[RBW] Re: Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread Collin A
Hooboy, only once and it was quite a strange instance.

It was 10 years ago in college, I had gotten home from an evening run that
was very hot and warranted tossing my shirt along the bike path (still not
sure why I did that). I decided to ride back on my beater to retrieve my
shirt but at this point it was dark, I didn't have lights, I had no shirt
on, and was wearing short shorts.

I get to where I tossed my shirt and a cop comes barreling onto the side of
the bike path/sidewalk and nearly hits me; No sirens, but using the 1000
lux flashlight right into my eyes. He gives me the speal of riding at night
without lights (after asking what the hell I was doing) and saying "I'm not
sure where you are from, but that's not how we do things around here," but
luckily did not issue me a ticket. Anywho, I grab my shirt and walk about a
mile home in the dark. I haven't tossed a shirt on a run since...

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-13 Thread Jim M.
I'm using a Deore XT front derailer, but I'm not sure which model. What
helped me with the setup was using the Microshift thumb shifters that Riv
sells.
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/shifting/products/microshift-thumb-shifters-9-speed-sl-t09?variant=41310793549

Works really well for me. I'll see if I can find the model number in the
daylight.

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet/Romulus 650b Conversion

2020-09-13 Thread Sky Coulter
Hi Jonathan,

As it happens, i’ve converted both a romulus and a rambouillet from 700c to
650b. I had a saluki as well to compare against. I would say both frames
largely retained similar handling characteristics, with a slight increase in
‘wanderability’ on the front end and obviously a cushier ride all over. The
romulus languishes in a closet as a frameset at present, the ram is presently
still setup w grand bois hetres at 650b, but hasn’t been out for a ride in half
a year.

The fact of the matter is I’m completely occupied w my toyo Atlantis. Its the
bike i use to commute and its the bike i’d pull down to go for a fun ride or a
short tour. For me, it makes owning more than one bike just seem wasteful; i
like it more than any other bike, ever. In fact, i find myself worrying about
my tendency to hop curbs and ride rough, if it breaks i’ll need to find
another. And sometimes i think i should start stock piling atlanti against
that future possibility.

In an effort to justify owning more than one bike, i’ve been think about
electrifying my clementine. It might make a nice commuter for last minute
overtime shifts or days when i’m just feeling a bit low energy.

But if you want to ride a wider tire, converting to 650b should accomplish that
for you without drastically altering the ride.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-13 Thread Nathan F
I had the same issue when setting up my girlfriend's Cheviot last year. She
runs the Silver 34/24 crank set up with a 9 speed drivetrain, set up with
trigger shifters. At first I tried a cheap triple, which didn't work as
well as I'd have hoped (would've been fine if run friction). Then a Sora
double, which didn't work at all (unique pull ratio, again would've been
fine if run friction).

Eventually I settled on a 10-speed Deore XT FD-M785. It works perfectly,
and I found the "low clamp" much easier to set up than other styles, as the
clamp is below the small chainring. Yes it's not an elegantly forged piece
of art, but hey it's got a silver cage and the uglier bits are hidden
behind the crankset.

I like that Riv is offering more original parts and tools. I think this
could be a growth area for them, especially the tools, which usually sell
out instantly. And since their frame designs have begun to diverge from my
tastes -- eg, I am disappointed the new Hillborne will have ball and
 socket
seat stay ends and longer chainstays -- the parts and tools give me a way
 to keep supporting them.

saddle. That looks like it'll work quite well.

I was going to suggest something similar as Bob.
Take the Metro North all the way to Wassaic and get off there. You could
do a nice loop in the rolling farmland of eastern Dutchess County and go
into NW Connecticut and even Western Massachusetts and make it back to the
train station and home in 1 day.

Rivendell lists the dimensions as 7 x 9 x 5 but neglect to say if the 7 & 9
are width & depth. At the end of the video, the on-the-bike shots it looks
deeper / longer than wider, judging by the fit on the saddle.

Is the bag just a bit longer than wide? Might be just what I need.

Jason there was a photo of a Microshift FD in an email or blahg that they
bought to try for small rings. Looking at their catalog there are 2 such
FD's . The "s" after the model denotes the "shorter chainstay" models which
have a shorter cage. Note the 36-50t "top gear" ring. I could only find
these for sale overseas as I'm not privy to business sources to get them.
Who knows if they will start selling them.

2020-09-13 Thread Joe Bernard
"Since it is basically a triple with the large ring not there and a guard
in it’s place wouldn’t a triple FD work?"

Yes, it just looks odd because it sits so high over a guard barely bigger
than the "middle" ring. This "problem" started with Grant's original plan
to have these cranks run without front derailers, we were supposed to kick
the chain over or use a stick. That idea never made it to new complete Rivs
nor did it catch on with any of us, so now we have small-ring doubles with
a small outer guard and big gaps to derailer cages. Whoops!

Re: [RBW] Re: New Riv cantilever brakes

2020-09-13 Thread Joel Stern
Thanks, I just pulled up the latest email, it got by me.

“ The seattube sizes are slightly different this time. Here's the PBH range:

48cm 650b = 77-80cm
51cm 650b = 80-83cm
54cm 700c = 84-86cm
57cm 700c = 86-90cm
60cm 700c = 89-94cm

The changes from the last batch are minimal:

   - Ball n socket seatlugs
   - Slightly longer chainstays. The 60cm has the longest at 48.5cm. They
   were too short before.

It's compatible with all of our bars from Bosco to Noodles and is good for
just about all reasonable riding.

It's not a full blown trail bike like the Gus/Susie but it'll do just fine
on most trails and isn't inappropriate on a road ride either if you're with
like-minded people. You can stretch it into almost all types of riding
outside of downhill, BMX and road racing.

I used mine for Mt Diablo lunch rides with speedy Mark, one night camping
trips on fairly mellow trails, and even unloaded, careful singletrack
riding. Most of the time it was a fantastic commuter though.”

I can't say much about the Riv design though as I've not seem them in

Cantilevers matter to me, I prefer what the bike industry must consider
"not very user friendly" as I find that comical as they ARE friendly ! The

V-brakes and "user friendly" ? Nah ... what fun is that ? !!!

2020-09-13 Thread Mike Godwin
Aaron, I've gotta go with Justin. I'm generally pretty accommodating. The
first instance, mid-morning, no traffic, deep in a a suburban neighborhood,
the cop could see I was safe. No blowing through the stop sign at full
speed, etc. I explained I was safe about my riding, my intent is not to get
smacked by a car. No explanation would sway the cops opinion. Oh well.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Riv cantilever brakes

2020-09-13 Thread S
Yes, quite a few group members have called the SH the "perfect Riv," or
words to that effect, and I was set to buy one when they became available.
No longer. I wish they had left well enough, or maybe even "perfect,"
alone. I agree variety would be nice -- I don't think chainstay length is
as cut-and-dried a design decision as the latest email made it sound, "the
chainstays were too short." There are always trade offs in bike design and
although I agree that *longish* stays are good, I think Riv has taken that
idea a bit too far or, at least, applied it too widely. Of course, up to
them. They dig it, I don't, no big deal, I will buy the parts and tools
instead.

Since it is basically a triple with the large ring not there and a guard in

[RBW] Re: Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread Joel
When riding in traffic I always stop at a red and take the lane. As soon
at it turns green I move over to the right, I used to be better about
stopping completely at stop signs, I do slow up a lot to see what is
coming. Even at a 4 way stop I don’t trust most drivers to not try and beat
me on my bike but most wave me on. I never argue with the police, I have
been told to go on but slow down when driving and once given a warning. I
think being a bit older now makes me less of a target as long as I am not
breaking any rules. Drivers I still don’t trust, getting waived on when
there is a car coming up on their right that either does not see me or does
not care.

I did get yelled at by another older cyclist last week as he pointed to his
helmet and I pointed to my Riv cap.

Today I took the day off, I cannot ride more than 2-3 days in a row, if I
do I pay a price. Last week I had a Coolief treatment in my left knee that
has left it pain free but the right knee that had a replacement is not as
happy with too many days in a row.

I know when I am driving and see a bike I always give them the right of way
as I am sure most cyclists do.

I am really hoping Grant is working on a Silver FD to solve exactly this
issue - it would be a godsend to have a simple & classy looking front

several.

S, this is the second time I have heard this in 2 days, here and on the FB

we would have some variety. I found an Orange Sam, new at a decent price
but I am not sure on the orange, but now it is a big maybe.

[RBW] Re: New Riv cantilever brakes

2020-09-13 Thread S
I agree that the design looks very close to the Avid Shorty. I still plan
to buy a pair, if they aren't too expensive.

I like that Riv is offering more original parts and tools. I think this
could be a growth area for them, especially the tools, which usually sell
out instantly. And since their frame designs have begun to diverge from my
tastes -- eg, I am disappointed the new Hillborne will have ball and socket
seat stay ends and longer chainstays -- the parts and tools give me a way
to keep supporting them.

[RBW] Re: Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread A. Douglas M.
I never understood the point of arguing with an officer in these
situations. It only serves to prolong the incident? I also find it
interesting to see animosity towards people doing their job from what is
usually a super friendly group of people. (Cyclists and especially RBW
cyclists)

I’ve never been pulled over on my bike in spite of doing many stop sign
slow rolls. I have however set up many operations where I had a law
enforcement officer on a bike with a radio and a marked car behind them.
The officer would ride and report when vehicles passed too closely in
violation of state law. Then the vehicle would be stopped and driver
educated. Those quickly got the word out that cyclist safety was being
taken seriously along that busy stretch of highway.

Best,

Aaron

Like Justin, I've receive 2 tickets for rolling through stop signs, in the
middle of suburbia. One was riding to daily class to CSUN in Northridge CA,
second one coming from a geo friends house, different neighborhood but same
town. First time I refused to give the cop physical proof of my identity
because I was so angry that I was being pulled over at a 4-way stop you can
see 100s of yards in all directions. I think I slowed enough to stop but
did not put my foot down. Threatened me with jail, so he followed me to my
house and confirmed by identity with my girlfriend then wrote the ticket.
Last time, like you Joel, I "matched" the identity of someone who just
robbed a bank. I wrote that up on the ibob list, the list topic was "Do You

Once by a rent-a-cop, once by a random stranger.

Long ago I did Wednesday night rides that left from UW-Milwaukee's student
union. One night I was at the front of the pack as we rolled to the 4-way
stop at the NE corner of the campus. I signaled a stop, briefly stopped
(didn't put down a foot), and proceeded. No cars were at the intersection.
Around 20 other bikers followed me through. A UWM security "officer" was
behind us, gunned the engine to pull around the group, and swerved and
braked right in front of me. He jumped out of the car and started screaming
at us. I calmly told him that I stopped, it was clear, and I proceeded. I
then rode away as he kept screaming.

On a commute home one night, not far from that spot, I stopped in a line of
cars at a red light. It's a 2-lane, with left turn only in the left lane,
and I was going straight. As is my habit, I took the lane (there's zero
shoulder there), positioning myself a bit right of the center of the car in
front of me. After we started moving again, on the other side of the
intersection the car that had been behind me pulled up beside me and waved
me over. Needless to say, I was ready for a fight. Instead, the guy said "I
just want to thank you for riding correctly. Most bikers blow through that
intersection." Took me aback, but he's right. It's a T-intersection, and
we were going across the top of the T. Cyclists frequently bomb down the
right past the line of waiting cars and blow the red light.

Cyclists blowing stop signs is a pandemic around here. I'm not talking
about slowing and rolling, or Idaho stops. I'm talking about full speed
through the intersection without a hint of slowing or looking. Even people
I ride with, and know and like, seem to have decided that stop signs are
irrelevant in the last couple of years. Amusingly, they have their helmets
and their blinky lights, so they must be safe, right? Well, it's not
really that funny. A few weeks ago I saw a racer boy blow through a couple
of stop signs at fairly busy intersections and was pretty steamed. Later
that afternoon I saw that a bicyclist was killed right around that time, 20
miles north of us. I know the intersection pretty well. The bicyclist blew
through a stop sign, crossing a rural road where people regularly drive
60mph (and don't have a stop sign there). The corn was high, so I'm
guessing the driver and the cyclist didn't see each other until too late.
There's a good chance the cyclist never saw the car.

Humans are incredibly bad at calculating risk - reward ratios.

How about Taconic State Park - Rudd Pond (just north of Millerton, NY),
followed by Bash Bish Falls State Park further north?

(I've been to the former, but not the latter.) You can take the Metro North
train to Wassaic, and a good portion of the route from Wassaic to Rudd Pond
to Bash Bish is on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail.

Re: [RBW] Platform bike racks, again

2020-09-13 Thread Jan O.
My MIT Atlantis fits perfectly fine with it's long wheelbase and basket.
The rack accommodates up to 54” wheelbase and up to 3.1” tires in the
standard configuration.

1UP offers a "Fat Tire Spacer Kit" for tires wider than 3.1” up to 4.9”. On
a double rack, you could configure a tray for the Atlantis and the other
tray for a fat bike with tires bigger than 3.1”.

Re: [RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Long ago I rode carefully, as usual, through a 4-way stop and got lights
and siren. I was annoyed; said, pompously: "I've been riding in urban
traffic for over 30 years (I think I was 35 at the time and I was 11 when
my parents first let me ride to school downtown -- but in sleepy if crowded
Bangalore of the mid 1960s); but I can't blame the cop, who wouldn't be as
aware of how safe this is on a bike, compared to a car, as a cyclist.

A pretty woman cop used her radar gun on me and yelled, "19!" ... but I was
married at the time.

I have to say that I've been let off enough times by cops with warnings
after Idaho stops or crashing yellows in cars to have gotten away with more
than I paid for.

My wife, daughter, and I were coming back from a friends's house late one

are those that have to beat a bike at a 4 way stop.

[RBW] Re: New Riv cantilever brakes

2020-09-13 Thread Garth

I was hoping for a simpler, old-school sort of cantilever, more like the
Rene Herse version which while wildly priced, ticks all the boxes of what
I'd like in a cantilever brake (Post style pads with toe-in washers, pads
open up wide past the frame).

I can't say much about the Riv design though as I've not seem them in
person as to how they work, or tire/frame clearance and all. The blueprint
appears complicated though.

Cantilevers matter to me, I prefer what the bike industry must consider
"not very user friendly" as I find that comical as they ARE friendly ! The
kind with post style pads and washers for toe in. Infinite adjustabilty.

V-brakes and "user friendly" ? Nah ... what fun is that ? !!!

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-13 Thread brendonoid

I currently have a FD-CX70 (that riv used to sell) running indexed with a
3x LX trigger shifter from the 90s. Works great but like others said you
have to have a big gap. Align it with an imaginary 3rd ring in the crank
and you'll be fine. If you aren't trying to index just about any old
derailleur can be made to work.

Love this crank for its Hillibiking competence. and the steel chainrings
are super strong to boot.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-13 Thread Garth

Yes to what DougP has stated. Relax the FD gap ! I have a seeming
large gap also on my Bombadil 24/36/44 crank with a road FD, whose radius
doesn't really match at all. On top of that the flat regular 44t ring is
reversed, as 44t rings are designed for middle/small use. So in "theory"
it's just all messed up, but reality isn't a theory. I use a little more
finesse to shift to the big ring, and it just works. That's the beauty of
all this manual shifting stuff, it's very fluid and adaptable and friendly.
