[RBW] Re: To 10 speed or not? a compatibility question

2020-03-31 Thread Drw
I’m surprised you’ve succeeded with a 9 speed road shifters with a wide
cassette and mtb derailler in index mode. My own experience with this didnt
work very well (and now that I’m reading, most internet advice says this won’t
work).

I’m no expert, so I’ll defer, but you are saying a shimano index 9 speed road
shifter will pull the same amount of cable to work a 42t mtn cassette+xt
derailler?

[RBW] Sew-Ups Anyone?

2020-03-31 Thread Corwin
Hi -

My first really nice bike had sew-up [now usually referred to as tubular]
tires. This was back in the day (mid '70s) of 27" wheels, full campy
grouppo, etc. I recall two things about sew-ups/tubulars:

1) The ride was incredible. Very smooth. Seemed to glide over the pavement.
All this even though the tires were less than 30mm wide.

2) Flats were a major hassle to fix. First you had to get the tire off the
bike. Sew-ups/tubulars are either glued to the rim or secured via two-sided
tape. Then you had to find the leak, pull back the strip covering the seam
in the casing (whence the name - sew-up), cut the seam near the leak, patch
the tube inside, re-sew the seam in the casing, secure the strip covering
the seam and reinstall the tire on the rim.

I had relegated sew-ups to the distant past until I saw Jan's recent post
on tubulars. That got me to thinking about a new set of Rich-built wheels
to go on my Riv custom. I have another bike to put the current set on, and
I would like to recover some of the ride of the old bike.

Which leads me to my question - which rim would be best for my wheels? The
rims need to be compatible with tubulars. Having ridden several sets of
bomb-proof wheels using Velocity rims, I naturally gravitated to the
Velocity Major Tom. Is there a better or more appropriate rim for tubulars?
I'm planning on using Jan's FMB tubulars; probably one of the 33mm tires.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a custom built for me, and a custom built for someone else. The other
man’s custom is flat out the prettiest bike that can exist. The one built for
me has features that are never ever co-morbid.

60mm tires and fenders
Rim brakes
31.6 dropper post
Drop bar specific
Rack built for a basket (no hose clamps)
Wiring runs inside the fork and rack

Custom doesn’t suck.

2020-03-31 Thread Joe Bernard
Hmm, you must not have 9-speed Shimano bar-ends then, maybe it's 8 and that's
why you're not using the clicky side. In that case you need 9-speed but not
Advent. You can get Shimano 9 bar-ends, or this Microshift (NOT Advent).

Be aware that both are technically for Shimano road and I've only ever used the
Shimanos with mountain derailers (it works).

Aside from any other compatibility issues - I believe an Advent shifter only
clicks an Advent derailer - a different bar-end is not likely to solve your
problem with getting into the largest cassette cog. Something else is
preventing your derailer from wanting to make that stretch.

[RBW] To 10 speed or not? a compatibility question

2020-03-31 Thread Drw
ive been running shimano road bar ends, dura ace, i think, in friction mode
with a 9 speed very large cassette and XT mountain derailler. Works fine,
but i have a hard time dropping into a low gear when a steep spot sneaks up
on me. I bought some microshift 10 speed mtn bar ends a while back, not
because i want to go 10 speed, but because i wanted a bar end that would
index with a mountain derailler and large cassette. i was getting ready to
pull the trigger on buying a new 10 speed derailleur/cassette to pair with
the 10 speed shifters...

...Then i realized microshift has their 9 speed advent line. So, questions.

-if its truly compatible, it seems the easiest thing to do would be just
change out my dura-aces for the microshift advent bar ends, and keep my
current cassette and derailler. They say they are shimano compatible, so
that means with shimano derailler pull rations and stuff? am i missing
something? i'd rather not get into any sort of extra bits that make things
compatible. id like a clean system.

-is there a benefit, im not thinking of to go 10 speed? i dont find myself
lacking speeds. indexing is really what im looking for. i know that can be
heresy here, but ive been frictioning for the last decade, so ive done my
time.

-anything else, im not considering?

Thanks!

The only Scottish genes I have are Scots Irish ones, greatly diluted with

Looking beyond Chauncey, my outside limit would be $5K for f/f/integrated

I suspect that you do need a longer chain. Like I said, I've been wrestling

that the link works, if not search the RBW-owners-bunch archives for

[RBW] Possibly OT FS: Leather/Canvas Scraps

2020-03-31 Thread David B
As a hobby bag maker and leather worker, I've accumulated a lot of scrap
leather, and bigger pieces of leather that I just want to move out. Working
from home for at least the next couple of months, so tackling some chores
that I don't enjoy - next up is cleaning up my 'crafting' workshop.

Maybe you have some canvas bags that you need to patch - a piece of leather
works as a great patch.
Maybe you're bored inside and want to play around with making something
useful out of leather?
Maybe you want to try your hand at making bags and want to play around with
some canvas/leather before you buy bigger pieces?

Leather I'm putting into USPS flat rate envelopes and selling mostly for
$10 shipped.
Leather are typically small pieces - you'll get a variety of sized pieces.
You'll get a buncha leather.
Canvas, same sorta deal, but $15 shipped per option.
Canvas sizes are listed in the webshop description.

If you're interested in leather straps for making bag straps, I have a
buncha options too, just don't have those listed for sale. Contact offlist
and we can discuss further.

To buy, please go through the checkout process in my webshop at the links
for the following:
Leather scraps: https://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/leather-scrap-pieces
Canvas pieces: https://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/canvas-pieces

Thanks everyone.

Re: [RBW] Wildlife on the streets during Stay At Home

2020-03-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Oddly, the opposite in my neck of the SW high desert woods: fewer coyotes
than during the last few years in our little, infill bosque-side
neighborhood, which I attribute largely to the sudden increase in walkers
and cyclists along the Middle Rio Grand Conservancy District acequia roads
and trails; also, fewer Great Blue Herons and geese and ducks, tho' the
geese usually head north starting about this time.

The only really dangerous area animals (apart from killer cottontails*) are
rattlesnakes, and it's still to early for those.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who needs a custom?

2020-03-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
I'm curious about your budget, mostly just as an extension to your
narrative. You've told several times that Chauncey Matthews was really
slow to build your previous custom, and as a partial apology charged you
only $1000 for it. You refused to pay that little and forced him to accept
$1200, and have repeatedly said it's worth 2x to 3x the price. Given all
the special one of a kind fabrication associated with this new frame,
including a rear spacing that he's likely never done before, it seems to me
that this new project, with all it's details could be substantially more
involved than your previous custom Matthews. If you believe your previous
Matthews should have cost $2400 to $3600, and if your new Matthews is say
half-again more involved with details, should your budget be $3600-$5000?
I was thinking about the numbers when you were asking about giving Bilenky
the job. As an urban-location builder, with an international reputation,
I'd imagine Bilenky could easily cost double Chauncey Matthews, but then
you'd be looking at a $7200 - $1 frameset, which I just can't imagine
your Scottish genes allowing you to spend.

What's your budget?

Re: [RBW] Re: Who needs a custom?

2020-03-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Chauncey picked up the 2003 Curt this morning to use as the model for the
clone. At the last minute, we discussed tubing and I said, why not standard
gauge 531? I didn't specify "C", if that is even available nowadays, but I
told him, no touring-spec tubing, and Chauncey has a predilection for light
frames. He texted me just now and said he'd ordered 531. So we'll see if it
makes a difference over, say, oversized, thinwall, heat-treated tubing. I
expect it won't, but at least I'll have a new tout-531 frame.

FWIW, all the light frames I've owned have been 531: 1989 Falcon; 1973
Motobecane G Record; and currently owned but not built 19-*old* Libertas
that with steel Campy headset weighs 5 lb 9 oz in a 60 X 56 c-c size. So,
531 won't hurt, at any rate. Me, I don't think I've ever experienced
"planing", but it won't hurt to try. And, the '03 never has felt as
spritely as the '99.

Clone will ride like the '99 and '03 with the 559 X 28 wheels -- that is
the foundational design principle -- but accept Naches Passes with fenders,
God willing. Built for AM-hub wheel and QR trigger shifting system (OEM SA
wingnuts), but the Surly fixed wheel will be the mainstay. Integrated racks
and fenders, internal wiring (well, I told him to use exterior loops if
absolutely necessary). No dt shifter bosses or stops, no derailleur hangar
(hope eventually to build the Libertas up as a tubular derailleur retro
road bike).

All, God willing ...

I've always been a one bike guy and my bike, a Bianchi Super Grizzly from
the early 80's, is needing to get retired. I had the crack in the
chainstay patched/fixed, the guy did such a great job, I put in an order
for a custom to replace the frame. It is essentially a fillet brazed 650b
Atlantis with thru-axle disc brakes, longer top tube, slacker seat tube
angle, dynamo routing, threadless headset, and seat stays that join behind
the seat tube rather than the side (big thighs that rub on those
protrusions!).

The nice thing about living in southwest Wisconsin, where the cost of
living is pretty darn low, is a custom frame is the same or less than stock
steel frames made in the US. I tried to avoid going the custom route, but
when I found nothing out there that would quite fit, plus the next best
options were around the same price, oddly enough a custom didn't feel like
such an indulgence. At 29, I'm looking forward to riding this bike
exclusively for many years to come. Jobst Brandt got 20+ years out of his
last Peter Johnson frame, so I'm hoping that I can get somewhere in that
ballpark too.

[RBW] Re: Wildlife on the streets during Stay At Home

2020-03-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
Everyone in El Cerrito knows to watch out for the turkeys. Turkeys are
either confident or dumb enough that they don't give a hoot about cars.
They will strut down the middle of the road even if there are cars on the
road. They act like they own the town, and fact is, they just might.

Re: [RBW] Re: What Is a Cheviot?

2020-03-31 Thread Roberta
Joyce,

Funny how everyone loves that mustard color (I call mine butterscotch).
Not my favorite, either, but I've prettied it up with pink handlebar tape
and now I'm liking it OK.

I love, love, love the RBW blue of the current Chevs, so I went "window"
shopping, to my favorite Rivendell reseller, Analog cycles, whom I bought
my Joe Appaloosa from (when they were Gravel and Grind in MD) 3 years ago.
That's where I saw they had the current lovely water blue in stock, but in
a 50. I need a 55. If anyone is in the market for a current blue Cheviot
in a 50, here it is:
https://www.analogcycles.com/product/rivendell-cheviot-frame-and-fork/
.

I had a nice conversation with Candice about lightening up the bike. Yes,
I know that the bike weight "shouldn't" be a factor, but once it's over a
certain weight (and one is over a certain age), is just plain hard to pick
up the bike. We talked about wheels, tires, and using 1X setup to help
lighten it up. I don't mind a heavish bike, but I must be able to lift
it.

My Joe A with it's 44.25" wheelbase does fit on a bus bike rack. A longer
bike could fit, but not much longer.

[RBW] Wildlife on the streets during Stay At Home

2020-03-31 Thread Joe Bernard
I've been seeing a lot of reports of wildlife reclaiming the empty streets as
we self-quarantine from COVID19, so I wanted to address it with us riders. In
California mountain lions were already becoming more commonplace as the suburbs
continue to branch out into their homes, and this will certainly exacerbate
now. I'm posting the mountain lion instructions here, but please be aware of
bears and any wildlife in general, wherever you are. The streets have gone
quiet and they may not expect you to show up on your bike. Eyes forward!

[RBW] Re: Who needs a custom?

2020-03-31 Thread phil k
I went the custom route - though not a Rivendell. I never found Rivendells
to fit quite how I wanted with drop bars and a previous custom didn't quite
fit me as well. I was very close to pursuing a Riv custom, but was on the
fence about another custom.

Then my wife told me if I wanted to get a custom that I look into Grand
Bois since we were gonna go to Japan for our honeymoon. She knew I followed
them, and she liked the idea of a having a bike as a souvenir from our
honeymoon, and she wanted me to go in-person for fitting and also wanted to
visit Kyoto.

I walked into the shop, and Ikuo measured me up and fit me on the bike. I
had a very particular idea of what I wanted - but it was clear Ikuo was was
in charge. It was clear he had been doing this for a long time.

Few months later, my bike came in fully assembled. I was wary because I
normally have the tops of my drop bars above my saddle. However, this bike
didn't even come with a stem high enough to get the tops above the saddle.

I kept everything how it was and the bike is amazing.

I feel like with all the money I lost buying and selling all my bikes, I
should've gotten my custom sooner and saved money.

[RBW] Re: Rides Report - New MIT Atlantis

2020-03-31 Thread Steve Cole
Sorry about the error on my lowest gear. It should have read 24T
chainwheel, 40T cog. Oops.

[RBW] Who needs a custom?

2020-03-31 Thread ascpgh
When your body simply doesn’t play nice with “stock” geometry. For my either
too short torso or too long legs, if I choose the right top tube length i end
up with a foot of seat post and low bars without carnival stems. Pick the right
seat tube and I could achieve a racing position with even upright bars.

My Rambouillet was fortunately “under square”, TThttps://groups.google.com/d/msgid/rbw-owners-bunch/e245b3d5-ee2f-4ce9-a8a0-34765c18d347%40googlegroups.com.

Re: [RBW] Who needs a custom?

2020-03-31 Thread Robert Tilley
I ordered my custom a long time ago. I wanted an All Rounder bicycle in 700c
with cantis. At the time Riv didn't offer anything off the shelf. A few years
after I got my custom they started offering the Atlantis which would have given
me 95% of what I wanted in my custom.

Today I'd likely go with one of the standard Riv offerings since I'm fairly
average in size and tend to fit off the shelf bikes fine. I would really miss
the fancy lugs and the Joe Bell paint though. It's been 20 years since I got
mine delivered and I still love looking at that paint.

Subject: [RBW] Who needs a custom?

I've banged this drum elsewhere and I figure since I'm about to accept delivery
on one myself, I should ask and answer the question myself and see what others
have to say.

I had a few things involved: 1. The basal arthritis (so far predominantly in my
right hand) has become enough of an issue that I can only ride bolt upright. I
even tried recumbents again but I just can't stick with them. 2. I saw a custom
on the Rivbike site that wasn't quite a diamond frame but not quite a mixte,
the toptube was somewhere in-between. I liked that look for a low-stepover
frame. 3. I'm not getting any younger (57) and my hand is telling me my "ride a
bike every day" years are numbered, so it was time to jump if I was ever going
to get that Rivendell Custom I've always dreamed of. I asked Grant to design
one that would get them Boscos way up there.

I'd love to hear other's thoughts, plus this thread will serve as a spot for
pics of my new frame when it arrives. Who needs a custom?
