad problem to have. Shoji On Sunday, February 2, 2014 12:34:56 PM UTC-5, James Warren wrote: Mike, I can only report my experience to give you data. FAT BIIE!!! Patrick Moore, who prefers ~25 mm for his go fast and 60 mm for his dirt bike in ABQ, NM (and who counsels Eric to consider selling his Rivendells very very carefully. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN On Sat, Feb 1, 2014 at 11:17 PM, Eric Norris campyonly...@me.com wrote: Granted, they're not the best for gravel, but 700x25 tires look pretty darn wide to most cyclists, who are used to seeing 700x20 or 23 tires. I have a set on the Motobecane that I purchased from Patrick in ABQ, and I've had people ask me if they are 30-something in width. Going from 700x20 to 700x25 isn't getting you all the way to a set of 42mm-wide Grand Bois, but it's a step in the right direction and plenty wide for most people, who will probably do 99.9% of their riding on smooth pavement. Maybe having a bike that will accommodate 700x28 will encourage this person to try those out ... and I can testify based on personal experience that 700x28 is a pretty darn good tire size as well. --Eric campyonly...@me.com www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org Blog: http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com Twitter: @campyonlyguy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Looking for my first Rivendell
Hello Mike. I have both a Sam Hillborne and a Hunqapillar. My Sam is a 56 single top tube, my Hunqapillar is a 58 diagatube. The Sam is a little lighter, and feels a little sportier, and I have it set up with drop bars and relatively skinny tires (32 mm) for mainly road riding. I used to have racks on it, but moved them to my Hunqapillar when I got it. The Hunqapillar has wider tires (50 mm Big Apples) and Bosco bars that replaced Noodles several months ago. I use my Hunqapillar mainly off road on a popular rail trail near me. I rarely ride it on the road, but when I do, I can stretch out to the front of the Bosco bars and move on down the road. It does not feel bearish at all. I think either would meet your needs. The Hunqapillar will carry more weight and accept wider tires. The Sam would cost a little less. Re: [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
To follow up on Kellie's idea, a used Surly Troll would work. If that is overkill, then look for a used 1980's Fuji mountain bike. My wife had one in a small size in the late 1980's. Fit her very well. A lot of older mountain bikes have longer top tubes. Keep that in mind when looking. [RBW] Stranded in a sea of salt.
Haven't been riding for two weeks because the roads around me are overkill winter salted, and no rain these days to wash them clean. More snow tomorrow and at the end of the week. Looks like no riding at least til next week sometime, if rain comes through to wash it all away. My Sam and Bleriot sit quietly. I am chomping at the bit. Now's when I need a beater to ride around on. The roads are really trashed this year. Worse than I have ever seen around here. There is so much salt that my car tires spin on it as I accelerate away from stops. The kicker is that it is so un-normally cold this winter that whenever precipitation comes through the area (which would normally be rain) it is, instead, snow and then they salt the roads even more! I am ready for warmer climes myself, but Mrs. Leven likes the 4 seasons. Well.at least its only 27 more days 'til March! Almost outta the winter weather. *Anyone else stranded these days?* Just grateful I have my health, and, Lord willing, I'll have an even better year of riding this year. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
I second the notion of looking out for those long top-tubes. That's the primary reason a vintage MTB won't work well for me. If a Bombadil or Atlantis is what you want and it's financially feasible, I say just go for it. If you have financial constraints you might consider Velo-Orange's Camargue. In your size it will have 26 wheels and it's built as an off-road expedition bike. Imagine a 90's MTB with lower Bottom bracket and a shorter top-tube and you've got the Camargue. I'm seriously contemplating the 700c version. My current bike (Handsome Devil) is a great bike and probably usable within the same parameters as a Sam Hillborne but I REALLY want the option of running full 29'er tires and that's the one place it falls short. Re: [RBW] Update: the woman who is 5'2
Well, I'm disappointed. Since Grant advertised some small bikes (like the Saluki), I was hoping she'd opt for that. A well-made small bike is supposed to be a treasure - G says most small bikes are designed wacky. (Pretty sure I have that right, but if I've misquoted, show no hesitation to set me straight.) When it was my turn to bike shop, I ALMOST fell into the bike shop trap and was *this close* to purchasing a Specialized Ruby that was somehow going to work for my bike commuting, shopping and pulling a trailer. Carbon was the best, I was told. A salesman said to me (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) that he could tell I was going to be a racer someday. If you knew me, that would throw you into fits of hysterics. I'm happy she has a shiny new bike, but I'm highly suspicious her best interests were the top priority for the bike shop. Maybe I'm an anomaly, but until Rivendell, I never got offered what was best for me. I got offered what the bike companies said was best: high-quality plastic, low bars, cutting-edge this and that. I was made to feel less important because I desired usefulness on the bike instead of lightness and swiftness. I kept thinking, You know those upright bars on my old childhood bikes? Wow, those were nice... I'd have never admitted it to the bike sales guys, though My son begs me to read The Berenstein Bears The Bike Lesson most nights. The cub receives a shiny red bicycle with fenders, swept-back bars, and a wide, sprung saddle. Warms my heart :) I hope she loves her Trek, really I do, but you be there for her when she realizes she has a wacky bike for trail-riding, Anne! Maybe, just maybe, there will be a tiny Saluki left in Grant's collection of small bikes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: Olive Sackville Lil Loafer and gray Duluth banana bag $80 each
Hi, all: I was cleaning up and noticed I haven't hardly used the Lil Loafer and haven't used the Duluth bag at all. Does $80 apiece plus shipping sound fair? Email for photos. Thanks a lot! Re: [RBW] Stranded in a sea of salt.
I don't ride in these Minnesota winters. Too many drivers are barely in control of their cars on dry pavement in July, let alone on ice and snow. Plus this winter has been remarkably cold even here, -20 lows every week since the New Year. I'm not going riding in that. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Stranded in a sea of salt.
Thanks for the encouragement, Joan. Maybe I'll just take the plunge and ride the Bleriot. [RBW] ISO: 6 cm or 7 cm Nitto or GB stem
Need 6 cm extension with 190 mm rise or less and 26.0 clamp Will trade: 44 Noodle (like new, less than 300 miles) Moustache bar (oldish) 7 cm Technomic (newish) Pick any one for a Nitto Tech Deluxe trade. Any two for a Nitto Pearl. Or, all three for a Grand Bois (I'll settle for their smaller clamp size for a GB). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
I'd look out for a small Bontrager. The collectible ones are the Race and Race Lites. http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc017-carygosset0605.html The more plebeian ones are the Privateers. The '99 Privateer Comps came with Chris King hubs... stock. My Privateer has Midge bars, and I'm still happy with the bike after 14 years. Rode it today. It was great for Oregon's logging roads and singletrack for the 6 years I lived in McMinnville. Fast, good climber, stable descender. It looks (eBay and Craigslist) like you can get a Bonty for ~$4-500. Which is about $100 more than they were going for a couple years ago. For example: http://for-sale.yakaz.com/bontrager-privateer#lo=4docid=0005ps87m5jotl3q Another option would be to rescue one of the $100 commuter bikes on Eugene Craigslist.
