[RBW] Re: Fitting STIs in a 22.2 moustache/albatross inspired handlebar

2020-11-18 Thread Joe Bernard
Hey Juan Pablo, that's a nice bike! While road levers are nominally for
bigger bars, they use a band clamp that will snug down tight enough on
22.2. I did it with Tiagra levers on a flipped Albatross once and it worked
ok, you just gotta get them far enough around the curve for the brake lever
to work without bottoming out on the bars. Shifting the paddles that way is
kinda weird but you get used to it. Give it a try!

[RBW] Re: Chambray shirt deal alert

2020-11-18 Thread Benz Ouyang, Sunnyvale, CA
I’m not sure if the size refers to the pre-shrink or post-shrunk
measurements, because if you looking around at the other items, even the
ones not expected to shrink (like the polyesters), the sizes are all the
same. So it’s likely the latter than the former.

I’m really just asking if the sizing is correct, because 42.25” is quite
large for a size small. Maybe they’re intended to be loose, but the
description also isn’t terribly helpful . I like when sites list the
model’s height and weight, and the size of the clothing the model is
wearing, to give a more practical and useful reference.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-18 Thread Jason Fuller
Joe P - I expect you're right. I bought an XO-1 and a Sam last year and the
XO-1 didn't last long because despite being a great bike worthy of its
accolades, it's well overshadowed by the Hillborne. It's maybe a bit less
zippy, but the small concession there is paid back tenfold in ride quality.
RBW makes a number of "all rounder" bikes today but I think the Sam is
probably my favourite blend.

Re: [RBW] Ideas needed for offseting front rack from exposed cable

2020-11-18 Thread Roberta
Thank you John, Joe, Brian and Eric!

I have two bags but I don't think this one is deep enough to cause a
rubbing issue: Carradice Zippered Roll,
https://www.carradice.co.uk/bags/saddle-packs-sqr-bags/originals-zipped-roll

It's this VO bag that I got from a member here that I'm concerned about.
I bought it because I can use it without a decaleur. The bag part is about
7" deep, but it could hang lower after attachment. My other Riv is a Joe
Appaloosa with V Brakes, but Joe makes a good point that I wouldn't want a
bag marring the head tube.

Eric, that's an interesting look at the item. John H. also gave it a
thumbs up for quality.

Hey Harth,

Welcome to the group! Much enjoyed reading your/All-rounder's riding
history. With all those dents and scratches in the right places, I'd say
the All-rounder has aged gracefully. Or maybe battle-hardened would the
right term :) The partnership is nearing a quarter century!

It would be my dream to put my bike (which is Susie/Wolbis. Before settling
with it I tried 3 other Riv's over last 4 years. Feels like this's THE
one! I also have a Roadini, but that's more of a fashion bike to ride to
work and keep it at my cubicle. Wolbis is doing all the real work) to as
much use as your All-rounder over next 25 years.

See you around!

Re: [RBW] Re: 630 wheel size

2020-11-18 Thread Victor Hanson
Sam,

Be careful, remember its a 4mm radius when replacing 700c with 27 1/4"
(American size from the 10 spd craze in the 70's.) Going the other way
placing 700c wheels on a 27 1/4" frame is no problem, use a brake with
greater reach. BUT WHY?

Eric yes 27 1/4 was the most popular size think Schwinn Varsity ect.
630mm refers to the bead seat diameter.

[RBW] Re: What? No bikes at RBW?

2020-11-18 Thread Andrew Stevens
Salsa ran out of their 2020 allotment in mid April, purportedly. We ordered
Surlys in August, and werent given the option of sizes/models, just paid
for a certain number of bikes, with a delivery timeframe is
"October-February." All Surly completes have been pre-allotted to bike
shops through next summer, and aren't being added to distributors websites
for B2B (business to business) purchases. We were unable to source 26x2"
tubes for 6 weeks, because production was so backed up in China/Taiwan

I imagine Rivs long distance planning and good relationship with their
manufacturers keeps their production times more consistent, but everyone is
feeling the production times slow down.

Here is a New York Times article about
it: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/18/nyregion/bike-shortage-coronavirus.html

Re: [RBW] How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-18 Thread Ryan Stanis
David, that build looks super fresh with the Oracle Ridge tires on there!
I'll have to pick up a pair at some point and pull the fenders to give
those a try.

OP, I've been running Panaracer Gravel King SK 700x43s on CR18s with VO
Zeppelin Fenders (52mm wide?) on a Canti Sam and the fit istight.
Fenders can get clogged with debris easily and if the fenders get knocked
around i'll end up getting tire rub when really cranking up climbs. It
wasn't til I went climbing through some fallen trees after a big storm that
the fender started doing thatShould've taken a hint and turned around.

[RBW] Re: My new 26" wheeled drop bar Atlantis

2020-11-18 Thread dave_manze...@yahoo.com
The brake lever hack It is literally 2 holes drilled with a cordless drill.
I didn’t even take the levers apart. The part to worry about is where to
drill and what size holes to make. You need to remove a circlip to remove
the barrel shaped cable stop. There are 2 bushings, one for each side, that
determine the required hole sizes. The larger hole has to be positioned so
that the bushing and circlip can be reinstalled in the new location, and
there isn’t much room. It is a little fiddly to then install the cables,
but it’s doable. If there is enough interest I could try to create an
illustrated guide.

Yes, the crankset is the Andel 3-pin dressed up with some gold anno bits. I
was also nervous about drilling the TRP levers, so I bought a cheap set of
knockoff Lixada levers to practice on first as a “proof-of-concept”.

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-18 Thread Joe P
Really excited that I was able to order a 54 cm Sam, the dark gold. My
stalking of the RBW website paid off! I have had only one bike for the last
30 years (an x-03). I love that bike, but I have a feeling this is going to
be a whole different thing.

makes sense to me re: this sale.

Might also be worth mentioning that IME these tires are what I'd call
slightly undersized, meaning I generally don't get the labeled width until
they're on wider modern rims, like 23-25mm outer width. HED
 Belgium/Ardennes C2/+, H+Sons Archetype mostly for me.

The all-black can work fine depending on the rest of the bike, and I
like not having to worry about tan sidewalls getting funky. They are not
the tire for you if you're looking for that understated tiny-label look.
 They ride real nice.

[RBW] Switch from Brooks B17 to Brooks Cambium C17 - Does the seat slide further back

2020-11-18 Thread James Warren
Hi All,

I had a Brooks B17 (copper rivet nice one) on my Hunqapillar. I just
changed to a C17. I tried to measure to see if where I sit on the seat is
now further to the rear of the bike if both saddles are as far back on
their rails as they can be. But it's a little hard to measure in order to
be quantitative.

But when riding the bike, I feel like maybe I am sitting further back to
the rear now. Or is it an illusion?

Has anyone else had this feeling or experience or success actually
measuring this comparison?

Thank you,
Jimmy Warren

[RBW] FS: Nitto HiRise 135, Old Man Mountain rack

2020-11-18 Thread Joe Bernard
Very good condition quill stem Riv sold until recently, shoots your bars to
the moon as Grant would say.
13.5cm along the upjutter part, reach is about like a flat 12cm stem, 25.4
clamp.
$50 plus shipping.

Old Man Mountain front rack that came off my now-Jason-has-it Bombadil,
made in Santa Barbara CA., I didn't know anything about these and
discovered holy crap they're expensive! Fixins for mounting to fork
dropouts and canti mounts which makes it a good candidate for v-braked
bikes, the company sells a bunch of kits to fit it to just about anything.
$50 plus shipping.

Hollaback at joeremi62 gmail com
Socially distanced pick up at front door and pop the cash in the mailbox
also doable.

Thanks,
Joe Bernard

I’ll just chime in to say that the Nitto bag support is indeed very nice.
Here’s a photo of the Nitto part holding up a small (Acorn) bag on my 1972

Kids are outgrowing this one and we're switching over to tag-a-long bikes,

Yepp Maxi Easyfit Rear Seat - gray
Steco 'Power Safety Carrier' Rear Rack - silver, burly steel, has Easyfit
window so seat mounts directly to rack

Both used on my Clem for a few years. Photo on my Clem from a couple years
ago (same condition overall now):
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjgPAmzBkDe/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Selling both together. Shipping won't be cheap, but I do have a box ready
to go.
$140 plus shipping for the set.
Contact off list if you can.
Paypal for payment.

Pickup near River Grove, IL is an option - though please make arrangements
to pay first with PayPal, and pickup within a week - doing some garage work
so clearing things out.

Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Ideas needed for offseting front rack from exposed cable

2020-11-18 Thread Joe Bernard
Roberta,

What handlebar bag are you using? I've never worried much about cable rub,
I actually like that a centerpull (or canti) brake puts a cable through the
center so it acts as a block to keep the bag off the headtube.

[RBW] Ideas needed for offseting front rack from exposed cable

2020-11-18 Thread Roberta
Does anyone have suggestions for something to "offset" a front handlebar
bag from rubbing on the front exposed cable?

With John H's help, we found this
https://www.benscycle.com/nitto-f16-front-handlebar-hook-bag-supporter-bag-part-nitto--870-288-10/p

, but it's a bit pricey. The support "shelf" is nice but not required.

I'm not interested in a permanently fixed item. as I'd move it from Riv to
Riv. Other than the price, I like this item.

Thanks,
Roberta

[RBW] Re: "Cross-training" for cycling: walking? Also: Inexpensive but large and practical backpack?

2020-11-18 Thread Robert Hakim
Patrick, not sure if you are an app guy or not, but I found the Nike
Training Club app to be helpful to get me motivate to maintain my body. It
helps to motivate by breaking down the barriers I perceive and removing
most excuses. (Only excuse left now is me being a lazy, lazy man)

I was working on a project documenting construction errors and it’s fix
which required me to take thousands upon thousands of photos with a dslr
mounted with a telephoto lens and large flash unit every day for months.
The majority of the photos were on very high ceilings, you can imagine the
havoc this unleashed on my young neck and back, constantly craning upwards
and compensating for whatever pain developed the day before...

A friend recommended me the app and told me to ignore my disdain for
traditional athletics and standard exercise. I heeded the advice and was
quite pleased what great leaps and bounds of progress I made with
relatively little commitment. The app is nice because you can select the
body group you want to maintain and they have encouraging guided videos
that walk you through the process and show you how to modify the drills for
comfort or lack of equipment.

Best of all, no gym required! It removes that huge barrier for me, I can
now flail in my living room with nary a soul to cast judgment on my lack of
strength or strings of winded expletives muttered throughout the event.

I liken the improvements to finally changing the cable housing on your
shifting and braking system after a few years of dealing with dwindling
performance. It will make you feel crisp and refreshed!

Best of luck
Robert

Patrick,
there's gotta be others here with lower disc issues, L5-6 for me. It seems
like once you start feeling those twinges, it "suggests" other issues are
going on. Stretching moves every day keeps the discs flexible, it helps get
fluids into the discs, and minor benefit it helps the core muscles by
equalizing the tension. Mix in with different body exercises (specific leg
lifts, other things, planks, push ups). Push-ups help me with riding on
drops. Bike riding actually causes tightening of the muscles that connect
into the lower back, so you want to even things out and keep loose. Walking
is a very good way of keeping things loose. Unlike Jack, if I'm doing
construction projects, it really aggravates the lower back, but gotta keep
stretching. I had an episode last summer where my right leg was going
numb, but on the inside - hip to ankle - stabbing hot pain that kept me
from sleeping for 3 days. Now I know what true sciatic pain is, it is
brutal. Its from compression of the spine on nerves where the discs are
damaged. I don't like doing the exercises either, but I do like being able
to ride and walk and hike. Don't let it get away from you.

[RBW] Re: "Cross-training" for cycling: walking? Also: Inexpensive but large and practical backpack?

2020-11-18 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi Patrick,
Late to the party here. I do a short intense work out of pushups, squats,
and planks. 10 minutes maximum. Start with pushups by doing as many as I
can, switch to squats, usually about 20, do a 30 second plank, back to
squats 20 or as many as I can, pushups again, and rotate. The key is very
little rest between sets. If I had a pull up bar I would do those in the
rotation too.
I have inflammation issues and if I do this a few times a week an dstay
away from sugar and grains, I feel great. my riding is way stronger too.

Oh boy, I purchased the last one in stock for the long head tubes ! I had
not really planned on buying one but after struggling with DIY hacks I
rather had enough of that.

If you have one and maybe having second thoughts, I would love to buy
 it. I
have a few builds coming up where I will need it. Despite being on the
notification email, the instagram feed, and the newsletter, I have
 missed
it twice. I think they've sold out both times within a couple of hours.

I know, these are out there, but I've seen it work before! Please

[RBW] Re: Wow! What's going on with Rivendell caps going for $$$

2020-11-18 Thread John A. Bennett
I remember that one. It came in as a surprise.
Grant said it was the ugliest cap he'd ever seen.
We didn't sell them. A few leaked out, I guess.

Used Rivendell caps normally don't sell for anywhere near this amount on
eBay.

Looking at Blue Lug's Hillborne gallery

they seem to have a few builds with Minimotos and 40mm+ tires and some
 with
fenders, maybe that will give you some clues as to what is possible.

Hey Dan, is the sizing correct? Their small has a chest size of 42.25",
which is 21" pit-to-pit and definitely a little large for a small. Is that
the "Riv fit" you're talking about?
