Another Olympus OM-D E-M5 mk II user here. The 17mm f/1.8 lens keeps things 
nice and light when the camera is hanging from my neck or on my shoulder, 
ready for action photos during group rides.

Re: [RBW] Getting my groove back on with the Platypus - dealing with near misses

Some great advice here -- especially to stay far enough to the left to 
discourage unsafe passing, and to take the lane when approaching an 
intersection. When I do need to take the lane, I also try to keep up with 
the vehicle speeds as best I can.

When approaching an intersection, I make sure to never, ever ride alongside 
a vehicle (that might turn into me with no warning). I always stay behind 
that car and still make sure I'm visible to the car behind.

Begin crossing an intersection right after the cross traffic stops and just 
before your light turns green. Giving yourself a head start before all the 
chaos of turning traffic increases your visibility and also helps avoid the 
left crosses and right hooks. This works like a Leading Pedestrian Interval 
traffic signal -- but just be sure to watch out for red light runners on 
the street perpendicular to you (that practice unfortunately seems to have 
been normalized).

Also, ride assertively and be communicative with arm gestures. 

I'm also in New Jersey, but in a fairly dense area where there are so many 
side streets and cut-throughs that I can avoid busy and dangerous roads. 
(I'm also thankful that my gym is a only mile away.)

Re: [RBW] Your cyclist vs. motorist war/horror stories

Pam,

Your summary of the things you do on the road, regarding placement and 
communication, is excellent! I try to do all those things. I like that 
humanizing look-back!

Regarding communication/signaling: if I'm in the lane and I need to be 
there to avoid a close pass when there's an oncoming car in the opposite 
lane, I'll stick my left arm out and at an angle, to emphasize the "hold on 
just a sec" to the driver behind me. When it's all clear, I'll then give 
them a "come on through" wave when I move over, followed by a "thank you" 
wave. All this just emphasizes that we aren't in the lane to be jerks, we 
just want to be safe.

I don't have too many bad encounters with motorists -- while I live in a 
dense area, there are many less busy adjacent streets, paths, and 
cut-throughs to use to get around without needing to go on busy roads. (And 
thankfully there are no "stroads" in my area.) My bad encounters usually 
happen when I'm too far to the side of the road and I get a close pass. 
When I catch up to (some of) them, I tell them it's a dangerous move and 
explain that New Jersey has a new four-foot passing law. The drivers I 
speak to are receptive to the message -- they're just oblivious that being 
passed closely is a totally different experience when one doesn't have two 
tons of steel surrounding them.

Hi Roberta,

It's a load of fun (I've done it twice, many years ago). The ride through 
Manhattan is amazing, but since it's right after the mass start, it's super 
packed and you need to be on guard against collisions from 
inexperienced/distracted riders. But after the pack spreads out, it becomes 
really enjoyable -- and one gets to ride on roads that would be either 
illegal or suicidal otherwise!

Also recommend leaving your car at or near the Staten Island ferry terminal.

The original Raleigh-branded Weinmann calipers had (just) enough reach -- 
at the very bottom of the slot in the brake arm, the brake shoes just made 
it to the 700C rim's braking surface. It's roughly a 65-mm distance from 
the brake fixing screw to where the shoes connect to the arm.

Good to hear you're another practitioner of WHM and have benefitted from 
it! I haven't done the ice baths yet, but I do take ice cold showers daily. 
I've never felt better, but I'm hoping it'll eventually provide some relief 
to the cold fingers I experience during winter riding.

I usually wear three layers of wool (baselayer, jersey, jacket) to keep my 
core warm but still allow for moisture removal so I don't sweat. (If it's 
well below freezing, then a rain jacket goes on over a baselayer and a 
sweater.) For my feet, I wear either trail shoes (adding a layer of saran 
wrap over my toes above my socks) or insulated Merrell winter boots. A wool 
watch cap covers my ears underneath a helmet, and a pair of softshell 
gloves with glove liners underneath for my hands. 

But lately I've found that my index fingers get super cold after a while, 
no matter what I do. I've been doing the Wim Hof Method ice-cold showers 
this past year, and I've noticed that I can sometimes get Raynaud-like 
symptoms like Andy Cheatham, so I guess that explains that!

Regarding parking: Lot 1 might fill up sooner, but Lots 1 and 2 are right 
next to each other, so it really doesn't matter; we'll see each other. Even 
if you park on the street somewhere, just come down to the trail.

Regarding the trail surface: I haven't been on the HHT since 2018, but I 
seem to remember that most of the trail is paved, and what isn't is a very 
fine crushed stone surface -- in other words, any bike and any tire will be 
fine on it. 

Regarding the climb: They are approaches to a fairly high bridge, but the 
grade really isn't bad at all.

Regarding the ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch: It's a nice (and 
shorter) alterntive to going back to Matawan. As Dave pointed out, the ride 
from Sandy Hook to Long Branch starts off alongside a large rock seawall on 
a paved trail, but that's only for a couple of miles -- after that, you're 
on Rt. 36 as you enter downtown Sea Bright. After Sea Bright, there's a 
wide shoulder and you pass nice homes and some beach clubs. At Long Branch 
Rt. 36 turns into a four-lane highway (Ocean Blvd), so I've turned onto 
side streets from there to get to the train station. A ride along Ocean Ave 
(not Blvd) and on the promenade at this time of year (no crowds) would be 
very nice, as it's obviously right along the ocean.

To give you an idea of what some of the route is like, the photos in the 
below link are from a ride where I took the train from Linden to 
Aberdeen/Matawan, rode east along the HHT, turned right after the bridge 
(bypassed Sandy Hook that time), rode down Rt. 36 and hit the beach at 
Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch to go for a swim before 
taking the train home:

Per the aerial map in the below link (scroll down), the area I mentioned 
earlier is free commuter parking for Seastreak (Lot 2). (The smaller Lot 1 
also works, if spaces are available at 11:30.) I think you were looking at 
Lot 3.) I believe what you're suggesting is Lot 4, which would also work. 
But wherever you may want to park, you'll be sure to see Rivs circling 
about.

The HHT Activity Center has no parking and it's right along busy and noisy 
Rt. 36; the Shore Casino appears to be a banquet hall (not a casino), so I 
suggest the Atlantic Highlands meet-up location be the parking lot along 
First Ave (left side as you head toward the pier). We can then ride to 
Highlands to meet up with anyone arriving by ferry. (Remember, according to 
Seastreak's website there is no ferry at Atlantic Highlands at this time.)

Most of the path from Matawan to Highlands is a former railroad grade, so 
it's basically flat. Between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands, it runs 
right along the bay, so it avoids Mt. Mitchell. The only climbs are the 
bridge approaches, but they're not bad. 

It should also be noted that the trail is segmented in Atlantic Highlands 
-- once one reaches Avenue D, turn left and head down Avenue D, make a 
right onto Center Ave, and pick up the trail resurfaces at the intersection 
of Center and Hennessey. Also, the trail ends at Popamora Point, so the 
ride continues on Shore Drive through Highlands to reach the bridge.

Regarding food, there are some places in Highlands along the main drag (Bay 
Ave). I might probably just bring my own lunch and avoid going inside.

Yes, John, those driving directions are the best way to get there.

Regarding restrooms: According to the Monmouth County Park System's 
website, there a restroom at the HHT Activity Center at Rt. 36 and Avenue 
D, and there's also one at Popamora Point, at the eastern end of the trail 
in Highlands. There are also some restrooms along the way in Sandy Hook at 
the beach complexes:

But looking just now at Seastreak's schedule, it doesn't show a stop at 
Atlantic Highlands! (Might be a temporary thing because of reduced demand 
due to COVID?) It does stop further east at Highlands, though. Also, the 
earliest Saturday or Sunday arrival at Highlands is 11:45am, and the last 
two boats depart Highlands at 4:30pm and 7:30pm.

So, just to throw out an idea, maybe those taking the train (or who want to 
get a longer ride in) can start at Matawan (NJT North Jersey Coast Line 
train #7229 leaves NYP at 9:07am and arrives at Aberdeen/Matawan at 
10:11am), head east to meet up with those who want to start at Atlantic 
Highlands at, say 11:30am, and then continue east (IMO, the most scenic 
portion of the "mainland" is between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands) to 
pick up those arriving by ferry at Highlands at 11:45am and then cross the 
bridge to hit Sandy Hook. (Similar situation for the return, but the train 
riders have the option of returning to Aberdeen/Matawan or heading south 
for a shorter trip to Long Branch).

Any thoughts on this?

Starting from Atlantic Highlands (First Ave & Hennessey), it's about 4 
miles to the ocean (after passing through the town of Highlands and then 
crossing the Rt. 36 bridge, which has cycling/ped infrastructure). From the 
bridge, the basic loop to the end of Sandy Hook and back to the bridge is 
around 12 miles (of course, it's more if you decide to ride around and hit 
up all some interesting points up there). So, the trip from AH to SH and 
back to AH will be about 20-25 miles.

Now if one were to start at the Matawan train station, it's around 11 miles 
to reach Atlantic Highlands, so the trip from Matawan to Sandy Hook and 
back will then be roughly 45 miles. (To use Jan Heine's terms, think of 
that portion as the "transport stage" to reach the start of the "official" 
ride at AH!)

Another option for those coming by train would be to continue south along 
the ocean after Sandy Hook and take Rt. 36/Ocean Ave for most of the way to 
pick up the return train at Long Branch (it's 7 miles from the Rt. 36 
bridge to the station). So that trip from Matawan to AH to SH to LB would 
be around 34 miles.

What kind of rides is everyone interested in? What distances do you have in 
mind? Here are some thoughts right off the top of my head:

The only scenic section of the Henry Hudson Trail is the very short section 
between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands. So, a nice ride could be to start 
from Atlantic Highlands, ride along the Raritan Bay into Highlands, then 
cross the bridge over the Shrewsbury River (a little bit of a climb) and 
hit Sandy Hook, which is really nice. Once there, you can ride along Sandy 
Hook Bay, ride past old officers quarters, gun emplacements, and a 
lighthouse. This is a 25-30 mile round trip. (But starting from the Matawan 
train station to the west would add another 20 miles to the round trip.)

Another option is Patriots Path, which one can pick up not too far from the 
Morristown train station (actually, Morris Plains might be better to avoid 
Morristown traffic). Starting from Speedwell Lake, the eastern part is 
paved, but it turns to dirt singletrack soon enough for the rest of the way 
westward. It's all off road, cross-country stuff -- diverse landscapes, 
mostly flat, but there are some rollers and a few short but steep hills in 
the middle with roots (you can always get off your bike and hike it up). 
The area gets progressively less suburban as you head further west, and by 
the time you reach Mendham, there's even a nice little water crossing. It's 
about a 20 mile round trip from Morristown to Mendham and back.

If you're looking for just a little chill ride for a get-together, another 
place is the Loantaka Brook Reservation (Morristown area), coupled with 
some road stretches in the area with the Traction Line Trail. (Getting off 
the train at Convent Station will put you off literally right alongside the 
Traction Line Trail.) Nice, varied terrain, although the trails tend to get 
crowded on the weekend.

The D Canal towpath is nice. The more scenic section is the one that runs 
along the Delaware River (but might be too far for New Yorkers). There's 
also a section between New Brunswick and Trenton with a nice stretch around 
Princeton. An option could be to get off the train at Bound Brook, pick up 
the trail there, and head south to Kingston and Princeton (but that's 
around a 40-mile round trip, mostly through nothing but trees along a 
canal).

The Columbia Trail is another nice one. There's a train stop very close to 
the southern trailhead at High Bridge, but the trains don't go that far 
west on weekends. But from there, it's a 22-mile round trip between there 
and the Long Valley Brew Pub.

(I've been to the former, but not the latter.) You can take the Metro North 
train to Wassaic, and a good portion of the route from Wassaic to Rudd Pond 
to Bash Bish is on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail.

My Clem has an SV-8 hub up front that powers a B+M Lumotec IQ Premium Cyo 
headlight and a B+M Toplight on the rear rack. (The SV-8 is more ideally 
suited for smaller wheels than for the 650B wheel it's built into, but 
according to Shutter Precision, it still puts out 6V 2.4W for 26"/700C 
wheels.) It works great.

Your PV-8, with its rated 6V 3W for the 26"/700C wheels, puts out a little 
more wattage than my SV-8, so it'll be fine.

I've had 650B x 42 Babyshoe Pass Extralights (with tubes) on my Rawland for 
almost three years now (I mounted them just before D2R2 in 2017 to replace 
worn Hetres). That bikes sees mostly pavement (from smooth-as-glass to 
pothole-ridden and debris-strewn), but I take it off-road whenever I can on 
gravel roads, canal towpaths, and rocky singletrack. I haven't had a flat 
yet.

I don't have to go back to my childhood for this one, as it happened less 
than four years ago.

I was part of a small group, riding on a rail trail after getting off a 
train in Wassaic, NY and heading toward Millerton to camp overnight for the 
following day's annual Harlem River Rail Ride event. Being the amateur 
documentarian photographer that I am, I was taking photos of fellow riders 
and the surrounding scenery (and spending too much time looking through the 
viewfinder of my camera rather than directly in front of me). At all road 
crossings there was a large post right in the middle of the trail to 
discourage idiot motorists from driving onto it. Well, one was coming up, 
and I just happened to catch sight of it (through my camera's viewfinder) 
only a second before slamming into it. I wasn't going really fast, but it 
was fast enough for me to get thrown right over the bars, do a complete 
flip, and land on my back. I had a scrape on my shoulder and knee, but 
otherwise I was well enough to continue the ride to the campsite and dinner 
by a lake that day and do the main ride the next day -- heck, even the 
camera around my neck survived -- although the pain did come a couple of 
days later. That'll teach me to look where I'm going!

Well put, Mark!

I tend to follow all of the rules of the road, but only when it works with 
my safety: I'll do whatever I have to do to stay safe, like use a usually 
empty sidewalk for a very brief portion on a busy and fast four-lane road 
with no shoulder, or bolt out into the intersection just before the traffic 
light for me turns green for me (but after the red light-running motorists, 
of course) before it gets messy with turning and impatient motorists. 
Little tweaks.

But otherwise, I ride away from the curb so that I'm seen (also to 
discourage motorists from passing me in an unsafe manner), I signal my 
intentions (just point with my arms), I am always ready to brake hard when 
approaching an intersection (with the assumption that someone in a car will 
pull out in front of me, whether we make eye contact or not), I ride with a 
headlight on at all times, and I ride in an assertive and predictable 
manner. (Now don't label me as one of those rigid anti bike-infra vehicular 
cyclists -- I ride like that when I have to, but I'd much rather ride on a 
bikeway -- a properly designed one, that is.)

Granted, I don't commute to work on my bike, but despite living in one of 
the most densely populated counties in the country (and in the most densely 
populated state), I can't recall the last time a motorist intentionally 
threatened me or gave me abuse for being on a bike. (Careless driving is 
another matter.) Because of the vast network of interconnected streets, I 
try to ride on low-traffic, low-speed routes, tied together with bike 
paths, walkways, and alleys when I can.

If you want to stay local to SF, a nice way to spend a day is to ride west 
along the marina waterfront (away from the touristy area), explore the 
Presidio, ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, and have lunch on the water in 
Sausalito. Then, hop on a ferry back and enjoy the views on your way back 
to SF.

As others have mentioned, the Vermonter (DC to St. Albans, VT, via NYC) 
does allow bikes on board without the need to box them up -- they've 
modified the luggage nook of a regular coach on that train so that the 
bike's rear wheel is hung from a hook. Getting your bike on board through a 
coach doorway, then rounding a corner to get into the passenger compartment 
(while having panniers looped across my shoulders) is not as easy as simply 
rolling it (or handing it off) to a dedicated baggage car, but it works, 
and the online booking with bike was very straightforward (although they do 
charge an additional $20, I believe).

Here's a photo from when I took the Vermonter from New Jersey to 
Massachusetts for D2R2. I removed the front wheel as per instructions for 
the ride up, but on the return trip, the conductor let me just hang the 
bike intact, as there was enough room for the bike to hang.

I totally agree with your thoughts on the Clem! Mine's going in the 
opposite direction from you, though: I'm in the middle of swapping out 
parts on my grilver 52 Clem H to convert it from a knock-around / utility 
bike into something that will also be more suited to rougher terrain (but 
apparently not overly rooty/rocky trails!). But that's OK -- it just shows 
how versatile this machine is, and it would be a real shame if it was to be 
dropped from the lineup, so get one while you can!

Like the others have said, it's not difficult; once you understand the 
basics of how each turn of the spoke nipple affects radial, lateral, and 
center trueness, as well as how it affects the tension of nearby spokes, it 
just takes patience. Jobst Brandt's book, The Bicycle Wheel, gave me a good 
understanding of the mechanics involved. 

In addition to buying a truing stand, I also have a Park tensiometer -- 
they're both very helpful to a novice wheelbuilder like myself (and 
important to get the tension right). I've built up about a dozen wheels so 
far, and they've all held up very well -- although I taco'ed my very first 
wheel when I got overzealous with stress-relieving when truing! Anyway, I 
encourage you to give it a go --it's very satisfying to ride on wheels you 
built on your own!

I have a Subaru Crosstrek. It's just big enough to keep my 650B bike inside 
without needing to remove a wheel, but that's definitely not the case with 
my other bikes, especially the Clem -- the front wheel needs to come off 
for that.

My previous car was a 1996 Saab 900 -- I used to put two bikes in (keeping 
all wheels on).

visited the WPI for the first time last June for one of their pancake 
breakfasts, having hiked there via the Old Railroad Grade. A weekend spent 
biking those trails and hanging with some fine folks sounds wonderful; I'd 
love to do this sometime in the future.

I love the Columbia Trail! And Patrick is spot on -- it is amazing how the 
vibe of a place changes with some different light.

If you want some variation of the ride, instead of an out-and-back, take 
Raritan River Road for a portion of the way -- it runs right alongside the 
South Branch of the Raritan River through the Ken Lockwood Gorge and is 
quite lovely:

[RBW] New Wavie Bar Photos

After hearing about the upcoming Wavie handlebars from Bill Lindsay in this 
post , 
I took his suggestion to ask Riv if they would send some photos ahead of 
the catalog arrival. Vince came through, and also mentioned that the bars 
are 66 cm wide with a 25.4 mm diameter at the clamp, and they should arrive 
at Rivendell next month in their Nitto shipment. So (with Vince's 
permission), here they are. They look great!

Hey Tully,

I really like my 52cm Clem H. I use it for local transportation and running 
errands, as well as for on- and off-road weekend rambles. It was my first 
Rivendell frame, and I was pleasantly surprised that, despite it being 
billed as their budget bike, the frame is well-built, the paint is superb 
and the what lugs it does have are beautiful. Plus, it has lots of mounting 
points for racks and fenders. I'm 5'-9" with an 84cm PBH, so I think the 52 
will fit you just fine. (Plus, it's a really big bike.)

I have a 1x8 drivetrain on my Clem Smith. It's got a Sugino XD2 crankset 
with a Wolf Tooth 34-tooth Drop-Stop chainring, and the 11x34 cassette is 
shifted by a Sunrace thumbie. I've never had problems with this set-up.
