Re: [RBW] 1x11 Rivendell!

2015-08-09 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
Vacationing in Whistler, this morning I went on a bike ride with my daughter on
rental valley bikes, i.e., entry-level Giant MTB-shaped objects with placebo
suspension forks. In Whistler Village we happened upon the Crankworx Demo/Expo
plaza, and the kind folks at the Giant tent let us borrow some fancy new
genuine MTBs which we took to the nearby Lost Lake trails for a couple hours.
My Giant Reign Advanced Enduro Shred Sled was festooned with the new Shimano XT
M8000 gruppo including the 1x11 drivetrain shared by the Blug Hunq. The
shifting and braking were superb. If you can live with the limited gear range,
1x11 is nice. For really steep climbs, however, 34x40 is not low enough for me.
On my personal 650b MTB with SRAM 1x11, I typically use a 30 tooth chainring
and a 10-42 cassette. The new XT cassette does come in an 11-42 flavor.

Re: [RBW] Re: Necro-stock! A shop with a new Rambouillet frame in stock?

2015-07-14 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
Is it legit?

Does anybody know the provenance of these bikes?

The Alex website says the manufacturer is Rivendell. But surely these are
Toyo-made Rabous, right? I could be wrong, but my guess is that these bikes
went from Toyo to Alex without stopping in Walnut Creek.

If Alex and/or Toyo are selling these for a profit, it would be legit for
Grant/Riv to get a cut, no?

For a 100 km ride, Bosco the Handlebar for steering, and Bosco the Chocolate

Does anyone have reports or reflections after going significant
single-ride distances with Boscos you might be willing to share?

As an aside, I was peeking at the aluminum Jones loop H-bars, and
actually thought these could be pretty darn comfy for an extended ride, but
the clamp diameter is 31.8, and I think Nitto only makes one quill stem

with a Jones bar on a Riv, and if so, how did you fix it up and what were
 your impressions?

Hope all are well this fine Sunday,

Re: [RBW] Re: Thunder Burt Wisdom...

2015-05-25 Thread David Yu Greenblatt

In the MTB world Schwalbe is known for making fast (low rolling resistance)
but relatively fragile tires. Here in SoCal many mountain bikers who enjoy
bombing down gnarly downhills eschew them because of their relatively low
longevity, even with Snakeskin or Super Gravity enhanced construction.

Thunder Burt is the fastest Schwalbe tire available for XC MTB racing. It's
what a pro would choose for trying to win the XC gold medal at the Olympics (if
she wasn't running something more exotic like a tubular).

Loaded backcountry touring is way way off the intended use grid for Thunder
Burts. Not to say it is a bad idea, just that (many/severe) flats are to be
expected.

Snakeskin only means more durable sidewalls, not additional puncture/cut
protection under the tread.

Sealant will only seal punctures and small cuts.

I really like Schwalbe Evolution line XC tires like Thunder Burt and Racing
Ralph for trail riding (and even more delicate tires like Compass Babyshoe Pass
and Pacenti Pari Moto). I'm willing to accept a much higher risk of flats and
limited tire lifespan to get that sweet ride. I carry spare tubes and tube
patches and sealant and a tire boot patch.

For a multiday off-road bikepacking with Thunder Burts carrying a spare tire
would be a good idea. I've read that you can fix major casing cuts in the field
with a needle and dental floss plus shoe goo, but I've never had to try that
yet.

Re: [RBW] Photos: please consider providing link rather than attachment

2015-05-05 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
Hi Jim, yes, it is almost all Gmail: 13.36 GB Gmail, 1.46 GB Drive, and
0.03 Google+ Photos. Some of that Gmail data is from me emailing large
documents to myself, but I think the majority is photo attachments sent to
the bike lists.

I've been a member of iBOB for a long time and have over 57,000 iBOB
messages archived in my Gmail. When I have a bike related question,
searching this archive often yields the answer. It will be kind of sad to
delete this trove of knowledge in one fell click but I think that is the
most sensible thing to do, like Tarik did. Or maybe I will delete all the
@googlegroups messages and keep the alex-era @bikelist.org messages.

I've used the digest email option before, but didn't like it much because
it entailed lots and lots of scrolling to find anything worth reading. With
Gmail its easy to click on the conversations that interest me, and ignore
the rest.

I've also tried the web interface, and didn't like it much, either, but
that was a while ago. Perhaps it has improved? I'll give it another try.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

email traffic. Anyhow, from old school email dynamics that is a complete
travesty, but again, it is not sitting on a drive in Alex's basement

I usually delete CR a few times a year, but I do value quick easy mailbox
searches on Ibob and RBW as there is content I value more often, but again
we are looking at 1GB of email a year EACH from ibob and RBW. Which is not
text. That is images. I don't download images on my phone unless I want

Re: [RBW] Tubeless -- max pressure?

2015-04-07 Thread David Yu Greenblatt

I try to stay below 45 psi on my tubeless 650b road tires including Pari Moto
(old version), Hetre, and Babyshoe Pass. I do not know what the actual safe max
PSI is for these tires when run tubeless. Probably depends on the tire and rim
combo. The thought of a tire blowoff at speed - e.g., during a fast road
descent - gives me the shivers. So I keep the PSI low.

I will be installing Panaracer Pari-Moto tires (new design), and I have
 Pacenti rim tape (tubeless compliant).

Since I encountered so many punctures on this bike this year, I'd like to try
 these tires tubeless.

 But, I have concerns:

 * The rim and tape are tubeless-ready, but the tires do not have a
 tubeless-specific bead.
Will the tubeless-ready rim do most of the work?
 * I've seen the max recommended pressure for DIY tubeless at ~50 psi, with
increased risk of blow-offs if surpassed. (60 psi would be my max pressure
 on these tires)

I have set up my fat bike tires DIY tubeless with great success (with
hookless rims, even), but we're talking 20 psi max.

I know that some of you are riding Hetres (and similar tires) tubeless. Do
you keep the pressure under some reasonable maximum? Have you had any
problems with the tire blowing off the rim?

And yes, I will report back on the ride of the new Pari-Moto tires, with
comparison to GB Lierres (previous) and Mitsuboshi Trimlines (current). I
will set them up with tubes to begin with, which will allow apples-to-apples
 comparison.

640b tires tubeless: Hetre, Pari Moto, Babyshoe Pass Extralight, Quasi Moto,
Racing Ralph, Thunder Burt, Maxxis Ardent Race. I use tubeless compatible rims
with Stan's tape and Stan's sealant and more recently Orange Seal sealant. I do
not use an air compressor. A high-volume floor pump like the Lezyne Dirt Drive
works fine for mounting the tires. Regarding this subject, your LBS is spouting
hogwash.

What all is involved with initial setup on tubeless? Is there a Riv-ish

My LBS told me that I needed to have an air compressor to make the tires
seat, but I have a hard time imagining that to be true. They also said that
if you don't ride them regularly, it's better to use tubes because the tire
will come off the bead, which relates to needing (again) to have an air
 compressor to seat.

I can't imagine random guys running tubeless all have air compressors in
their respective garages. Or do they?

 Two points:
 1. Definitely use Orange Seal. I've had much better results for initial
setup with it than Stans; also, doesn't create boogers in your tires after
 time (unlike Stans).

 2. HED Belgium C2+ is another wide, rim braking rim that works well. More
expensive than the Pacentis, but I've had great results with, both tubed and
 tubeless.

With Stan's rim tape and sealant the following tires worked fine tubeless:

Sorts the same thread as before, but with more detailed questions below I am

I love my Hetres, but if the 38 or 32mm tires feel and work just as well and
will pass thru my R559 brakes without having to deflate them, then why not
get them for the next set?
Nit picky, I know, but trying to optimize for my next set of tires.

I was thinking the Loup 38's, but thought I could even go to Cypres 32's. I
just ride roads/MUPS. Definitely want normal casings. Not the extra legers.

 Was thinking about these issues:

 1. Which, in theory, has the least likelihood of punctures (tread thickness
 and inflation pressures)?
Tread thickness on Loups is 3mm.
Tread thickness on Cypres is 3.5? (I think the same as the 3.5 tread Hetre?).
Can both be ridden at 50psi? Compass site doesn't say inflation ranges of the
 tires.
Sounds like both the same likelihood of puncture of they can be ridden at
50psi for less debris hammerability into tread?

 2. Cushy, soft, road-buzz-dampening ride. Loup is higher volume than the
other, so in theory, the Loup should be more cushy, but don't know if I will
notice a diff between the tires, being as they are both wide and if they can
 both be ridden at 50psi.

 Any info is appreciated.
Also interested to see what a sub-300 gram tire (Cypres) feels like to ride.

Not sure if any of this will even make a difference for an un-racer like me.

 valves :) It's quite brilliant !

Re: [RBW] Large Rando bag / rack / decaleur interface

2014-05-28 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
A big bike deserves a big bag.
Here's my custom RuthWorks SF bag by Ely Rodriguez:
https://flic.kr/p/iJwL8X
It's larger than any stock Berthoud. It sits on a rack and is attached to
the stem by a Grand Bois decaleur. As Steve P said, this decaleur is not
adjustable.
The large volume of the bag is great.

Ely makes beautiful bags.

neither the rack nor decaleur are guaranteed to work with a tall bag.

What rack decaleurs are people using happily with these tall bags? What

and space, oh right I did lose some time! Was about half and hour late to
the meet up fortunately I have one of those modern devices and gave Curtis
 a heads up.

We left the Del Martians behind and traveled South toward Torrey Pines
State Beach and made a turn East along Carmel Valley Rd skirting the Torrey
Pines Preserve lagoon fed by Penaquitos Creek. Just before Interstate 5 we
make a right onto Old Sorrento Valley Rd which transitions into Sorrento
Valley Rd, we made a pit stop at Cycle Quest tucked into a strip mall in
the shadow of Interstate 5 need to go back and really check the place out,
you can see the mixed terrain vibe is growing as this shop had Surly and
Salsa among other brands. I think we were all anxious to be free of
automotive traffic so we rolled over the rail road tracks up Sorrento
Valley Blvd and crossed into the Western edge of Penasquitos Canyon making
our way over a dry water course and had ridden no more than a couple of
miles before we spotted a group from the San Diego Randonneurs travelling
West...Mike chatted about their web site and future rides and Randonneur
bikes, very nice fellows all atop 29ers. We made our way up the canyon and
okay about this time I was in bliss smooth fire road and single track oh
and floating over the rough patches were the remounted Hetres hooray for
 balloon tires.

Continuing on we paused at the Penasquitos water falls and ook in views of
the surprising amount of water, but we had a meet up with our fellow Riv
rider Tom Virgil so we picked up the pace and giddily glided to the Eastern
edge of the Preserve at Black Mountain Rd. From here we climbed North up to
Carmel Valley Rd turned left West toward Camino Del Sur and Tom, who had
camera phone in hand.and his luxurious Sam Hillborne with flipped Albatross
bars (unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of Tom's Sam, on the next
one) which has me thinking now. We had a brief chat and Tom took us into
 new territory!

At a fair clip riding West down Carmel Valley Rd we turned right on to
Lopelia Meadow Pl past new model homes and a Danger no pedestrians sign
 with orange barrier fencing
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalpusher61/10785042006/in/set-72157637527430185
  (hey
it didn't say no bicyclists) before us was a surreal graded plain with
farming discards, tomato stakes, graffiti-ed trailer and massive sewer
section also adorned with graffiti. We pressed on for our second canyon
Gonzales Canyon which we dropped into and the rest of the world melted
away...more smooth single track with undulating sections as the trail traced
a line from canyon floor to it's sloping sides. We paused often both to
take in the solitude and route suggestions from Tom...at a point he
mentioned a 45% climb and I must say I was skeptical...wrong we all fsound
our LCG as we topped out of the Canyon at it's South Western terminus at
Torrey Pines Public Park on the back side of Torrey Pine High School.

We lost Tom to family obligations and we all thanked him for showing us a
new playground as this area has a network of fire roads and trails which
run for miles upon miles in nearly every direction, more to explore. Can't
thank Tom enough he's a wonderful man and great riding partner.

The three of us rode down to El Camino Real heading North and picked up
our third dirt section near Via Del Valle Rd (This is near
the Equestrian Center Tom spoke of thanks to Tom we avoided any nasty horse
people) we entered the San Dieguito River Park Lagoon trail and rode along
the edge of the serene waters of the lagoon with blue sky and
soft wispy clouds above and the Del Mar Fair Grounds across the lagoon to
our right. Exiting the trail at Camino Del Mar at River Mouth we headed
North onto Hwy 101 to Solana Beach and Pizza Port for refreshments.

I always experience a bit of sadness as a great ride comes to it's end but
in the end was completely satisfied with the ride and so pleased with the
company as Curtis, Mike and Tom are great fellows to ride with.

Here are my set of pictures to prove that it indeed happened.

Re: [RBW] Stan's - In Tubes?

2013-09-12 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
Two tools that I recently started using which make it easy to add Stan's
sealant to tires with removable valve cores that are already mounted on the
rims (you have add fresh sealant every few months):

Valve core tool:
http://www.parktool.com/product/valve-core-tool-vc-1
I used to use needle-nose pliers and this tool is much better.

Sealant Injector:
http://www.notubes.com/2oz-Tire-Sealant-Injector-P348.aspx
Screw it on the the valve stem after removing the core with the tool above,
fill up with your desired amount of sealant from an economy bottle, and
squirt in.

First, I buy the small, 2-oz bottles -- expensive at $3.99/ea. I use 1 oz
in road tires, 2 oz in mtb tires. I don't want leftover drying up on me,
and the small bottles make measuring and inserting easy.

For valves with removable cores, simply cut the bottle's tip, remove the
valve core, invert nozzle over stem, and squeeze in the desired amount.

For presta valves without removable cores: remove tube from tire. Have
your bottles' nozzles cut, and have a small pair of pliers and a rag
nearby. Pinch tube immediately underneath valve. Use pliers to force off
locknut. Let core drop into stem, catching it inside tube with your
fingers. Insert sealant. Invert valve so that core falls back into stem.
Wipe as needed. Invert right side up. Supporting core from underneath,
 force locknut back on.

I've been on horror rides where I've run out of tubes; stopped at a bike
shop and bought more; run out of those too. And one day on the Ken Rogers
tricycle, with 2 rear wheels to flat ...! I've routinely bought patches by
 the box of 100.

One more thing: I can't emphasize how liberating it is not to have to

horrible combination of Slime, 400 gram thornproof tubes, wooden belted

Roubaix when first mounted and before Stan's -- 20 patches in a week. The
sole thorn proof system I' used (Big Apples were pretty good but not
proof) involved the combination above and riding it felt -- literally --
as if a gremlin were squeezing the brakes.

The bosque roads, particularly those less used for recreation, are
covered with this year's massive crop of goathead plants, sometimes the
vines spreading across the path from side to side. I cheerfully rode
through such a patch yesterday and, though the thorns are still to mature,
it was not by any means something I'd have done pre-Stan's.

Stan's was invented for tubeless conversions but it works in tubes --
I've used it in my 30 mm Parigi Roubaix (~60 psi) and the F Freds (~25

The sole downside of Stan's, as far as I can tell to date, is that it
slowly dries up into little, golf-ball sized latex octopuses and you have
to replace it. If used in tubes, this means putting up with the solids in
your tubes or replacing the tubes every three to six months. With tubeless,
of course, you can simply remove the tire and clean up the carcase.

The one flat I've had on my two pairs of Stan's equipped tubes was in
the higher pressure pair when a bad patch came undone. I expect Stan's,
like other sealants, won't work as well on larger holes such as those from
roofing nails, though I could be wrong. But, in my case, all flat dangers,
for all practical purposes, are goatheads

Re: [RBW] Re: “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions - Is Grant Eating the Wrong Stuff?

2013-03-14 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
At most medical schools, only an hour or so the four-year-long curriculum
is devoted to diet and nutrition. So your primary doc may or may not know
much about the subject.

It must be tough to try to do scientific research on the health effects of
diet. I haven't read any of the literature. I can imagine designing
experiments with short-term surrogate outcomes like weight loss, changes in
blood lipid profiles, and so on. But what are the truly relevant outcomes
related to diet and health? Longevity? Quality-adjusted life years? Overall
long-term happiness? It would be impossible to run a randomized controlled
trial (e.g., paleo vs. conventional USA diet) with those outcomes. And I
would think that observational studies would have problems related to
potential confounders, etc. This may be an area where anecdotal evidence
has value, and self-experimentation is a reasonable approach.

Paleo Diet? When I eat these things, I have lots of energy and I feel good
and my weight stays in control. When I deviate from this, and eat breads
and sweets, I quickly start to feel bad, look puffy, and gain weight. I
don't need a doctor's note to tell me that eating natural food and avoiding
processed food is a good idea.

The notion that eating these basic, natural foods is extreme, and that
somehow eating a bowl of manufactured cereal with a side of pastry every
 morning is natural is backwards.

be prepared for finishing late enough to need lights. Bring lights if
you are not certain if you can complete the distance by 5 PM. It may be
prudent to assume you can’t finish a ride with the same speed you enjoyed
last summer. Winds and/or bad weather could slow you down. Regardless
you are encouraged to have lights in the event of a mishap that delays your
return. Weather conditions are highly variable along the route with
dense ground fog being possible. Lights will improve your safety. Given
cloud cover or inclement weather it may be prudent to start the ride with

MUSA out of NZ wool, good stuff. The fabric seems heavier than in the Ibex

protect the knees. I find my bib-knickers good for cool-to-cold (i.e.,
35-55 degrees F) riding here in San Francisco. I tend to run warm, and
never feel the need to wear full tights (in SF; winter cycling in Wisconsin

Re: [RBW] Ram build

2012-12-23 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
I had an orange Rambou for several years. I built it up in fairly standard
Riv/BOB manner: Nitto bar/stem/seatpost/bottlecages, Brooks B17 saddle,
friction downtube shifters, Shimano derailleurs, compact double crankset
(Ritchey Logic with 46/33 rings if I recall correctly), 28mm Roly Poly
tires, and a Baggins Banana seatbag. It was a lovely bike to look at and
ride. I found it well suited to long rides on rural Wisconsin roads.

The Rambou is a comfortable and versatile road bike, as you would expect
from Grant P, and as described in the Riv brochure:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet/rambflyer/index.html

So, all rounder? - yes; country bike? - yes; tourer? - yes; randonneur?
- yes; commuter? - yes; racer? - no.

Patrick, I think adding a Rambou to your current stable will allow you to
enjoy longer road rides in hillier terrain.

The braze ons on the seat stays are to mount a rear rack, as you can see in
several of the fine examples on Cyclofiend Jim's website:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet/index.html

As I have opined before, I think your choice of skinny tubular tires for
this bike is odd. Skinny racing tubulars on a classic Italian racing bike
for rides on good roads in good weather would be neat. High-quality fat
tubulars (e.g., 27mm FMB Paris Roubaix or the new 30mm Challenge Eroica) on
a Rambouillet on those same good roads in good weather would be sublime.
But skinny cheap tubulars on a Rambouillet in goathead-infested ABQ, where
you currently get 2-3 flats per week? I don't get it. Let us know how it
works out.

On Sat, Dec 22, 2012 at 8:46 PM, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote:

 Some questions:

 1. What sort of riding do y'all find the Ram best for? My purpose for it
is longer rides with light if any load; my two Riv fixies are great for up
to 30 miles without load (had a great, smooth, quiet ride on the '99 gofast
today) or 20 miles with load. The Fargo is the dirt bike that, with the
second, Rhyno Light/Kojak wheelset, is great for heavier grocery and (one
 day, please God) touring loads.

I imagine that the Ram is probably too stout to be a racing bike, but
then, my gofast always surprises me at how fast it feels after riding other
 bikes.

So: Racer? Randonneur? Tourer? All rounder?

 2. Does the Ram handle best with tires of a certain diameter? Is there an
optimum range? I remember Riv #1 (ordered late '94, rec'd early '95) felt
best with 559X32 Paselas; with 22 mm Turbos it wasn't bad, but it was a bit
more darty than please my particular taste. (#s 2 and 3, largely identical,
are superior evolutions in that they handle better both with the current 22
mm Michelin Pro Race 3s ('99) and the 34 mm Kojaks ('03).

Mine will start out with whatever tubs I can get cheaply; so far, looks
 like skinny Vittorias.

 3. What are those braze ons for on the *inside* of the upper seat stays?

 4. My frame is blue. It has a few chips in the paint on the outer for'ard
right chainstay and on the inside, upper seatstays. Does anyone have a
paint # or nail enamel model that matches?

 5. How does the Ram handle with loads? I note that the chainstays are
shortish at 43.4 (those on my Fargo and the two Riv customs, both build as
gofasts, are a cm longer), but my '95 with 42.5 stays handled heavy rear
loads better than the later ons. My Ram has no fork braze ons for a rack,
nor would I want to add a front rack; but I am curious how heavy a rear
load I could carry on a top quality, top-for-stiffness rack (say Tubus
Cargo or Logo or, for that matter, Fly) without getting the wag the dog
 feel.

Going through my parts boxes recently, I find that I lack only seatpost,
calipers, and dt shifters. Someone onlist has very generously offered parts
for shipping, so I hope even these will be supplied.

 More as things develop.

Re: [RBW] Ram/Roadeo/other roady build lists and photos?

2012-12-18 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
I have used tubeless MTB and 650B tires with sealant, and tubular
cyclocross tires with sealant. My impression is that tubular cyclocross
tires with sealant are more resistant to pinprick-style punctures compared
to sealant-less tubulars, but are nowhere near as flatproof as true
tubeless tires. In my experience, once a cyclocross tubular has a
legitimate puncture (not some tiny leak), no amount of additional Stan's
sealant or Vittoria Pit Stop latex foam will revive it.

The key variable regarding sealant performance is tube vs. no tube, not
high vs. low pressure. Once a thin-walled inner tube suffers a significant
puncture or laceration, the sealant can't repair the defect. In contrast,
punctures in a relatively thick-walled tubeless tire can be plugged by the
latex particles in the sealant before a flat ensues. That is my theory,
anyway.

By all means, give it a try, but if you are currently getting 2-3 flats per
week on standard tubed clincher tires I would be surprised if you can go 2
weeks without a flat with tubulars plus sealant. And remember, while you
can repair a punctured clincher inner tube at the road side in a few
minutes, repairing a punctured tubular is a major ordeal.

Stan's has road tubular, but it's expensive and tire choice is
limited. It is intended for racers who will run high psi. You can read
  about it here: http://www.notubes.com/Road-Tubeless-C78.aspx

If you're setting up a fairly fat tire with with lower pressures, you
have more flexibility. For example, a Big Apple would probably make a
great tubeless set up, but a Ram won't fit that. Run a 40mm tire at
less than 60 psi, and it might work but I don't know for sure. But to
run a 40 on a Ram, I imagine you need to do the 650B conversion.

conventional position which involves bending at the waist and leaning
forward with the head leading the center of gravity does make non-trivial
head impact more likely in a crash.

Like Steve and others, I have had a good number of head-ringing and
helmet-destroying crashes over the years. Some of these crashes involved
risky activities like Cat 3 bike racing but others happened while just
riding along solo. Due to these experiences, and because I enjoy riding my
bikes fast, I almost always wear a helmet. But I do agree that riding a
bike in a mellow way -- e.g., pedaling to the local coffee shop -- is a
pretty safe activity that does not mandate wearing a helmet.

Another thought -- perhaps riding a Dutch-style city bike bolt upright
lessens the risk of going over the handlebars and landing on one's head? If
so, that is another reason why I should get a Bullmoose Bosco bar to
further differentiate my city bike from my rando and racing-style go-fast
bikes. I kind of like the idea of a designated bike for mellow helmetless
riding.

Yes, those stats seem on the mark to me. It would be interesting to unpack
the Falls category, however. My guess is that very very few would involve
healthy alert people falling down while walking or running or engaging in
common daily activities. In my limited and anecdotal experience as a
surgeon who has taken care of hundreds if not thousands of traumatically
injured patients, falls that result in serious brain injury usually occur
in individuals with other risk factors such as alcohol or drug
intoxication, weakness and other functional limitations associated with old
age, medical conditions that cause sudden loss of consciousness such as
epilepsy and atrial fibrillation, engaging in relatively risky activities
(e.g., hunting in a tree stand), etc.

I'm sure SRAM XX1 will work well, but the stuff will not be compatible with
any other drivetrain parts that most of us already own (including most
existing rear hubs), and the price will not be cheap.

I kind of like GP's original suggestion of shifting with a stick. Has
anybody tried that yet? An article on stick selection, modification,
on-bike carrying/storage options, shifting technique, and alternate uses

You could do 34 or 32 as your single front chainring and still pretty much
have a lowest gear suitable for touring. With a 32 in front, the 32/42 low
would be very similar to a 24T granny combined with 32T rear cog. With a 34
in front, the 34/42 low would be a bit easier than a 24/29.

The lack of large outer chainring would provide good real estate for a
pants guard. Also, I've been riding my 1x11 Alfine QB a lot lately, and
it's nice to have a wide gear range and no FD. Just a bit less complication
and a beautiful bare seat tube when you look down. I think it would be even
better with a rear derailleur instead of IGH.

Such a bike would be really sweet.

2 different friends. I opted for the latter. When I told my wife the new

involved something about how when I'm gone during the day she does't have
any time off 'cause she's watching the kids. For her to get time off I
need to be gone in the evening too so she can relax and do her thing.

In the end, I opted to go for the 2 day trips and disappoint my wife.

Saturday (day 1) was an excursion across the Columbia River to Portland's

Vancouver, BC, Canada is the cool Vancouver). Our objective was a MUP
that friend B-money had spied on the map a while back but neither of us had
ever ridden on it. Success... the trail was a bit dis-jointed with several
connections on neighborhood streets, but overall it was a pleasant respite
from the heavily car oriented suburbs of the 'couve.

Sunday (day 2) the weather was supposed to start out cloudy but clear up
as the day progressed. That didn't necessarily prove to be the case. We got
a little wet, but it wasn't that cold and we were mostly dry. Despite the
weather, it was great to ride with fellow AHH owner Leaf Mike Slayer. We
saw a bear but one of us might have shouted an exclamation of excitement
and scared the bruin off before anyone could snap a picture, so no proof
 that that actually happened.

greater safety margin than carbon clinchers, ride more comfortably for a
given width, and don't pinch flat easily. Road tubeless requires tires
that are not easily available locally for most of us, aren't cheap, have

a pain to get mounted and sealed, are a mess to deal with if a repair is
needed on the road, and won't quite ride like tubulars.

If I had the cash to spend, I'd rather ride some light carbon tubular
wheels (ideally with disc brakes), use Tufo tape for mounting, and carry a

clinchers and tubes are where I plan on being for quite a while to come.

Re: [RBW] Re: New 650B conversion of a 1984 Miyata 912, and a foray into tubeless

2012-05-22 Thread David Yu Greenblatt
I am just getting back into tubeless after a long hiatus, and I am no
expert. In the past month I got a new 29er MTB with tubeless wheels (the
rims on my old MTB were not tubeless compatible) and I also mounted Hetres
on a new wheelset that has Stan's rims using Stan's tape and Stan's
sealant. My understanding is that some of the sealant forms a solid layer
of latex on the inside of the tire and some stays liquid. Eventually the
liquid will evaporate, but it does not leave a heavy lump of latex in the
tire in my experience. You may have to add more Stan's to your tires once
or twice per year to maintain the liquid flat-sealing component. I think
Stan's sealant is latex particles suspended in an ammonia solution with
some secret ingredients.

I have not had any problems with my tubeless Hetres so far, but I don't
have many miles on them yet. One tip for mounting with a floor pump is to
try to seat the beads of the tire as peripherally as possible on the
shoulders on the rim by pinching and pulling and lifting with your thumbs
before you start pumping air through the valve.

I am interested in tubeless Pari-Motos since in theory that would maintain
the lightweight and supple qualities of the tire while improving flat
resistance significantly. However I don't think I can safety try using my
new wheelset with sub-350 gram Stan's rims because I have heard they have a
40 PSI upper limit. I am hoping that it may be possible with the new
Pacenti or Velocity A23 rims.

bottom, does that make an offcenter lump that shakes the workstand when you
spin the wheel, same as a reflector? I'd hate that. Or does it stay
liquid and slosh around forever? Or does it magically go away? If I do
mount tires again, I need more sealant, right? At some point I imagine the
weight of a few sealing jobs could exceed the weight of a tube. Is that
 crazy talk?

a compressor definitely helps, but I've had good luck with a track
pump and soapy water (rims are UST though, so that probably helped
seating). it's a simple process and shouldn't be messy at all if the
tire and rim work together. just don't bug out if they don't seal up/
hold pressure right away. If the sidewalls on the b-lines are porous,
it might take a day or two for the sealant to do its thing.

I can't imagine using tubes again on my MTB. it's just a better way
 to roll.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/49353569@N00/6836344977/in/photostream
Take some photos at RBW HQ!
I imagine this technology is going to get better and better, with more
depth(s) of focus and ability to zoom in -- in the near future I bet you
will be able to go somewhere, snap a few panoramic shots, and when you get
home, click and zoom/focus to explore all the details, kind of like
human-scale Google Earth.
Have a camera mounted on your helmet, and set it to snap a photo every 10
minutes or on voice command, and when you get home relive portions of the
bike ride and share photos with friends.
